Super Mario RPG Is Free On Club Nintendo

By Ishaan . February 10, 2014 . 1:00pm

Club Nintendo in the U.S. has a new batch of games available for free. The four titles are available until March 9th in exchange for Club Nintendo coins. They are:

Donkey Kong Jr. – 15O coins (3DS Virtual Console)

Art Style: PiCTOBiTS – 150 coins (DSiWare for 3DS)

Punch-Out!! Featuring Mr. Dream – 200 coins (Wii Virtual Console)

Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars – 200 coins (Wii Virtual Console)

Update: It would appear Super Mario RPG isn’t available on the Wii U Virtual Console itself. Despite Nintendo’s wording, the game is playable on Wii U only via the Wii Virtual Console. Thanks to everyone that pointed this out!

  • Already have that gem and wish it were released on the Wii U eShop for Off TV Play!

    • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Wii games have off tv play

      • Lavitz

can’t control it with the gamepad though, which makes off TV play a hassle

        • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Just use a controller lying around? Its a screen.

          • Lavitz

A big part of off TV play is being able to just use the gamepad to display and control your game. It loses the “portability” if you need a controller and you’ll have to put the gamepad down somewhere. Not good if you wanna lie in bed or on a couch with it, which I think is the best part of off TV play.

          • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Im busy playing the last story in bed lol

    • ffboi7

Aren’t all VC games Off TV playable? Considering this is the Wii-U version they have up on the Club Nintendo site it should be Off TV compatible.

      • I have to say thanks because I had totally forgotten that Nintendo put out an update to play Wii games thru the Gamepad which by the way after spending some time playing Donkey Kong Country 2 and SMRPG thru the Gamepad is great.

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

    3DS gets nothing good

    • hazelnut1112

We got Dillon’s Rolling Western that one time. Other than that, you’re right.

  • dahuuuundge

Free is a misleading title. You still need to spend tokens, which are obtained by redeeming codes from games.

    • andref

With the last few months including this one, Nintendo will most likely give those of us on the 3ds the shaft next month too.

  • ThunderGod_Cid

Well…….guess I’m downloading Super Mario RPG.

  • TheQuantumCat

Free. You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

  • Shane Guidaboni

Super Mario RPG on my 3DS, Nintendo. It’s taking you way too long to put SNES games on the handheld VC. It’s a no-brainer.

  • Lavitz

Too bad it’s on the Wii VC. I want it on my Wii U menu and be able to play without any extra controllers, dammit!

  • I want Punch-Out on my 3DS, damn it. 3DS!!

  • The Watcher

damn, i thought mario rpg was going to be on 3ds

  • AuraGuyChris

I didn’t know Super Mario RPG was on the Wii U Virtual Console…

    • Strid

It’s not, it’s misleading. You have to access it via the Wii channel and even need a classic controller to play it…

      • AuraGuyChris

        Oh, I see.

HEEEEY, ISHAAN! Don’t mislead us with single, disastrous typos!

        • I only said what Nintendo wrote!

  • kthanxyousuck

I was excited to see Super Mario RPG till I realized it wasn’t on 3DS….

    • Anewme…Again

      Yeah, same for me…

      • ThatGuy3190_7

Same for me. And I’ve always wanted to play it too. I wish the NA eShop would step its game up, pun intended.

  • Guess who finally has an excuse to play Super Mario RPG? THIS GUY!

  • Brion Valkerion

Snes games not on 3DS is a missed CRAP TON OF MONEY, every time I see articles like this.

  • ThunderGod_Cid

Tried redeeming my Super Mario RPG code on the eShop and all I got was this message:

    Error Code:107-3108
The item corresponding to the download code you entered is not currently being distributed.

    • Kaihedgie

You did it on the Wii U, didn’t you?

      • ThunderGod_Cid

I then went to Wii Channel, tried it on the Wii Shop Channel and it was finally able to go through…..

So I guess it’s NOT really on the WiiU VC but the Wii VC.

I must say, I’m kinda disappointed by that revelation.

        • Kaihedgie

I got suckered in too when I tried getting 1080 Snowboarding :T

        • Kaetsu

It actually says that you have to do it through the wii channel on the Club Nintendo page.

          • ThunderGod_Cid

Besides that blue banner that’s over the image of Super Mario RPG, that clearly says “WiiU ()200” and NOT “Wii ()200”.

