Sword Art Online’s Kirito Joins Dengeki Bunko Fighting Climax

By Sato . February 9, 2014 . 9:18pm

Kirito, the protagonist of Sword Art Online, will be a playable character in Dengeki Bunko Fighting Climax, Sega have revealed via Dengeki Online. Kirito will join his companion, Asuna, who was previously revealed as a playable character in the game, and will be capable of dual-wielding “Climax Arts”.

Similar to when things got pretty serious in the anime and novel, Kirito will be able to activate his dual-wield mode in Dengeki Bunko Fighting Climax.

In the above image, we see Kirito spinning his sword around for what looks like some sort of defensive move. Dengeki also points out that the support character, Leafa, seems to have some different moves that could be related to her being paired up with her brother Kirito.

Finally, here’s a look at Kirito using his dual-wield swordskill for a Climax Arts super move.

Dengeki Bunko Fighting Climax will be launching in spring 2014 in Japanese arcades.

And he will be OP as fuck :3

    • God

He has TWO swords, not one, not two shortswords either, TWO FREAKING LONGSWORDS! Explain to me how a character with two LONGSWORDS can be anything else than OP.

      • Kazekage Gaara

        Mom?! o.o

        • God

          Errr… No, just no.

      • darkbartz

When the competition includes a man that shrugs off getting a pen forced all the way through his palm, a girl who can shoot fire from great ranges and another girl who can casually shoot railguns with coins and make Magneto look like a chump, I can see how a character with two longswords can be not OP.

      • 하세요

A character having two long swords is far from anything new, let alone OP. Anyone with magic pretty much owns that as it still requires you to be up close.

Hell, a gunslinger could take someone that dual-wields swords out with ease.

  • Rayhan PromisedGallery

One slot is wasted for the most boring invicible Gary Stu in history. He will get hax cheat from Sega director and OP enough to oneshot everything.

    • Shippoyasha

At least be happy you can beat him up if you dislike him. I think he fits pretty good as a fighting game character. Maybe they can add in .Hack charas and maybe even Shiroe and Akatsuki from Log Horizon for a dream match.

      • God

Damn, i hope log horizon gets a spot in this game…

        • DyLaN

          Tip: Dengeki Bunko Fighting Climax.

      • DyLaN

LH is not published by Dengeki Bunko. .hack is under CC2.

        • Shippoyasha

True. It’s just a distant dream scenario for now. If they collaborate with more companies, then maybe it can happen then.

    • DyLaN

I think that a weird way to mispell Ichika.

  • dark-kyon

first kuroneko puts in his place, now kirito is in and his fans are soo tsunderes for him, this game keep delivering, now if they can put sayaka of strike the blood i am in.

  • Akemi Homura

I’d rather see other series’ get the spotlight before seeing SAO get two. As long as he’s fun to play as, and isn’t OP for no reason, I can’t really complain.

Though I can’t really say much about how he’ll turn out, considering I have yet to go anywhere near SAO.

    • Touma

pretty good if you don’t go in expecting a master piece. which is kind of a depressing fact in itself :/. such high hopes. though you’ll be spared the dissapointment going into it knowing what to expect. that is if you watch it.

  • Muffum

Ick. I understand why SAO got two reps, but I still don’t like that it did, both because there are so many series that haven’t gotten one rep yet and because I just don’t like SAO at all.

    • God

I liked the concept a lot, but the characters (and everything after the death game)… Not so much.

      • Shippoyasha

The characters do grow though, after the current anime run. There are some pretty fun arcs coming up and they will animate them soon. Not the most intriguing characters, but they are cute and action is pretty good.

        • God

The action is nice, but i simply didn’t like the characters, most of them were WAY too cliche… Nor the “power of love”, nor the fact that they focus WAY too much on the “teenage romance factor”… That alone kinda ruined it for me, even though the concept of a death game was awesome.

          • Shippoyasha

Yeah, expecting a particularly deep story isn’t really the main draw. It’s just a show that focuses on childlike wonder and puppy loves. Which is pleasant enough if you don’t dissect it too much. But some coming arcs does have some solid moments coming up. IMO anyway.

