Final Fantasy XIII’s Lightning Comes To Life

By Spencer . November 17, 2013 . 9:57pm

Square Enix made a live action commercial with an actress playing Lightning to promote Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII. Having actors stand in for RPG characters is kind of nostalgic for Japan. Both Square and Enix (years before they were one entity) did this for Super Nintendo games like Dragon Quest V and Final Fantasy VI  (Terra!).

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII comes out on November 21 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

Dress up Action… at least the commercial is honest.

    • This again?

      • iamamoogle

FF XIII-3 reminds me a lot of FF X-2 in that regard. The gameplay does look pretty fun though. I was fairly disinterested in this sub-franchise until this entry… then again maybe its the classic Final Fantasy references like Red Mage, Dragoon, Cloud, etc. that are getting me.

        • Kumiko Akimoto

          It reminds me of ff3

  • Go2hell66

damn i can’t even tell the difference, thought that was 3D lightning

    • JustThisOne

I think it’s both. The zoom-ins to the face is when it’s the actor. The strikes are done with the 3D model, I think.

But I’m probably wrong… xD 3D models are so realistic nowadays. It’s hard to tell!

      • Altumn

No you’re right its both, honestly I noticed and it wigged me out. Thought it was some weird camera issue.

  • Dark Zerato

    FFXIII Live Action confirm.

    • Learii

that be funny if is true

  • ndjn3979

At least they kept it short lol

    • Ronldbx6

Japanese commercials always keep it short and turbo.

  • AoNoise

    I think I just became a straight man…

I mean, I could give two damns about the game. But, dayuuum, she fiiine

    • Trevor Nicolaysen

I know how you feel. Bruce Campbell makes me feel the opposite and equivalent way.

  • TheExile285

Did the ad seriously say Dress Up action? Lol!

Sony needs to take some notes. This is how you do a decent LA ad: short and sweet

  • AndyLC

Whose the actress in the commercial? Anyone got a name?

  • Barrylocke89

Anyone have any favorite Live Action videogame commercials? I’ve grown fond of a certain Fire Emblem 4 spot.

  • Virevolte

What’s the point of having an actress ?

    • JustThisOne

It’s like a level-up to cosplayers, maybe? It’s a similar appeal, I guess. *__* It’s still an amazing job. And that photo with the cape floppin’ all over…. it’s so cool!

      • Virevolte

You must be right. It still seems strange to me, even if it’s well made.

    • Chiupon

remember that live action other m commercial that made people think the game was actually going to be good?

      it’s probably something like that
      (but here’s hoping this won’t be Lightning’s Other M.)

      • Anime10121

        But I liked Other M :(

But then again, it is the only Metroid I’ve liked, so I guess I can understand how that worked.

  • Loli Summoner

That girl is hot and she wasn’t even asian.

    • Go2hell66

what only asians can be hot now?

      • Loli Summoner

Oh yes, asian girls are the only good looking girls in the whoooole world….relax I didn’t mean it like that.I was referring to lightning not being asian, guess I should have been more clear.

  • hickorypan

It’s on everyone’s minds, so I’ll just go ahead and say it.

    Lightning isn’t Asian?

    • Chiupon

no her squared face structure, angular nose, green eyes, pale skin and sharp features are all asian facial features — nobody ever saw it coming that a girl named claire farron wasn’t asian

      • VietKnight

        it is actually Eclair Farron.

        • Chiupon

wow that’s most asian name i’ve ever heard!!!

          • Somber

            Eclair is french. Not asian.

        • Actually, it’s both – the Japanese is Eclair, the English is Claire.

Edit: Must of have been one funny localisation meeting when they decide to move the ‘e’ to the end. :D

          • VietKnight

Yeah but what is funny is Eclair works for the name translation/meaning compare to Claire

          • Had to do a quick search on it. And, yeah, I see why Eclair has a better fit than Claire. Probably thought that most wouldn’t get it, or something.

          • Um, I dunno. If they named her Eclair, I’d get the impression of a large woman who packs herself with desserts all day….particularly Eclaires. x)

          • Haha, me too. It does also means lightning (flash) from what I’ve seen.

      • Her sister definitely is — facially anyways.

      • hickorypan

No need for the sarcasm, it’s an innocent mistake to make. The characters from FFX had exotic names and body features too, but they were all still distinctly asian in their appearance. I don’t know whether it’s because they’re modeled after asian models or because Square like to make fantasy characters with ambigious ethnicities so it won’t seem too far from home for the Japanese market or whatever the heck it is.

      • Utku Savaş

The sarcasm is so sharp that i write this with half body.

    • Somber

No, she isn’t. She was meant to be. Devs wanted her to be more serious and changed her into less asian girl. Most FF characters weren’t asian.

      • Utku Savaş

Not in FFX. You can tell they’re Asian even with FMVs. Especially Rikku, Tidus and Yuna.

        • Chiupon

in ffx they were supposed to look south asian if i recall

but i know in ff8 they’re all european/french. like squall was modeled after River Phoenix. Rinoa definitely has this spanish thing going on too.

          • Utku Savaş

On the contrary, to me, the most Asian in the cast of FFVIII is Rinoa.

          • Chiupon

I feel that way about Selphie, but at the same time, her face is too long and I know several girls who look similarly (and often have freckles, wow. now that i think about it.) but try googling camilla belle or however it’s spelled. she’s a dead ringer for Rinoa.

          • Utku Savaş

I googled it and I think Rinoa is more cute. But this photo I found of Camilla has a striking resemblance to Rinoa:

Rinoa was my childhood love and when I broke free from that state of stupidity and look back, I still find Rinoa was the best lead female character in the whole franchise (I hate Yuna’s naive and dandy personality, I despise Dagger’s obstinate and irresponsible behaviors, I don’t like Aeris and I’m glad she’s dead, Terra is too shallow and blends in background, and the list goes on—actually, in FFVII the real lead female is Tifa and she’s my second favorite. She has a strong character and big boobs…..big boobs comes first).

    • ShawnOtakuSomething

half of the FF cast isnt

    • J_Joestar

to be fair, FF games tend to not include the continent of Asia despite sometimes having regions loosely based on parts of it at times.

  • Sergio Briceño

I don’t like how it goes from in game model to live action model back and forth during the commercial. But other than that, this is the commercial about XIII-3 that’s made the most sense so far.

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

    WHAT? no fashion show?!

  • The trailer’s not bad, I remember someone on ANN said that “why didn’t they used Ali Hilis for the live-action trailer”

  • revenent hell

This reminds me of when I was a kid and my mom and I would talk about what actors or well known people would make good characters if they where made in to movies.
99% of the time most of the cast became a different ethnicity…. Personally I’d have made Lightning mulatto.

  • leingod

She looks gorgeous, whoever she is.

  • Setsu Oh

Nostalgia and melancolia. two words too often associated wth ff…
