Persona 3 the Movie Makers On Staying True To The Game

By Sato . November 21, 2013 . 3:03am

Aside from the major Persona announcement this weekend, fans in Japan will have another piece of Persona media to look forward to with Persona 3 the Movie #1: Spring of Birth which which also comes out on the 24th. This week’s Famitsu magazine features an interview with director Noriaki Akitaya and Atlus sound developer Shoji Meguro

Director Noriaki Akitaya, who has directed anime titles such as Bakuman and Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion R2, starts out by talking about how his involvement in the upcoming film began.

“I’ve always loved Atlus games, and have been playing them since Shin Megami Tensei on the Super Famicom, so as soon as we began talking, I immediately jumped on it,” shares Akitaya with a laugh. “However, unlike a game that reflects a player’s decision, an anime is something that will be ‘viewed’ by customers. If we can get as many Persona 3 fans to feel something and enjoy the film, that is one of my focuses, of course, even as a fan.”

“As an anime creator, I seriously put a lot of thought into choices such as what to leave behind in the episode, and what to take out,” Akitaya says.

Famitsu asks Akitaya to share some more of those thoughts.

“The hardest part was getting the protagonist, who is ‘the player’ in the game, and making him into a character named ‘Makoto Yuki’ for the film, then figuring out how to integrate him into the story,” elaborates Akitaya. “Staying true to his speech and behavior from the original game is one of the more difficult parts of making it into an anime. I was very careful about getting the detailed gestures right, one by one.”

Shoji Meguro who worked on the music of Persona 3 shares some of his thoughts on the production of the upcoming feature film.

“Judging by what has been said thus far, I feel that they care a lot about Persona 3, and I truly feel grateful for it,” says Meguro. “I was also in charge of the music for Persona 4’s game and anime, and the enthusiasm shared by the staff members have always been great; it’s very reassuring.”

Next, Meguro talks a bit about Persona 3, which was released about 7 years ago, and featured a unique pop-like soundtrack with vocals.

“What made me decide to go with that composition, was the user interface that had a fancy atmosphere to it,” shares Meguro. “In order to make new songs for the film, I felt the need to give it a deeper feeling, so there will be many sounds from string instruments.”

Meguro also reveals that there are 10 new tracks for the film, and each one is made with a Persona 3 vibe in mind. When asked how the songs will be used during the movie, he mentions that the sound director balanced things out by deciding which parts should have the new tracks and which parts should have the game’s original music, instead.

Finally, a message from Akitaya and Meguro, for the fans waiting to see the movie:

Akitaya: “I believe that Persona 3’s charm lies within the coolness of the characters, more than anything. We pride ourselves in having made a movie that might just make you want to play the game after watching it, so please look forward to it.”

Meguro: “Just like we felt for the Persona 4 anime, it would bring us no greater pleasure than if you could look forward to both games and anime. By all means, please experience the world of Persona 3 with your very own eyes and ears.”

Persona 3 the Movie #1: Spring of Birth will be released in Japan on November 23rd.

  • Tatsuya Fabre

No idea how but I’m watching this on release day.

    • Lolzandstuff

Thats it. I’m selling my house, my kid and my wife to get a ticket to japan. This movie shall be mine!

      • Go2hell66

        how much for your wife

        • Lolzandstuff

What is the price on the current market? I could sell you a package.

“Staying true to his speech and behavior from the original game”

Main character never spoke…..so i’m guessing he never played the game.

    • Detrimont

he does speak, those options you pick for him, ARE him speaking

      • Masa

Wow, so stupid, that is not speaking…….

        • Detrimont

just because it’s not voiced does not mean it’s not spoken

        • http://amc9988.deviantart.com/ amc99

He did speak, he say “Per… So…. Na…” when first summoning his persona

          • DesmaX

And he does say the name of the Persona he’s using when it deals a critical hit

          • RisukuAozora

He also grunts and yells the names of his personas.

      • Rayhan PromisedGallery

the options are not voiced though

        • Detrimont

that doesn’t mean it’s not spoken

    • Guest

nah, he spoke only when deciding choice
      he doesn’t have voice though….

Also, the whole P3 cast won’t call main character by his name…

      • Lolzandstuff

He have a voice. When you use a move with a Persona you can hear him.

    • Akemi Nakajima

You might caught the right words. But that doesn’t mean he never played the game before.

    • ChiffonCake

He probably means the overall tone of the options that are avaible to the protag. If you compare his to, say, femc’s or Yuu’s, they all have quite distinct personalities.

    • Herok♞

Your right he didn’t speak he just always used telepathy to tell people the choices he was making. Just becasue you can’t hear it doesn’t mean its not spoken, the reason they didn’t voice everything is so the player can project themselves on to him

    • 하세요

You’re taking the word “speech” way too literally.

    • http://terracannon876.livejournal.com Laura

Persona has always been exceptionally good on giving their silent protagonists a personality. You can get a feel of their personality based off the choices you’re given and the art style and the other’s reactions to him, usually. For example, the maleMC and femaleMC from P3P are very different.

Actually, that’s what’s usually meant by “silent protagonists.” It doesn’t mean they’re actually mute… But every player has their own take on the personality, so finding something that resonates with everyone while staying true to the feel from the game is the difficulty he was talking about.

    • MSJ

      lol fucking jackass xD

  • Detrimont

then why is MC riding a bike….????