          • DyLaN

The “power of love” thing is apparently justified in Alicization arc (or so I’m told, I just finished The Day After)

But seriously, the arcs after Fairy Dance is a testament of Reki improving as a writer (IMO) and Alicization is by far the longest/most ambitious arc atm. In fact, the harem aspect was toned down compare to the web novel ver believe it or not.

          • David García Abril

The thing is, even in the web novel the harem aspect wasn’t as big. In the first novel there isn’t any harem. Like, at all. Asuna is actually the only female character in the whole thing.

The harem was built up in the second novel and the Fairy Dance arc. And even then the harem aspect isn’t nearly that big. SAO haters blow it out of proportion, but REALLY think about the anime: the “harem” is only there for two episodes and a couple of moments when it’s played for laughs. The rest of the time it’s either a straight romance or a love triangle.

          • God

Sounds nice, i only got to the second half of the 4th novel until i said “what the fuck am i doing” to myself, and swiftly switched to “Log Horizon”… I might as well start reading SAO again with all the free time i’m having… after i finish Bravely Default and Danganronpa: Ace Attorney.

          • NeptuniasBeard

I didn’t even mind the romance, until Kirito’s sister wanted to bang him. That’s too much damn romance

          • Shippoyasha

To be fair, Kirito’s sister didn’t even realize it for a full arc. They both do realize in the story that their attraction is pretty risky. Not to mention it turns out they were cousins, not real siblings. It’s more of a forbidden attraction thing than any real romance. That element is blown way overboard by detractors of the show.

          • David García Abril

Yeah, I don’t understand why the romance in the SAO arc gets so much hate.

It’s a flawed romance, sure, but it’s nowhere near as bad as other anime romances that are constant (c***)tease and then go nowhere.

The thing with Suguha, on the other hand… I don’t think it’s because it’s “too much romance”. I think it’s because it presents itself as a love triangle, but we already know it’s doomed before it even starts, so it’s completely pointless.

But let’s be serious, most probably it’s only there because Kawahara wanted to cash in in the “imoto” trend.

        • Renaldi Saputra

not sure if they do grow, or just being plot devices or forced development

  • Shiki

I still don’t know why Sadao Mao isn’t playable. He’s fit for a fighting game! Why a support~
Maybe we’ll get Emi as playable?

    • Guest

THIS. I am saddened because Maou is totally fit for a fighting game! He can be like the Bang Shishigami or Phoenix Wright of the game, with a specialized bar below his HP! What does it do?

It’s the Fear Bar! It goes up with every hit you do on an opponent and when it reaches max, IT’S OVERLORD TIME BITCHES.

And for added awesome, his theme overrides the background music in this mode.

    • Fsteak

THIS. Maou is completely fit for a fighting game! He can like, have a specialized bar over his power bar!

What is it? The Fear Meter. With every hit he does on the opponent, it makes them scared and increases the meter. What happens when it fills up? OVERLORD MODE.His moveset gets an upgrade and he can deal a shit-ton of damage like this!

For added awesome, his theme overrides the background music throughout this mode! He’ll be like the Bang Shishigami or the Phoenix Wright of the game!

      • BalmungX

Maybe sometime they will notice the mistake and rework him into a playable character ,well a guy can dream right?

    • DyLaN

Popularity, I guess. That or they decide who will playable by using darts.

    • Yan Zhao

I jumped with joy when he was revealed to be in the game, then the hype died the moment it mentioned “support character” :

  • Fsteak

I want Ladd Russo in so I can squish his brains between my fingers LIKE I’M MAKING SAUSAAAAAGE!

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aaZdFQcKvjk

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/xxHiryuuxx Tohsaka

Great. Now I can practice making Chop Suey.

    • Shady Shariest

      Chop Suey?

edit: (From System of A Down music video: Chop Suey. Singer eating Chop Suey with fans. Chop Suey.)

  • Kornelious

Well now, doesn’t having Kirito in the game kinda undermine Asuna? Whateves, hope this gets a localization, it has many more recognizable faces than Aquapazza

    • Renaldi Saputra

this is an arcade game, seems quite impossible except it’s being ported into a console

      • Kornelious

Then it should be ported to consoles :)

  • DyLaN

I literally said “what” when I saw this. I guess this means its possible to have 2 PCs frm a series. Maybe playable Himeragi + Kujou is possible after all.

