If You Don’t Watch Out, Little Mac Can One-Hit K.O. You In Super Smash Bros.

By Ishaan . February 17, 2014 . 9:32am

Last week, Nintendo revealed Punch-Out!!’s Little Mac as a playable fighter in the new Super Smash Bros. game for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS. Following the reveal, director Masahiro Sakurai took to Miiverse to discuss some of Mac’s traits.

“His biggest feature is his Power Meter,” Sakurai wrote in a comment on Miiverse. “When this gets charged up, his standard special move changes! It turns into a one-hit-K.O. uppercut.”

In another comment posted today, Sakurai stated: “Little Mac can deliver some solid punches while fighting on the ground.”

Sakurai followed up by elaborating: “…However, he’s not the strongest fighter while airborne. Try keeping his feet on the ground and avoid being blasted into the air when you use him in battles.”

Super Smash Bros. is slated for release in 2014 on Wii U and Nintendo 3DS.

  • NeptuniasBeard

Man, Little Mac must REALLY hate Samus! She should take care not to mock peoples height in the future

    • David García Abril

The funny thing is that now fans are starting to ship them like crazy (I call it “SaMac”). As if we didn’t have enough with Samus X Snake!

Talk about “love at first punch”! lol

      • Göran Isacson

Ha ha, I have seen this too. I think the internet is full of people who enjoy height differences, and I for one support this.

    • PreyMantis

Watch what you say, feminists will go ape-sheet on you.

    • Tiredman

You know how kids are sometimes, pick on the ones they like. Same case here I bet =p

  • Raltrios

I’m really curious about the conditions to increase the power meter. If it can be abused, I’ll be disappointed.

    • It looks like you’ll have to charge it and will go down quickly with the time.

    • J_Joestar

it’ll probably build up slowly with every hit dealt, and drop drastically with every hit received.

  • David García Abril

    Careful, Sakurai-san!

This can be a game breaker really easily!

    • It’s not. Look at this: http://punchout.wikia.com/wiki/Knockout_Punch

The Power Meter was first introduced in “Super Punch-Out!!”, which would fill up for every punch landed, but diminishes for each hit received. Take into account this mechanic, coupled with his terrible Air game in Kerfuffle, and it basically balances itself up!

      • AuraGuyChris

Though it looks like his gameplay revolves around dodging a lot.

        • Just like Boxing! It’s either hit or get hit! Exchanging Punches is the Manliest Sport of All Times! Of All Times!

          • God

            Amen to that.

    • Jettythesunfish

I’m going to assume the K.O. Uppercut is something you need to be very accurate with (like with the Falcon Punch or Ike’s Side Smash). It’s not like your opponent will just stand there and let you deck them.

So it might not be much of a game breaker.

      • Byron Kerrison II

Probably end up being like Luigi’s Up Special.

        • Jettythesunfish

From what I read, it’s a guaranteed KO. Luigi’s Up Special is something you need to be dead-on with. But I see where you’re coming from.

      • From what’s been shown in the trailer, the OHKO Uppercut is stationary, but it’s not as point blank as Luigi’s Super Jump Punch or Jigglypuff’s Rest. In fact, every frame seemingly counts as connecting if you are in his attack zone. It is very much a guaranteed KO.

  • idrawrobots

Why does MegaMan looks so big!?

    • FlameEmperor

Cause little Mac is so small~

      • idrawrobots

It must be a Mega Mushroom.

    • Scissors

I think it’s cause after getting punched he’s flying towards the screen. So the depth perception makes him look bigger than he actually is. In the announcement video Megaman was about the same size as Mario.

      • Nah, that’s not it. Even in a flat plane, Mega Man’s proportions make him too big-boned in the limbs and head. The chibi form does that. Talk about a clash of art-styles, no?

        • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

          Megaman’s not chibi

I think he ate some shrooms here. Or its just the KO animation

          • Are Robots even capable of having allergic reactions?

  • fireemblembeast

    I can’t wait for players to find a way to abuse this. >_>;

  • NintendoPSXTheSecond

Lol the one hit k.o. news is old Siliconera.

    • Not the last two images, though. Which adds to the already known information.

      • NintendoPSXTheSecond

Specifically why I didn’t mention the last two images only the One Hit K.O. bit lad.

  • The Watcher

    Top Tier

    • AuraGuyChris

      Don’t you mean…LOW Tier?

  • MaskedHero99

Make little mac look like ippo

  • I like how they are making the game more equal. Like yeah, Little Mac is probably really strong on ground but if you get to send him flying it’s probably game over for him or at least you’ll be able to deal lot of damage to him.

    • God

If you are good enough with air dodging, it won’t be game over, it will only be 2-4 seconds till you are back on the ground and kicking ass again.

      • Air dodging isn’t really THAAAAT easy, which means if there’s someone good at it it means it’s an experienced player. So obviously if you are good in the game you’ll kick ass with whatever character you’re using. I feel like this next Super Smash is going to need more of practice and strategies, so you’ll be able to maybe predict Little Mac’s move on the air trying to dodge and sent it flying again.

  • Jock_Nerd

I’d like to see King Hippo while Sakurai-san is at it. Or Bald Bull. Mr. Dream… nah.

  • Chaos_Knight

Little Mac did a Metsu Shoryuken.

  • leingod

Proportions look so wrong in that Megaman screenie :P

  • TheSegaMan

Seems like that could get a little annoying if people start overusing it. But I would assume that it takes effort to obtain.

  • SlickRoach

“When this gets charged up, his standard special move changes! It turns into a one-hit-K.O. uppercut.”
Oh God, I can imagine all the games with 4 Little Macs trying to build meter right now. I’m super discouraged already…

    • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

That’d be more chaotic than Fox Vs Fox Vs Fox VS WOMBO COMBO CAPTAIN FALCCOOOOOOOONNNNNNN

      • SlickRoach

        Little Mac=the new Ken

    • idrawrobots

      How so?

      • SlickRoach

Knowing a character with a guaranteed OHKO exists. What if I get hit by a Freezie when his bar is full, or stunned by a Deku Nut? I’ll tell you what, it won’t be pretty for me, that’s for sure.

    • Kayriss Wins

He’s likely to get blown up by characters with really good air normals though, I wouldn’t worry too much about. I doubt this one-hit-K.O. attack is something he can abuse without heavy risk if it whiffs

  • Now imagine Kirby using that standard special move. MEGATON PUNCH!

  • Vash bane

i had a feeling even before reading this that he would have a downside and it would have something to do with air combat.

  • GuyAlpha

So, if his KO meter is like in Super Punch Out!! then it will build up by dealing damage to the opponent. Little Mac players would have to be super offensive to get the KO meter full.

  • Kelechuckuw K.c.W

  • Notquitesure?

Have they showed any final smashes for any characters yet?

    • s07195

Samus’s giant beam was shown in the first trailer, and Mega Mac was shown in Little Mac’s reveal trailer. Also the Wii Fit Trainer’s Final Smash, Wii Fit. That’s about it though iirc.
