NIS America have released another trailer for Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc, ahead of the game’s upcoming release in February.

Danganronpa will be available on February 11th in North America and February 14th in Europe.

  • Junko Enoshima

Wow, Monobear is an absolutely brilliant antagonist.

Jokes aside, this is a really weird localization. Blackened??? And they spoiled the first death, too.

    • TheCynicalReaper

He’s also quite the narcissist, isn’t he, Junko? haha

    • Amagidyne

Not only that, there’s a pretty big spoiler for ‘Detention’ right at the beginning of the trailer. And yeah, ‘Blackened’? What even is that? Would villain or something similar have been too much to ask for?

    • Muffum

Blackened is a pretty literal translation, since they just use the words “black” and “white” for the guilty and innocent parties in the original, but it still sounds really awkward.

    • Mirai

I feel sorry for anyone who comes into the comment section who is a newcomer, but then again i’m just as bad.

    • Nightmare637

I like Blackened, It sounds…IDK it just sounds “curse like” like your marked for death or something.

      • Kasuga Yuki

Blackened…… seems pretty similiar to “darkening” in Corpse Party series.

  • revenent hell

Eh, personally I don’t feel it spoiled anything. And saying blackened is probably better than villain since mono takes that role I do believe….. Blackened is probably appropriately used in the context of the game. Like a blackened soul and such, to me it makes sense.

  • Muffum

We hear a lot more voice acting in this trailer, but it’s still pretty… eeeeeeeeeeeeh. A lot of the characters just don’t sound like they’re very into it, Togami especially (and not even in an “I’m too good for this and you’re all beneath me,” like would fit his character; it just sounds like the actor stumbled into the sound booth and came across the script at random).

And Monokuma tries to go for the contrast between a cutesy voice and a killer intent in a different way than the Japanese version, which would be fine, but the actor just slips into a normal speaking voice a lot of the time. It’s not even used for a contrast between the two voices; it just sounds like the actor couldn’t keep up the squeaky performance.

    • ZekeFreek

Or maybe he was trying to make it a bit less grating. You have to listen to Monokuma a lot afterall.

    • Phoenix

“(and not even in an “I’m too good for this and you’re all beneath me,”
like would fit his character; it just sounds like the actor stumbled
into the sound booth and came across the script at random).”

This is 100% not the case. Out of all the actors on the game, he actually knew the *most* about it going in and had been following the game before the role was even offered to him. His style might play a little weird in the trailer, but in the game itself I think it works.

  • TheCynicalReaper

The trailer DOES have a spoiler, but it’s very quick and has nothing contextual about it so it’s okay. NISA was clearly trying to emulate what the Danganronpa demo did: trick people into thinking so-and-so is the killer, hence the “spoiler” that Makoto killed “her”.

-That being said, I’m a bit annoyed the comment section is disabled, though since even Square-Enix has taken to doing that I can’t begrudge them for it.
-Monokuma sounds weird at first. Robotic. I think that’s because it’s lines of dialogue quickly snipped together, where in the game it needs to be continued by pressing “X”, you know?
-Bryce Paperbrook is still good as Naegi, my favorite choice, and every other VA seems to fit the characters really well. Otaku-King’s voice is dead-on and they nailed Toko’s jerky/stuttering voice! Though as great as Monokuma’s voice is it seems to go in and out of a good mimic of the original’s voice…
I only have an issue with Togami’s voice, but to be honest I think it will just take some getting used to. It doesn’t sound out of character, so it’s alright.

Just my two cents. I will say that the trailer felt a little…limp in comparison to the previous one, but maybe that’s just their choice to reuse the same trial music for the whole trailer. I don’t know. Still like what I see and I DID buy the LE.

OH! And “Blackened” is an odd choice instead of “killer”, but maybe there’s a reason they chose this instead. Or maybe it was another mandated thing from Chunsoft, like “Monokuma”

    • Herok♞

Well seeing as the game is a mystery I can’t blame them since people are dicks and spoilers would abound, if they left comments open..

      • Kumiko Akimoto

I’ll just tell people what I was told, anyone can die and a lot of theme do and chihiro just has a deep sounding voice for effect cause that’s not usually done for girls like her.
Ohh and touko is completely normal just a normal introvert

      • TheCynicalReaper

Considering THIS comment section, I think that’s a good point.
Just wish Youtube’s “recommended videos” section didn’t spoil everything!

    • Detrimont

the trailer on this page was reuploaded by ishaan, whcih is why it’s blocked, the NISA upload the comment section isn’t blocked.

      • TheCynicalReaper

Oh I see. That changes things, then.
But wow, two comments in and already a spoiler on the vid.
Why must the fanbase of mystery games feel the need to whisper and shout revelations?

    • Glenn De Boer

Well technically he always said “Kuro” in the Japanese version so I suppose that “Blackened” may be a translation for that…

  • Herok♞

For the people below who say there are spoilers its only something those who play would know, I am going in blind and don’t know anything more then what I did before.

    • revenent hell

The spoilers are in fact coming from the comments….. I was going to say that before but….
Not knowing two bits about how the story plays out I didn’t find anything spoilerish besides the people stating so.

    • God

I didn’t have any prior knowleadge, and i refuse to read the comments since i may get spoiled, but i already know the first victim, have an educated guess on who did it, and another guess at the truth behind the whole thing (but i based it only on the first and last 30 seconds of the video, so i may be wrong, and what i saw may not be as symbolic as i think.)

