Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth Takes Place In Yasogami High School

By Sato . November 24, 2013 . 3:27am

Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth will be taking place in Yasogami High School, the same school of Persona 4, where a mysterious tower appears out of nowhere. According to the rumors, whoever hears the bell will face death.

In Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth, you’ll be exploring a labyrinth with a five-man party of different chibi-style Persona 3 and Persona 4 characters.

There will also be new characters who’ll be making a debut to the series in the game. Additionally, there will also be various school events, where all the characters will be seen interacting with each other.

The game will be produced by Katsura Hashino, and directed by Daisuke Kanada. The character designs will be done by Shigenori Soejima, and music composed by Shoji Meguro, just like the main Persona RPG series.

Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth is slated for release on June 5th, 2014 for Nintendo 3DS.

Okay, a bit more info. This actually sounds like it could be pretty good. Sure, it’s not the Persona 5 that everyone was hoping for, but c’mon people, perspective here. At least it’s not another port of an existing game.

I have to say I’m looking forward to this. Especially with the prospect of new characters they say? Color me intrigued.

But given that this takes place in Yasogami, features characters from both games and all the P3 cast is still in their P3 appearance, I think this game will indeed be non-canon (still looks and sounds fun though)

    • Shippoyasha

Maybe the game’s story can take dark turns and twists and maybe even hint at some kind of a link to the ‘canonical world’ in P3 and P4. I wouldn’t rule anything out at this point.

      • Strain42

The crazy belief that I’m spreading is that this game takes place during P3/4 and is actually just Philemon playing with his action figures akin to Master Hand. This allows the game to be canonical, while also providing and explanation as to what Philemon was busy doing during the events of P3/4 :P

        • Kaetsu

lol Philemon playing with action figures.

    • Pombar

We now know that P5 is also coming, of course!

Some more info: The name “Shadow of the Labyrinth” is like Etrian Odyssey’s Japanese name (“Yggdrasil Labyrinth”), the director of this game was also the director of Etrian Odyssey 4, and that battle screenshot looks pretty much identical to the Etrian Odyssey battle system. The choice of a chibi art style also seems to bring the two together in this.

I guess they were happy with how well Strange Journey (a game that was itself quite similar to EO, while keeping true to SMT mechanics as well) did among the EO fanbase and went even further this time.

    • I think this game is NOT canon and is considered a funny project mostly.

    • Steven Higgins

Especially since the blue-haired one is clearly Minato/*forgot movie name* and not Naoto

  • Brian Woods

What about that dancing game? It looked absolutely terrible.

    • tubers

I’d rather have this than that dancing game.

      -Your BETA VITA neighbor.

    • Shippoyasha

I thought it looked fun for a spinoff game. Sillier the better I say with spinoff titles. I am loving the salt!

P5 is still coming guys, relax. In the meanwhile, I’m buying all these Persona games, enjoying them and supporting Atlus.

    • Kaetsu

Persona 4 Dancing All Night has convinced me to buy a vita

      • Brian Woods

Then this is good news. :)

  • Rodrigo Branco

Will this even be canon? LOL
    I mean, P3’s MC is here ._.

    • benhofb

Oh no… Hmm. Maybe it is just a collab for the hell of it.

    • Kaetsu

P3’s MC makes sence because of what happens in Elizabeth’s campaign in Arena.

      • Rodrigo Branco

I still didn’t finish everyone’s story mode but from what I had been told she gains the Fool Arcana or something like that in her ending

    • 하세요

At least he can be somewhat “explained” in some bullcrap way dealing with shadows and stuff.

There’s no excuse for Shinji. This probably isn’t canon.

  • Aspenharls

I was a little shocked and disappointed at first, but this looks pretty good. Etrian Odyssey, but Persona, so it might be OK.

  • hmm the interface kinda reminds me of Etrian odyssey

    • 3PointDecoupage

      Same company.

      • epndkempot

        Same engine.

        • Strain42

Same great peanut buttery taste with only half the calories. Mmm-mmm good!

        • Pombar

          Same director (as EO4).

    • Pombar

The guy who made EO4 is also the director on this game, and the name “Shadow of the Labyrinth” is almost definitely an EO reference – EO is called “Yggdrasil Labyrinth” in Japanese.

      • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

        And the Q as well

  • awat

LOL i want both this and the dancing game ,if they get localized im gettin it they look cool ,p5 for ps3 is still the best thing.

  • natchu96

I expect this to be non-canon since all the, um, dead guys are still here. And the ones that should be alive are younger.

  • Romancer Ecclesia

is this a spinoff or canon story?

  • Rake

The amount of Fan Service this game is going to provide..

  • Croix Zapp

    SO is this game canon?

    • I highly doubt it with P4A being the game actually continuing the story for P4 and P3.

This and the idol games are obviously spinoffs.

      • Kaetsu

Plus Shinji is in this game so that doesn’t make any sence.

        • Warboss Aohd

unless Female P3 protagonist woz canon……which unless i’m mistaken, she isn’t.

  • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

If this game is going to be like Etrian Odyssey with more straight forward rpg(without any dating sims system), i will consider getting this one.^_^

I simply never can get into Persona series.T_T If only the series clicked to me here.T_T

    • Rogerrmark

EO is very nice indeed, specially 3,4 and Untold, imo.

The first 3 games (P1,P2IS and P2EP)are dungeon crawlers with pretty dark and nice story. And zero Dating Sims elements.

Both Innocent Sin and Eternal Punishment are my favorite Persona games actually….although I like the all main games and expanded versions as well.

  • I’m excited for P5 but I’m REALLY looking forward to this one as well. Especially if it’s closer to an EO gameplay experience than regular Persona battle.

  • Ace Esper

Even if it’s only temporary, welcome back, Minato/Makoto.

  • Warren

I can have a team composed of Yukiko and Mitsuru! I am truley happy, the tears wont stop!

  • Rabbit

I need to know the timeline if it’s canon! After Suplex and before P5?

    • XaviIniesta

Since Minato and Shinjiro are in it I’m guessing it would happen around the time of both P3 and P4 at the same time, somehow.

    • Kaetsu

Persona Q can’t be cannon. In the trailer it has Shinji and Theo. Also it can’t take place after Arena because then Fuka would have her new haircut. This game doesn’t fit anywhere in the timeline.

      • Rabbit

        Well that disappoints me… : <

  • Vayu Purana

    Etrian Odyssey: Persona Edition

  • Reiswindy

    Yasogami Odyssey: Persona Q

I’m all in for this game! Not sleeping for 2 days was worth it!

  • Zoozbuh

Urghh.. Initially I was excited about this game. A Persona-related dungeon crawler spin-off on 3DS … But really not a fan of the Etrian Odyssey series- and with the same director, it looks like this will turn out VERY similar to that. It’s a shame, I don’t know if I’m alone here, but the gameplay and difficulty-level in EO just gives me a headache…. (And the lack of any decent plot too)

    • Kaetsu

Yeah but Hashino Katsura is the producer for this game and I’m sure the plot will be good.

      • Zoozbuh

Well that’s good, I may consider still buying it if the plot is decent…

  • Warboss Aohd

ok, sounds great, i hate First Person views, but i can get over that.

    • Kaetsu

I hated first person views until I played Etrian Odyssey 4.

      • InfectedAI

I like first person views, but it doesn’t feel right in a Persona game in my opinion.

        • Hahah, you miiiight wanna check out P1 and P2’s gameplay then

          • Ouch My Head Said Dionysus

            P2 isn’t first person, though.
But yeah, P1 kicked it off…

          • oh yeah, right, i was mixing up P2 and the PSP version of P1, haha

          • InfectedAI

I meant modern Persona game. Persona 1 and both parts of 2 are closer to the main SMT games than they are to Persona 3 and 4. Since this game is based on 3/4 I was hoping for the more modern approach.

  • Kevin

So is anyone else wondering when news of SMTXFE will be released?

  • kqk

So it’s like Shin megami tensei and etrian odyssey?

  • Edvaldo Pereira

This release date is only for the japanese version ? :s

  • brian

So it takes place in the setting of P4 but a tower appears and in one of the screenshots released on announcement looked like they were at Tartarus in P3?

  • Triplicity

    “music composed by Shoji Meguro”

Atlus, you could have had a Yuzo Koshiro on a Persona game, and you blew it!