Hm…. I don’t think I had seen the insert art used here for Kirito be4. His character art is frm the cover of LN2 though.

  • Loli Summoner

OOOHHH snap, I bet the SOA fanboys and girls are screaming right now.

    • David García Abril

As you can see, the SAO haters are screaming even more…

      • Linhua

        … yeah what’s up with this anyway…?

… I watched the show one time all the way through and enjoyed it.

… then I moved onto other things… and after some time away… I come back to this kinda thing that seems to have been going on for a while now.

… what exactly is SAO getting so much hate for .-. ?

        • DragKudo

The show is not getting hate the people who hype up the show too much are getting the hate. People who say SAO is the greatest anime and better than other classics or recent animes are getting the hate. Loved the show but it went downhill in the second half of the season.

Some say it’s just a remake of .Hack series
People have different opinions so let them love/hate it.

          • David García Abril

Hmmm… Nope. It’s the show itself the one who receives the hate.

Although to be fair, the fandom doesn’t help…

        • Luke Blackwood

Classical example of people hating something just because other people hype it too much. There are tons of people who go just like OMG SAO IS THE BEST THING EVER MADE OMG OMG OMG and thus, there are people who MUST say it is the worst piece of trash ever made hurr hurr durr :/

          • Istillduno

So people don’t hate it because the main thing setting it aside from other MMO series (actual stakes outside the game) is lost between the first book and Gun Gale Online and that the side stories did their very best to turn it into standard harem bull****?

          • Luke Blackwood

I don’t personally feel that is a reason to HATE it. Granted, ALO is a way weaker arc than SAO. GGO is also a weaker arc. The only arc that actually stands to the SAO arc is Alicization but whatever.

But still, most people who think that would say that SAO is a decent anime with a bad second half. Those people pretty probably enjoyed the first half a bit and thus wouldn’t hate it.

        • David García Abril

Well, it was a show with an awesome premise, but eventually it went downhill to the point it became absolutely horrible, and at an incredible speed.

Most people say the turning point was the second arc (myself included. I was having a hard time believing it was even the same show!).

Other people say it was before, either around episode 10 (when the romance between Kirito and Asuna takes the spotlight) or episode 4 (when Kirito’s harem starts to show up).

However, SAO is far from being the first over-hyped anime that goes downhill, nor the first to have such levels of wish fulfillment or a protagonist with Gary Stu qualities (I’m looking at you, Ichigo Kurosaki!). Sure, it was a pity that such a great premise went to waste, and some scenes in the second half deserved a backlash, but did nothing to deserve such levels of resentment for so long…

The way some people talk about this anime, you would think that A1-Pictures and Reki Kawahara murdered their kittens and ate them, while making them watch.

  • katzedan

Nice! I hope with this they decide to bring news characters from the series they already used like for example, Accelerator or Sogiita from To Aru Majutsu no Index.
After all this game still lacks playable characters. At the moment we have 8 playable and 14 support characters, so I think it really needs some more :(

btw, Himeragi and Kojou with Natsuki, Kirasaka or Asagi as support when? :3

    • BalmungX

I want kojou to use REGULUS AURUM

  • Hagaren

Well, if there can be more than one playable character per series, I really hope Accelerator will be in this, especially seeing how Touma is only support.

  • Ni ~Algidus~

here we see how to waste a slot because gary st… popular character brings money.
Now put Accelerator or Toma as playable character. if stuff as SAO can get two playable characters the others franchises can too. Also expect Kirito to be a over powered character. Well at least Shizuo is playable

  • Danilo Maeda

-Characters with a lot of fighting potential like Kino, and Maou aren’t playable.
    -Baddass Boogiebop isn’t playable.
    -Best waifu Horo isn’t playable.

In the meanwhile we have TWO reps from SAO. I don’t think I’ve lost so much hype in a game after each single reveal in a while.

Oh well at least this game doesn’t look half as good and polished as Melty blood or Under night in-birth so I can be happy I’m not missing anything.

  • neogeno

Guess he couldn’t make the J-Stars cut.

  • TatsuyaKyo

Quenser and Heivia of Heavy Object needs to be in this game. The Princess and Froleytia too, at least as supports.
