Dynasty Warriors Meets Zelda In Hyrule Warriors For Wii U, Trailer Inside

By Ishaan . December 18, 2013 . 6:04am

Tecmo Koei and Nintendo are collaborating on a new game called Hyrule Warriors (tentative title). The title was announced during Nintendo Direct this morning.

As the title suggests, it is a Dynasty Warriors-esque title for Wii U, combining the franchise’s concept of battling several enemies on a battlefield with The Legend of Zelda.

The game will be released in 2014 in North America and Europe. Note that this is not the next game in the Zelda franchise, but a separate project altogether.

  • Kornelious

    Huh, i really wasn’t expecting that…Not sure how I should react…

  • Spirit Macardi

    This is pure insanity-fueled madness… AND I F***ING LOVE IT! :D

Way to keep up the unexpected crossovers! This is the exact sort of “why the hell not?” risk taking that you’ll only see from Nintendo.

    • Sergio Briceño

Exactly and I honestly can’t see something bad about Zelda crossing over to other games. Maybe it would be a 50/50 bet with some, but definitely not Zelda. It’s got that magic touch that turns everything it touches into gold, even N64 cartridges.

      • Kaetsu

I was hoping Zelda and Kid Icarus would cross-over but this is equally as awesome.

    • Pdugna

well this isn’t really a risk thing it’s more of ” why the fuck didn’t they do this before?” Zelda is a good game but the combat in most of it turns off some people so putting it into a Musou type style works great.

      • Kumiko Akimoto

The combat is always so simple why would anyone be turned off by it?

        • Pdugna

lock-ons some like Musou Style but will avoid the combat of Zelda and such because of it.

          • Kaetsu

If you look in the trailer it looks like at one point there is some kind of a lock on system when link is fighting the giant goron looking thing that spins into a ball.

          • Spirit Macardi

            It’s a Dodongo x3

        • Sergio Briceño

I think what he meant was that combat was never the focus of Zelda titles. Though it did improve a lot with SS and by the looks (sounds) of it, this crossover is based on it.

          • Kumiko Akimoto

It’s not? What’s the focus of Zelda titles?I’m not being sarcastic I’m serious. I thought the focus was going on adventures and saving the world which plays into the gameplay.

          • Sergio Briceño

You answered yourself. The focus is “going on adventures and saving the world”, it’s not combat.

Aside from the targeting system in OoT and the more realistic sword swinging in SS, the combat has not seen much improvement, even the 3 swings sword combos are exclusive to console titles. WW and TP tried introducing new moves but some have been abandoned in later games.

Every enemy, except for some bosses are vulnerable to sword attacks, so again, there is little depth to combat as the item they are vulnerable to is a explicit one you get in their own dungeon. Actually, the deepest combat gets is a back and forth tennis battle with Gannon.

Everybody loves Zelda, even with it’s simple combat mechanics. The reason I think everyone is also hyped about this new collaboration is of course, it’s focus on combat. Don’t expect to “go on adventures and saving the world” on this one.

          • Kumiko Akimoto

But if it didn’t have decent combat or easy combat there’d be no point to that unless it’s point and click

          • Sergio Briceño

It’s both decent and easy enough like you said.

          • Kumiko Akimoto

Who has a problem with that?

          • Sergio Briceño

Apparently you do, I was praising it and saying you were right… Jesus…

          • Kumiko Akimoto

I mean someone said that people didn’t always like the combat in zelda

          • Sergio Briceño

Sorry, forgot where this conversation started. Upvoting you to make up for my mistaken behaviour.

But I must agree with Pdugna. Some people just don’t see Zelda for what it is, a sum of simple things that make a perfect package. By that definition, potentially anyone could be turned off by anything in Zelda. This collaboration focuses on it’s biggest offence, combat.

The good news is though that to play Zelda you have to get your hands on a Nintendo console and if you own one, chances are you love video games so much you will give the game a chance for at least half an hour and that is more than enough to fall in love with it.

    • Ric Vazquez

      This looks very promising.

