By Spencer . December 20, 2013 . 2:48am

imageOverflow, the visual novel developer behind School Days and more recently Shiny Days, has a new game in the works. On Twitter, the Overflow team announced Island Days is in development for Nintendo 3DS and slated for release in spring 2014.

Island Days will be developed by Klon, a new developer currently making Karous Re: Beast of Eden.

  • Kumiko Akimoto

I thought they went out of business?

    • JonathanisPrimus

I guess they were saved by selling off their nice boats.

    • Nope, they only stopped making games by themselves.

  • raitouniverse

Island Days, huh. VN based on people shipwrecked on an island perhaps?

    • ChiffonCake

I guess the boat wasn’t that nice after all.

      (I’m very sorry)

  • icecoffemix

    3DS really?

Not dissing 3DS but “Days” game is the last thing I expect on it. :o

    • British_Otaku

Days has been on the most mainstream systems in Japan before like the PS2 and PSP and censored relative to the PC release. What is different here?

      • icecoffemix

        Didn’t know that.

      • Hound

        If we ignore icecoffeemix’s response:

The difference would be the console base. Most censored visual novels would be expected on the Vita, PC, 360/PS3, or perhaps iOS. While touch-based games of a lewd nature do exist on the 3DS/DS, visual novels strictly for the system are unusual.

        • DyLaN

PS3 do get cleaned up eroge port too.

        • Yause

          It’s rare but not unprecedented.

Kadokawa Shoten released Really? Really! (Navel) on the DS, presumably to capitalize on Ace Attorney popularity.

IIRC, some Pia Carrot (F&C) spin-offs were released on the Gameboy platforms too.

  • fyi1191

    Time to upgrade! Nice Ship.

  • D-Omen

Boats are too obvious with an island setting. We need a Nice Chopper next or some such thing.

    • GH56734

A fitting evolution to the formula

  • PreyMantis

One thing’s for sure: they get free abortion on the island like in School Days.

  • Anesia Hunter

I just had flash backs of the school days bad endings. ._. think we’ll get anything as bad as those in island days?

    • British_Otaku

Maybe not in the 3DS version, I expect a PC version of this to have all of it though not that I know it is coming 100%.

    • GH56734

Neither Sony nor Nintendo would allow content that extreme on their consoles… Only Sega back in the Saturn days was desperate enough to allow (semi-)adult games to be licensed (case in point: a certain creepy minigame collection with little innocent girls doing suggestive moves… was too scared to read more about it).

      • British_Otaku

Give me more information on this Saturn game, at least the name of the game…

It sounds like the game isn’t “adult” in the same fashion that visual novels on the PC tend to be, but if it is something that Sony and Nintendo were never desperate enough I’m curious.. :P

        • GH56734

Yakyuu Ken Special, aka the ecchi jankenpon game. Avoid it at all costs. It’s live-action, and somehow worse than you might imagine. Worse than Night Trap at any rate. Definitely NSFW and possibly bordering on lolicon. It’s appaling in all aspects.

Another more well known example illustrating how lenient they got at the time would be the Phantasmagoria Saturn JP-only port. And another game by Ito where the package had condoms enclosed.

    • megaten666

You talk about the gore or… something else *winking intesifies*
I think the gore maybe still there. Or not, since this is a Nintendo console.

I just want my Kotonoha dope already :D
Also, do you remember the birth scene from the anime?

      • Lynx

Nintendo has had M rated games on their systems before that were gore heavy. Hell, they let this zombie game for the DS game go through that was M and was pretty gore filled.

        • megaten666

Didn’t know. Don’t have a Nintendo console, but good to hear stuff like that actually makes an appearance there as well. I hope they won’t water down the features that makes School Days games unique (I mean, even without ecchi, it is pretty unique, I think.)

