Super Smash Bros. Director Gives Example Of Intricate Character Match-ups

By Ishaan . January 30, 2014 . 8:30am

The new Super Smash Bros. games will take a large number of factors into account during face-offs between different characters. Series director Masahiro Sakurai provided one such example today, via Miiverse.

Alongside the above screenshot, Sakurai posted on Miiverse: “Both Link and Pit use bows, but when they fire simultaneously, their arrows meet and cancel out closer to Pit. Besides attack power and projectile speed, there are many elements that affect tactics, such as accuracy, vulnerability after attacking, and even seemingly unrelated features like a character’s physical abilities.”

Super Smash Bros. is in development for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS.

I can tell this is going to be my favorite SSB.

    • fairysun

Newer SSB always be my favorite one so far.

i can tell i won’t. the roster got a nice shakeup from melee to brawl. young link, dr mario, and pichu left, ganondorf changed considerably. the other characters also but with subtlety. so having brawl and melee were like two sides of a neat coin. this new game is looking to be a continuation of brawl, as opposed to an evolution of smash as a whole.

it looks to me that a lot of work is going into this game

  • Minos

That means Link’s Arrow was buffed and its faster now.

I can live with that, Link needs as much buffs as possible.

    • Linhua

… I shall agree with this.

… I really like Link… but I didn’t enjoy him much in Brawl.

    • Sperium3000

It’s probably still chargeable like before and in the above example Link fired it fully charged.

Samus as well, I still don’t understand why she was so nerfed from Melee to Brawl.

Pit: Hey, Link! Prepare me to link my arrow into your body! *Strikes pose*

Link: Dear Nayru, man. Were you like this in Brawl?

    • Suzaku Kururugi

      Link; Hya! Hya! Hya!

  • Ali

How I loved Melee…I remember hurrying home from school everyday on summer just to play Melee through the whole night

    • NimbusStev

Melee was the first game I ever bought brand new with my own money. I would spend hours and hours playing it after school too!

    • Anthony Birken

      Melee was my pride~

  • Nate

I’m starting to doubt this is coming out this year.

    • Chaos_Knight

It most definitely will because 2014 is the 15th Anniversary of Smash Bros. and why not celebrate it with this new installment. I’m pretty sure even Sakurai wants the game to release this year too.

He said on Twitter that ‘officially’ the release will be in 2014

  • Ren Yuumei

would like to see some more sword parrying

    • God

I would like them to take it to DBZ levels and let you parry the parry of the parry that parried the parry your parry parried.

  • NimbusStev

I sure hope they come up with a subtitle for the game before release. I’m getting tired of calling it “the new Super Smash Bros.”

For all we know, the definitive titles are:

Super Smash Bros. 4 (for) 3DS
Super Smash Bros. 4 (for) Wii U

      Pun intended :P

      • k.b.a.

        its brawl 2

        • Guest

While, yes, due this being the direct sequel to Brawl, SSB4 is going to carry some elements from it; Sakurai has made clear that he is trying to conciliate elements from Melee. Also, as we have seen from the reveals he has been doing, new mechanics are a priority in his design for this game, so it’ll be a proper entry however you look at it. But as it may be, it’s too early for us to judge, let’s wait to the game release to create an consequent opinion of it! :D
