Senran Kagura 2: Deep Crimson Will Be Entirely In Stereoscopic 3D

By Ishaan . January 8, 2014 . 8:57am

Senran Kagura 2: Deep Crimson’s story is set in Kyoto, Marvelous AQL revealed during a livestream demonstration of the game last night, according to Game Jouhou.

In addition to showing off the game’s decidedly more polished visual presentation, Marvelous also confirmed that Senran Kagura 2 will be entirely in stereoscopic 3D. In Senran Kagura Burst, 3D was disabled during actual combat gameplay.

Senran Kagura 2: Deep Crimson is scheduled for release on August 7th in Japan.

So a chance of localization is possible?

    • EinMugenTenshin

I am betting it is a question of when as apparently the last game did pretty well here on 3DS. Personally I’m still waiting to buy a vita for when they release the game for it, which is more of a gamble than anyone with a 3DS.

      • Shippoyasha

I think Shinovi Versus might actually do pretty good considering western fans have been talking about forever. And I was shocked that Burst did so well that it was chart topping in America. There clearly is a hunger for some Japanese quirk and fun in western gamerbase.

  • Brimfyre

Thank the mammary gods. It is always a bummer when I play a game on 3DS that isn’t all 3D.

  • Fronkhead

Oh wow, this is great news. I’m guessing the ridiculous amounts of antialiasing from the original game (and Burst) have been removed. I’d take 3D over that any day — 3DS games always feel higher res in 3D, like there’s a lot more space (since it is essentially rendering 2x the pixels to create the depth, I suppose).

With this and the massively upgraded visuals in terms of detail (seems to be using Shinovi Versus-esque character models but with the 3D-anime like cel shading from Burst), I’m happier. Now hopefully the targeting system is good as it seems that’s why the camera’s zoomed in now.

    • Freakmasta

I’m actually the opposite. I rarely turn the 3D on since it slows the framerate for certain games (and kills battery life). So it’s nice to have it in 3D, but I wouldn’t mind if the game was in 2D. As long as it has a smooth framerate, I’m happy.

      • Enzo

The funny thing about that is the fact that in order to run something in 3D, you actually have to run it at twice the framerate. So if it is running 60fps in 3D, it’s actually running in 120fps, but you only see 60fps since the two images are running on top of each other and being perceived as an image with depth.

      • Burst was in 2D and it didn’t help. It’s really just up to the developer. Tekken on 3DS ran at 60FPS in 3D, DoA/SFIV didn’t. I use 3D as often as I can, but it’s true that unfortunately some games perform better with 3D off.

        • Enzo

I’m assuming you meant that DoA didn’t run 60fps in 3D. The game most certainly ran 60fps with the feature turned off. And I think SFIV did run in 60fps but don’t quote me on that.

Also, I think a little optimization would have made the game more stable in Burst. There are better looking, more technical games on the 3DS that ran at stable 30/60fps on the 3DS.

          • Whoops, yea. I meant in 3D. I typed “on 3DS” >_>

DoA did run at 60FPS in 2D and at 30FPS in 3D. I could’ve sworn SFIV was 60FPS in 2D. NB and Capcom made that weird promo video where Harada was bragging to Ono about being able to achieve 60FPS in 3D.

Anyways, yea. You’re final point is what I’m getting at.

        • Fronkhead

It was the antialiasing in Burst that killed that game’s framerate, I reckon. But even so it was puzzling that the game’s framerate is so low.

Likewise Pokémon X/Y feels poorly optimised. There’s games on 3DS exhibiting far greater visuals onscreen with 3D mode and more complex AI than run smoother than it. Luckily it’s only an RPG so I wasn’t bothered, but I’d like to see improvements in Pokémon Z.

          • You’re probably right, though even the original Senran Kagura had slow down issues. Burst was supposed to improve upon them, but I guess it still wasn’t enough. The original Senran Kagura must have ran like shit, which is why I think it’s more about optimization than just the anti-aliasing.

