Senran Kagura 2: Deep Crimson Looks To Be A Big Jump In Quality

By Ishaan . January 7, 2014 . 10:27pm

Earlier this evening, Marvelous AQL held a livestream event where they showed off the first gameplay footage from Senran Kagura 2: Deep Crimson for the Nintendo 3DS, and judging by the footage (recorded by Nintendo Everything), the game looks to have taken quite the leap in quality above Senran Kagura Burst.

As previously reported, Senran Kagura 2: Deep Crimson will feature two new playable characters, named Naraku and Kagura. Additionally, one of the male characters from the previous games will be made playable as well.

Marvelous AQL have also added co-op and tag-team modes to the game, as well as tag-team attacks. Presumably, Senran Kagura 2 has a larger budget than Senran Kagura Burst did, as the in-game footage looks much smoother than before.

Senran Kagura 2: Deep Crimson is scheduled for release on August 7th. A limited edition pack, dubbed the “Nyuu Nyuu DX Pack,” will be available at launch. It will include five mini-figurines of the ninjas from the Homura Crimson Squad and a drama CD. First-print copies will also include the game’s entire soundtrack.

    Can’t wait for! Loving BURST!!!

  • TheExile285

Looks so good, I can’t wait to see the other characters like Hikage and Yomi in action. Also, I like Homuras new Shinovi outfit. I found her SKB one to be disappointing.

    • Freakmasta

Her SKB outfit was just gauntlets. I was like…that’s it?!

  • Zonic505

Considering Burst did well & they’re teasing Shinovi Versus, hopefully Xseed will bring this (& Dekamori) to the US. This looks like a great improvement over Burst, especially the framerate.

    • TheExile285

I’m sure XSEED will bring SK2 and most likely SV westside. Not sure about Dekamori.

  • tubers

Not sure what to think about it.

I thought the perspective with SKB was pretty good, now it looks like a constrained SKV with faux 3D due to shifting cameras.

    • Destiny13777

I think they wanted it to still play and look like the original but make it different enough so it’s not the same game again. I think it looks great, I’m glad they could do a lot more with a bigger budget.

      • tubers

Just saw the “boss fight” and it seems full 3D.

Wonder if the trend will continue and the succeeding game becoming full 3D.

Wonder if they’ll make a hunting-/jarpg later on.

        • TheExile285

          I want a 3D fighter……

    • British_Otaku

Some will say it looks like SV and a lot of livestream comments did, but it seems to work off the same concept of SKB (2D plane with some limited 3D movement) but actually let us work with the environment a lot more.

It was silly not having some sort of lock on indicator before anyway, the game just locked on to one person out of a dozen when you knock em into the air.

      • tubers

        That makes sense.

  • cj may

to bad the actual video quality is bad :/ looks good though!

  • Saw this on the live stream a little while ago and wanted to look at it again. It’s nice that Siliconera was so quick to report on this =)

I like the gameplay style of this very much. The change just adds a nice spice to the game. The graphics also improved a lot too. Especially in certain areas…….. lol =P

  • British_Otaku

Let’s tick a few of the boxes I talked about before:

Great focus on exploration and platforming? Not confirmed, probably harder to pull off with the new perspective.

More stable gameplay? Heck yes, lock on and the ability to face up and down changes so much about the experience.

Interesting and various environments? Platforming and uneven terrain would have helped but it is only one setting to judge off and they haven’t forgotten their old filter thing. :P

More H transformations? Yes and with more natural clothes damage (though I want camera control) sequences.

Boss fights don’t feel hollow or dry? Too early to call when there are so many factors (health balance, unnecessary minions in fights, leveling breaking the experience), but the 3D angle means bigger bosses will be more interesting from the get go.

Basically still little has been confirmed, but the little we know is reason enough to be excited.

  • TheGioG

Aw man, none of the Shinovi Versus gals? Take my sads right now folks…
But I won’t lie, the jump in quality is enough to get me hyped all over again.

    • Shippoyasha

I hope we get the Versus girls and even some New Wave girls in the Versus followup game they couldn’t show yet.