  • mikebrand83

Link fighting along side ordinary soldiers? Suddenly the Skyward Sword prequel manga about the “first” Link comes to mind.

    • Devinja

I think he wore a scarf thing in that prequel!

      • mikebrand83

Actually, the prequel manga Link wore a red cape (based on the coloured pages), while this Link in the teaser is wearing a blue scarf (though they look very similar from the front).

Still, this is only the second time I can recall any of the Links wearing something noticeable around his neck, so that probably also why I was reminded of the manga.

        • Thrasher429

Not to mention from the looks of that video he is totally rocking that scarf.

        • Devinja

The scarf itself appears to be important because its in the Japanese logo, but changable hear might be a thing in it.

  • ragingmerifes

    What the fuck.

Seems fun, even though I’m not a fan of neither.

  • zweii

Nice! I hope this finally means Dynasty warrriors/hack&slash type games wont incur so much hate in the future whenever a similar game is announced.

  • zferolie

Is this from the live stream, because I am on the site and nothing is playing. It’s just blank… Are other people seeing it?

    • ZEROthefirst

Just wait for it to finish, and watch the archive for it later. It started late for me, and during the stream it seems like it crashed.

  • d19xx

Sounds cool. Sheik can now be playable.

  • fairysun

    This is awesome.
I am the fan of both series.

But who will be the characters? Green Link, Red Link, Blue Link, Purple Link, and Zelda?
Knowing Koei who can make the Two Qiaos fight, maybe they can force Midna, Hilda, Impa, Goron to fight too.

    • pressstart

Tingle, a Deku scrub, guitar wielding Zora. Wolf Link, Skullkid with Majora’s mask, FIERCE DIETY! They have lots to work with.

      • Lumi

If Fierce Deity Link is in, I’d have a VERY hard time trying to ignore the Wii U.

      • Kaetsu

Playing a Zora would be so badass!

    • Ninastars

I’m all ready to main Darunia. They better put him in.

      • James M Wallace

Oh man, HE would be a force! He’d be slow, but his punches and maybe use of the Megaton Hammer for sweeps and quake attacks would still work!

  • Ooh Bee

Does this mean playable Zelda and other characters? Because that’s something these Warriors games always do well. A crapload of playable characters.

    • Playable Sheik would be so badass.

    • Spirit Macardi

They also typically let you play as people on both sides of the conflict, so Ganon and other villains may be playable as well.

      I’d totally main Vaati.

      • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Imagine going full boar with ganon. Or usinfg Midna? Or going insane With Girahim?

    • John Diamond

      navi confirmed

      • d19xx

Her special is yelling “Hey Listen!” to a crowd making their eardrums explode….

    • Brion Valkerion

I would imagine there is going to be multiple versions of the characters from each game in the franchise TW Link, OoT Link, Zelda, Gannon ect.

    • I want some deep cuts like Ralph and Linebeck

Ooh maybe Veran and Onox as bosses too!?

    • Kari

Hyrule WarriorSSSS ~ thats SSS like plural.Which means more than one warrior thats not Link,

  • Kelohmello

I wanna play as Gannondorf. I hope I can do so.

  • Guest

I’m a big fan of the dynasty warriors game, but getting a Wii U just for this sucks.

    • GH56734

You could settle for that Sonic game, that new 3D Mario game, or possibly in the future Bayonetta 2 to help justify your decision. :P

      • ZEROthefirst

Don’t forget the new Smash Bros and some other good games like X and MK8 for next year.

      • Guest

That is the problem. I only like the 2D sonic games and never liked Mario. I’m probably just sticking to the ps3 and the dynasty warrior: gundam games.

        • James Enk

so if you had a WiiU you wouldn’t get X, the new Zelda, this, Bayonetta 2, SSB, SMT X FE and maybe a couple of 3rd party games?

          • Rick

If I had a Wii U I wouldn’t get the new Zelda, this, Bayonetta 2, SSB, or SMT X FE. Literally the only reason I’m buying a Wii U is for X. And that’s all the reason I need.

          • James Enk

and then through it away:) we all want different things i guess

    • ronin4life

You know, ever since last November this is all people can say.

