Yumi’s Odd Odyssey (AKA Sayonara Umihara Kawase) is headed to the Nintendo eShop for 3DS in North America soon. While the game doesn’t have an announced release date yet, Natsume say they’ll share one soon, and have released a trailer for the game.

Yumi’s Odd Odyssey is part of a series of cult classic platformers. The game has Yumi, a travelling sushi chef, carrying a fishing line that you can use to swing across gaps, Bionic Commando-style.

  • Wonder if Arino will play it…

I remember him playing the original.

  • The trailer worked. I won’t be getting it.

The Umihara Kawase games are honestly pretty fun…but yeah, Natsume’s pretty bad at making trailers.

I wonder how much it’ll cost. I don’t think many would buy the game for $40…IMO $20 is the perfect price point for this.

      • Maybe if there’s a demo I can try it. Also. 7 dislikes? I guess there’s somewhat of a fan base for these.

I don’t blame you if the game doesn’t look impressive but they are trying to recreate the SNES and Playstation 1 aesthetics because it’s being released as a remake of those classics. I think the low key visuals actually gives it that old charm.

The trailer is really bad. Just watching it makes me cringe. Check out the Japanese trailer, gives a much better impression of what the game is about: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b5RoyXLara4

Glad to see it finally coming over here. After playing the Japanese version I can easily say it one of the best handheld platformers in years.

I’m more worried about the price. All I buy on eshop is through prepaid cards and I also buy retail games there so I’m always in a budget. Will it be priced like Ace Attorney? Or like minor releases like 10, 20 USD?
Also holy crap is that trailer bad. I don’t think this is doing a good job in presenting Umihara Kawase to the world.

I almost feel like it’s up to people like myself who’ve played the earlier versions to get people hyped about this. I can easily see this gem flying under the radar, especially with a meh trailer like that. Umihara, Yumi, whatever you want to call her, she deserves a solid showing in the West.

  • Shippoyasha

Little disappointed that the idiom ‘sea fish is fat on belly, river fish fat on back’ Umihara Kawase didn’t make the cut. Also, the game is considered one of the best skill platformer and was a classic in Japan for a good 20 years now.

Very glad western gamers finally get to play this legendary series. A bit sad that it’s digital release and the iconic name got a change.

  • This game so much charm ^-^ Guess I’ll pick it up if it ever get’s localized.

  • pedrron

Music sounds so good, and I def like what I see. Thank you Natsume!

  • Heath Bunch

Happy to finally see this series get a western release, but still a tiny bit disappointed with the name change.

    …and euro eshop? :(
