Persona 4: The Ultimax Ultra Suplex Hold Adds Extra Character And Tutorial Mode

By Spencer . December 13, 2013 . 3:16am

Arc System Works released an update for Persona 4: The Ultimax Ultra Suplex Hold that unlocks Sho Minazuki… the other Sho Minazuki whose name is written in katakana. The patch also rebalances the game and adds a training mode for arcade players.

Training mode lets players pick the opponent and the CPU’s attack style. You can choose dummy, normal, shadow or boss. Persona 4: The Ultimax Ultra Suplex Hold for PlayStation 3 will probably have this training mode and the score attack mode already in the arcade version when Atlus releases it in summer 2014.

    …Didn’t we already know this?!

    • Detrimont

      not the training mode stuff

    • The previous post only addressed the inclusion of Minazuki. This post comes from Arc Sys’ latest patch note which includes a mention of the training mode

      • Freud_Hater

I stand corrected… though it’s kinda minor when the controls were pretty simple anyway ‘-‘

        • Natat

Ummm not at all, training mode is essential in any fighting game. While controls may be simple, the best combos and BnBs are never as much, and are found much earlier when you can practice them on a dummy. Besides, there’s the practicing combos on different characters with different hitboxes, changes of timing, combos that won’t work at all on certain characters… there’s much more to training mode than trying out how normals and specials work.

        • Kelohmello

Training mode is more than just getting used to the controls. Finding setups for your character, figuring out advanced combo routes that are much harder to figure out against a moving CPU that can read your inputs, these kinds of things just make you end up wasting your time if you have to do them in arcade mode. And certain combos are still gonna be difficult regardless of simple controls, so grinding them in training makes everyone’s life easier.

  • Arcana Wiz

Ahhh with the headline i thought another character would be added *coughminatocough* but ah well, this is looking great and i cant wait for it! :3

    • Romancer Ecclesia

nah that’s too precious to reveal right now. Minato’s getting ready to sell limited edition P5 PS3s bundles when he finally descends upon mankind once again.

      • Kumiko Akimoto

I hope they don’t bring him back

    • Stephen

I feel like they’d probably save Makoto for some sort of tie-in with the movies…

    • Steven Higgins

Game is canon. Minato cannot come back. No mater how much you want him to, Makoto cannot be in any canon P3/P4 game, unless saving him is the focus of that game (or time travel is involved somehow)

      • Arcana Wiz

1 elizabeth already was confirmed to be in a mission to rescue him

2 even if he doesnt appear in the story i kinda want something like order sol in GG (another Arc series) that his story is by flashbacks.

        • Steven Higgins

Exactly what I mean by “unless saving him is the focus of that game” I’m sure that, if they were to bring him back, they would do it in a game featuring Elizabeth as the MC of that one. I’m just saying he can’t be in THIS game because they’d want to explain, in detail, how he was saved. I can see the flashback thing but usually when they say “Game adds extra character” they mean playable. I suppose, since they’re all fakes anyway, there could be a Shadow Minato/Makoto to screw with the Shadow Organization’s (that is what SEES calls themselves now, right?) heads like in “The Answer”

      • Servant BerserCAR

Persona 4 Arena 3: The Journey of Elizabeth Knocking the Abyss’ Door.

    • The only reason Minato isn’t in it already is because he’s supposed to be dead or something. It’s a conundrum or whatever you call it. Everyone wants him in, I bet the dev’s do too, but then they’d have to come up with something to bring him back to life.

      • Arcana Wiz

no he isnt dead… and like is id below they could add him and his story being flashbacks of the p3 cast.

        • Raze

By seeing the shadow run amok in this P4U…
Atlus at least can give us Minato’s Shadow like P3FES…

But I don’t really need him tho…If they confirmed Adachi as fighter….