There must obviously be FAR more than one game per person by now, at least for most people.

  • Woah. That looks neat! ^__^

  • megaten666

Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy :D
    Tecmo KOEI is on fire!
    – “Let’s make Everything Warriors!”
And literally, in one point of every franchises lifetime, they must have to get a Musou treatment.

Now, Bleach Warriors. Make it happen!

    • Thatguy

wasn’t bleach: soul resureccion basicaly Bleach Warriors?

      • megaten666

No. That one made by Racjin. And it was a very… inferior game to any Musou game. I just wish that Namco Bandai or Tecmo KOEI pick up the rights and make a decent game with a decent story mode. Hokuto Musou and Pirate Warriors were amazing. Bleach:SR was playable at best. (I mean, come on… after playing Soul Carnival 2 on PSP, Soul Ignition on PS3 felt like a very rushed, half-finished game)

        • Thatguy

Yeah, maybe Swan Song to Bleach for PS4 (because last arc for bleach will last another 10 years) from Namco and Koei. With all story arc (maybe besides fillers. or with them + unique dream mode)
          I am all over it.

          Sorry for off-topic.

          • megaten666

First, we need the anime to continue. Without an actual anime, there is nearly zero chance for Bleach getting a PS4 iteration. *sigh* Such a pain… the franchise has so many potential to create various type of games and all is wasted. Only a handful of games exists that are worthy of mentioning :(

    • Shirogane Takeru

      Macross Warriors or Atelier Warriors!

  • Wake

O man, I did not see this coming. I’m so hyped for this.

  • Darkbeat

    VERY YES!!

  • KingGunblader

And you thought Pokemon Conquest was the only bizarre Koei crossover that Nintendo had in mind.

    • AndyLC

All I need is Emboar and Zhang Fei to be in the same game

      • Alexander Marquis Starkey

Dat…is awesome…and I don’t like Emboar or Zhang Fei a whole lot…tell me there is more.

  • My jaw dropped so hard that I thought it would crack. Honestly speaking, it sounds like a bad idea, but knowing anime’s such as One Piece and Bleach work well with it and as a Zelda fan, I’m still going to get it and enjoy it.

EDIT: Watched again (using better quality) and changed one thing. It doesn’t look “meh”. It looks awesome.

  • Arcana Wiz

…… and i was thinking that One piece would be the most unusual Koei dinasty game.

  • James Enk

i am very interested in this

  • shadus

Where was this at the VGX? Right when you thought Nintendo was out of bullets they let loose with a vengeance. I know Dynasty Warriors are not always known for their level design, polish or creativity but if the big N is going to let them use Hyrule you can bet that wont be the case with this game.

    • British_Otaku

More proof that if you want news out of Nintendo, wait for a Direct.
Most of the other announcements at VGX were pretty weak too, almost as if they wanted to avoid being attached to that trainwreck of an event.

      • James M Wallace

It was VGX. Would YOU want to be associated in any way with an awful annual event like that?

My friends and I refuse to watch the events; they’re an insult to gamers’ intelligence.

        • Kaetsu

Yeah the’re atrocious and dreadful. I can’t stand watching them.

    • Heisst

NoA can’t have new announcements before NoJ.

  • RagingTiger44

Well, I guess this is one of the few ways Temco-Koei is going to get me to play a Dynasty Warriors game.

  • LunarKnite

This is amazing. Combining two of my favorite franchises like this? It’s Pokemon Conquest all over again. <3

  • Devinja

Nintendo is going so crazy with these spin offs. My heart can’t take this, selling me on stuff I didn’t even think could be possible. Whats next, Metroid sci fi monster hunter game?

    • Spirit Macardi

Just watch, they’re going to team up with Namco next to make Tales of Pikmin.

      • SprintsMcGee

I would be okay with that

      • Kaetsu

Next there going to team up with Atlus for a Shin Megami Tensei and Fire Emblem crossover haha…oh wait.

  • Dark Lord Ash

Confirm the biggoran sword as a weapon nintendo, you know you want to.

