Capcom Are Already Working On A New Ace Attorney Game

By Sato . December 29, 2013 . 9:30am

Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies came out just a couple months ago, and it looks like Capcom are already getting ready for the next installment in the series. 4Gamer recently spoke with a bunch of Japanese game developers on what to expect next year, and two key Capcom developers had a few words to share on the future of the series.

“This year, we were able to deliver Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies to you all, and it brings me a great sigh of relief,” says director Takeshi Yamazaki. “Today, we’re working at full force on the next title. We’ve only just begun, but we’re currently thinking about all kinds of interesting ideas, so please look forward to it! Have a happy new year, you guys!”

Meanwhile, Shu Takumi is known as the original creator of the Ace Attorney series, but the last time he worked on the franchise was for Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney. It looks like we’ll be hearing more from him next year, as he reveals that he’s currently working on a new title (not necessarily Ace Attorney-related).

“This year, I’ve poured all my energy in the preparation, writing, and production of a brand new project,” says Takumi.

“Even today, it’s an ongoing process and I’m almost at the limits of my mental capacity. This time of year, I keep to myself, and I don’t get to see much of the outside world, but honestly, I can’t say I’ve seen much else aside from work for the most part…”

“Anyway, next year [the game] will be taking the shape of a title, and we’ll be announcing it, so when the time comes, thank you for your support!”

were the winners of the terraria contest announced already

  • MasterScrub

Glad to see AA did well enough to get another game! (maybe we’ll get a physical release next time cough cough)

    • AuraGuyChris

      Maybe Dual Destinies is actually…

…part of another trilogy for the 3DS.

    • Rob Wu

It always does well enough to get a new game, the concern is always if we’ll be getting the localisation.

  • Wake

I’m so happy this series got a chance to shine. I’ve been critical with Capcom’s not so popular decisions, but they’ve really done right for this series.

  • jugss

physical release please!!!!! digital ones are expensive in my country.

  • ParrotProphet

Hopefully this time they make this entry at least half-way interesting, let alone good. I really did not like Dual Destinies as a game, let alone as an entry in my favorite series ever created.

  • D-Omen

My body is ready for more Yamazaki and Takumi goodness.

  • OneOkami

I’m looking forward to whatever Shu Takumi is heavily involved in. I believed he had sheer raw talent as a game designer from playing the original 3 Ace Attorney games which is why I anticipated and wasn’t surprised in the slightest that I enjoyed Ghost Trick so much.

    • TheRealMalek

Another “one shot” title like ghost trick would be cool.

    • Areuto

Ghost trick 2: how the red head learns she’ll need more lives than a cat.

      • Funny you mention cats… ;P
Also, +1 for Ghost Trick; that game is spectacular.

  • Strain42

Good. This is news I like to hear. I need more Ace Attorney in my life.

  • $61526767

After completing Dual Destinies, I can’t wait to see the next entry. Didn’t buy/download the new case though.

    • TheRealMalek

It’s the best case of the whole game (imho) mainly because of a more “fun” tone

      • $61526767

I’ve seen the DLC case and it was too funny. I couldn’t stop laughing.

  • Kenny Loh

Go Capcom, don’t let your guard down even i prefer danganronpa more lol

  • FitzpatrickPhillips

    Don’t rush it guys

  • SMT

While I loved Dual Destinies quite a bit and have belief in the writers (and from what I hear, Investigations 2 was amazing and almost tied with T&T for being consistently good, so they have cred), I really hope Shu Takumi has some involvement in the next game… DD did a good job in making Apollo likeable and fleshed out some of his personality, but (understandably) it froze up his character development in respect for Takumi’s absence. He’s gonna need SOMETHING, and Trucy needs to actually have some presence…

  • Audie Bakerson

Hopefully Wright and company will FINALLY defend someone for something other than murder (and it won’t be a cover for murder)

  • Kaihedgie

    That was fast

  • Machineguntommy

Here’s hoping it makes it’s way stateside. I know everything save for Miles Edgeworth 2 made it here, but ever since AA 3, the releases have always been in question for localization.

  • Guest

Whatever Shu Takumi is involved is going to be great! Can’t wait!

  • Ethan_Twain

Wow, is Shu Takumi getting to make yet another new IP? Didn’t Ghost Trick kinda bomb?