  • Kumiko Akimoto

Why does monokuma sound so mechanical? Like he’s struggling to get his lines out or something

    • Detrimont

well… monokuma is a robot… but i know what you mean

      • Kumiko Akimoto

False alarm monokuma is a real bear from another dimension who’s not being controlled by someone at all.

      • Kumiko Akimoto

On another note listening to the class trial they don’t sound bad just unemotional and it’s kinda boring to watch them talk. Usually I’m all for normal sounding anime characters but maybe not the whole cast.

        • Detrimont

it’ll probably sound better in game… probably

          • Kumiko Akimoto

Possibly but I’ll be using the Japanese voice for familiarity sake

          • Detrimont

i’ve already done a playthrough in japanese(psp ver.), so i’ll be doing english first(i’ll probably do school mode in japanese though)

          • Kumiko Akimoto

I would do that and i usually do that when ever something comes over but I’m not confident in these voices and I have bad standing with nisa on that so I can’t bring myself to try.

I just checked out the comments for the nisa upload and lol someone said “You know a dub is bad when the abridged voices sound better”

Yes that sums up my feelings if they had sounded more like that I would be more sure.

          • Detrimont

so far, from what i’ve seen of some of the abridged(s), most of these voices are better(abridged versions sound extremely put on and fake)

          • Kumiko Akimoto

Usually honestly that’s why I can get into most of them but the danganronpa abridged has comprehensible voices and they sound like they could be professional voice actors just about.

          • Detrimont

really?!, i think togami sounds terrible

          • Kumiko Akimoto

Really? I thought his voice fit for how much i hated him during the first half of the game, pompous douche fits it but the nisa voice actor they got for him isn’t bad he just needs to bring the douche.

          • Kumiko Akimoto

Really? I thought his voice fit and it reminded me of the reason I hated him so much during the first part of the game. He sounds like a pompous douche which is how it should be. The nisa voice actor they got for him isn’t bad but he needs to bring the douche, i want to try and keep myself from strangling the vita in response to listening to him.

          • Detrimont

let me explain a bit more, it’s terrible, but it works for a abridged (or parody) series, it’s just that it’s so overacted, that it wouldn’t work in a proper dub

    • PersonaBreaker

I’m pretty sure those lines are taken straight from the game itself, where you have to press ‘X’ to keep the text moving. His lines were taken and just put together, but it still sounds like how it would from the game itself.

  • Laith Rem

Monokuma’s voice irritates me, so that’s something done well. It talks like a character in a children show you see, and those irritate me. The others, I can’t judge since we got just snippets, but Naegi sounds so normal and common and I like that.

  • Mirai

What NISA shows in this trailer is no different than what Spike showed in their original trailers so that’s nothing to complain about and if you’re really that bothered then don’t watch this video.

    • Kumiko Akimoto

The only thing they spoiled in the japanese trailers was the first culprits death

      • Mirai

check out this trailer the footage is pretty much the same as NISA’s:

        • TheCynicalReaper

THANK YOU! NISA has been promoting DR almost exactly like Spike did via trailers. People who shout “spoiler! What the frack, NISA?!” need to realize they’ve been doing very well sticking to the same strategies as Spike.

They just don’t have a fake-out demo to put out, which is understandable.

  • Monokuma’s english VA sounds slightly like another certain video game bear character….

  • 07thCrow

This trailer has me kinda worried about the english audio… Leon, Touko, and Hifumi are great; a lot like how I imagined they’d sound in english! Not sure about how I feel about Naegi’s voice, but I do think Bryce Papenbrook is the right actor. Monokuma and Togami (and I think I heard Kirigiri) sound strange though. I don’t know if NIS America used sound bites straight from the game and patched them together, or if they did a seperate recording for this trailer, but they sound awful – like the actors are just reading the script or something. I’m pretty disappointed with Chihiro’s voice too since, aside from Monokuma, Chihiro is my favorite character. I’m glad there’s dual audio, but I was excited about the english voices too – still buying it, of course!

    • Detrimont

personally, i like chihiro’s english voice better(spoiler following for someone who hasn’t played the game), since it actuallly sounds feminine, whereas the the jap voice sounds distinctly male to me(and thus, when i was playing it originally, i was wondering why they thought he was a girl)

  • ThatGuy3190_7

I love Monokuma’s laugh at 2:38. Evilishly adorable.

  • KuroNathan

ok I’ll admit, I never actually seen anything danganroppa but now that I see its an investigation/interrogation mystery VN I’ll give it a chance

  • Tetris

    I can’t wait for this. :D

  • I’ll admit I didn’t like Monokuma’s voice until I heard the insane laughter. That part he NAILED.

Also, I’m amazed this trailer spoils some pretty big stuff. >_>

  • Mugiwara

Is just me or Touko just sound like Clementine from The Walking Dead(Telltale)? I mean the voice not the way she talks.

  • otakumike

    February 11 can’t come soon enough….

  • Ian Caronia

Actually, I did a comparison vid and it’s obvious NISA actually does care about how this game is marketed. It has less spoilers than the Japanese marketing, even though it doesn’t have a demo to fool gamers. Not like it would work anyway, what with most players already knowing at least the first case of the game, unlike when the original PSP Dangan came out.

It’s clear that NISA truly cares about Danganronpa, and since they’ve not only been open and explained everything about what changes they’ve made, as well as their coolness to Project Zetsubou, I don’t think this will turn into another “Esty Dee” fiasco. This is going to be great

  • Juuu

I must say, I’m shocked people are complaining about Togami’s casting choice–I think it’s pretty spot-on and more or less how I pictured an English version of the character, and furthermore the actor choice makes me actually wanna play the dubbed version. It’s great to see some new talent casted in big projects like this! c:
