Persona Director Talks Persona Q, Persona Dancing, And The Future

By Sato . November 25, 2013 . 12:06am

This weekend, Atlus shared a glimpse of Persona’s future, which included an RPG title for 3DS, a dancing rhythm game,  more on Persona 4 Arena’s upcoming sequel, and finally a reveal for Persona 5. Series director Katsura Hashino shares some thoughts and info on the latest announcements in a Famitsu interview.

Famitsu begins by mentioning that it must’ve felt like it was due time for the Persona team to make a new announcement since they revealed Persona 4: The Ultimate Suplex Hold this summer.

“Yes, this past year or so, we’ve caused you fans who’ve been supporting Atlus to worry, and we haven’t been able to find the right timing to bring you any announcements, so we truly apologize for that,” explains Hashino. “With the thought of being able to present a new game to you all soon, we zealously continued development, and are very grateful to have been able to make such an announcement this time!”

Next, Famitsu asks if the Persona producer and director could share a few words on the recently announced Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth, which they say appears to be a new Persona RPG with elements from the Etrian Odyssey series.

“Just like the experiment of making a fighting game based off the Persona series in Persona 4 Arena, which was also well received by fans, the plan of making Persona Q came from wanting a game that could bring further joy from an even more ‘unexpected element’,” shares Hashino. “This will be the first title the Persona team will be making for Nintendo 3DS, and we also have Etrian Odyssey that represents Atlus for the 3DS, and we’ll be using its system as part of a ‘festive’ collaboration mindset in the development for Persona Q.”

“While we are implementing Etrian Odyssey’s system into it, just as the name implies, Persona Q will be a completely new title, but first and foremost, it’ll be for the fans of the Persona series,” emphasizes Hashino, when asked about what kind of game system we can expect from it. “However, since next year will be the 25th anniversary of the Atlus brand, we’d also like to use this opportunity to spread the essence from other titles apart from the Persona titles.”

After having announced several new titles earlier this weekend, Famitsu asks about how far have they progressed in the development of the games.

l_528da403acf4f

Persona Q is just entering its testing phase, and we’re currently polishing its contents,” says Hashino. “As for Persona 4: The Ultimate Suplex Hold, the folks from Arc System Works are helping out, and the development progress is going very smoothly. By summer of next year, we’ll be delivering a very voluminous PlayStation 3 version.”

Persona 4: Dancing All Night, too, is pretty much done for the most part, but we’re about to make more dances and events for it,” continues Hashino. “We, the Persona team, along with Arc System Works, and Dingo, are strongly focusing on our objectives and giving everything we got to meet your expectations, and we’ll continue doing so!”

Famitsu then asks Hashino to share a little on the Persona series’ newest main-numbered title, which was finally revealed.

“We’ve kept you waiting. The title will be Persona 5, a proper main-numbered game of the series,” says Hashino. “Continuing from the previous Persona 4, I will be the director, Soejima (Shigenori) will be in charge of character designs, and Meguro (Shoji) will be composing the soundtrack.”

Finally, Hashino shares a message for the fans:

Katsura Hashino: “I truly apologized for the delayed announcement! The development staff are working together as one in hopes of making each title something that can leave you with pleasant memories. Again, we will keep making games for you fans who continue sharing your love for the games we make, so thank you very much for your ongoing support!”

Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth will be coming out June 5th, 2014 for Nintendo 3DS; Persona 4: Dancing All Night in fall 2014 for PlayStation Vita; Persona 4: The Ultimax Suplex Hold for PlayStation 3 in summer 2014, and Persona 5 for PlayStation 3 next winter.

  • InfectedAI

I just want to know if Persona Q will have the full 3D exploration around the world that Persona games have.

    • JustThisOne

From what I remember from the stream, exploration will be in first person. (Also, it’s done pretty stylishly. It looks like a 3D character sprite shows up when you open doors.) Battles have 3D sprites.

      http://youtu.be/fWzn4eDtNgI?t=16m17s

      • DragKudo

Really :D so they are kind of calling back to the first persona as WELL AS EO? That’s cool.

      • ecoutercavalier

Looks like the only visual difference from P3 and P4 is that the dungeon crawling is in first person. Has a very “Beyond the Labyrinth” look, based on the way that support characters seem to run beside you.

