<< How to read and understand sales

Last week, Marvelous AQL released Harvest Moon: Connect to a New Land for the Nintendo 3DS, and it saw the biggest opening for any Harvest Moon game in recent years. Connect to a New Land sold 130,782 copies in its opening week.

For comparison, Harvest Moon: A New Beginning, the previous Harvest Moon game on Nintendo 3DS, sold 81,131 copies in its first week. Both the Rune Factory and Harvest Moon games have seen growth since they moved to 3DS, which is a good sign for Marvelous.

Meanwhile, Fossil Fighters: Infinite Gear, published by Nintendo for 3DS, sold 58,329 copies. On the PlayStation 3 and Vita front, Tecmo Koei’s Deception IV: Blood Ties sold a combined total of 42,576 across both platforms.

Finally, Yo-Kai Watch fans will want to note that the game has sold 496,455 copies at retail thus far. On February 19th, Level 5 announced that they had shipped 500,000 copies of the game thus far, which means that Yo-kai Watch has sold through that entire shipment. Hopefully, Level 5 have managed to get more copies of the game to retailers by now or we’re going to see the effects of a shortage hurting its sales.

    Ohh an interesting week

  • That is incredibly impressive for HM. I’m kind of astonished actually at how much better it’s doing with each entry.

I hope this continues on, and I hope that MMV can improve more and more of the titles. I feel like we see a better diversity as a whole spread through the titles last gen and that after these two titles, it’ll keep on this gen.

Also, I hope they’ll become stable enough to feel comfortable doing a (home) console HM eventually.

    • theBridgeburner

PS3 Harvest Moon? Yes, please! Man, it feels like ages since Animal Parade.

      • I think PS3/Wii U would be nice, but I don’t know if they’d actually do it. Here’s to hoping though!

        It has been ages! I am so frustrated about it. x’D;

        • Satori Satya

Don’t think its worth the trouble. Considering that they’re unlikely to do better on consoles and they would need to invest a good chunk of cash on a next gen version.

Unless they release the game on PSN and eShop as a budget title.

EDIT: Oops. I thought you guys suggested a PS4 version. I guess a PS3 version would be doable.

          • There’s absolutely no benefit to them doing a PS3 Harvest Moon or Rune Factory at this point. In fact, there’s no benefit to doing either of those games on any platform but the 3DS, since that’s where the audience for those titles is, in terms of demographics.

          • Satori Satya

            Well that’s true.

      • katamari damacy

Rune Factory Frontier on the PS3 was KIND of a console title. but man I’d love Animal Parade without the horrid load screens and load times.

        • I think that just part of that game and can’t be helped, so to speak. Because MMV does backwards things like that every once in a while (AP was as much a step down as it was above ToT).

    • Rogerrmark

I felt the franchise overall is getting better and better and diversified as well, while stil keeping the addicting gameplay.

And what’s more exciting is that games that doesn’t follow the ”Back to Nature/FoMT” formula (games like HM Boys & Girls, HM DS) are actually selling decently(for HM). Stuff like Animal Parade and A New Beginning, and this one too.

The artwork is changing more frequently too.

Not that I dislike the old, but it´s nice to have variety on NPCS, instead of trying to marry Nami again, lol. Or controlling the traditional HM’s boy with a cap and overalls.

      • Yes, that’s also what I appreciate! More and more, they’re trying different formulas/molds.

I also enjoy that there are more artstyles. Some I would like to see return more than others (more often anyway).

  • idrawrobots

I wonder if 14 is Dynasty Warriors 8: Xtreme Legends Complete Edition Assassin’s Creed IV

    • Satori Satya

Its probably Pokemon X / Y. Famitsu has that game on their charts at no. 16

The games you mentioned are below the 20th spot.

  • Eder García

14th place is missing… what happened?

    • Missing from the Media Create chart. I’ll add that in when they fix it.