        • It’s been ages since I played P3, I can’t remember…but I’m pretty sure he did something at the end to save the world and everyone thinks he’s dead…

          • DyLaN

            SPOILER ALERT for P3 newcomer:

Well, his human body is underground but his soul or something became a seal for Erebus.

          • AnotherTime

It was Nyx! Come on, man! Nobody wants to seal Erebus! He’s too cool for that!

  • komiko12

If it’s written in katakana, then could it be that character is artificial or maybe foreign?

  • Crevox

What makes this a tutorial mode?

  • …Hm, the mystery that remains in terms of playable characters is Adachi. So far, he’s been popping up in scaps for Story Mode of certain characters.

    • Arcana Wiz

probably he will released as a playable character in the console release?

      • Or, the only hidden character in the game whose portrait box is way offscreen. :p

  • Arizato

All the more likely that we will see more characters in the console release!

    • Arcana Wiz

i wish, like the rest of P3 cast, Ken, Minato/Minako, the dog.

      • Rake

Doubt Minato/Minako will make it in. Arc is only adding characters that will have a part in the story. And by the looks of it, Arena is going to have more games than just two, so Minato may end up being in a later title.

        • Arizato

I really hope they will complete Elizabeth’s story arc, because it ended on a real cocktease note in Arena. I really want Minato/Makoto as a fighter sometime, because that would make this my instant favorite fighter. Especially since Arena is one of the best fighting games ever for me. Not only because of the characters and story, but because of the great and easy to learn system that makes this a blast to play for everyone.

          • Rake

All of us want certain characters in. I’m hopnig Arc adds Tatsuya Suou, Kei Nanjo, and Naoya Todo in a future game seeing how those characters are still alive. And knowing who the Malevolent Entity can actually be, makes sense to add those characters.

        • Arcana Wiz

even if he doesnt appear in the story i kinda want something like order sol in GG (another Arc series) that the story is by flashbacks.

      • Servant BerserCAR

Seconded. I sincerely hope that Atlus will consider to bring Koromaru or Ken Amada to the Arena. It is always interesting to have spear wielder or quick/agile-short fighter in a fighting game.

Especially Koromaru, because I can’t stand those “Mitsuru’s Coat” joke. -_-“

        • Kaetsu

Koromaru couldn’t be a fighter. He’s too small.

          • Servant BerserCAR

I suggest you look at Marvel vs Capcom 3. It has Amaterasu, a dog fighter (she is my personal favorite, too) What I meant is that a dog fighter is possible. Atlus/ArcSys can take a look from Capcom’s example and put it on their Arena. Still, this is just my humble wish, though.

          • Pinwheel

What? No. Odds are he’s bigger if so much time has passed. Not to mention other dogs in fighting games. Amaterasu in MVC3 and Iggy in JJBA:ASB worked out pretty damn well as dogs with small hitboxes.

        • Arcana Wiz

          mitsuru coat…. LOLOLOLOLOL XD

      • Androu1

I hope Ken only shows up again in the story mode, in which he suffers a terribly gruesome death.

        • Arcana Wiz

i guess i’m one of the few who didnt hate Ken, i actually leveled him a used a bit to change the atmosphere with always the same party.

  • DesmaX

Hope people don’t use the machine all day with Training Mode

  • Rake

I’m really crossing my fingers for Adachi being playable. Since the Arcade version isn’t the full experience for Story mode, I hope it all changes in the future for the consoles. Adding Adachi and more story to why he’s in the game.

    • Croix Zapp

yea, adachi isn’t a bad guy.

bet many of us can relate to him rather than the main char….

considering the theme of P5, wouldn’t adachi be a fitting main char?
      bounded by society and etc..

      • Rake

Nah, I want P5 to have it’s own brand new MC, with his own flaws and troubles.

  • Natat

Huh? They rebalanced the game? As in, in this patch? I wonder if they emergency nerfed Aigis some like when they took out the Fatal 5B from Chie in the original, it always annoyed me how Aigis only became better and better (or at least not nerfed) in every loketest of P4A2, while every other really good character from P4A got their stupid stuff nerfed.