I know I said I didn’t want any more P3 or P4 stuff, but I’m still excited for this. Especially now that P5 is confirmed.

        • InfectedAI

Guess that means no exploring the school in 3D. Shame, but the game still looks cool.

        • Detrimont

on the mention of Beyond the Labyrinth, still waiting for an english release(yeah, i know it’s not going to happen), i still think it has the best graphics of any 3ds game so far

          • Daniel Jeanbaptiste

            Konami to blame

          • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

            Not with Ironfall out.

I’d also argue Capcom makes the best graphics on the syste

      • SetzerGabbiani

Just seeing this in-depth look at Q. I’m super hyped now! It may be a spin-off, but it looks like there was some real effort put into it; the production value seems excellent!

  • Crazy_O

Since there is P5 announced, the spin-offs are a great and welcome addition. Even though the melt-downs and drama leading to it’s announcemnt were funny, now they feel like cool adition in expanding the universe – I actually can’t wait for the dance/rythm game because I’m also a big fan of the soundtrack.

I will buy them anyway but I really hope Atlus looks over to what Squenix is doing and gives us a DLC option for the original voices. I don’t want to discuss what is better, I just want the option to decide myself – anyone should be ok with this.

    • Pekola

People were all, Et tu, Atlus? Et tu.

But then Persona 5 annoucement, and everyone and their mothers twerked.

      • M’iau M’iaut

I don’t know, a lot of folks seem sadly to be putting all their efforts into finding some small speck of gray.

Those folks can’t twerk happy if lives depended upon it :P.

      • Xerain

You left out the part where Persona 5 was confirmed years ago. Though it’s nice to know when it will be out, what system it will be for, and what color it will be.

        • Pekola

          It is as you expressed.

Knowing something will come and knowing when it will come are quite different.

  • Yggdr5

I really hope those titles will be coming to us in the west as well. Ever since Sega acquired Atlus I have the lingering fear that Sega will handle Atlus properties as they do with their own in regards to localization. And we all do remember how that worked out for Valkyria Chrinicles 3, Phantasy Star Online 2 and Yakuza 5 right?

    • Laith Rem

Considering that we are getting Conception II, I am not really worried. That shows that they are willing to risk some, so the titles that are assured to sell are coming.

      • xzeldax3

Yeah, but Atlus USA doesn’t get the final decision. Sega does now, and they may try to play things safe like they usually do and prevent niche Atlus JP games be localized.

        • M’iau M’iaut

There are far better things to be doing tonight than expect the worst. We are talking titles that are among the most recognized titles within our niche, by some of the most recognized developers and producers we have. Q is all but a given and the Persona version of Miku will have at least 2 if not 3 games released stateside in the genre ahead of it.

Let’s not make drama where there is none to be made.

        • NimbusStev

Again, like Laith Rem said, we are getting a super niche title like Conception 2. These are all Persona games, aka Atlus’s biggest franchise in the West. There is no doubt we will see all 4 games released stateside.

        • Daniel Jeanbaptiste

          Atlus is still a Publisher.

  • IshimaruKaito

i have no complaints WHATSOEVER but i wonder why they are making p5 for the ps3 when the ps4 would have been already out for a year? unless its gnna b for both platforms? i mean i don’t really care cuz i will be getting it regardless but i just wnna kno…..

    • artemisthemp

Most likely chose PS3, since it have biggest Persona fan base

      • Jason Ryer

ps4 has streaming through sony’s cloud gaming so its easier for a ps3 game to get everywhere.

    • LightZero

P3 and P4 came out well after the PS3 was release. P2 came out one year before the PS2. The PS4 is a new system that has yet to prove itself whereas the PS3 has a more established user base. Well over 80+ million in fact. Atlus wouldn’t make much from the PS4. The only one who owns a PS4 right now are the diehard fanboys and tech lovers. The bulk of the PS3 audience won’t be jumping on board for a long while. Thus it was smarter for Atlus to go for the PS3.

      • Detrimont

P3 originally released around 5/6 months prior to the PS3 release, just saying

    • Landale

They’ve been working on it for at least a couple years now. That and Persona isn’t exactly a system seller, and even with a year the number of people with a PS4 isn’t likely to match or outnumber people with PS3s.

      • M’iau M’iaut

I’d suspect more a couple of years. Some dev work on P5 likely started alongside p4.