I’m not complaining mind, I freaking love Ghost Trick. Shu Takumi is honest to god top tier talent and when he gets to work out a whole new product I will always be first in line to experience it. But normally when a creative does his own thing and it bombs, the company reigns him back in. Kojima does more Metal Gear Solid after Boktai, Takumi goes back to Ace Attorney (the Layton crossover) after Ghost Trick.

If this is actually a whole new product in the works, then I’m excited both for the creator getting to do his own thing, and the company that’s allowing the creator another shot.

      I thought he…

      ………………………died of poisoning?

      • Ethan_Twain

Negative. The poisoning is what put him in a coma for seven years and turned his hair white and destroyed his vision. By the beginning of AA 3 he’s no longer getting new symptoms.

He does go to prison for murder though, so there’s that.

        • He didn’t die… just pop in T&T in your DS or 3DS and push start ^ ^

        • WingsOfEternity

Furthermore, AAI2 shows that convicted murderers are not always executed… and gets pretty light sentences too if it isn’t premeditated.

  • HershelLousyton
  • Learii

better not be on iOS -_-

  • Bring Gyakuten Kenji 2 3DS eshop in english, please?

  • Yan Zhao

Im guessing Dual Destinies must’ve sold well to warrant a sequel instantly. This is good news indeed. Hopefully Capcom will stop with the damn excuses now and actually localize all these games to the west too, in physical form.

  • AuraGuyChris

    Life is good!

(As long as it stays away from making a new AA on a smartphone.)

  • I’m going to be honest here, Ace Attorney feels a bit weird without Shu writing it. Dual Destinies was fun, lots of fun, great even but…it did feel different. Certain decisions made for the plot…strongly contradict Apollo Justice in tone and it lacked a “theme”. And before anyone goes “Dark Age of the Law” that was kinda…er…well it didn’t quite play out the way it would have in a Takumi game. In some sense it was a bit of a let down after the craziness of the original trilogy, as well as how dark it got in Apollo Justice.

    • Vanilla

Totally why I’m stuck in between want and don’t want–Dual Destinies had some awesome moments, but it definitely lacks the substance of a try Takumi Shu game. I got the feeling that DD was more of an officially-recognized fanfiction, rather than a true successor to the original titles.

      • Heheh, you know why you can say “fan fiction”, it’s because oh uh spoilers here so please look away if you haven’t enjoyed AA:DD!

Phoenix got his badge back. Seriously, notice Phoenix’s lines when he sounds like a Boss are exactly like he sounds in Apollo Justice but when he’s not in “Boss mode” he sounds like a throw-back to the original trilogy? So much fan service. It was like “Please forgive us for our radical departure by switching to Apollo! Oh and here’s Edgeworth too, please understand!” Thankfully Gavin was around at least. Actually I will say, Athena does feel canon. Like it does feel like she was supposed to come and be assisting Apollo but soon as Phoenix steps in, it feels out of canon. Don’t even get me started on the lack of Jury system xD He didn’t need the badge back, he was supposed to be pushing for a nation wide change to the judicial system to really end the Dark Age of the law. There’s no way it ends with the same system in place. They’ll just be smarter with evidence forgery next time or something.

  • Ryo-kun

I haven’t even played the fifth one and now they’re already working on a sixth game? And even a new title, to boot. I hope everything will be localized because I love every game that this guy has made (Ghost Trick FTW)

  • foopy

I, too, hope that Takumi’s involved with the next Ace Attorney. Dual destinies was good, but Takumi’s absence was obvious.

I’ll buy the next AA and whatever Takumi’s working on regardless if they’re the same thing, though. I hope I get some physical goods this time.

  • I do hope we get to see more of Phoenix Wright himself! But before that, please bring Professor Layton vs Phoenix Wright to the West already!

  • Uso Ewin

I just want to see Fulbright’s handsome face, if you know what I mean.

  • Göran Isacson

Even if this next game Shu Takumi is involved with won’t be Ace Attourney, I’m still all in for it. The man’s writing is stellar, (or, well, the writing that then gets localized is stellar), so I’m looking forward to whatever it may be.

That said, if it IS a new Ace Attourney game I will need new pants. Several of them.

  • otakumike

Hopefully we get to see some Dick again…
    Dick Gumshoe was missed. :p
