Conception II Rated “M” By ESRB

By Ishaan . January 17, 2014 . 8:30am

Nintendo 3DS and PS Vita RPG Conception II: Children of the Seven Stars has been rated by the ESRB, and come away with an “M” (Mature) rating. The ESRB cites “Fantasy Violence, Language, Mild Blood, Partial Nudity, Sexual Themes” as content descriptors for the game on Nintendo 3DS. A rating for the Vita version hasn’t been published yet.

Here’s the rating summary the ESRB used to describe Conception II:

This is a role-playing game in which players assume the role of a young student trying to rid the world of monsters. While exploring dungeons, players engage in turn-based battles with a variety of human and fantastical enemies (e.g., ogres, demons). Human characters occasionally use guns to shoot the player’s characters; other fighters use hammers, swords, or blasts of energy to deplete opponents’ health meters.

A handful of scenes depict a character covered in blood across the chest and upper arm. The game includes some suggestive dialogue (e.g., “You have giant boobs!” “I think your breasts are very lovely . . . Um, well…Their shape is…I think boys would like them.”). During the course of the game, players are able to engage in a Classmating system, in which two characters interact to create a Star Child; these brief sequences do not depict sexual acts, though the female characters shown are often partially nude and placed in suggestive poses (e.g., on their hands and knees).

Female characters are also depicted with jiggling breasts, and camera angles often zoom-in on cleavage and buttocks. The words “sh*t” and ‘a*shole’ appear in the dialogue.

Conception II will be available this spring for Nintendo 3DS and PlayStation Vita. Atlus USA are publishing the game in North America.

  • Thatguy

Wait, what about part with babies?

  • Arcana Drill

The ironic thing is… many childs already see movies and shows that have this at much worse levels. I think a M rating is too much. But whatever :/

    • SerendipityX

I’m thinking maybe its the closeup shots of the suggestive material. In movies and show that stuff is there, its just not super zoomed in.

      • Arcana Drill

the funny thing is that monster monpiece was rated 12, and seran kagura with all boing boing was T… and the level of suggestiviness on these games… let Conception ashamed.

        • RagingTiger44

So I just looked up Monster Monpiece. I don’t card battle. That “extreme rub” though. Cannot be played in public.

        • SerendipityX

Hmm, then my next guess would be the pregnancy stuff. While there is no sexual act, maybe the game is treading a grayish line (at least for America).

    • harmonyworld

      What shows?
      Adventure time??

      • Arcana Drill

cause i’m not american i’ll list the shows that i and many on my class saw when we were kids (10-11), CSI, Law and order, veronica mars, Case closed, bones, house…..

        • Highasthesky

How i miss case closed, you’re lucky you guys got that game on wii =(

          • British_Otaku

I’m still playing through that game, I can barely stomach the written names and dubtitles but dual audio is a blessing.

If you want to play it, it doesn’t take much effort to get Homebrew, Gecko and then import a disc you can play (you could pirate, but why would I recommend that when I see copies around for pennies) with the only requirement being an SD card and a Wii of course.

          • Highasthesky

Thanks i might try that i’v been wanting a Detective Conan game for a while.

        • Scipio

And those shows are still not rated for a young audience as far as tv ratings go. I saw them at a young age as well, it’s hardly a uncommon thing.

          • idrawrobots

            CSI is only TV-14

          • Scipio

Same for Bones, but I think I was still a bit to young to view it when it came out.

        • FlamingFirewire

The funny part about Case Closed/Detective Conan is that the shown is essentially made for the whole family – It’s one of the most watched anime in Japan.

  • Blick Winkel

    Classmating. Classic.

  • Nagisa

With the VIta being region free, I’m pleased I can play at least one version of this game regardless of whether it comes out the UK or not. I hope we get more 3DS/VIta multiplatform games.

  • sorenman2

Huh, well was hoping for T rating but then again I’m not surprise Rune Factory 4 gotten a E10 rating when it has content for T ratings. This just shows the ESRB don’t have a perfect rubic.

    • Altin

I can see the sexist Kotaku article from a gorillion miles away.

Pre-Ordered like the Fist of the North Star.

      • Scipio

I’m just getting it because I want silly games like this to come over to the West. But I’ll agree, it’ll be funny to see what they have to say about it.

      • M’iau M’iaut

Please keep the topic to the game — and not how someone else will cover it. Thanks.

        • Altin

Cant keep promises, but I will try ;) Also, you might want to focus on deleting spam comments. I think they are slightly worse than me spilling out the truth ;)

  • Charles

I need to get this game! Also, I’m not a perv.

    • Derek E Nay

      I AM!