  • Michael Cortorreal

*hype’s level’s excel’s critical mass point* HOLY BOLOGNI!
Now that’s a game that looks awesome! Lots of action, hacking and slashing old style.
Just the kinda Zelda i was waiting for…now especulations…
Anyone here to play online co-op? Because i am!

  • TheSoullesOne

Damn wish One Piece got this awesome treatment this still seems kinda true to its core only a bit mixed up which I like

  • Randgriz

Would it be hypocritcal if reviews love this but still hate DW games?

    • malek86

No, because this will probably be made with Nintendo’s supervision, meaning they are less chances of a screw up.

I’m not expecting this to play much like the Musou games, actually.

      • Randgriz

Youre probably right about that, i know i sound negative but itll just be interesting to see if non-musou fans/ game reviewers like this more then the actual DW stuff. There could be some positive rammifactions if it does well.

        • malek86

Maybe, or maybe not. In the end, despite the success of the GC version of Soul Calibur 2, there were no further collaborations between Namco and Nintendo. Soul Calibur 3 was even a PS2 exclusive.

The Warriors series is not very popular in the west, so this will sell on the name alone (and note, I don’t expect them to call it “Hyrule Warriors” for real… they’ll probably insert the word Zelda somewhere in the final title). But when that’s done, I doubt it will have much of an impact on the actual Warriors series.

          • Randgriz

Im hoping theres a good meaty zelda adventure story in this game, unless its a kind of “honouring zelda history” type of game. Both could work very well actually. Get all that Zelda Loot!

    • British_Otaku

Depends on how similar they are mechanically, we know this is going to get points for having familiar monsters, characters and sound effects on top of (probably) more advanced mechanics.

  • Mecha_the_Hedgehog

This idea sounds so stupid and crazy I love it. Zelda could use some spinoff titles on the main console to keep interest while the main game is being made and this looks like an instant winner. I just hope there will be more characters to play as like Midna and Shiek.

  • 하세요

I didn’t ask for this, but I’m sure as hell not going to deny it.

  • AzureRyuujin

    Sorry…. I…can’t resist the awesome!

  • Rayhan PromisedGallery

~still waiting for SE and Koei collaborate to make Final Fantays Musou~

    • Kamen Rider Rayz

This is exactly what I thought!

  • deathman00789

I would rather it play like Sengoku Basara but this is great too!.

  • SirRichard

This was completely out of the left but I love the idea already. I really hope Nintendo keep doing stuff like this, imagine what other silly things they can merge into their franchises.

  • Kaihedgie

    Well consider me sold.

    Hold on hold on

    Does this mean…playable Ganondorf?

  • Thrasher429

This is one of those things that I never would have asked for and especially never would have even thought of as a concept….But now that I know it exists I . NEED. IT.

  • icecoffemix

    “Name not final”

Why not? It’s straight to the point and catchy as heck, let it be final. :P

    • Heisst

It also suggests that there’s more characters, as it should be.

    • British_Otaku

The Japanese title seems to be final (Zelda Musou) and it is typical for the localised Musou games to have the term “Warriors” in them, so I’m curious what they will call it if not Hyrule Warriors, of course, it doesn’t have a distinct logo so they will have to figure that out or make the title “The Legend of Zelda: Hyrule Warriors”.

      • icecoffemix

It’d make pretty shitty game if only Link is available no matter how they market it, so yeah, I hope Nintendo is not THAT dumb. But who knows. :/

  • Daniel Jeanbaptiste

Hyrule Warriors takes place before Skyward Sword. It the battle between Goddess Hylia vs Demon King Demise

    • Oh god, you went there.

  • MrRobbyM

I feel like I was just baptized.

  • DivinePhoenix69

Im a big fan of Koei’s Warrior series and Capcom’s Basara series so the repetitive gameplay doesnt bother me a bit. with this game, X, Bayo 2, and Smash now i need to get a WiiU, hopefully by next year.

With that said it’d be pretty sweet if they add some guest characters from the Warriors series. Seriously if Lu Bu laying the smackdown on Moblins and Lizalfos is actually a thing then this is an automatic day one buy.