      • GH56734

        Probably the “something else”.
Not the nudity (sometimes associated there with purity), but the actual sex… there’s a big difference.
Erotic games have been always restricted to computers in Japan, and Nintendo/Sony would black-list any publisher known to be involved in such activities (with the exception of one publisher they allowed ro publish a single GBC mahjong game in 2001 and nothing else, which was quite the event back then).
Enix doesn’t count, they have dropped their “shady” productions long ago by the time they produced their hits -the Portopia VN and Dragon Quest-

      • Anesia Hunter

I meant the gore not the hentai.

      • Nintendo hasn’t censored third-party content on their systems since the SNES days.

        • GH56734

But they did refuse to allow some games from being published on their consoles. Eroge publishers were denied release of their products, repeatedly. Bear in mind, not only Nintendo, but Sony also.

A certain G-cup from Bravely Default would like to say hello also :p

          • Not allowing pornographic or adults-only content on their systems, which has been an industry-wide standard for console manufacturers for decades, isn’t really comparable to enforcing blanket content restrictions on all third-party software to appease some imagined “family-friendly” norm, which was particular to Nintendo during the 90s.

          • Zero_Destiny

But Nintendo themselves were the publishers of Bravely Default, that’s not really a fair comparison.

        • persona_yuji

Wasn’t Fire Emblem: Awakening censored on a certain image of butt-cheeks that, ironically, made it even more suggestive than what it originally was?

          • Fire Emblem wasn’t a third-party game. That was Nintendo’s call on their own game.

    • Juan Andrés Valencia

The PS2 version of School Days replaced the sex scenes with more gore so I wouldn’t be shocked if that happened.

      • megaten666

What? I need to check this (*_*)

      • GH56734

I thought there was a scene of a certain someone’s head asploding like a watermelon, in bullet time, that was cut in the PS2 version. And the PS3 version doesn’t let you see (besides an arm) the aftermath of the train ending?
I could have sworn that they censored sex AND gore in the console versions, but I may be wrong :P

  • British_Otaku

Looking forward to this, School Days had a pretty unique VN and the anime adaptation was perfect. :P

  • GH56734

    “Nice Boat”

  • ZekeFreek

Never bothered any of the days spin-offs. Played the main game and was good enough for me.

  • Well then. It’s nice to see that Overflow still has “a head” in the game =P

  • Shizumasa

    Is Makoto not dead yet?

    • GH56734

Depending on the ending (the anime went with a mesh-up inspired from lots of bad endings).

  • DyLaN

……… 3DS is the last thing I had in mind for a School Days spin off lol. No H-scenes for sure then. Will it have the island equivalent of nice boats? :P

Say, did the SD spin offs made it across the ocean?

    • Silver Citizen

Shiny Days was licensed by JastUSA and it should be out sometime next year.

  • Guest

Looks like the family tree is going to grow even more :P
*Beware the spoilers for other 0verflow games*

    • Anesia Hunter

leave the family trees to Da Capo series.

  • James Reilly

I’m gonna shoot for the bad end to see how overly violent it is lol

    • GH56734

I doubt it would involve the shinkansen bullet train since this is an island, or a tiger that comes from panties drawers since it’s out of place in a tropical island (but you never know), but… “forced abortions/vivisections” and/or suicides are still an option.
      Maybe a volcano? :P

  • Juan Andrés Valencia

So I should expect a VN with extremely unlikeable characters that end up killing each other for the sake of our sanity in 3D? Count me in and out.

  • MrSirFeatherFang

Oh man, this is like… the best news evar :D

  • Raltrios

Argh…I am ashamed to admit I only lasted through six episodes before I dropped this like a rock…
    Makoto, you fuck.

    • British_Otaku

If you don’t like Makoto, go through the remaining episodes, the story ends well. >_>

  • Eder García

i thought Nintendo don’t allows visual novel games anymore on their consoles

    • British_Otaku

Since when? Ace Attorney 5 just released. Fire Emblem is basically a dating sim now. And Virtue’s Last Reward is the 3DS/Vita sequel to a DS classic.
