Deception IV: Blood Ties Shows Off Its Devious Pumpkin Head Trap

By Spencer . November 25, 2013 . 3:08am

Ah, Deception and its Rube Goldberg deathtraps. Players could crush enemy invaders in one hit, but it’s more entertaining to drop a pumpkin head on them first. Traps like the pumpkin head force enemies to walk a set number of steps forward right into a bear trap or a guillotine blade that knocks them into an iron maiden.

Since development of Deception IV: Blood Ties is led by Fatal Frame creator Keisuke Kikuchi, I’m curious to see what kinds of traps we’ll see in this game. Deception IV: Blood Ties is in development for PlayStation Vita and PlayStation 3.

There’s tons of blood but the body is still in one piece. I like it.

my mind is so much messed up that the first time i read Trap Action Game the wrong meaning of trap passed through my head…

    • FitzpatrickPhillips

Sounds like my kind of game!

    • Sardorim

Wait… I’m thinking of the wrong trap here, aren’t I?

  • Altin

Is it me, or one of the girl’s armor was broken by the trap?

    • Kai2591

Yup. Character’s armour breaks off after damage.

I still can’t believe this game is actually happening @[email protected] and getting a broad release even. I’m so happy people still go out of their way to make unique great games!

Will the characters be wearing clothing in the final release?

  • mirumu

I don’t especially like the way they’ve changed the character designs with this new game, but the gameplay looks to be much the same as before. I don’t like the way the enemy just warped into a standing position when the pumpkin head fell on him either. I guess it would make the game play slower to animate their motion more realistically, but it still looks a bit jarring. Hopefully they’ll tweak this sort of thing a bit as the development continues.

    • InfectedAI

Agree on the character design. Complete turn off that it’s so over sexualized. Makes the game less appealing in my opinion. There’s a time and a place, this wasn’t it.

  • Göran Isacson

    … hhuuuuh.

That was FAR more goofy than I expected. Hardly any gore, kinda blocky models but it’s obviously not a high-budget game so whatevs, it’s all about the concept and then… they lose their clothes when the traps kill them.

Real talk: I was expecting something far darker and gorier. This looks more goofy, like they don’t want us to take a game about luring people to their death TOO seriously. Has the series always been like this and I’ve just been mistaken the whole time, thinking it was rather dark and violent?

    • mirumu

The game mechanics were always fairly clunky, but the earlier games did feel less goofy than this generally speaking. There was never much gore, but some of the traps did look fairly deadly. The art styling was more medieval, and no one lost their clothes. The general mood was quite dark.

While I enjoyed the previous games a lot, and still plan to pick this up, I have concerns with the direction they’re going.

      • Göran Isacson

Ah, so I wasn’t completely off-base. It kiinda seems like they’re trying to fish for a wider audience here with these “humour”-parts, but… well, I’m not a follower of the franchise so it’s not like I know what it’s “spirit” is, but something about this trailer did feel a little bit off.

        • mirumu

It could just be they focused on the humour a bit more in this promo video. The older games had it too, but it wasn’t a major thing by any means.

    • Duo Maxwell

It could be like Yakuza, where the games doesn’t have gore, but shit does it feels hurt every time you landed one of those finishing move.

      • Göran Isacson

Mmm, I took that into consideration too. But at the same time, the executions they show here don’t really FEEL very meaty. They get hit by something, blood spurts everywhere but then the character just goes sailing through the air like a Tom and Jerry cartoon.

Reminds me of Trapt in PS2. Anyone???

    • mirumu

      It should. It’s the sequel.

  • Vash bane

i am motivated to continue trapt (now I just have to find it and my ps2 lol)