      • Yes, the New Wave girls. <3

        New ones are coming.

    • Ticktockman

Wait, who said that? Couldn’t it be the two new characters will be added to the complete cast of shinovi?

    • Niitris

I bet they’ll be DLC… not that I’m complaining or anything.

  • Weeb

    Time to pre-order.

  • MoriyaMug

Camera placement is awful. Worse than the 3D Ninja Gaiden games ever approached. Hope they adjust that.

  • It’s definitely looking better, but I do hope they pull back the camera a little bit. Right now it looks like things are rather constrained.

But hey, this means they do have a bigger budget, and bigger budgets is a good thing.

  • HellMuT

    Needs more flat.

  • kylehyde

It looks amazing, but I think that the camera needs a little more of work, but overall I’m more than excited for this sequel

  • Leon_Tekashi

Mmm…A little more touch up here and there and then this game will look amazing. =) Get psyched!

  • 하세요

I like the new approach, but the camera seems really, really zoomed in. It makes things more dynamic but I can foresee frustration of enemies constantly ending up behind me and I simply cannot find them, like something out of Loony Toons.

    • tubers

Then I just hope enemies are programmed to be less aggressive if they’re not in view.

  • Kayriss Wins

Wow this is a MAJOR step up from Burst, I really hope we get ALL the Senran Kagura titles over here in the states.

  • Suicunesol

    Wow I’m excited!

I said in the other topic that I wanted Senran Kagura to explore other genres, mainly because I wasn’t sure how the main series could improve upon repetitive side-scrolling gameplay. I am so glad I was proven wrong!

It’s really interesting to me how an improvement in animation, character models, a minor change in camera angle made the game just look so much better even if Asuka has pretty much the same animations so far. I see that some people here don’t seem to like the way the camera works. I, however, love how it works because it stays true to its side-scrolling roots while making it look more compelling. You can freely and easily move between axes, switch between characters very easily, and the perspective is closer so you can see more action up close.

I think what I liked the most, though, was how when your character’s clothing gets torn, the camera zooms in on the action–WITHOUT moving to a separate instance–and sloooooooows down Matrix-style while her breasts bounce emphatically. That’s just… just… just… cool.

My only fear now is that the game won’t be in stereoscopic 3D to improve framerates and such. Yeah, it’s a big deal to me. I hope Takaki delivers 3D once more.

  • hng qtr

For a 3DS game it looks beautiful. But I wonder if it will have more camera options, it seems a too zoomed in to me. Also hoping the final version will have a stable framerate, SKB was pretty bad when there was too much enemies onscreen.
Edit: Now that I saw the entire video…will it have non-human enemies? That’s a step in the right direction, I guess.

    • tubers

The zoomed camera will allow better performance as it won’t render much on screen.

So far, there doesn’t seem to be much enemies rendered at once but it’s still basically a gameplay preview.

The end of the vid has a dragon boss and it seems the gameplay shifts to full 3D

      • Fronkhead

I hope they will get rid of the crazy amounts of antialiasing from Burst (I’ve never seen so much antialiasing on a 3DS game, ever), I’d imagine that crippled the framerate too.

  • Maksim Tsirulnik

Looks interesting. Definitely an improvement in many areas.

Kind of wish the people playing the game weren’t making the perverted noises during the the transformation scenes and when Homura lost her outfit.

    • Shippoyasha

Heh, I think it comes with the territory of fighting/action games. Just try sound-testing female characters in fighting games without the action and music and it sounds a bit erotic. I didn’t think much of it personally. It’s not like in some ecchi anime where they get way more erotic than battle-grunts. Plus, games like these can afford a few erotic sounds here and there.

      • British_Otaku

Just female characters? It can go either way, especially when the voice work is done in a certain way.

      • Maksim Tsirulnik

I’m talking about the two guys making the commentary.

The characters in the game are just fine.

        • Shippoyasha

The stream was pretty wild for sure.

  • This looks a lot better than Burst, love it. Gameplay is still awesome, so I’m happy.