    • Lusankya

Apart from the already mentioned reasons I might also add that they already began development way back in 2010 with no PS4 in sight. Maybe it was just to cumbersome to switch from PS3 to PS4 during development.

    • NimbusStev

Persona 4 came out on PS2 in 2008, 2 years after the PS3 had already been released. With a company as niche as Atlus, they go where their largest fanbase is. With the number of announced PS4 JRPGs at uh…. 2… there’s certainly no guarantee that their target audience will be willing to buy a new console just yet.

Besides, I still believe that Catherine was pretty much their test for Persona 5. They developed that engine on PS3, so they might as well put it to use on one more title before switching over to the next gen systems.

    • Bri-tastic

Because the already of ps3 development kits/knowledge for the PS3. Developing for PS4 would have meant buying new dev kits and learning a new system. That would have definitely delayed P5 even more. Whereas their budgets were probably approved for PS3. I also ageee with what was mentioned that they kept it in mind that the PS3 already has an estsblished playerbase.

  • imjustbettr

Hey guys I need a suggestion, I want to try the Etrian Odyssey games out.
Question is should I get EO4 or EO Untold?
Which is better for someone who knows nothing about the series?
    Which one is better overall?
    Thanks!

  • RazeXI

I’m just gonna come out and say this but honestly the people who were hate bashing on them during the stream should be ashamed of themselves. Granted they trolled the living hell out us, but to think not only are we finally getting Persona 5, but we’re also getting three other persona related titles in the same year to hold us off in the meanwhile. Bravo to Hashino and the P-Studio team for working so hard.

    • M’iau M’iaut

It’s even harder to take when admissions of P5 go back to that pachinko board which is what, four years ago? Apparently they had plenty ideas to work with — which with some patience on our part, we will soon enough experience ourselves.

    • natchu96

The fact that they have the time to troll us means they haven’t gone completely mainstream-large-company on us (well, they were always pretty far from it). Those devs usually end up somewhat dead serious about everything they put out, and it’s usually when things go downhill for their major series’ too . . .

imo, the fact that ATLUS is staying with the niche they made for themselves is keeping the existing fans anchored and their quality up pretty well.

      • fairysun

When more resource are put on advertising process than developing/creating purpose, that’s usually when things go downhill.

        • zeta

          you mean final fantasy?

    • Alexander Aubert

i’m ashamed of myself, i doubt atlus the company that got me in into the gaming world :”(

    • FlareKnight

I don’t think they should feel that bad. The whole point of the stream was to troll while making announcements so they were getting exactly what they expected from it. Get fired up during the stream and laugh about it while looking back on the event.

We got quite an amazing haul though of Persona games. Glad that things have stabilized enough for them that they could officially announce persona 5 and those other games. Can’t wait until we get more information about P5 in general of course.

    • LaserVision

How are they trolling? Who are they trolling? The whole thing was in Japanese. Would they give an interview in Famitsu to “troll” Western fans? That makes no sense.

  • Shippoyasha

See this, Capcom? See this, Sega? See this, Square Enix? If you guys are going to make spinoff games, at least do it right with full conviction like Atlus is doing and making each experiences look incredible in their own right. Plus, if you have franchises, make games for them.

I seriously hope Atlus being the brave company that Sega picked up as a publisher, some of this bravery rubs off on Sega so they can start releasing franchise titles and not sit on their hands thinking about the risk assessment. Please the fans, bravely make new games. Just keep working as game creators. I just have to applaud at Atlus’s work ethic in general.

    • Nitraion

Hmm Capcom, sega and square enix….
What spin off game you refer to?
you mean like Streetfighter x capcom , Sonic x mario games and Kingdom hearts 3D :??

      • Shippoyasha

With Capcom and Sega, it’s really more to do with them not releasing games, period as they only want to aim for mega blockbusters it seems. With Square Enix, they have truly inundated themselves with way too many spinoffs and ‘not quite a sequel’ games. They could have thought out the FF13 series a bit better, do a proper Final Fantasy Tactics sequel instead of stretching it to a strange FFT-Advance tangent, stretching Kingdom Hearts to constant semi-sequel territory all the time. Even at that, some of their spinoffs just seemed like they could have used a bit more purpose (such as all the iOS titles SE released over the past few years). Though stuff like Crisis Core turned out to be an incredible addition to the FF7 lore. Stuff like SFxT on Capcom’s side was way too hell bent on being a micro-transaction money maker with the ‘gem system’ and DLC packs up the gazoo. Not to mention Capcom’s phone games were a total disaster creative-wise like the Xover atrocity and the micro-transaction laden Megaman X.

