Metroid Prime And Donkey Kong Country Returns Used The Same Engine

While you may not have guessed it, the Metroid Prime games and Donkey Kong Country Returns were both developed using the same engine, Nintendo have shared with GamesTM magazine (thanks, Nintendo Life).

Discussing the influence of Metroid Prime on the Donkey Kong games, Michael Kelbaugh, president of Retro Studios, revealed: “Specifically answering your question about 3D to 2D, what you may not realise is that we constructed the levels in Donkey Kong Country Returns and Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze in very much the same manner as we did the levels in Metroid Prime.”

He added, “However, levels in Returns and Tropical Freeze are much, much larger and more detailed. And I’ll share this with you; we used the Metroid Prime engine and tools to develop Returns, so technically, the lessons learned on Metroid Prime were directly applied.”

Originally released for the Wii, Donkey Kong Country Returns was later ported to the Nintendo 3DS by Monster Games, the developer behind Pilotwings Resort and Excitebots.

Well now that Tropical Freeze is almost out.

    I NEED a new metroid!

Totally agree with you. I would love playing it on 3DS and even better if it were side scroller like Fusion/Zero Mission or 2.5D like Other M.

I really don’t want another first person Metroid. I would even rather have a 3rd person, over the shoulder game.

I understand you, it could kill the game for some people: when I got the chance to play Corruption I hated the controls so much but tried to ignore that for a couple of hours in order to play the only Metroid I hadn’t played till date. Sadly after straining my elbow and having advanced little into the game I had to quit it for good.

It just didn’t work for me, specifically the part of the motion controls; which I also hated in Other M although aside from that I think Other M is the real evolution of 2D Metroid.

Let’s just hope for the best, I mean it’s been a while since the last portable Metroid!!

Why not both? The Wii U could let you play in third person on the TV and first person on the gamepad. Something like Nintendoland’s Metroid.

          • idrawrobots

That could work for a 3D Metroid! but I still want more 2D Metroid too.

    • Serge

I blame Nintendoland, but now i want a new Metroid more than ever.

    • James Enk

i want a retro style 2D one for the 3DS and a huge, impressive 3D one for the WiiU

Don’t you mean Starfox or F-Zero?
What the hell, all of the above.

  • idrawrobots

I would love to have a Donkey Kong Country game with take-turns multiplayer and K. Rool.

Not really surprising, when you consider the kinds of games that something like, say, PhyreEngine has been used to make.
