Dragon Quest VIII Journeys To Smartphones On December 12

By Spencer . December 2, 2013 . 1:59am

Square Enix just brought the original Dragon Quest over to iOS and Android devices (and you can get it for free!). Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King is next since it’s slated for release on December 12. This is actually the first port of the PlayStation 2 game and like the smartphone version of Dragon Quest it uses a vertical orientation.

If you thought the Final Fantasy ports were pricey, Dragon Quest VIII raises the bar and will be sold for 2,800 yen ($27).

Why is every classic being ported to smartphones?!

    • John Diamond

wanna port over Dragon Quest I-VI? ok fair enough it’s on other consoles.
but damn this game? this game’s worthy of a console port at least man,

      • Zangetsu777

I Know Right!!! Why does Dragon Quest get no love.

    • Cause Japanese love their phones and play lots of games on them.

  • Rogerrmark

    What a lame new camera.

  • Virevolte

As long as anybody who has missed it on Ps2 can play it. It’s fine.

  • bushin

Might have to dust off the PS2 and play this badboy again!

  • Ben Green

Why port it to smartphones when they can just port it to the 3DS, and it will probably sell much better, and be a much, much more enjoyable game? the people over at Square Enix are idiots.

  • BillyMK

This game deserves a HD version like FFX

    • Zangetsu777

      THANK YOU!!

    • NickyArmstrong

So play it on a larger tablet. The better ones have resolutions higher than HD.

      • Maybe he doesn’t wanna buy a larger tablet :)

      • Fox

Doesn’t seem like that would matter much. Since the game is (for some reason) displayed VERTICALLY, it only takes up 1/3rd of the screen, so even on a 1080p tablet the resolution wouldn’t be much higher than the PS2 version.

    • Pockystix

and at a MUCH better framerate. . .

    • Yes, this times a million. DQ VIII will probably age better too since it was in glorious cell shading.

  • persona_yuji

They could have made an Hd port for home consoles, heck they could have made the port for the 3ds or the Vita as well…but nope…smartphones… *sigh*
    Fine whatever.

    • From a business standpoint, they make money on a quicker port, not to mention that the mobile gaming thing is pretty big.

      • I wish they’d release it in the West as a PS2 classic on PSN. Seems like free money, but I guess it’s more complicated than that.

        • Steve Raineault

Its not. They can do it easily. They refused to ever advertise DQ properly and then blamed the series for not taking off in the West. What do you expect?

          • Maybe it’s something to do with Nintendo basically taking over the series. The whole thing is just damn depressing. I think Square-Enix actually makes less sense to me than even Nintendo does, and that’s saying something.

          • Steve Raineault

This comment is spot on and whoever gave it a down vote is likely mental.

          • ha, well thank you! I’m not sure why someone would downvote that, but it was probably a misunderstanding somewhere along the line.

          • I’m pretty sure IX sold a lot here… didn’t it?

          • Steve Raineault

Yeah, thanks to NINTENDO ADVERTISING it! SE was about as useful as tits on a bull in that one.

          • I don’t know. It dropped in price really fast, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it didn’t sell. If it sold really well, then you’d think Nintendo would want to get us all the DQ they can as quickly as possible, particularly the remakes of DQ Monsters 1 and 2 and the DQVII remake. And Rocket Slime 3 for that matter (I think that’s 3DS?)

          • Steve Raineault

If you want to check out my “give SE a piece of your mind” site, go to operationedenverse.com . Spread the word too. I can only reach so many people at the Dragon’s Den.

          • Okay, I will do!

          • Steve Raineault

            Thanks man!

          • Signed the petition and e-mailed Phil and Square Enix USA/NA. :)

          • Steve Raineault

Thanks! Are you on the Dragon’s Den? woodus.com/den will take you to the biggest DQ forums out there.

          • I’ll check it out!

        • I agree, Dragon Quest VIII is one of my all-time favorite RPGs.

          • Me too! I think the PS2 RPGs I had the most fun with out of anything were DQVIII and Suikoden III. I haven’t replayed either, though, don’t even have Suikoden III anymore, and sure wish they’d show up on the PSN. :(

          • Yeah, I have that sudden desire to replay some classics, HD or not :(

  • James Enk

yeah give this amazing game to ppl that don’t care about it, let’s see how smartphone gamers outside of Japan will react to this price
p.s. pls bring DQVII on the 3DS to the west

    • yomachaser

Pure BS I game on all sorts of devices and I would love to have this on my phone. Hem and haw all you want mobile is a great part of gaming and some good games will end up there.

      • James Enk

obviously i am not talking about you or me, i have a smartphone i can pick this up, i am talking about all the angry birds, cut the rope, temple run, flick your finger around the screen, yeah i got a free game or a game that’s worth 5euros/dollars now i am a gamer kind of ppl

  • idrawrobots

I wouldn’t be bothered by this if we would have gotten 3DS VII or Wii/WiiU X.

  • Lilith

I have this game but could never play it due to PS2 breaking down. I would have preferred a 3DS/Vita version but this will do. At least it’s still portable.

  • DanielGearSolid

Hate big talent, big IP smartphone spin-offs, but ports aren’t bad. The more ppl can that can play it the better. Im currently replaying Valkyria Chronicles 2 on my smartphone, and loving it

  • Yikes. As much as I love this game, love DQ, and would like to replay this one, I don’t think I’d pay $27. I doubt my crappy iPhone 4 can run it anyway.

  • NeoAthanasius

More like Dragon Quest VIII frames per second. Ick!

  • Steve Raineault

Wouldn’t it be nice if SE started treating and advertising this series in the West with the same reverence they use when they are whoring around KH and FF non stop?

Seriously, SE, I continue to NOT purchase any products from you that don’t bear a DQ logo. There’s a second hand market if I choose to play a Final Fantasy title. Until you stop treating your absolute finest series, Dragon Quest, with the respect it deserves, please do not expect any financial gain from my wallet.

Begin treating DQ right and I’ll become a customer in general.

  • Steve Raineault

BTW SE, I bought DQ8 back in 2006, beaten the game, and have never taken the Final Fantasy 12 demo out of its holder in the case. I may very well chuck out the FF12 demo disc someday.

  • Christopher McNair

Sony should really have gotten this for the Vita. It needs it way more than iOS or Android does.