To be fair Atlus did have some phone/browser games as well. And those tends to be easy fodder to just be run of the mill card games or mini-RPGs.

        • Nitraion

In that case you should say or comment about their business model… i kinda confused when you comment specific about “spin-off” title
Well about sega i do hope with atlus on side now they can localize more games that seem interesting to localize
SE , Atlus, Sega and capcom kinda simiilar in way IMO their mobile and IOS game is on the road…..
maybe what makes them diffrent is about how they deliver console games now DLC/Story or such…
but really in business way they kinda similar maybe SE and their FF titles is kinda flop up now in term of story and gameplay.. While atlus is still on the top

          • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Hahaha they are no where near similar.

            They’re all very different internally

            Especially capcom and square enix

        • James Enk

i just want to put this out there FFT Advance are amazing games and i am still hoping for FFTA3

          • Shippoyasha

I actually liked FFTA series, but a true FFT sequel would be a blockbuster announcement for me.

        • JonathanisPrimus

“With Square Enix, they have truly inundated themselves with way too many spinoffs and ‘not quite a sequel’ games.”

Because Atlus is somehow better. Let me remind you of something:

          Shin Megami Tensei 3: Nocturne – 2003
Shin Megami Tensei IV – 2013

          Persona 4 – 2008
          Persona 5 – 2014

Those weren’t the only Persona or SMT branded games between sequels either.

    • Xerain

As much as I love atlus and trust their judgement, I I will with hold my judgement until people actually get their hands on the games….

But seriously the Dancing all night game can’t possibly be bad. it has Rise front and center. Might as well call it “The Risecchi game.”

…and Kanamin, but no one cares about her; that over-polished fake.

    • Paradox me

I think you might be overselling their efforts just a bit, in addition to downplaying those of the other companies mentioned.

For starters, just how much ‘bravery’ is Atlus truly showing here? They’re a relatively small company using what is arguably their most successful, marketable brand and making:

-The next major installment in said franchise.
-A crossover between the two most popular titles in their most successful franchise, drawing inspiration from/namedropping Etrian Odyssey, another strong brand.
-Sequel to a previously proven fighting game spin-off.
-A rhythm game with a popular character; an established genre.

Quality games? Probably, considering those behind each (‘incredible’ might be a bit of a stretch at this point), but there’s much less risk for Atlus than there would be either Capcom or Square, who are some ~10 times larger in manpower alone. These sort of games are Atlus’s lifeblood, business as usual.

Square and Capcom could certainly do better, but it’s hard to dismiss games like Dissidia, Crisis Core, Birth by Sleep, Dream Drop Distance, Theatrhythm, 4 Heroes of Light, FFXIII-2, Type-0 (it’s a good game whether it’s in English or not), Okamiden, RE: Revelations, etc. simply because of a few bad apples like All The Bravest and Xover (i.e. legitimate offenders, not throwaway card games). In fact, many of Square’s spin-offs and handheld titles are what I’ve enjoyed the most this generation, and it looks like the 3DS could continue the trend–they just have to localize them.

      • http://gamgambit.tumblr.com/ Thespian Thief ♢

        This.

    • 하세요

Woah now, SE makes fantastic spin-off / side games. Let’s not blindly praise Atlus for one major announcement.

      • Herok♞

Yup Bravely Default, 4 Heroes of Light, Crisis Core, Dissida, etc all come to mind instantly and I could keep going

        • Kaetsu

          Tactics :D

          • RazeXI

            that’s definitely my fave

        • http://gamgambit.tumblr.com/ Thespian Thief ♢

All the Bravest, GREE card iOs gam—-
          *Gets shot*

But true, while there are bad apples there’s awesome spin-offs that make up for it.

          • Herok♞

well Atlus also has a few GREE card games for moblie, however they have nothing all the bravest levels

      • Shippoyasha

No doubt, there’s some gems in the midst. I’m just really frustrated with SE especially where most of their classic series are going nowhere plus how KH kept teasing with these side stories. At least KH3 is finally coming.