Still finds weird that Kagura and Naraku are news, but are not part of a team composed of 5 girls. Hmm… maybe they’re a preview or something to the new game related to Shinovi Versus.

Also, when Homura transforms, lol at the guy saying “Kawaii desu ne”~ :’)

    • Shippoyasha

The commentator was saying how Homura was both ‘kakkoii’ and ‘kawaii’ meaning she looked cool and cute at the same time. I couldn’t have described it better. heh

  • butts

Getting rid of this to avoid more potential arguments. Hyped for all three games.

  • butts

I’m getting both. Stop needlessly trying to start stuff after people point out when you’ve said something stupid.

  • tubers

    Too early for that IMO.

It doesn’t even look cel-shaded like the VITA (black lineart/borders for models) and the characters still have no dynamic shadows.

It’s still rendering one side at best with its perspective shifts unlike the VITA does with a full controllable 3D camera.

The footage is pretty murky and it’s not easy to see how good or bad some of the details are.. or lack of.

  • Freakmasta

I lol’d that even the monsters have big chests. Will we see some monster stripping action too?

    • Shippoyasha

Makes me wonder if some of the monsters used to be ninjas themselves, ala Claymore manga/anime.

      • OutlawStar26ep

That sounds like something that could actually happen. I’ve noticed some creepy things happening in the game, the youma(the monsters) have to come from somewhere, they could have once been shinobi corrupted by power.

  • Landale

I’d suggest you stop trying to start shit.

    • TheExile285

Don’t even bother man. I’m just gonna sit back and laugh at him.

  • butts

You seem really damn eager to try and start a console war when most people are just happy we’re getting more games. You should probably get some priorities in order if you can’t just be content with that.

  • butts

Now you’re just making an ass of yourself.

I sincerely hope you have fun doing whatever it is you’re trying to do since lord knows you don’t actually care about playing video games.

  • Landale

Rules 2, 4, and 5. Please go read them and stop this nonsense.

  • He’s coming. (ΦωΦ)

    • tubers

I find his left hand “gesture” weird.. too feminine perhaps? xD

    • butts

I wonder why they picked Murasame out of all people. I expect him to be on the receiving end of a lot of jokes/beatings in the story.

Here’s hoping the other guy will be Kiriya-sensei, but I really can’t see him fighting against any of his students.

      • Landale

I’ve yet to finish up with Burst, but his profile does put forth the question of when he’d set aside his issues with Ikaruga. Could easily touch on that if he’s got his own part to the story.

        • butts

Yeah, you have a point. I guess his part in the story could focus on him and Ikaruga reconciling or something.

Or he could just be thrown in as the butt monkey of the game. Only time will tell.

      • Can feel it. He’s going to be a joke character, that’s for sure. Can’t see him having an harem or something. No. Not Ikagura’s brother. Curious to see his gameplay, though.

Would have loved Kiriya, but considering the fact that they said “One of the two males is an existing one”, well, Murasame. The other one is most likely entirely new.

        • British_Otaku

You can tell he is going to be a joke character from the few seconds he had in the livestream. Anyone who was introduced as much weaker than a mainstay many games ago isn’t going to have Yagyu and Katsuragi change their target anyway.

    • deadMastershiro

Is that what he really looks like! I was expecting Orochimaru or at least kabuto look.

      • Yup. Hey, he actually looks hot… in that picture. You know, for a creep.

    • SetzerGabbiani

He’s supposed to be pretty inept with that chain-sickle. If he’s playable, the back story is going to have to deal with him training his ass off to get to Ikaruga’s level. He does look more like a protagonist than I anticipated, however.

He could end up being like Adonis in Disgaea I suppose.

    • Hines Green III

Gawd he’s pretty O_o Can’t staph looking at abs.

  • Zero_Destiny

And here you go, after all your warnings still at it.

    • tubers

      Wow. That was fast.

      Swift justice I guess.

