Dragon Quest Monsters 2 Is Selling Rather Well

By Ishaan . February 18, 2014 . 11:02am

Last week, Square Enix released a remake of Dragon Quest Monsters 2 in Japan. Originally released for the Game Boy Color, the game’s remake was released for the Nintendo 3DS and sold 443,656 copies in its first week on store shelves.

Japanese sales tracker Media Create says that Dragon Quest Monsters 2 sold through 78.65% of its shipment. Overall, the game’s performance was lower than that of the first Dragon Quest Monsters game, which was remade for Nintendo 3DS in 2012.

The 3DS remake of the first Dragon Quest Monsters sold 513,183 copies in its first week. The game sold through 93.96% of its initial shipment and was sold out at retail stores for a few weeks, meaning that potential buyers couldn’t buy it.

That said, despite the slightly lower performance of Dragon Quest Monsters 2, there is a bright side to the situation. For starters, the game hasn’t sold “badly” in the slightest.

Additionally, having sold through 78.65% of its initial shipment, it is not entirely sold out like its predecessor was at launch, and this will give Square Enix more time to ship additional copies to keep up with demand, instead of suffering a sales opportunity loss due to a lack available copies.

Omg release it in the US please Dx

  • Masa

lol, sold more than lightning returns.

    • KnifeAndFork

So did DQ IX in the states

  • Kristoffer Brandberg

Well, that’s fine and dandy, but is there any indications that it will be released outside Japan yet?

    • Kaetsu

The problem is that Dragon Quest games never sell that well outside of Japan. It really sucks but outside of Japan the Dragon Quest games really only appeal to a niche audience. However saying that I think we will get DQM2 because Squeenix can capitalise on the Pokemon fans and we should get DQX because it’s a main series game.

      • KnifeAndFork

Yeah…over a million sold in the U.S. alone for Dragon Quest IX is “really bad” compared to the much more superior number of 500k…

        • Anthony Hadow

Perhaps the spinoffs don’t sell well but the main games and the DQM original games probably sold decently. I wasn’t a big fan of Joker series but I love DWM 1 and 2 would gladly buy the 3ds remakes if they were brought over.

The reported 1.02 million sales number was for BOTH the US and Europe combined and was a lifelong (at that time) sales report, not a week long sales report.

Plus DQIX was a new game with a huge marketing campaign. This is the first week sales in only Japan for a remake. Not exactly a fair number comparison. lol You would be hard pressed to get these kinds of results in the US for only the first week. So on that end, yes these 500K units moved are pretty good.

On to the matter at hand, the series has moved respectable numbers in the US and Europe, but never quite lived up to ether Square-Enix, Enix, or Nintendo’s expectations. Heck, those units moved never stopped Enix’s US branch from going bankrupt way back when.

While Dragon Quest IX no doubt moved the best results for the series, it also had the most expensive advertisement, which has started to lead me wondering if perhaps the pay off wasn’t as good once they factored that in. There is a lot of other speculation going around about the fate of the series’ western appearances as well, but it is hard to really tell much.

Dragon Quest can perform in the west and I believe it would be profitable, but it is a matter or whether or not the parties involved really wants to push it, and building up a brand.

A few years ago that is what I thought Nintendo was trying to do, they certainly gave Dragon Quest a lot more air time on TV, and gave it a face for the public.

But after the years of silence I’d be afraid all that work may of went to waste now, or be a telltale sign of some under expectations being met. I’m afraid for now, it’s a waiting game, when the right conditions arise for a release, and the fans make themselves aware (don’t ever give up, guys ;’D) a western release may just happen again.

Though the latter half of my comment is all just speculations and my thoughts.

        • batman999

Don’t worry about it, it’s nothing personal. :p
You might have noticed a similar amount of upvotes for positive sony-related posts.
It’s some sort of fanboy-bot, don’t know the details tho.

  • Anthony Hadow

Good now release it here in the west! I imported this game specifically because Square Enix will not bring and DQ games over

  • Ryudo9

GOD DAMNIT! GIVE THE US DQ7 ALREADY! ehem sorry…only damn game I want from Square anymore

  • Fox

I love how Square Enix moves mountains to sell Final Fantasy games no one wants in NA/EU, but won’t lift a finger for the Dragon Quest games everyone wants.

Hell, they wouldn’t even release the Final Fantasy games we wanted. They must really sport massive, sweaty erections for terrible games.
