Here’s What Unsung Story’s Battles Are Meant To Look Like

By Ishaan . February 13, 2014 . 11:19am

Unsung Story developers Playdek have released a piece of concept art that they say is supposed to represent what the game will look and feel like during battles.

“It’s not an in-game render but hopefully helps to convey some of the level of detail that we will put into the game.”

Unsung Story’s battle system uses triangular tiles instead of square tiles on its grid. Characters stand at the intersections between tiles, and this gives them six possible directions of movement. You can learn more about the battle system here.

Additionally, the team has also released concept art of a few more environments, which you can check out here.

Darn. I was hoping for a more stylized, fantastical look. It just looks okay if that’s how it ends up.

  • ronin4life

    seems interesting.

  • ChiffonCake

An interesting alternative to hexagonal tiles, and the first thing about the game that I’m genuinely interested in.

  • axemtitanium

This… looks like Fortress, that canceled GRIN game based on FF12!

    • F-Fortress? You mean that game with the Gargantuan Marlboro and the hot Queen Ashe? If those two things are added as stretch goals, then I will fund this game a second and third time!

      • axemtitanium

Some of the assets look strikingly similar… perhaps Matsuno purchased some of them on auction when GRIN went out of business.

        Leaked assets:

        • If that is true, then we finally got a spiritual successor to the Ivalice Alliance series, I believe!

          • axemtitanium

This is by no means confirmation. Just remarking on an observation I made. That said, I finally got off my ass and backed for $20 and so should you!

          • But I did. I got the $50 one, and so should you.

For a pledge of 20 bucks it’s not too bad, not too mention that if anything it’ll have good music considering the composer behind it, so think of it as purchasing an album or something along those lines. Besides it could turn out to be a pleasant surprise in the long run.

Finally getting desperate enough to post what backers actually want. Finally, you have earned my support.

  • The way they designed the grid… it is pretty ingenious, you know! In 3D Design, Squares are made with two triangles, while hexagons are made with six. Good for them to deconstruct the standard Tactical Grid system in these types of strategy games!

I am looking forward to this game even more! Keep the coverage for this game coming, Siliconera!

    • Kai2591

Yes the triangular grid is interesting :)
Six possible directions of movement? wow. That changes everything.

  • d19xx

    See iPhone tag… nope…

    • The game is not for phone, only the tie-in card game prequel thing that they want to do along with the Strategy game. You should go to the kickstarter page:

EDIT: OK, so it’s multiplatform and for smartphones, too. Siliconera! You guys should fix that. This is for PC and consoles, too (provided the stretch goals for the other consoles and handhelds are also reached!).

oh man, i seriously hope they use some stylised deformed chibi characters(doesn’t mean it has to be 2D sprites btw) to go together with the awesome characters that are gonna be illustrated by Akihiko Yoshida.

    • Saifer Emmerich

That would be a fun advancement from sprites, but I don’t know… Unsung Story strikes me as a more serious Tactical. From the illustrations, it looks like it has more of a realistic feel.

    • Setsu Oh

Akihiko Yoshida DOESN T NEED THE CHIBI STYLE.
look at the illustrations for let us cling toghether and shishi sensô:
      NO NEED NOW.
i m tired of that’we have to go chibi for hardware limitations.
WE ARE IN 2014 it is OVER.
you still have disgaea if you like chibi but can’t assume it loud and clear and bother others with it.
      EVOLVE. embrace the future.