      • otakumike

      • RagingTiger44

        Upvoted for honesty.

      • God

Me too brother! But that’s not at all the reason i’m buying this, i’m buying this game… err… for… FOR SCIENCE!

  • DanijoEX ♬ the Cosmic Owl

Seriously…? I was actually thinking it would get a T-Rating. Oh well…still getting it either way.

  • Herok♞

A M rating isn’t surprising, I thought that this had aready gotten one a long time ago, remember Halo gets an M rating and its T for Teen at most, heck same goes for Persona 3 and 4

    • Freakmasta

Except for P3 involving shooting yourself in the head and the persona, Mara.

    • TheExile285

Persona has topless Personas/monsters and tons of cursing though,

      • God

Persona 3 and 4 have a pretty nihilistic plot though…

      • ReidHershel

        Satan’s 6 boobies.

        • karldeck

          Dianas boob body.

    • Kaetsu

Persona 4 should have had a teen rating but as for P3 I think the M rating was suitable. There were nude shadows and personas, lot’s of swearing, Shirakawa Boulevard, shooting yourself and Mara.

  • epy

Does that really deserve an M rating? Middle school level talk about boobs and some implied sex and BAM! you get the same rating as Manhunt.

    • Rintarou

I mean, ratings are relative of course but I still feel like that Manhunt comparison is relevant and pretty ridiculous/hilarious.

    • Ric Vazquez

It’s ridiculous if you ask me

    • almostautumn

      You didn’t read it.
There’s blood. There’s partial nudity. There’s suggestion of sex. There are swearwords outside of the accepted sort (sh*t and a*shole are still considered vulgar).
I’m surprised there’s no mention of child-violence, seeing as your kids equally take a beating in the dungeons too.

In a lot of ways I do think this is appropriate: if I were a non-game-intelligent parent giving my 13 year old cash to get a videogame, I really don’t know if I’d be comfortable with him/her bringing this videogame back.* So the ESRB is, in my eyes, thoughtful and correct here.

*I totally would be okay with it and really couldn’t care less what my own kid brought back: entertainment media = entertainment media. But still: many western parents huff and puff over sex and sexual imagery, and I do believe they have the right to do that. It’s a cultural thing, is all.

  • taekk

Man, Americans and our weird double standards as usual (Violence ok, sex BAD) This is rated 15+ in Japan and if it’s anything like the first game, it probably has absolutely no nudity. Boys like BOOOOBS??? You can’t know that until you’re 18!

    • Kamakuma

I’m glad many people are seeing the light here. It’s kinda ridiculous but not sure how we can change this standard. V.V

In any case im still buying both editions because my wallet can never have a full stomach! @[email protected]

    • Scipio

Senran Kagura is anything but subtle about its breast and it got a T rating.

      • Kumiko Akimoto

Because there’s are different levels and senran kagura is nothing compared to some worst stuff

        • Scipio

Exactly. Boobs aren’t the only factor that warrants an M rating when it comes to the ESRB.

          • MrTyrant

Well you can’t “pregnant” the girls in Senran Kagura but in Conception you can do something similar. Maybe they thought about this but didn’t bother mention it.

          • Arcana Drill

but you can pregnant your wife in Harvest moon games, and it’s for all ages, and in conception the women dont get really “pregnant”.

          • Scipio

Same think in Fire Emblem: Awakening. Not sure how it’s handled in Harvest Moon, but it FE:A, once you get married, you’re kid comes from the future.

          • MrTyrant

But with actual fanservice they would asume it’s a dangerous combination.

          • Scipio

True, I think the suggestion of intimacy is what raised eyebrows.

          • Kumiko Akimoto

Yes that’s why this surprises me though it might just be a bit bumped up in fanservice then it’s predecessor, like how shinovi versus would definitely be a m rating because they bumped senran kugaru’s fanservice by like 10X

      • idrawrobots

That still surprises me. It sounds to me like this has more blood on people, and perhaps that is why this is different.

        • [S]unjay

          This barely has blood.

      • taekk

Then I guess the best explanation is human bias. This game should probably be rated T for all intents and purposes based on the description as T is defined as:

May contain violence, suggestive themes, crude humor, minimal blood, simulated gambling and/or infrequent use of strong language.

      • nonscpo

It deserved the T rating there wasnt anything about the game that merited an M rating

    • FivePointedTheStar

Oh, yeah. I agree with you. It’s very well known that American “standards” about extreme violence are completely okay, but even the slightest hint or expectation of nudity is sneered upon. I’ve talked to people across nations and they think our VG ratings system is outright weird. As weird as theirs, in different ways.