      • Fronkhead

With the exception of the games which aren’t locked at a certain framerate in both modes (Mario Kart 7 is 60 in 3D and 3D, so is A Link Between Worlds, for example), I do switch off 3D.
I too would like a smooth framerate, so maybe the framerate will go up with 3D switched off. Which would be nice. But if they optimise it so it’s a steady and smooth framerate in 3D mode like the majority of 3DS games (few games I own are sub-30fps) I won’t be complaining.

    • omgwtfhax

Aliasing is the problem. Anti-aliasing is what (partially) fixes it.

      • Fronkhead

Of course, but it’s not a worthy trade-off. The ridiculous amounts of antialiasing (more than I’ve ever seen in any other 3DS game) come with a performance penalty, and I’d rather have the aliasing and 3D visuals over antialiasing and 2D visuals + a performance hit.

Some 3DS games employ basic antialiasing (nothing as crazy as Senran Kagura’s) when 3D is switched off, like Luigi’s Mansion 2, Ocarina of Time 3D and others, which I assume might happen with this game.

  • idrawrobots

    Even the bottom screen? Awesome!

    • D-Omen

      Tamsoft does what Nintendon’t!

      • TheGioG

  • This is cool, I don’t even use the 3DS feature like that tho.

  • karldeck

If Total Biscuit knew about this series, he would go insane.

I know, right? No FOV slider…

    • Lalum

Good thing nobody cares about him.

  • SetzerGabbiani

Clear out that SD card. Probably going to be a huge download.

  • Now that’s going to look beautiful =)

  • Linhua

    … ALL 3D…?

    … i’m REALLY Happy… but now i’m REALLY Scared… =

  • Sentsuizan_93

    Sounds awesome!

  • OlimacFTW

The hype for this game escalates more and more! I knew Tamsoft wouldn’t dissapoint.

  • Awesome. Here’s hoping the larger budget and the experience they’ve gained developing multiple titles means a better performing 3DS game. Burst having slow down has almost nothing to do with the 3DS hardware and more with bad optimization. There are plenty of more complex games on the 3DS that run a hell of a lot smoother.

I assumed they dramatically changed the camera because the gameplay was going to be in 3D and I guess I was right. It does still look a bit awkward, especially with gates getting in the way, but there’s still plenty of time to work out the kinks.

  • Daniel Jeanbaptiste

SWEET!! They are tapping into 3DS hardware perfectly!!

  • Luis Camargo

That will make the game much better on the 2DS =)

    • British_Otaku

Implying that 3DS owners can’t turn off the 3D (through the slider or parental controls) to enjoy the 2DS experience… >_> Even if it isn’t 100% stable in 3D, the hardware is identical so that we can play in 2D.

      • Luis Camargo

It was more of a sarcastic remark. I do not use much 3D, but I do know a lot of people who like.

I just hope this will be better than the first game.

  • Mitsukiix

    too bad i only have a 2ds

  • Josué

Yet another game that I won’t be able to enjoy entirely due to my myopia :(

    • British_Otaku

Don’t sweat it. Even if this game does have some of the better 3D on the system, most of the charm of the visuals will be on the animations much like Ace Attorney.

I know that feel, bro. 3D is useless for me since I have myopia too.

    • natchu96

My eyes are fine, but I’ve turned on the 3D maybe once per game I own. for 20 seconds.

It’s fun novelty, but it’s kind of pointless and kind of strains your eyes regardless.

  • TheExile285

Oh sweet! Love the 3D in SKB ^_________^

  • J_Joestar

3D bewbs all the time? nice.

  • TheGioG

Brings a dang ol’ tear to my eye, it does. Now if the Shinovi Versus ladies could get in on some of that everlastingly 3D oppai action too…

  • Kayseur

I really wish there was no region-lock on the 3DS so that I could play this game this year. I have yet to try Burst but this one already sounds (and looks, from the trailer) pretty good.

    • J_Joestar

it would be nice if we got a localization announcement by the end of the year at least.

Are they older in the new game? At least looks like it for me

  • Kornelious

Huh, A game where the 3D will actually be worth it. :P