  • NeptuniasBeard

Never really played this type of game, but like grandma always said: “If you’re going to jump into a new genre of game, it may as well be a Nintendo version of it, because why the hell not”

  • PreyMantis

Oh, sheets of paper! Never expected this one, and it looks awesome!

  • Link

Now just give me an epic Majora battle.

  • Lumi

That’s unexpected. Guess the character selection will be Link, Zelda, Sheik, Midna, Goddesses?, Link, Link, Link, Hilda, Ravio, Link, Zelda, Ganon, Ganondorf, Ganondorf, and Link?

    • Final Aura

You forgot Fierce Diety Link toon Link cdi Link excuuuuse me princess Link …. and tingle :P

      • zferolie

I would love Excuuuuuuuuuuuuuse me Princess link

      • Lumi

Ah, and Tingle. A musou game’s got to have a lethal joke character in there, but in this case the lethality is probably on the player’s sanity.

    • zferolie

All of these and more please

  • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

I never really liked Zelda game(Just ever played Four Swords but never really liked that one too.T_T) but a huge fan of Musou game. Hoped that this one will be able to make me like Zelda series.^_^

    • J_Joestar

same, i’ve never finished a Zelda game, but i always like a lot of the themed Musou games.

    • crocodileman94

I think that’s one of the reasons to why this game exists. In Japan, Musou is bigger than Zelda. So by doing this, they might get some of those fans to play Zelda. Vice versa here in west.

  • Kango234

  • ElAbuelo69

Bah you win Nintendo…I’ll get the Wii U when you release this game…

  • wahyudil

OMG, I dream this kind zelda game …. and now its happen

    S O L D ! ! !

Please let there be a playable toon Link <3

  • Akimitsu

If Nintendo is smart, they’d have a lot of playable characters, akin to Dynasty Warriors and their brothers. Something like Ganondorf, Zelda, Shiek, a Goron (even if it’s Goron Link from MM), etc. Hopefully they let Omega Force develop it, since they know what they’re doing.

  • KoRLumen

Holy shiz, Link is sexy in that scarf.

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

I need new pants ……… Next I want a Ninja Gaiden type of Zelda game….<3

    • AuraGuyChris

You get The Legend of Zelda: Elda Z.

  • Prinnydoom

    So I need a wii u like….right now.

  • s07195

The thing I’m excited for is playing as a Link with a badass scarf. 0_0
How come no other Link ever thought of this?

  • koksuckaahh

If my baby midna is in this, day 1 buy i tell you hwat.

  • Astromime

I sure hope this will go in the Zelda timeline somewhere.

    • J_Joestar

      pretty sure it won’t,
Would be interesting to have an original story campaign like in the Gundam Musou games where they are all tossed into a single world from various timelines.

  • Fox

Man, these musou spin-off games are even more hit-or-miss than the main-line.

Hopefully they’ll have weapons separate from characters so we’re not forced to endure stupid movesets to play with characters we like, and/or have alternate costumes that reflect the different art styles used in the games. I would love to be able to swap in Toon Link or Tetra around with Skyward Link or TP’s badass Zelda.

  • Slayven19

Playable zelda lets go!! These games also usually have online now so that’s another plus.

  • leingod

As someone said before, this could really be hit or miss. These games are repetitive and can get boring pretty fast, unless the cast’s strong and numerous, as with Dynasty titles.

  • Anthony Birken

I’m loving this already, and it may be unrealistic but if they threw in that brawl smash somewhere I’d scream like a little girl upon purchase~

  • DanielGearSolid

You go to N4G, and somehow ppl have already reviewed the game (negative ofcourse -_-) b4 even touching it…

You go to Siliconera they actually wanna wait and see how it turns out… (I know, its crazy!)

    You stop going to N4G

    • Leon_Tekashi

You go on Gematsu, you see people thinking that this is the new Zelda Wii U we have been waiting for. *Sigh*

    • J_Joestar

well to be fair, Dynasty Warriors gameplay isn’t normally reviewed favorably in NA anyways so a lot of people kinda know what to expect from them.