  • Guest

Can we take a moment to appreciate those good steady sales Youkai Watch has been having? Next week, over half a million copies sold! :D

    • Satori Satya

Indeed. Quite impressive. Didn’t this game came out in June of last year? Those are some sexy legs this game has.

I guess this will become a new IP for Level 5?

Edit: The game is already at over half a million sold when you include digital downloads. 500,628 units sold overall.

  • AuraGuyChris

Eep. Pokemon is nowhere to be seen…

    *Le gasp*

    • Freud_Hater

Pfff, yeah right. Just wait until they release Pokémon Z and pokémon V and then Pokémon Sonar X and Pokémon Glow Y and so on. Pokémon will never die, man.

    • D-Omen

Pokémon is the missing number 14, actually.

      • Guest

        Missingno strikes again!

      • Satori Satya

It was at No. 16 on the chart last time.

EDIT: On the Famitsu chart, Pokemon X / Y is at No. 16

    • Renaldi Saputra

it’s been on top 20 charts for weeks, there’s time when it shouldn’t be on the list

  • Go Harvest Moon! Glad to see it’s doing so well.

Natsume just teased an announcement from Nintendo for tomorrow. Localization confirmed…?? … though it might just be for Yumi’s Odd Odyssey as well. I’ll be surprised though if Nintendo isn’t the one to announce this, though. Given the tie-in stuff.

    • Leanaa

It’s most likely Yumi’s Odd Odyssey because they hash tagged “YOO”

      • I’ll admit the first time I saw the tag I thought they were going YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

  • Renaldi Saputra

    deception didn’t do that good

  • Rogerrmark

    So happy for them.

Harvest Moon is one of those franchises that should live forever (as long as it keeps good, of course).

  • ZetaSiren

I’m still amazed how puzzles and dragon z is at 1.3 million. That’s incredibly high for Japan only sales. Good job

  • Herok♞

its interesting, I remember when popular games would boost 3DS sales a bunch

    • Yeah, definitely a concern at this point. 3DS has reached that point where they need more variety. I wouldn’t say the market it currently appeals to has been entirely exhausted yet, since it’s still the highest-selling platform by a large margin every week, but it isn’t seeing those huge boosts any more.

They need to figure out what they’re missing and start working towards getting it on 3DS. One avenue is bringing popular smartphone games to 3DS in a meatier form like P&DZ did, but I don’t know if that will be enough.

      • Herok♞

I would say they should tap into the shooter market but I don’t see that helping them much in Japan. all the biggest Nintendo franchises have stuff for the 3DS already except metroid but I don’t know how much good that would do for them.

    • Well, wait. What popular games do we mean? Because I don’t think HM would ever move copies, and anyone looking for HM should already have the 3DS from ANB. If you mean Fossil Fighters, I suppose that could have been the case, but I don’t see why it would have.

      • Herok♞

I would consider anything that has a really good opening like that popular, so I thought that it would give the 3DS even a little boost

        • Even though I know what you mean, HM never has been that kind of game as far as I can remember, and I don’t think it will be. (But maybe ANB did that for the 3DS, but I can’t remember and I doubt it was the case.)

  • Domii

The PS4 didn’t drop as much as I thought it would. I wonder how it’ll hold up for the next couple of weeks in Japan being that I don’t see any major titles coming out. It seems to be holding up pretty well worldwide without the big must haves. Ishaan you got pretty good insight on systems long term sales, what’s your opinion on the ps4 so far?

  • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

Great start by Harvest Moon and Fossil Fighter here.^_^ They actually is the best opening for the series here.^_^

And sadly, it seems Valhalla Knight bombed badly here.T_T But well, hope that Marvelous will be able to create new IP to change that series here as it have been keep going on fallen slope here.

  • Göran Isacson

Alas, poor Donkey Kong Country :( 60K and on the way out. Poor fella deserves so much more. Yo-Kai Watch still going strong though, kinda neat to see a new franchise do so well.
