Sonic Boom Is The Third Nintendo-Exclusive Sonic Game, And It Looks… Different

Last year, we reported that Sonic the Hedgehog was getting a new CG-animated cartoon series, titled Sonic Boom. The cartoon is scheduled to air later this year, and Sega are also going to be publishing a new Sonic game based on it, for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS, also titled Sonic Boom.

The Sonic Boom cartoon will consist of 52 11-minute episodes, and the game will serve as a prequel to the TV show. Sega say the Sonic Boom game will be a different experience from past Sonic titles in that it will focus on collaborative gameplay. It’s being developed by Big Red Button Entertainment (on Wii U) and Sanzaru (on 3DS), and is the third game in an exclusive deal with Nintendo. (The first two being Sonic Lost World and the new Olympics game)

Sonic Boom will introduce exploration and combat to the mix of features, as well as a new “Enerbeam” tether mechanic, although beyond these reveals, Sega haven’t detailed exactly how the game is going to play.

Additionally, merchandise based on the Sonic Boom franchise will be available as well, in the form of new toys by TOMY, including action figures, plushies, vehicles and more. Sega will further broaden the merchandising possibilities by launching a licensing program to include publishing, accessories, food, health and more. Needless to say, this sounds like a big deal for the company.