    • Ali

If i recall correctly, Mitsuru gave him her keys after maxing out her Social Link – She didn’t need the escape it provided her and for helping her come to this epiphany, she rewarded him with it

      • Detrimont

you can’t start her social link until much later into the game though, a part that wont be in the film
(and by later in the game, i mean after the school field trip, aka november(first film is only going up to fuuka arc))

        • Lynx

          Gameplay segregation and story segregation.

You have to consider the movie functions as a story, not a game. It’s not going to be 100% accurate as to require player input.

        • Sardorim

Most likely just added in because why not? Since this is only 4 or so Movies I don’t think many Social Links will get much development outside Fool, Lovers(Yukari), Death(???), Aeon(Aigis), and Judgement.

    • DyLaN

      A reference to P4G?

  • Niyari

    based meguro-san. too godlike

  • Go2hell66

    Shoji Meguro, THE GOD

  • echokanon

I want to see the protagonist going to drink coffee frequently. Just kidding…

    • Detrimont

  • Ric Vazquez

    HYPE HYPE HYPE!

  • omoiukabu

“10 new tracks”? My bread is already burning!

  • 하세요

I’m glad he is. P4 The Animation was nice but the different things that happened in the story kind of irked me, such as the Margret battle and other scenes.

    • Detrimont

i liked the margaret battle part of the anime…

      • 하세요

It was cool in its own sense, but I really wanted to see everyone try to battle her and get destroyed, then Yu rising up win.

        • César H. Sandoval

At least the P3 guys get to use their weapons, I hated the Persona-only based combat in the P4 anime.

  • Xerain

Of course we all know it’s going to be *SURPRISE* The announcement was made a day early after the movie’s credits!

Err it lists the movies as the 24th now? I thought it was supposed to be the 23rd?

  • leingod

Yukari <3 … yeah, I like Yukari, I'm in the minority who isn't a Mitsuru fan.

    • Sardorim

I love Yukari too. Great Main Heroine and she gets the most screen time with Makoto. She’s also the only character in the cast that can really relate to Makoto as well.

    • Sakurazaki

Really? I thought everybody liked Yukari > Mitsuru, lol.

I didn’t like anyone there, tbh.

      • leingod

Mitsuru is the fan favorite for all I know.

    • Warboss Aohd

it’s not dat we iz Mitsuru fanz………it’s dat we don’t like Yukari.

she iz……not very likable in my experience wit da game.

    • Tom_Phoenix

Frankly, I think there are more Aigis and Yukari fans than there are Mitsuru ones. The only reason why Yukari also ends up getting a lot of flak is due to her (occasionally) unwarranted bitchy attitude.

I never did understand the “rivalry” between Yukari and Mitsuru fans, though. Yukari and Mitsuru basically represent the heart and the mind of SEES; frankly, without either of them, the group wouldn’t be able to function (and indeed ceases to function after the events of The Journey). They’re the closest thing to a perfect duo the game had.

      • Sardorim

It’s because Yukari got more screentime and “Scenes” with the player character than Mitsuru did. All of Mitsuru’s stuff was in the SL, Yukari had a healthy dose between SLs and mandatory story events. Thus they fight and stuff because… Why not?

Funny thing is that Mitsuru and Yukari became great friends in the game and Mitsuru understood Yukari’s grief in the Answer and why Yukari tried so hard to bring “him” back.

    • Rohan Viajar

      It’s all about Fuuka <3

  • Sardorim

Really cannot wait to see these scenes in HD.

Yukari and Mitsuru meeting Makoto at the start
Freaky stalker Kid(You know who this if you played P3/P) scenes
    Yukari/Makoto Love Hotel scene
    Operation Babe Hunt
    Meeting Aigis
    Yukari/Makoto Beach Scene
    Junpei meeting Chidori
    Chidori’s big moment
    Hot Springs Scene
Aigis’s big scene in the game(You know the one!)
    The final battle

And many more. Tons of great scenes from P3!

  • ZekeFreek

I actually think this movie deserves subbed international release more than Madoka 3 does. Someone get on that, please.

  • Ecchi Pantsu

    Heal me Misturu-senpai

  • Luis Ibal

    <3 persona.

  • JohnNiles

10 new tracks?? Give it all you got, Shoji Meguro. It’s time for an all-out musical attack!

  • Brian Santiago

    Hope someone translates it quick!

  • Warboss Aohd

So Minato is going to act like the most pimptastic, swag sod in all the world?

cause that would be the most accurate portrayal of him possible.

    • colorblindnightmare

That was one thing that I felt P4 the Animationd did exceptionally well with yu. He was a blank slate and became totally awesome by show’s end. I believe (and hope) that they treat makoto woth the same temperment.

  • WyattEpp

“…making him into a character named ‘Makoto Yuki’ for the film.”

What happened to calling him Arisato Minato?

    • Warboss Aohd

i guess manga namez ain’t canon, did da same wit ‘Souji Seta’. Dunno why dey felt da need to RENAME da character.

    • Detrimont

the artist of the manga came up with it, not ATLUS

  • AndyLC

    >>Staying true to the game

    Meguro gets all the ladies.

  • Skeptika Crediblus

“As an anime creator, I seriously put a lot of thought into choices such as what to leave behind in the episode, and what to take out,” Akitaya says.

As an anime watcher and media consumer, I appreciate your putting thought and effort into this, as opposed to some jerks who just go “What the fuck!” and throw any old thing in there (Peter Jackson).

  • Vash bane

“I believe that Persona 3’s charm lies within the coolness of the characters, more than anything. We pride ourselves in having made a movie that might just make you want to play the game after watching it, so please look forward to it.”

if this works I swear I will finally finish the game lol
(playing p3 blind was a bad idea for me lol)
