Hometown Story Has A Demo In Japan

Hometown Story, developed by the creator of Harvest Moon, Yasuhiro Wada, is already out, but we’ve got word that there is now a Japanese demo available on the market. This Nintendo 3DS demo will give you 10 days of in-game time to tinker around with, and has been adjusted to accelerate its initially plodding pace.

For the uninitiated, Hometown Story is about a boy who discovers he’s now the owner of his deceased grandmother’s shop. And then proceeds to start it up with an alien… thing… called Pocahontas Pochicha. You ring up items daily to sell for profit to the obliging townsfolk while scavenging and buying new items to hawk off for ridiculous prices, all in the hopes of upgrading your store and eventually, somehow, obtaining all the “Blue Feathers” of the game to obtain a wish.

The townsfolk and characters who populate the world number a nice figure of 100, rare for such generally simple titles, and do stand out a little from each other enough to be memorable. Actually, scratch that, checking out the characters is probably a highlight, they’re so adorable.

Hometown Story is out now for the Nintendo 3DS.

I’ve heard this game is rather mediocre. What did you guys think?

Complete and total pass. One of the few purchases for my 3ds that I completely regret. Go pick up Recettear on Steam, even at full price, over this.

Is that for real ? But why ? :(

From the previews, I was expecting story or dialogue or at least decent shopkeeping. Instead I get throw into the game and told “Um… here’s a shop. Go do… stuff.” like it can’t be assed to do any more. Characters in the hour or two that I played were bland and 8/16-bit level repetitive in dialogue, which is even worse when you’re coming off of something like Rune Factory 4. In comparison, Recettear made me feel invested in the story and characters with conversations that would actually change and a much greater selection of things to do, see, and sell.

    • Totally agree with Taedirk below. Total regret of a purchase.

There are so many reviews of it now that sum up my thoughts perfectly. If only I’d been able to read them (or try a demo), I could have spent my $40 elsewhere. Such a disappointment.

I heard it was meh but I was able to create an Eren lookalike in the Japanese demo, so I’m pleased enough. I’ll get back to it later. >_>

Any news on the iOS version? The one with in-app purchases, but also is to be where you enter all the passwords accumulated through reaching achievement-like milestones in the 3DS version?
