Bravely Second Producer Aims To Create A New Pillar Of Support For Square Enix

By Sato . December 12, 2013 . 1:30pm

We recently reported the first real set of details on Bravely Second, the sequel to Bravely Default, where producer Tomoya Asano talked about new character Magnolia, and how there will be more things to do in the upcoming RPG. In the same interview, conducted by Famitsu magazine, Asano and character designer Akihiko Yoshida shared a few other tidbits regarding the game as well.

“There were actually several concepts, but out of all of them, the idea of ‘surpassing the previous title’ left the biggest impression,” shares Asano. “We were aware that the previous title was to get fans to like the characters and world, so we decided to have a sequel that takes place several years later, and has more to do with Luxendarc.”

Asano also mentions that a number of details have yet to be decided—Bravely Second is only 30% of the way through completion—but announcements regarding these will be made at a later point in time.

Magnolia, Bravely Second’s protagonist, was created during a scenario brainstorm meeting, after the keywords of “people of the moon” and “returnee” came to mind.

Character designer Akihiko Yoshida and the others originally thought about giving her some kind of space outfit along with bunny ears, but they decided to go with a character who showed “adultness,” as it was a feature that was lacking in the characters of Bravely Default.

Thanks to the experience the team acquired from making Bravely Default, Yoshida believes that we will see a game that is much more polished than before. He also mentions that the illustrators are currently working on characters and job designs, and many of them will be quite unexpected, so he wishes fans to look forward to that as well.

Finally, a message for the fans from the producer, Asano:

“As we did previously, and for the sake of Japanese RPG fans, we’re developing with the goal to create a new pillar of support for Square Enix, while surpassing the previous title. I believe that it may take a little while longer until you’ll get to play the game, but we’ll be revealing new information little by little, so I hope you continue supporting us while looking forward to what’s coming.”

Bravely Second is currently in development for Nintendo 3DS.

  • The picture looks like a perfume ad for Chanel.

Looking forward to this in the NA. Europeans, I shake my fist at you in jealousy!

    • PreyMantis

Yeah… I think you’re looking too deep at the picture :P

      • T’was but a joke, sir crabby pants. Nothing more, nothing less

  • Shippoyasha

Aww. Space outfit with bunny ears sounded awesome.

But love how this girl looks. Her Zettai Ryouiki is extremely potent and definitely adult tier!

    • Namuro

      Yeah, she’s lovely, ain’t she?

But… Isn’t her dress a little too exposed for it to be ZR? LOL

    • fyi1191

      Moon bunny girl?
      Udongein, approves of that idea.

  • Rogerrmark

If the illustrators are working in both characters AND job designs, one could assume there WILL be a whole new cast and jobs? I really hope so.

The group of the first game is really appealing, but new ones are always welcome.

    • Armane

Well all the characters are now a few years older, so they’ll need a little redesigning anyway.

  • Detrimont

an alien girl with bunny ears reminds me of Haruko from FLCL in ep 5/6

  • mojack411

Thank god they didn’t do the alien girl with bunny ears idea. A supporting character ok, but I probably wouldn’t have been able to take the game seriously at all if the main character was like that.

I’m kinda sad now that they announced this so early. Who knows when it’s going to finally come out and it’s just going to be painful waiting for it now.

  • Minos

Sorry, I can’t stop watching that leg.

    Is it broken?

    • PreyMantis

She just has really chibi feet.

    • The heels on her boots really freak me out actually

    • Pockystix

if the 3DS has taught me anything, it is that feet do not exist

  • D-Omen

Loving the first game to bits! They want to surpass it, huh? I’ll make sure my body is ready by then.

  • Warboss Aohd

wait, they want this to become a supporting pillar?

Of Course, cause they clearly don’t have a plethora of Western and Japanese IPs of various genres they could call upon, like say Saga Frontier or The Bouncer.

Before any of you say anything, i’m not insulting Bravely Default, i actually plan on BUYING that game, i’m just saying is all.

    • César H. Sandoval

I’ll give you SaGa, but The Bouncer?

I’ll take more Bravely games instead, thanks.

    • neocatzon

The Bouncer lives within Kingdom Hearts, let them rest. As for Saga.. we need that. Well, at least this pillar is not another mobile game.

      • KnifeAndFork

        Sion is Sora’s deadbeat dad…

    • mojack411

I would love to see some more The World Ends With You but I’ve long given up on that prospect.

    • Neophoton

I’m under the impression Drag-On Dragoon 3 is a test for their dormant IPs.

I’m probably wrong, however, and it just happened to be the team asking at the right time to do the project or something.

      • Arcana Wiz

actually you’re right, in a interview they said that they will see if using old ips is profitable by Drakengard 3. I think it is even here in siliconera.

        • Neophoton

Is that so? I’d be down for seeing them return to old IPs, provided they do it right (and not results like the recent Front Mission).

      • Warboss Aohd

        …..good point actually.

    • It isn’t always about resurrecting dead IP, you know. It’s also about what their creative staff wants to work on. If there’s no interest from their directors in a particular franchise, it’s going to stay dead. Asano’s clearly attached to Bravely Default, as is Yoshida. They created the series together, so it makes sense they would want to grow it.

  • I don’t mind waiting for awesome. Thank you Asano =)

  • Neophoton

    [hyping intensifies]

  • Kuromadou

    these feelings..

  • Pockystix

so I take it Bravely default will be SE’s hope?

    • Zonned87

SE didn’t even think the game was worth publishing outside of Japan. It only came because Nintendo agreed to localize and publish it… im not sure how much money SE got out of the deal…

      • Pockystix

it’d be interesting if SE drops the series (due to their usually overly high sales expectations) and Nintendo saves them (ala Bayonetta 2)

I could imagine BD for the Wii U earning them some praise (or some hate, like some of the less grateful Bayo fans. . .)

Still, I hope the best for this series. If we can show SE that these are the games we want, we can change their minds on how much they’ve been focused on radically changing everything and it’s grandma.

  • sammy11

    Just take all my money….

  • Zonned87

Hopefully they actually bother publishing this game in America and don’t leave the publication and localization up to Nintendo like they did the first one.

  • FlyingPony

Yup. Keep all the RPG flowing in, SE. Learn to know what fans expecting from jRPG genre, and keep making the well-thought game like Bravely Default.

  • J_Joestar

A new Pillar to support the company is all well and good, I just hope that that they use this new brand and the money it generates wisely.
Last thing i want to hear is that profits from BD games are all being directed into their mobile division.

  • Ric Vazquez

My body is ready for both games, wallet not somuch because almost everyone decided to throw their high profile games on Febraury and March, I mean come on, Lightning Returns, Bravely Default, Toukiden, FFX HD, Conception 2 and more, broke months for me XD