Sega and Capcom are arguably just as bad. Plus Capcom apparently running short on cash is quite worrisome.

I just feel like through the decades, it’s evident that Atlus, the small company that could has more of a sure footing than the supposed gaming giants.

      • Skeptika Crediblus

eeeeeehhhh… well, Tactics was good, anyway.

    • Kumiko Akimoto

Lol sega and square enix have very nice spin offs I don’t know what you are talking about,

    • TheAquacharger

So then when can I expect my demi kids and majin tensei sequels? I mean you said atlus doesn’t forget their ips. Or a sequels to nine and a real devil summoner sequel

  • Tatsuya Fabre

I really have to respect them for being so apologetic about the delay.

  • Tenabrus

giving everything to meet the demands of the fans for Persona 4: DaN huh?

I expect an Adachi and Dojima tag team dance off against Nanako and Yu

Also: Shadow Kanji and Speedo Kanji as playable characters.

    • Baylfire

That would be amazing! Adachi with the cabbage patch dance XD

Game developer 214: We’ll move to Europe!

Game developer 214: It doesn’t matter to ATLUS! They haven’t even got SMT IV yet!!! They’ll get P5 and Co. maybe in 2021! That’s our chance, LET’S GO!

      Other game developers: YEEEEAH!

I just hope P5 won’t be region locked…COME ON ATLUS! WE LOVE YOUR GAMES TOO!

      You are slave. Want invasion?

  • Maumac77

Would have been better if Yu was their manager in P4:DaN…..oh god the things I imagined…..never mind this is totally fine

  • AndreasStalin

I will, without fail, buy all of these. Something for my Vita, something for my 3DS and something for my PS3. ATLUS this is a really wise business decision, keeping the main players in the game (to me thats SONY and NINTENDO). Thanks for being considerate.

  • Ouch My Head Said Dionysus

Come on, throw us a bone with Persona 5. You guys said it was in development over two years ago, you can give us more than a picture of some chairs.

    • Detrimont

with a release date that is relatively close, expect trailers soon
(at least it’s better than Squeenix giving us a trailer and then nothing for years)

      • Ouch My Head Said Dionysus

Man. and I thought the gap between P2 and 3 was long. And they were initially going to end the series with Eternal Punishment that time!

  • Alexander Aubert

well…maybe i say i dislike the Q, and DaN. but when it’s atlus the one who make it. who am i to resist this unresistable resistance?

  • Rake

    >What Atlus actually means.

    2014, prepare your Chasity belts.

  • Natat

Is it weird that right now I’m more excited for Persona Q than P4C, DaN or P5? I mean for me a Persona game with Etrian Odyssey elements is, well, something I could have only dreamed till now. This is the perfect opportunity to have P3/4 with better dungeons, I always felt they were kinda tedious, while I absolutely love EO’s labyrinths.

    • http://denpanosekai.blogspot.com denpanosekai

Not weird. Really looking forward to it as well, on the other hand they have said very little about P5 so it’s hard to get really excited about it.

    • Shane Guidaboni

I never thought of that. A P3/P4 game with non-random dungeons? I wonder if it’s going to have some sort of skill system, or if you can level up skills on your Persona like the EO system. I’m getting giddy just thinking about it.

  • Croix Zapp

Glad to see Persona getting all the Spinoff and stuff.
It deserves much more attention than other franchise

  • http://shadious.tumblr.com/ Vince

All is well and in my opinion, worth the wait. Thank you very much sir, and more power to you and the franchise as a whole~!

  • Ariobimo Wicaksono

I’m still waiting for P1 and P2 characters to appear.

  • http://www.segalization.com/ Kuronoa

“However, since next year will be the 25th anniversary of the Atlus
brand, we’d also like to use this opportunity to spread the essence from
other titles apart from the Persona titles.”

    This is interesting.
I wonder if they will dig up their dormant titles like Rockin’ Cats, Kwirk, Snowboard Kids, Kartia and Power Instinct.

    • Rake

I hope for Shin Megami Tensei ports.. I know it seems unlikely, but I really hope they release Digital Devil Saga 1 & 2, Devil Summoner 1 &2, and Nocturne on PSN. But reason I heard why they’re not on PSN is due to SONY not updating their system for those games.