      • Scipio

Extreme violence isn’t excusable as well, other wise Manhunt 2 would not have been rated AO and people wouldn’t be shouting in the streets about anything Rockstar decides to publish.

        • Shippoyasha

Manhunt series is a freaking classic. Absolutely doesn’t patronize the players for its violence. Games should be way more free to express themselves.

          • Scipio

I agree, loved the first especially.

        • taekk

But our tolerance level is different. As case in point, many M-rated violent games are rated Cero Z in Japan. Over here, no one bats an eye at a game like Ryse and yet the gaming “media” gets all super offended at games like Valhalla Knights 3 and Killer is Dead.

          • Scipio

That’s because the gaming media is a joke and in no way reflects every single individual video game fan in the west. Just because one gaming journalist is offended over some non-issues, does not make them right.

          • taekk

Totally agree with you there. Gaming media is pretty much a joke.

    • Firekitty

The unfortunate result of a culture built by a group of people who left 1600’s England because it was *too liberal for them*.

But I THINK people are slowly starting to realize how silly this attitude is? Just based on conversations I’ve had with coworkers with brats or grandbrats running around; once you explain your position to them they typically agree that mild sexual content like this shouldn’t be in the same ratings category as, ya’know, graphically tearing someone limb from limb…

Really, the ratings system needs an overhaul.

    • tubers

I’m guessing because these are mostly suggestive w/ what Americans typically perceive as underage girls.

Then again, I am not an American media enthusiast so IDK if they have TV series about very suggestive underage sex.

      • KnifeAndFork

Well video game speaking, many Western made games have sexuality and even nudity in them though they rarely try to blur the lines in suggestive underage sex or nudity. Most females in games expressing sex or nudity are clearly depicted as adults.

Otherwise we’d of had an Ellie shower scene in The Last Of Us

        • Landale

It’s not so much that western games avoid blurring that line, so much as western culture has it’s own line that in general simply seems to prefer to equate bust size with age, often ignoring any other physical signs of age.
You make something that’s suggestive or more with sexuality or nudity for something that’s clearly a child and not simply flat you’re going to piss people off no matter where you’re at.

      • M’iau M’iaut

We don’t. Nor do we have shows focusing on knocking girls up for shits and giggles. At the end of the day, rating this M will do nothing to impact sales.

  • TheExile285

Was honestly expecting a T rating.

    • British_Otaku

ESRB needs one more rating to be honest, not just to match Britain which I have no bias towards honest but this and Ace Attorney being listed with Grand Theft Auto V is super silly.

      • M’iau M’iaut

It has been discussed, but I think the question becomes on what side of M do you put it. Yes, something like Conception or Persona 3-4 may be better treated as more a T+ with a focus on the ‘adult guidance’ — but by still having the MATURE rating above you know what the kids will want.

On the other hand, putting something above M (not talking AO here) or creating a separate M rating based off more adult dramatic/sexual content, creates an understanding that real live adults play video games. And that mature content in games does not only mean CoD or GTA.

        • Josué

I always wondered why there’s E+10 (which is ridiculous) but there’s no T+ or something different to M.

      • Scipio

        That would be E10.

        • British_Otaku

It isn’t. I wasn’t specific, but PEGI have 3, 7, 12, 16 and 18. I find 3-12 to be really exchangable for the most part, but the gap between 12/T and M/18 is pretty huge.

I’m looking for an T16 or something, I don’t think Ace Attorney belongs there as well and there are numerous games aiming for Conception’s zone which got T ratings. There can’t really be enough ratings or degrees for all video games, and given that American and Canada have different laws and policies across them it is even more crazy, but it would be some sort of start.

          • Scipio

I think it’s fair. E10 was brought up specifically for that age group which you mentioned. I also thought a T rating meant older teens as I grew up, however the concept of ratings seems to be only applicable for Japanese games these days. Everyday, more and more Western developers seem to want to hit an M rating, and less games are primary aimed at young gamers. The fact that AA was rated M did strike me as odd, however the concept of ratings flies out the window when you are letting young kids play these games. I believe the ratings should be taken as advice, rather than as a rule. By no means should one think that just because it’s M it solidifies that there is a specific audience for it.

That’s AO, and only eroge gets AO.

      • Shippoyasha

The way ratings system aims to punish games for content enrages me. They should simply be a warning tag for uninformed people, not a metric to slap at a games for having risky content. Too bad too many gamers, gaming journalism and game stores misunderstand and misuse game ratings. Hence why AO is the touch of death. Much like the way adult ratings are a death penalty for Hollywood movies.