            And there’s this:
“Featured games are also available for standard purchase from the Wii Shop Channel and Nintendo eShop.”

^^That’s on the “Rewards” main page. The main thing I’m concerned with is the use of the word “ALSO”.

Which implies it’s available for both the WiiU Virtual Console AND the Wii Virtual Console, like all the other NES/SNES titles that are currently on the WiiU eShop.

It’s not until you click on the game image itself, it takes you to the sub-page where it actually tells you that it’s a Wii Virtual Console title.

That’s STILL false advertising on the main Rewards page.

  • Downloaded it and found out I can’t play it without a wii classic controller. Really?

    • Kaihedgie

Do you have a Gamecube controller? Those work as a substitute

  • 3PointDecoupage

Can I get these on the wii?

    • doubleO7

Yes, you can. Both Mario RPG and Punch-Out are on the Wii Virtual Console.

      • Actually, I’d imagine that Punch-Out is specifically for the Wii U version. Super Mario RPG is the Wii version. This is what I’d figure, at least.

Unless of course, the Punch-Out code does work for both systems. Has anyone tried to get Punch-Out on the Wii through this?

  • A very cool game. People who have a Wii or a Wii U should definitely consider picking it up.

I hope Nintendo releases it on the Wii U VC soon enough!

Also: Pictobits! Pictobits is a very neat puzzle-y game. You should check it out!

  • KonjikinoSora

Now I’m bothered that I got Super Mario RPG for “free” on Wii. I would much prefer to have it on Wii U.

    • doubleO7

I believe you can transfer games up to the Wii U. But then its gone from your Wii permanently unless you buy it again.

      • KonjikinoSora

I have it on my Wii U console, I’m just disappointed that I paid 200 coins for the Wii Virtual Console version when I could have waited for the superior Wii U Virtual Console version for the same price. Either way, I have to pay an additional fee of $1.50 to upgrade.

        • doubleO7

There isn’t a superior Wii U version. You have to go through the Wii Channel on the Wii U anyways and use a Classic Controller.

  • hazelnut1112

Super Mario RPG fee with coins?
This will be said by a lot of people this month. I can already imagine the storm it will cause.

  • Warboss Aohd

    ‘Super Mario RPG’

    • Warboss Aohd

annnnnnnnnnnnd code isn’t working for Wii-U apparently.

  • malek86

Ah yes, this reminds me that Nintendo of Europe just reset all my star points, and didn’t even bother to update their (paltry) catalog afterwards.

  • Ryudo9

NOT FREE. jerks. Tho I did just hit platinum..hmmm

    • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Umm. They are free as this is essentially a reward system for u who keep supporting their game release.

  • 『ED−X』゜〜★* 平和

Wait…. Super Mario RPG For the ” WiiU ” VC? ….. uhh?

  • LexKitteh

So, the Club Nintendo website says its for Wii U on one page, but when you try and redeem coins for it, says its only for Wii.. So far most Virtual Console rewards have been for Wii and not Wii U.. Wonder which is true :/

  • This makes me sad. When I see what Club Nintendo in the U.S. has compared to the crappy stuff the Australian Club Nintendo has just makes me sad. I still have every Club Nintendo coupon since I first got my 3DS simply because I had already ordered the only worth while things on the store like the Game & Watch Collection and a Mario Party deck of cards…

  • Ishaan, I know these games are technically free, but they are still costing points and titles like these are so hurtful. ;u;

    • Taylor Greene

      Whatever gets the clicks, yo!

    • LaserVision

Yep. Misleading. I was all over this because I missed the free 4 Swords. But nope.

  • Corwen

if only it were on 3DS store

  • fairysun

The title is misleading. It needs to be changed to ‘Super Mario RPG is available in Club Nintendo.’
Or at least follow the example from other articles ‘Payday 2 is free for Playstation plus user.’

  • Immortal1

    Shameful headline, Ishann.

  • Zoozbuh

THIS IS UNFAIR, I WANT GAMES ON THE EU CLUB NINTENDO. I have loads of points saved up from past Nintendo releases, and for what?? Obsolete Wii Points that I can’t use anymore, and Mario notebooks? Come on!!

Plus technically the games are “free” since the club nintendo coins/points have no cash value. And most people who are even moderate fans of Nintendo will have enough of them saved up by now.