      • g4rr3tt

That will be amazing Phiruse,Digital Devil Saga 1 & 2, Devil Summoner 1 &2, and Nocturne are all amazing titles. Now that Atlus is on the radar of many gamers cause of Persona series it will be great to give a chance to older titles. But i am not holding my breath for that.
I also have to wonder if the latest drama with the company future was a factor for all these spin offs.I mean of course they will have made at least the Persona Q game, since it seems they have put a lot of effort in the game and they have already announced a game for 3DS..But the dance and more fighting? No that i am complaining, just wondering.

  • icecoffemix

    Simultaneous English release please!

    • ShawnOtakuSomething

That would be wonderful! Then we don’t have to wait till 2015

    • Nexus

Definitely! I’d love to get my hands on P4DAN as soon as possible!

    • TheRealMalek

I would do dirty things for that !

  • Skeptika Crediblus

The 3DS get an RPG, and the Vita gets a dancing game?

    AUGH!

    • Herok♞

Dude don’t be that guy, they said they were doing a Persona game for 3DS years ago, and there is literally no shortage of Persona goodness on Vita when you can literally get every released numbered game on it right now.

      • JonathanisPrimus

They also said there would be an SMT (not Persona) for Vita in 2011. Yet the only thing Atlus has announced for Vita since 2011 has been a dancing game. Oh, and you can’t forget that SMT they announced for PS3 back in like 2005.

        • M’iau M’iaut

Let’s please not declare a game or IP showing up on random lists as official announcements. Games move in and out of development between systems often enough as well.

          • JonathanisPrimus

I was refuting Herok’s point about 3DS deserving a new Persona RPG over Vita. He referenced that pre-launch list, so I referenced pre-launch lists that Atlus hasn’t made good on.

          • Herok♞

Who said what about deserving games? I did nothing of the sort, I was just stated something that was brought up nothing more or less, Vita and PS3 can still get an SMT game. I own both Handhelds, so I was going to get both games regardless of what they were on.

          • JonathanisPrimus

I highly doubt Vita or PS3 will receive a real SMT game after IV went 3DS.

          • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

It did have the highest series launch debut and its in the SMTxFE game

          • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

The difference in this case is that every other game on that pre-launch 3DS list has eventually ended up being released. The ones that haven’t have either been cancelled or turned into different games.

A lot of these 3DS titles have clearly been in the planning stages for a while because the publishing community had faith in the 3DS from the outset. That, or they weren’t in planning stages yet, but were meant to be developed at a later date, and the system’s success kept things going according to plan. That’s the main difference.

          • Kumiko Akimoto

Hey hey the 3ds version was just like that, it had no name and all it had was a small mention. You never know man.,

  • http://forums.rpgmakerweb.com/index.php?/topic/25050-farm-mapping-contest/#entry239430 Chaos17

I would’ve prefered to see trailer of P5 and teaser only for the spin off.

    • SnackEater

      I need to see gameplay!

  • Sergio Briceño

I must admit Q looks pretty. I don’t think I will be getting the dancing game though, because on one hand the genre doesn’t appeal to me that much and I think there are better options and on the other hand I’m not that big of a fan I would support spinoffs to that extent, I’m the kind of fan that would just sit angry on a corner demanding the next numbered game.

  • Akemi Nakajima

Yes, this is what I expect from Atlus.

The only thing remain uncomfortable in this event is the behavior of the some minor fans.

    • Rake

I’m one of the few who isn’t actually bothered by them.. The hype I’ve got from these 4 announcements has made me immune, nothing can destroy the hype I have right now~

      • Akemi Nakajima

        Glad to hear that actually.

      • colorblindnightmare

        FU, RIN, KA ZAN!

    • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

      Minor? Nope Major.
Platform bitching everywhere. Not just with persona fans

      • Akemi Nakajima

I know, I can relate to that.

But at least let’s positive thinking about it. There are also many reasonable fans like you and me, and the numbers of people like that are not small at all.

  • EX+

Awesome! Can’t wait for more info on all of these games!
I also think they will also be out in the West very quickly, considering the use of English and Japanese in most of the trailers.

  • Warren

Wow the PlayStation and 3DS owners are going to have a great year next year. Bring on all the Persona and KH Stuff!

  • Eder García

    where’s my Lego Persona Hashino-San?