    • Kelohmello

I imagine the rebalance is just like what they did with the original P4U when it was in arcades, just a quick fixup for any broken things, such as Yukari having a garu glitch that instantly does 100% of the opponent’s life, or Elizabeth being able to make the opponent completely disappear off the screen for the entire round using Randomizer.

      • Natat

Yeah, that does make sense. Aah I wanna see some SHO matches already…

  • Servant BerserCAR

I’m surprised that there is no “FO’ SHO” joke in this comment section.

    • Someone’s bound to fire the first SHO-ot.

      • Guest

Ugh. There are SHO many puns here I can’t stand it.

    • This is SHO to get it started.

    • junir

      SHOrely you can’t be serious?

    • Arcana Wiz

I wonder if we will do a SHOcial link!

  • Bobby Jennings

Man, I thought a new character was announced…

  • Afternoon Intergalactic

A game rebalance already? On point, Atlus/ASW.

    • Triplicity

Just bug fixes in the patch notes and no intentional rebalances; kinda rough. Luckily P4U2 only has Aigis as its No. 1 SS character while BBCP is stuck with Kokonoe still.

  • AnotherTime

I know I’m not the only one that minds it, but I’d really like to see Minato in one of these games some time. There are many mythological figures that died and didn’t come back when they were killed, and that could’ve been his ultimate persona. Instead they gave him Messiah, a savior destined to come back after giving humanity its second chance. Besides, the Dark Hour is making its appearance, so that possibly means the seal has already been broken.

    • Trinity

If Minato comes back, Minako has to, as well. It’s only fair.

      • Arcana Wiz

i dont know why the downvotes, cause i would love to see her too, and her battle style would be very interesting cause she use a naginata.

        • Trinity

I imagine it’s because depending on who you ask, Minako’s not exactly canon. A shame, really, as I prefer HER route to Minato’s (also, I have a Shinji bias)

          • AnotherTime

In my opinion, fair is fair. She’s different enough to be playable, but she hasn’t been counted for anything considering everyone is content to only reference Minato, and Shinjiro is still very much dead. If Minato’s chance is zero, then her chance is less than zero. She would make an awesome addition, however.

          • Trinity

If everyone is only going to reference Minato, then why on earth was Minako created in the first place?

Also, Minako’s route changed Shinji’s fate, if and only if you did everything right. Instead of killing him, he just went into a coma…

But I loved Minako. She’s the entire reason I began playing more Persona. I would never have picked up the game if not for P3P. P3P lead to Persona 4 and then Arena and then the older games…

But yeah, Minako and her fighting style would have been awesome! Oh well.

(also, as an aside, a female version of Persona 4 would be awesome. I would love to call Kanji or Yosuke my love interests)

          • AnotherTime

She was created as an afterthought. P3P came out AFTER Persona 4, so there was no time to make a change. Along with that, Atlus stated there just wasn’t enough of a reason to include a female MC for Persona 4, citing those exact issues. Not enough love to go around for a F!MC, so they just went with a more enhanced story of their male protagonist. As an aside, he had a set name and was already being thrown in to extra media and everything. Female Main Characters that AREN’T Maya just seem to be afterthoughts insofar, but that may change.

          • Trinity

Learn something new everyday. Not enough love to go around for a female MC, but they bothered creating one.

          • AnotherTime

No, I mean in the way of Persona 4. Not enough male love interests were imbedded in to the game to begin with so they decided against adding a female protagonist. Also, as a word from the fans, Yu being male was very integral to the story. His Persona was Izanagi after all while the enemy was Izanami. Messing with that plot would’ve meant an entirely different game on the F!MC’s side, and that costs a lot of money. Money and time Atlus just didn’t have.

          • Trinity

Now that you explained it like that, that makes perfect sense.

…also, still shipping Izanami and Yu. Don’t ask why.