      • Zak Ledward

Because NA screams about how the game hasn’t changed since the first game, and then they all run over to their “new” copy of Call of Duty, that has a “new” horde mode.

    • $1392518

Jesus. Reviewing a game based on the stolen alpha is stupid, but based on the first announcement? I-I should have expected this…

  • Looks pretty neat. Can’t wait for more info.

  • Muffum

it’s happening! and the happening is intensifing!!
I for one that only cared and played Twilight Princess. i’m really interested in this one.

  • Pichi

Wonder about the roster. Will there be one character for each weapon or is this going to be more about the weapons Link uses in the place of using another character?

  • ivanchu77

woah, fitting but still very unexpected to see a Zelda in this genre :0

Musous games had usually tons of playable characters, and Zelda is not a franchise with many “relevant” characters, so kinda curious to see what type of roster they put in the game, i would love to see a playable Midna to be honest xD

    • J_Joestar

Well they could always do a timeline-type thing like they did in Gundam, just that in this case it would have different instances of Link, Zelda, and Ganon/dorf through out the historia. As well as any other characters that may have had different incarnations.

Maybe have a timeline campaign mode that glosses over the stories of various games, then a fantasy campaign mode that warps everyone into the same era?

  • God

Godamnit now i have to buy a Wii U!

  • celery

    Today is a good day.

  • Earthjolly

At least it wasn’t Mushroom Warriors

  • Yan Zhao

This is….the hypest news article I have seen all year! I need this! Time to buy a Wii U!

  • XypherCode

I think Link here is the Link from the prequel Manga of Skyward Sword from the Hyrule Historia.

  • ztype

Looks pretty damn sweet, used to love the DW games. Hoping it has a little more depth, like a meaning to all that smashing!

  • Ixbran

  • mike dickson

*slams head on desk* WHY WHY WHY ! WHY DIDN’T I BUY A WIIU

    • Juan Manuel M. Suárez

It’s not like they are sold out and you can’t find them anywhere anytime soon~.

      • mike dickson

i khow but now i have to save up for one including i have too live through february

  • Kornelious

…..There are no word to describe the PURE EPICNESS I have just experienced!

  • Kaetsu

I can’t wait to run around Hyrule Fields in HD!

  • John Lawson

The only issue with this game will probably be playable characters, I can think of 12 solid playable characters, plus possible other link incarnations (hope not), other than that this game looks fantastic, this could be another system seller, and I really dig the new Link design, it mirrors Adol from Ys with the scarf

    • J_Joestar

Well even Hokuto Musou only had about 9-10 characters. Maybe it may mean fleshing out each character more?

  • Bacon_n_Lettuce

This is why I love the modern state of the video game industry: completely random announcements like this out of left field. I’m honestly still not sure what to think.

    • Ixbran

I just hope Links transformations from MM get in. Deku Link, Zora Link, Goron Link, and Fierce Deity Link.

they dont have to be transformations, i’d be fine with them getting in as their own individual characters. That game needs more love, and those different incarnations of him would add diversity too the cast of this game.

  • chroma816

I’m not sure I’m totally interested yet, but it looks like it could be fun.

  • David García Abril

    My reaction:

Sorry, but no! THIS SERIES IS F***** TERRIBLE!

I’ve tried to enter it several times (two “Dinasty” and two “Samurai”), including an imitator (a Naruto game for PSP. Forgot its name).

Every single time it felt repetitive, boring and, ultimately, lame as hell! Seriously, I’m baffled that this game has such a huge following, either in Japan or anywhere else!

And now seeing my favorite franchise of all time tied to this [CENSORED]…

God, this really ruined my day… >_<

It’s not like this game will ruin other Zelda games or anything. Besides, not everything has to cater to your tastes or anything. Lots of people like the musou series, even if you don’t.

      • J_Joestar

It could even build interest in Zelda games for people in the Musou crowd!.

        • Good point.

So will this be The Great Hylian War? Hope we get to play as Zelda

  • MasterScrub

Nintendo sure seems to have a thing for weird crossovers that nobody knew they wanted.

…I want this game so bad can it be 2014 now pls