  • Mecha_the_Hedgehog

That looks beautiful really cant wait for this game not gonna lie I’m impressed. Also demons and large boss battles pretty cool. Still not a fan of Male playable characters really kills the Yuri fantasy the series has built up.

Just wondering does it have online co-op was that confirmed or is it just local?

    • Landale

Yaoi. There you go, Yuri fantasy is safe. You’re welcome.

  • Pietro Spina

    Very, VERY disappointing camera angle

    • Shippoyasha

I think it can work though. Even if it needs some tweaks. I think the dynamic shaking and zooming in would be awesome when you’re destroying enemies up front. But the camera should pan a bit back if you’re being attacked from behind. Also nice that the camera pans slightly upwards so the game can show off the skyline and verticality and even work some near upskirt shots in for the fanservice. It’s not perfect, but I can see it work very well with some tweaks.

    • Sergio Briceño

It kind of works with 1vs1 brawlers or ones where the maps arent’s too large or ther is little progression.

Maybe if it weren’t the only camera option… Because truth be told it does look “cool”, it’s just not too practical.

    • Linhua

… I hear ya there, buddy… but i’m pretty sure this is just giving us an idea what is coming next.

… i’m sure these guys will figure out how to sex up the camera angles to work with the co-op.

… on another note… I am THOROUGHLY impressed with the visuals… and the fact that it’s got Co-Op… that’s a MASSIVE PLUS for me and my friends.

… would be awesome if this was the game that was coming to Multiple Platforms though… imagine playing this on the PS3 with THREE other friends!

… that’s not to say that the 3DS can’t do the same thing Locally with 4 3DSes. It would just be kinda cool to see us all on the same screen creating havoc.

… my only concern right now though is if the 3DS is going to even be able to handle all this carnage now that it’s in full 3D. I mean… the frame rate was pretty terrible in Burst… so i’m kinda worried.

      • Pietro Spina

I can’t deny the improvements but I’m still worried about off-screen attacks and trying to stay focused due to camera movements.

Still they made a great technical advancement.

        • Linhua

… hopefully they take a page from the Super Smash Brothers series.

… I find the camera work to be pretty well done what with all the havoc that randomly takes place all over the stage.

… I understand that the scale between Senran Kagura’s lengthy stages and Super Smash Brothers’ significantly smaller stages are like night and day… but I believe the zooming and panning done in Smash Bros. can be applied to Senran Kagura as they progress the stage.

… then again… this is gonna be for the 3DS where everyone is getting their own screen… so this kind of eliminates the camera issue when you think about it. They don’t have to worry about fitting everyone on one screen. They just have to make sure that the screen is focused on the player’s character and any enemies nearing their character.

  • hazelnut1112

Loving the first game and this does seem like an improvement. Really hoping they release a physical copy in the US this time.

  • oshiritataki

Finally a TRUE sequel to the original (Burst doesn’t count)! ^^

    • J_Joestar

it was really more like an expansion/enhanced edition than a true sequel.

  • Fronkhead

The visuals really are a huge jump up — loving the more detailed character models and the cel shaded visuals (which I’d love to see brought to the next Versus game, as the rim lighting and gradients didn’t look like a 3D anime).
I’m guessing there’s no antialiasing this time around because the original’s crazy amounts of antialiasing crippled performance for no good reason.
I’m just hoping the camera angle can be zoomed out on the fly, as I can see that being a pain with lots of enemies onscreen. Hm.

Edit: There seems to be a big emphasis on targeting enemies, so maybe that explains the new camera. I’m fine with that.

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

    oh man….this looks better

  • Greg

Words can’t even describe my excitement right now. I will have have this game no matter what.

  • Speedo Redempteur

Alright demo of the gameplay , they need to fix the camera ASAP.

  • Artworks of Murasame and the two new girls.

So, they need to reveal the last male. And I’m hoping the two new girls are part of a new group, thus three girls remains to be revealed… hopefully. I just want a new, complete team. Please.

  • J_Joestar

is it weird that the first thing i thought of when seeing the new Henshin sequences was…

cept rather than Cards it scrolls and instead of a reader it’s boobs.
