Senran Kagura Burst Expands Into Europe On February 28 With A Retail Release

By Spencer . January 16, 2014 . 1:48am

Marvelous AQL Europe set February 28 as the street date for Senran Kagura Burst. The 3DS beat ’em up will be released in stores. Here’s a look at the box art:

The game will also be available in Europe’s eShop a day earlier. Senran Kagura Burst was localized by Xseed and includes the original Senran Kagura as a bonus.

Ahh life, hopefully the back of the box is filled with hometown.

  • Yggdr5

    Japanese box art for reference

Is this the first time the overseas release of a Japanese game actually received more risque boxart?

      • British_Otaku

Usually, when you ask “am I the only one…?” or “Is this the first time…?” the answer is no.

Though I don’t have an immediate example in mind.

        • Zeonsilt

          • British_Otaku

Aren’t they about the same or “covered up” in some stores? More often than not the changes aren’t significant at all…

        • GH56734

          There’s always a first time :P

          • British_Otaku

There is, but in this case few of us have the time to look up all Japanese games just to see whether this is the first localisation with a more lewd cover.

Now that I have the time for simple research, it seems the 360 exclusive Record of Agarest War: The Really Naughty Edition mentioned in this thread predates this by 4 years.

Perhaps, there is another game here that outdates that. This is definitely not the first one.

    • TrueDefault

I hope this is the reversible cover!

    • Keko

It’s like XSEED saw this and thought “Nope, not enough lewd here. We should release one that fully describes the game”.

  • Sentsuizan_93

    Holy mother of box arts…..
    Awesome! Time to pre-order~ ^_^

  • Highasthesky

Hell would freeze over and Lucifer would start selling free ice cream before America got a box art like this……god i hate my countries views….

    • Landale
      • Highasthesky

Touche guy touche, but i think you get my point.

        • David García Abril

I still think the “Senran Kagura” cover is more “risqué” than these two, to be honest…

          • Highasthesky

I do too, but i see the point he’s trying to make. Apples and oranges i guess.

      • deadMastershiro

Wait was the Agarest war cover real!

        • British_Otaku

It is and it has a trailer:

For whatever reason, it was both North America and 360 exclusive but at the least it exists. >_>

          • deadMastershiro

          • British_Otaku

      • Record Of Agarest War yes, but in all honesty I don’t see the Catherine one as all that bad lol

      • Stranger On The Road

The Agarest War cover was for the limited edition not the actual game.

I recall reading that it was available “behind the counter” in some retailers or you could get it online. A mistake that Aksys haven’t repeated.

  • Actually, I like it. Homura knows how to be a sexy chick~

  • ReidHershel

    • Alex Sargeant

I think the actual fear was that it would be pulled down from shelves in misunderstood outrage from people who normally have nothing to do with games ala all the Illusion/Rapelay setbacks.

Given that PEGI rated DOA Xtreme 2 as a 12+ here I guess the fear isn’t so prevalent in Europe.

    • Niitris

Because most of the U.S. has bad taste in things that are actually appealing to the eyes.

  • British_Otaku

So I assume there isn’t a limited edition for the game coming… I guess that’s fine, it means North America and Japan won’t miss out on anything.

The cover is awesome enough that I’ll buy it in GAME if they actually stock it for the retail experience of chattering about it.

Kudos for Zen United (+ Marvelous AQL Europe) being pretty fast with their localisation for once, though I don’t expect I’ll play it much more than enough to get the whole story translated.

    • Sentsuizan_93

Honestly, I’d be surprised if it’s stocked in my GAME store. Reputation be damned, I’d buy it! ^_^

      • British_Otaku

The few stores that survived the purge of 2012 should be pretty good (not necessarily with niche titles) if they want to stick around, but I’ll probably ask my GAME store later today or in February to see whether they are going to stock it.

  • D-Omen

Well, this is going to be awkward to buy.

  • TheSwordUser

    Breast box art ever.

Also, this is sooner than I expected. Since Rune factory 4 will be published by Zen United as well, it gives hope that it’s not too far off.

  • tubers

  • Prinnydoom

So…..we get the best box art. Nice ^___^

  • ZetaSiren

lol and North America only got a digital release…oh well :P

  • Heisst

Not even the japanese box art was that lewd.

  • deadMastershiro

Yep i could have never gotten this while people were looking.

    • British_Otaku

One of my habits in the past has been reorganising store shelves so niche titles (Okami etc) get seen more than the sports titles and games which already got millions of sales…

I’ll apply my habit here, so even if you go to the store to buy the new Kirby Triple Deluxe for example, you will have to pick through a thousand of these. :P

      • deadMastershiro

Thanks for your service as a otaku.

  • They say, “Never judge book by its cover.” But… DAMN! I ain’t judging, but I definitely want to check out the content. (Double entendre FTW!)

    • deadMastershiro

      I second that!

  • Masa

Man, that cover will get some heads turning lol.

    • British_Otaku

Here’s hoping that we don’t any sort of repeat of what happened with Dead or Alive Dimensions (Sweden, Norway and Denmark didn’t get the game in short: ).

It was a mix up based on a series of factors, a recent Swedish manga translator being accused of possessing child pornography, a single person on a forum bringing up the question of whether DOA:D counts and despite the police not having a problem, the distributor (who mostly does Pokemon and has backed out on other occasions) aren’t going out of their way to distribute it and so on.

If this passes PAL wide without a problem, it would be nice.

      • Masa

never knew about that, i’ll be getting the game from shopto, never get games from stores anymore. :)

      • Shippoyasha

Just horrific that people use videogames as a way to accuse people of such serious things. Freedom of expression world wide is just under constant attack, isn’t it?