  • Greg

I say it’s understandable why it got a M rating but I would personally give it a 16+ rating if it were me and probably no lower than that. Also can’t wait till this is released :)

  • harmonyworld

All those thing dictate an M rating
not even shocked because it’s right

  • Anna Scruton

Excuse me as I laugh at the stupidity of the ESRB rating system.

  • MrSirFeatherFang

    Neptunia Mk2 & Ar Tonelico 3

    >Cousin: Why do these games have M ratings?

He will question me once I get this… although the title of the game is pretty self-explanatory xD

    • Arcana Drill

Woaw! AT3 had a M rating in merica? the copy that i have (european) have a rating of 12 on PEGI!

      • karldeck

That is a recurring problem in europe that every game that is rated M in america is constantly changed to pegi 16 or 12 (which is T and E 10+ in A).

  • Highasthesky

For every reason stated i WILL buy this game =)

  • Learii

is this game is first person when you exploring dungeons?

    • British_Otaku

Nope, it is a 3rd person RPG like one of the Tales of games and you get locked into strategy positions while in combat. You get to see all of the characters run around and all of them fight, not that I have anything against Etrian Odyssey, just can’t complete the first game. >_>

      Review of Japanese 3DS release:

      • MrTyrant

I just don’t like that the childs are just like random soldiers you recruit in other RPG. They don’t have actual dialogues or event because they aren’t characters in the game.

        • British_Otaku

I’ve been playing Attack on Titan on the 3DS and think that game would have benefited a lot from more characterisation on for the fodder too. Valkyria Chronicles and Fire Emblem do it so well.

In the case of this game as I don’t think the demo touched on it, according to the review anyway, the children are supposed to be leveled then used as a resource so it might had been a waste to mkae them have a lot of events and dialogue when they might not be available in the next hour because you want to improve school facilities.

        • KnifeAndFork

          Child endangerment!

      • Learii

lol ok that good because I not into the games like Etrian Odyssey or Magic & Dragons

        • KnifeAndFork

Lost Heroes looked cool as does Persona Q

          • Learii

lol I agree but too bad Lost Heroes never was localized

  • TheGioG

Aww yeah, day one preganc- I mean preorder!
Just putting this out there; I won’t be playing this game just for the sake of my health. I’m playing this game for the ladies.

    • God

That a meme or something? Sorry for the stupid question, but i’m preparing armaggedon and i don’t have time to spend on the internet recently.

  • ZnTxn

Not surprising at all. Still weird that they didn’t write about the “touch communication” mechanic.

I remember there was a part in the first game where the scorpio maiden was explaining this and you could touch her breast in that tutorial. >_>

    • God

      “Touch” mechanic?

  • I find a strangely high level of entertainment from these blurbs from the ESRB, where we get all these random lines out of context in one grand and hilarious Youtube Poop-esque montage.
From the past year my favorite had to be the rating summary for Sonic Lost Worlds, which launched all those random memes for a time… (“YOU’RE GOING HOME IN A BOX!!!”)

  • icecoffemix

“You have giant boobs!” “I think your breasts are very lovely . . . Um, well…Their shape is…I think boys would like them.”

    Shakespearean dialogue!

  • Phoenixian Sama

wtf? this is getting a western release? Damn! If I had a US 3DS, I’d have pre ordered this already! >o<

  • Scipio

Did you guys hear Dark Sous II is rated T? Funny how that works.

    • idrawrobots

      Really, that is actually disappointing.

      • Scipio

To be fair, Dark Souls didn’t really warrant an M rating. There was no gore and the violence wasn’t graphic. Suggestive themes only went as far a Gwynevere, and she is just an illusion. No foul language as well. Demon’s Souls had the part with the undead fetuses, so it might have raised it up. I’m sure we’ll get the same themes and content as the predecessor in Dark Souls II.

    • MrTyrant

Yeah because those monster and bosses are just too cute. I am serious.

      • Scipio

        Asylum Demon is my waifu.

  • buddyluv324

Eh….not a big deal for me to be honest. It wouldnt have made much of a different on me purchasing the game if it was rated E. I’m still looking forward in giving this game a playthrough.

  • Funny cause I just pre-ordered mine yesterday. A little surprised by the M rating as there are much worse things out there, but whatever lol. Just happy that we’re getting it =^_^=

  • Kumiko Akimoto

Well the conception scene is a little bit more umm sexualized then the first game but i didn’t think it was that bad on the implied sex side but maybe it’s causer their’s different outfits this time around

  • So “suggestive poses” and mentioning breasts is the same level as stabbing someone in the throat in slow motion?

  • DarthSithZero

    M for Majestic game

    • xXDGFXx

      M… for MANLY.

