To celebrate The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, Nintendo have released The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past on the Wii U Virtual Console in North America today.

At the same time, they’ve also brought The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Anniversary Edition back to the Nintendo eShop for 3DS. This game can be downloaded for free until February 2nd, after which it will be taken off the eShop again.

Four Swords Anniversary Edition includes a new singleplayer mode and will unlock new stages and abilities after you’ve beaten the game.

  • BaoZakeruga

    “Free” you say??? :D

  • Taylor Davis

    Free?! FREE!? Well that’s a nice treat!~

  • David García Abril

Looks like it’s on the American eShop only.

Let’s hope the European one will follow soon.

    • Zoozbuh

I really hope so 3: I missed out on it the first time round, and I was weirdly JUST reading about it yesterday. Would be super unfair if it’s US-only though.

  • Serge

Four Swords for free! Single Player! Yuuhu~

  • Normally I’d have something clever prepared for this, but I’m just gonna go with a ‘hell yea’

  • D. Collins

  • Eder García

a free game is always welcome

  • British_Otaku

Only for a few days again and not on the Japanese or European eShops yet. What a shame… I thought they wised up and made it available forever.

Why should anything Nintendo themselves feel like giving out for free be locked behind time limits? This isn’t Super Mario Deluxe which is available later on or even on another system if I feel like getting retro.

    • Armane

They could at least give us the option of buying it.

  • Anewme…Again

Is this the same version that they gave us last year ?

    • John Diamond

not everyone got the game though, there must be a lot of adopters from christmas

      • Anewme…Again

I’m just wondering if it is the same game, if it is different i will download it again.

        • John Diamond

personally, i’d get it anyways. and check it our for youself. it’s free so it shouldn’t hurt. tell me if it is though

          • neo_firenze

There’s nothing new to download. I already had it on my 3DS, and checking the game page for the currently available version shows as already purchased/downloaded for me.

  • Shane Guidaboni

Is this the one they gave through the Ambassador program?

    • SupaPhly

      that was Minish Cap

  • TheGioG

Pretty damn sweet that this is being offered for free again.
BRB, preparing for misadventures with color coded brethren once more…

    • Chaos_Knight

I would have circled the Bunny Hood in red.

  • Max

Hopefully Japan gets it again too.

  • Kaihedgie

I remember this game bein’ packaged with the GBA remake of ALttP but I sadly never got to play it even though my sister had it too. We had no Link Cable >:

  • 하세요

Four Swords was fun. Only problem was how delicate the connection was. If you had friends and they moved even an inch, “connection dropped.”

  • Freud_Hater

Free game? I’m intrigued, yet suspicious…

    • Kaihedgie

      No strings attached :T

    • BossBullet

I got the game one or two years ago.. So no string attached :)

  • Crevox

  • Mike G. Moran

Nintendo, stop with this crap. Just make it free and stop taking it down. This isn’t some masterpiece of a game that Zelda fans are going to buy the console for. It’s just going to be a huge annoyance to them that you punish them for not buying a 3DS at their own pace.

    • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Its an old DSi game they use for promotion. Lol.

    • Nana

Ah, the usual whiners come out of the woodworks, crying about free games.
Nobody is punished – the game will just be free again later, like last year.

  • Barrylocke89

Sweet, I actually own a 3DS now so I’ll check it out!

  • new_tradition

Never played a Zelda game before in my life, but I guess that’s gonna change. Free is free~

    • Tg

      Enjoy! :)

    • NBXX

this game is different from the regular 2D zelda games but still is a good game to enjoy and even better is free.

    • katzedan

Hope this makes you want to play other games in this series, like Ocarina of Time and Link Between Two Worlds … they’re great games! :D

  • Chow

    Generic positive comment inserted!

  • I misread that as “Four Swords Adventure”… aw.

  • Suriel Cruz

    downloading… ^ ^

  • hazelnut1112

I was happy I got this again for free since I missed out the first time it was available. Although I didn’t have a 3DS at the time.

    • NBXX

      is actually a DSi title

  • XaviIniesta

I hope it becomes available in Europe too.
A while ago there was a campaign to get a free Mario 3D Land in EU, but it didn’t include Scandinavia, which is where I live…

  • Don’t forget about EU, please!

  • A game where you play with your friends in the same room talking and having fun while you play – that’s the core of Nintendo social gaming, not online play, not Miiverse.

Glad they periodically keep giving away this game to remind people.

    • Fox

That’s only the “core” because they’re too inept to bother incorporating online multiplayer to their games.

This is not a good thing.

  • Tiduas

I really want this on the Japanese E-shop as well :(
