Level-5 Looking Forward To Surprising Fans With A New Title

By Sato . January 6, 2014 . 5:30pm

2013 was a big year for Level-5, as the publisher introduced brand new games like Youkai Watch and Wonderflick, along with a major update to their immensely successful Fantasy Life. A couple key Level-5 developers recently talked to 4Gamer and shared a few thoughts on the year ahead.

“In 2013, we released Fantasy Life Link!, which corresponded to our ‘connecting’ network theme,” director Atsushi Sugano tells 4Gamer. “That was our answer to those from our development staff and players who voiced ‘I want to play more,’ and I’m grateful we were able to meet those expectations.”

“Again, while I can’t say more, there’s one more approach through which we’re currently challenging ourselves,” continues Sugano. “I believe that ‘even if we go against predictions, expectations must be met’ when it comes to creativity.”

“We’re all currently working at our best to prepare something, so please wait just a little longer,” he concludes.

Next, 4Gamer asks Level-5 CEO Akihiro Hino to share a message going into 2014, for the readers. Hino says he’d like to think of new ideas for 2014, and that a new game is required to help move the industry along.

“In the midst of a rather sluggish consumer game industry at the moment, I believe that the industry needs a ‘new game’,” says Hino. “We’ll try our best to make a new title that’ll surprise all of you, so please look forward to that.” [Note: "Consumer game" is the term used to indicate retail handheld and console titles.]

Earlier in the year, Hino said to Famitsu magazine that the two kinds of projects he has in mind for the future are cross-media projects for kids like Youkai Watch and games that cater to a wider audience, such as Fantasy Life and Wonder Flick. Something he’s particularly interested in, he revealed, is trying his hand at a game involving humour.

I guess Dark Cloud 3 is but the dream of a madman now….

    • Tiduas

Even though I really support the idea of new IP’s I can’t help but feel that Dark Cloud 3 would be a fantastic contribution to that “sluggish” game industry that mr. Akihiro Hino talks about.

      • http://www.siliconera.com/ Ishaan

Personally, I disagree. Hino is talking about sluggish sales, and when he says “new title,” he means a new kind of game that will help reinvigorate the market. A niche RPG isn’t going to do that.

        • Tiduas

Well you’re definitely having a point. I didn’t really put that much thought into what I wrote, I guess I just let loose my fingers to write whatever they wanted and they wanted to play Dark Cloud 3. No matter what Akihiro have in tought I sure look forward to it anyway ^^

Go ask Sony. Honestly, it’s been so long that I doubt most of DC2′s staff are even at Level-5 anymore.

      • Solomon_Kano

        This.

      • Zind Keeper

What really? That could explain why Dark Cloud 3 won’t ever seem to be a reality, maybe.

  • Kaetsu

Level-5 always gets me excited! Well until it takes a while for what they announce to get localized but otherwise lots of great and creative games come out of this studio.

  • Learii

I love level-5 games but they don’t localized their games that much

  • Guest

Good to see it’ll be a “consumer game”!
    Probably for 3DS then!

  • Rintarou

I love you Level 5, but please bring us Fantasy Life if it is so “immensely successful”. :(

  • Junko Enoshima

How about this: LOCALIZE your successful games for other countries to enjoy. Yeah, that would be nice…

    • bananaking123

agreed. but it seems level5 doesn’t like other countries enjoying their games

      • Namuro

A lot of times, I see Japanese games that really try to sell in the western market, but get shunned and hated. But then there are a lot of games that aims to sell locally, never meant for the foreign audience, but are sought after like mad.

I can’t help but think that maybe the best way to sell games is just to keep holding onto it, and let the consumers “beg” for the game to be released.

But if that was the real case, we would have games like Ryū ga Gotoku Kenzan! by now…

        • TheBlackRabbit

or just establish true communication between consumer an dev.

    • fairysun

“Yeah, we tried that before. White Knight Chronicles everyone?”

    • katamari damacy

Level 5 has so many japanese exclusives that it’s mind boggling. Why would they be so hell bent on never translating them? They even had to get their leg pulled for months to even think about localizing Ni no Kuni. they took a massive gamble with Professor Layton here and it paid off, so why not do the same with Fantasy Life?

  • ShinTekk

Just like everyone else, I beg for a localization, but I can understand them not localizing games to other countries when there is a risk in losing money.. BUT, I really want Youkai Watch! My inner 10 year self is just screaming for it!

    • http://www.shonengamez.com/ GameEmpireHD (Kaitou)

Youkai Watch screams Ni No Kuni all over it. (a good thing)

  • Devinja

Inazuma Eleven not only was renewed trademark, but the Nintendo US website lists INAZUMA ELEVEN as a Q1 2014 3DS game.

  • JonathanisPrimus

Hino should make a game about Level-5′s handling of the Danball Senki franchise. I hear that’s a great laugh.

  • Zind Keeper

No Dark Cloud 3 here, moving on.

  • neocatzon

Please surprise us gaijins too. Already enjoyed Ni no Kuni and Layton series..

  • Solomon_Kano

It’s L5, so my interest is there already, but I wonder what platform we’ll see this title on. Been a while since Ni no Kuni, so I’d be interested in seeing a new console game from them.

  • RoyalR R.M

Dark cloud 3 or Rouge Galaxy 2 please.
If not, A new IP similar to those two, but combine ideas.

  • Lemski07

    wheres the engrish release!?

  • Warboss Aohd

personally i’d like to see Dark Cloud 3……….but what would ALSO be great, is them Reviving Ushiro for the Vita (it was a canceled Horror JRPG for the PSP, that asks the question “What is the worth of human life?”)

  • Terraforce77

All I’m asking for is some new Inazuma Eleven and LOCALIZATION.

  • Yan Zhao

Still waiting for Layton vs Ace Attorney guys.

  • http://blog.ceddychen.com/ ctk974

Can’t wait to see more info! Level 5 usually makes great games.

Meanwhile, Wonderflick is still down for maintenance…

  • Margaret Chan

I’m waiting to hear about what version of Inazuma Eleven 3DS is being released Q1 2014 as per NoA’s site.

Is it a port of the 1st game from the compilation? The compilation which is six games? Or GO (but WHY would you EVER do that??)?

if it’s a port I’ll have reservations over whether or not it has the names from the EU/ Singaporean English dub. If it’s the compilation I will buy it by preorder as soon as i hear about it or day of if it’s digital only..

Wish they’d release Fantasy Life in NA in the same way Capcom released MOnster Hunter 3, Wii U and 3ds interaction :3

  • Phoenix_Apollo

I wish it’d be Overblood 3. Man, announcing that would screw with everyone’s expectations. If only Hino embraced that part of him again…

No Dark Cloud 3 here, moving on.