        • British_Otaku

In this case to my understanding it was just a mix up with no solid accusations from any major party, but everyone who could have sold the game chickened out. >_>

It is true that some people use video games and other media in extreme cases to accuse people of stuff though. I hope to see at least the video game industry open up some more in the near future.

  • TheExile285

    Love that boxart lol

  • fairysun

Maybe the box art cover will change the general perception that 3DS is kids-only gaming system.

    • Curan_Altea

Clearly we’d prefer them to think we’re perverts.

(Not hating on the game for the record)

      • fairysun

        Yep !
3DS a gaming console for kids and perverts :D

  • European physical release but not one for ‘MURICA?! Oh well, time to import once again.

    • British_Otaku

Import? The system is region locked and an American with a European 3DS sounds like a crazy minority only benefiting from a small library of pluses in comparison to the other way around or anyone with a Japanese system.

I wouldn’t import a physical release unless it was cheaper, more common and came with a fancy booklet for this game.

  • nororu

shinovi versus? whats going on :S

  • Josué

Those moments when the boxart makes you feel uncomfortable in front of the cashier.

  • Hooray for Europe! I really like your box art too. Congrats guys =^_^=

  • Nigri as Miss Monday for reference…

    • and in comparison, here’s Katsuragi, a playable character in the game

      • J_Joestar

really wonder how she manages to keep it on just perfectly like that… double sided tape?

        • Dexward

          Anime logic.

        • Arcana Drill

Ninja Nipples, dont doubt, accept it.

        • Go2hell66

Some kind of magnectic force exherted by her nipples?

  • James Williams

    Consider it bought!

  • Eric Harris

Ok, now you guys can’t complain about Conception II. Or maybe we can complain about this game and you can continue to complain about Conception II.

  • Kayriss Wins

It’s like they’re deliberately trying to turn Homura into the Cover girl for the series outside of Japan, which I have NOTHING against ofcourse… I just think it’s funny.

    • British_Otaku

Is that a surprise? Senran Kagura Burst is an expansion of the first 3DS title, most of the reason to own it in Japan is to see Homura and Hebijo’s stories aside from all of the fixes.

Burst is her game with a green motif while Shoujotachi no Shinei (Skirting Shadows) was Asuka’s one with a red motif… Though the colours are flipped for their auras, even if I admit Homura rocks red and the Shana look better than anyone in Hanzo could.

      • Kayriss Wins

I’m curious about these “fixes” because Burst still has hilarious bugs, which I don’t mind I knew before getting this game It was more for the novelty instead of a superb gameplay but back to Homura, I was surpised at first when I saw her chibi self on my 3DS screen because I was expecting Asuka mainly because I though of her as the Cover girl since she represents light as Homura represents Dark, you’d think they put Asuka up there simply because of it but ahh it’s to obvious to assume good should always be in the spotlight. The Japanese cover however put EVERYONE on the cover lol.

        • British_Otaku

I was biting myself as I wrote that and considering typing “some fixes” or “a few fixes”, but there are tons of nice additions in Burst if you played the first game.

          1) A third, air special unlocked at Level 15.
          2) Smoother animations.
          3) Additional voice work from when you start the game, save, beat your way through ninja barriers and so on.
          4) Tolerable and more voices for generic enemies.
          5) A specific level where an aerial enemy an enemy doesn’t spawn unless you beat it up before it escapes by knowing it is there or if you wait for a long time for it to run it (at least it isn’t unwinnable and it is optional, even if it ruined your grade) is fixed.
          6) I experienced a bug in the boss rush where the music stacked together from each boss, it hasn’t turned up in Burst.
          7) A whole additional campaign with more costumes, more characters, more music, more interesting enemies, fights with dialogue in the middle of them, three+ characters in VN sections at once, more interesting settings, more interesting missions and Crimson Homura.

The original game for the most part was the same game with the best half cut out with even less polish though Burst definitely isn’t there yet as well. I’ve found some unique bugs.

You or others expecting Asuka is based on it being the first title you played and not knowing the angle the game came from. Asuka got her spotlight in 2011’s game release. Burst in 2012 was out for Homura and such as you can see in how the games were promoted.

          • Kayriss Wins

I definitely noticed voice overs differences, like how once you max out the Yin and Yang attributes for the girls it sort of changes they’re personalities, Yin tends to be more submissive (submissive Yagyu is ADORABLE!… *Ahem*…) Yang for more aggressive and Flash is they’re regular voice work. I found that alone to be a nice touch. Those other changes you mentioned I would know of since I never played the previous build of Skirting Shadows or Crimson Girls but I’ll take your word for it. Also It’s only natural that anyone would suspect Asuka to be the cover girl, it almost always IS the Main character, But like I said I’m totally down for Homura being the cover girl.

  • Yup…. This is gonna be my Guilty Pleasure 3DS game.

MAybe I’ll get this fro my GF too xD

  • Just Tim

I fail to see why the cover is “NSFW”, as claimed.

  • Pheria

I want a physical copy of this game so badly. I’m tempted to import it. I do, unfortunately, know that my US system won’t play it. I wish they would just release it physically here, too!

    Congrats Europe! -jelly face-

  • Hinataharem

“American Kirby is hardcore/angry” has big competition

  • Kalis Konig

i read burst…as breast at first glance.

  • Neppygear

Wow, could they possibly have chosen a more questionable box art? (Yes.)

Anyway, Zen United, you gonna delay this any?

  • WhyWai

How I wish there is a boxed release for US..