  • Christopher McNair

I think they should have just made Persona Q multiplatform between 3DS and Vita nstead of making a rhythm game on Vita. Sounds like a serious waste.

    • Detrimont

but if Persona Q does fully play like etrian odyssey, it wouldn’t work on vita(meaning, the mapping system)

      • Nanaki

Reading the article indicates that even though it shares the same system as Etrian Odyssey, there’s no clear reason to tie the series nor the mapping system into this title.

  • MrTyrant

I’m only getting P5 and the new Arena version. I’m hoping a new smt game soon.

  • Rabbit

I want the dancing game for my vita… But out of all the new Persona games, that has the least chance of getting localized.

    • Bacon_n_Lettuce

Everything Persona related is always localized by Atlus, and in addition to that, Project Diva F’s localization was successful enough to warrant further localizations of the series. I don’t think there’s anything to worry about.

      • Rabbit

        Really? Hurray~

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

I wanted to see a Rise Pop idol game for a long time XD I’m shocked they didn’t make one on the psp years ago. But I’m more hyped for Persona Q. If this sells well, we might see other Persona games on Nintendo platforms as well. Besides that should keep us busy till P5, It might be coming out in the winter of next year but that also means that the translated version might come out sometime in 2015 >_<.

  • JonathanisPrimus

“it’ll be for the fans of the Persona series”

Oh, so the first three games in the series don’t exist. When Square Enix does franchise celebrations like that they usually start at the beginning rather than say Final Fantasy VII.

    • TheAquacharger

Yeah I’m with you on that I wish p1&2 is and ep got more love

      • JustThisOne

If Eikichi isn’t playing the music in the dance game, I’ll eat someone. :V

        • Rake

They need to add Lisa and Masao.. If P1 had more love, no doubt Atlus would sneak a ”Masao danced crazy” joke in the game~

    • JustThisOne

I loved P2s the most out of the series, but I would rather focus on the future. The fact they both got ports and little references here and there are good enough for me. Anything more now, will just be a delight surprise.

      • JonathanisPrimus

I was referring to Persona Q. How are P3, and P4 the future?

        • JustThisOne

:V Good point. I thought you just meant the entire series in general. P5 is the future, 3/4 is the present, P1/2 was the past. Despite 3/4 being milked to high heaven right now, even that will be in the past some day.

    • ShinobiBrown

Agree x2. With PQ being a complete offshoot Persona spin-off game for Persona fans in general, there really is no excuse to not include the cast of P1 or P2. It would be like if Dissidia only starred characters from VII and up. The reality is PQ is for fans of P3 and P4 because it’s been bringing in the most money. It does suck how much they’ve been ignoring P1 and P2. I guess the sales for the PSP ports discourage them to even acknowledge them?

    • imjustbettr

I’ll have to look thins up, but are the people who made 3/4 the same as 1/2? If not, that may be the reason.

    • Kumiko Akimoto

Yeah i think you spelled 13 wrong

    • http://gamgambit.tumblr.com/ Thespian Thief ♢

You mean a game representing an anniversary celebration? Yuh, they did a good job with Dissidia and Theatrythm.

But outside Dissidia when individual entries had their anniversaries, VII on it’s 10th anniversary got new artwork and a new game, VIII and IX though didn’t even got mentioned in their anniversaries .A.

I think companies will always take more priority on their current works and their most successful release heh.

      • JonathanisPrimus

But Persona Q isn’t celebrating an anniversary of P3, or P4 but rather Atlus as a whole. As Hashino says, “it’ll be for the fans of the Persona series” yet the game doesn’t seem to acknowledge the first game, or the duology of P2.

        • http://gamgambit.tumblr.com/ Thespian Thief ♢

          Oh.

Well yeah, that’s a pity then.

  • sakusakusakura_nyo

I hope the female MC from P3P is playable in Persona Q.

    • SnackEater

Me too, also I hope Persona 5 has a female mc :)

    • Detrimont

while theodore was in the trailer, FeMC wasn’t, so i don’t think she will be(i wished she would be as well)

      • Christopher Nunes

Does that include Labrys as well?

      • http://thespellcraftcolumn.wordpress.com Rudolph Consuegra

I think that’s because she is an alternate MC and if both of them existed in the same universe, it would be an alternate universe whether they are SPOILERS

        dead or not.