    • I thought it’s for mating…

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

    sex and child abuse lol

  • Kaien

    M as in My waifu

  • 3DS or Vita. Decisions, decisions!

    • Eric Harris

I’m going Vita because of the OLED display. I like 3D but considering the game has a lot of beautiful 2D portraits during dialogue that’s gonna look real sharp on the Vita.

    • Alter

Vita version in a heartbeat. Better graphics, better controls, trophies (especially platinum) for extra challenges.

      • Do you know how difficult the game would be to platinum?

    • idrawrobots

Going 3DS, because I like the two screens.

    • Anesia Hunter

graphics wise i’d go ps vita route but if you already have a 3ds just pick up the 3ds version or double dip and have the best of both worlds.

    • Sigfried Silverblade

I’m going Vita for better graphics and bigger screen.

    • EtherealEarth

I am going with Vita because it’s the only platform I have = =~

      • Pandakids09 .

I know that feel! :( lol

    • Chido55

      Vita, same reason as EtherealEarth

  • Junko Enoshima

Not too sure why it’s rated M. The babies are made by putting energy from the main character and a Maiden into a device.

Pretty sure that’s not how most people give birth…

    • buddyluv324

Tell that to the SJW lol!

    • Kelohmello

I dunno, I think there’s probably a scene where they HOLD HANDS. The ESRB probably just didn’t mention it because it was too lewd for them. That alone would have earned it an M rating though.

  • SetzerGabbiani

Puritanical nimrods. Interesting that sex STILL carries a greater stigma than violence.

    • Just Tim

“Victorian nimrods. Stigmatization of sex is the reason why Jack the Ripper, serial murderer AND rapist, is Victorian England’s biggest criminal of the concurrent time period. Wankers.”

Oh, back on topic, I’ll definitely aim to get this.

    • Kelohmello

It’s one of the most fascinating contradictions in modern society. I’ll never understand it.

  • Romored

    European release when?
None said anything about it, until now.
    I’m starting to worry.

  • Slickyslacker

Well, at least my parents don’t care about the ESRB ratings of my games anymore.

I just wish I had a Vita, for the sake of a higher-quality display.

  • new_tradition

If there’s no sex, why can’t I make babies with guys? >3>

  • Demeanor

Never even considered age ratings in gaming, but still, I think they went a bit far; guess the magical star children weren’t so magical after all XD
Gonna get the game for sure (it was April, right?), it’s on my hit list with all the awesome awesomeness due out in February and – shiver – MARCH. March is a real killer.

  • shuyai

i want to try the Classmating system in real life too

  • Sigfried Silverblade

I for one am very glad the game is being released around here.
    It’s a small victory, even rated M.
Back on PSP and DS days, those games had no chance at all of coming here.

    • Shippoyasha

Either they wouldn’t have released them or we would have gotten hideously censored and modified abominations of the 90s and early 2000s.

  • Impressionnant

Why would they localise it as Conception 2, if they didn’t release Conception 1? They should’ve localised it as Conception: Subtitle.

    • GameTaco

That’s what I’m wondering, too. If this one is highly successful, will Atlus/SEGA step back and localize the previous? Maybe hold out for a remake/enhanced port?

  • Attribule

I’m surprised a title like this even made it to a Nintendo platform considering all of their strict “laws”.

Anyway, looking forward to getting this on the Vita. Playing Persona 4 Golden really sold me on how great vibrant and sleek graphics look on the Vita as opposed to the 3DS.

    • Arrei

Nintendo hasn’t really had strict restrictions on what third parties can put on their system in a long time. Most obviously, the recent Senran Kagura games. The Wii had an Onechanbara game. And there was a strip poker game on the Wii eshop. STRIP POKER.

      • KnifeAndFork

BMX XXX GameCube version was the only one to have in censored topless nudity

        • British_Otaku

The Xbox version also had uncensored topless nudity, what you mean to say is that the PlayStation 2 version is the only version where the hardware owner stepped in to make sure it was censored on their platform out of the three.

  • Renaldi Saputra

well, meanwhile SK Burst is T

  • Yan Zhao

Yeah, I’d imagine a game with “making babies” as its premise would garner an M rating.

    • Kelohmello

Yeah but the baby making isn’t what gains it said rating.

      • miju

        This is what amuses me.

    • Landale

The entire Agarest series got a T rating.

      • M’iau M’iaut

Yes, but all it took was one too upset at the situation Gamestop corporate officer to yank em into the backroom.

  • Kai2591

    ESRB format composition.
    Always so funny.

  • Isaac Sanchez