    • aviaremake

i hope so too..kind of disappointing if she didn’t appear..:(

  • Baylfire

I’m getting more and more excited for those other games until Persona 5 comes out. Really glad to have such great people at Atlus :>

  • Saphiren

    I like him :D

  • Steven Higgins

Just a thought but, P3 and 4, while being separate games, take place in the IS universe, right?
So what if P5 and possibly 6 took place in the EP universe?

    • personablaze

      Hmm…

I don’t want to spoil anyone that hasn’t played it but SPOILERS BELOW

I thought in the IS universe, all humans outside sumaru city were dead? wouldn’t that mean that the current persona games take place in the EP universe? (I could be wrong though, it’s been YEARS since I played EP.

      • Total_Overdose

Yes. It is the post EP universe. In IS, everywhere but Sumaru City is destroyed, that’s why the party wants to turn back time (besides saving Maya of course).

      • Steven Higgins

Unfortunately, I haven’t played anything before 3, I’m just going by what I’ve heard. I think Maya was on a show in 3 and wasn’t she only alive in IS?

      • Nathan Topousis

Since Tatsuya remembers the events of IS in EP, it’s safe to assume the IS universe doesn’t exist anymore, and was rewritten by the events in EP. So, there is only 1 universe.

  • http://mizzi-sama.tumblr.com/ Pinkyuu

They need a hug cause really they had apoligized to the fans and i found that so sweet.

  • http://epiclyamazing.wordpress.com/ AzureNova

After reading this, I’m looking forward to all of them =)

  • Asuna Ilano

Remember when Persona used to be an RPG with dark, mysterious and creepy theme? Pepperidge farm remembers.

  • Rogerrmark

Persona Q is having a shitstorm because it looks like Etrian(that’s just based on Wizardry,NOT a clone)..sigh

I’m looking forward a lot to it.The director seems good enough to deliver an excelent game, from my past experiences with EO.

People will just rage and go full retarded for everything, man.

  • colorblindnightmare

The wait for the announcement was almost unbearable *queue teddy drum roll* The only thong you announced that had nothing going for me was the dancing game. I know a ton of people who will lap thay one up though. Thank you for the heartfelt aplogy and don’t lose your drive! Fight on to the bitter end!

  • Nagi

    Missed minato sooo <3

  • Chip

    1. Dance games are popular in Japan, and P4 characters would suit the style. One of their characteters is a freaking celebrity.
    2. They never release on new consoles. Frankly consoles should just stay backwards compatable until companies understand them enough to make quality games, rather than force them to create subpar launch titles that always suck.

Anyways. Persona has never been about realistic graphics, so there’s really no reason for it to jump on the PS4.

  • Rake

Putting P5 on PS4 is risky. Atlus knows it will sell more on PS3. No matter if the console is dying, every Persona fan would instantly get P5 on PS3.

  • Ethan_Twain

You mean you want Atlus to make their big sequel RPGs in a timely manner and you want them to take advantage of the most advanced hardware available? Do you want AAA production values, spinoffs into genres that are popular in the West, and an unwillingness to use characters in genres that make them seem “uncool”.

Sorry buddy, look to a different company. Atlus does weird Niche JRPGs, does almost entirely handheld and mobile software, and designs their products for Japan first. A company to shy away from a dumb dancing game Atlus is not. A company to get on the next big thing Atlus is not.

  • JonathanisPrimus

P5 wouldn’t be a launch game, and Atlus released P4G on Vita, a Devil Survivor Overclocked on 3DS within a few months of launch.

  • http://s932.photobucket.com/ usagi_san

    Both were enhanced ports.

  • JonathanisPrimus

As one would expect a Persona 5 on PS4 to be.

  • http://s932.photobucket.com/ usagi_san

As one would expect a Persona 5 on PS4 to be.

Really? When the PS3 has such a large userbase, and therefore maximise their returns. The PS4 will get Atlus support, eventually.

  • JonathanisPrimus

The first user is asking for a cross gen release of Persona 5. Meaning, a release on PS3 and PS4.

  • http://s932.photobucket.com/ usagi_san

Well, Atlus probably consider that not everyone will make the jump to the PS4 immediately – considering the console still has titles and life in it. Also, they plan to use what they’ve learnt from Catherine, on a console with (relatively) lower development cost. Just guessing.
