<< How to read and understand sales

Last week saw a large number of new games released in Japan, with Mario Party: Island Tour leading the pack. The game sold 132,668 copies in its first week.

At #2 was the PlayStation 3 version of Samurai Warriors 4, with 120,452 copies sold. Hot on its heels was the PS3 version of Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes, with 119,615 copies sold.

Also released last week was J-Stars Victory Vs., a game that Namco Bandai have been playing up for many months. J-Stars brings a number of popular manga characters from Shounen Jump magazine together in an arena fighting game, and performed reasonably well in its first week. The game sold 118,240 copies on PS3 and 97,821 copies on PS Vita.

Meanwhile, PlayStation 4 also saw a game released for it last week—the PS4 version of Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes. This version of the game sold 91,903 copies.

Several other releases made it out last week as well, and can be found in the chart below. Since there’s so much information to digest here, we’re going to hold off on any analysis until we’ve laid our eyes on sales tracker Media Create’s supplementary report, where they will likely share sell-through figures for some of these games.

  • Yo-kai Watch refuses to die. Seems to only go up every week. Still hoping for that western release!

  • Six

Based Vita. Can’t wait to see the numbers once PDF2nd hits.

  • Brimfyre

Back in MY day when a company wanted you to pay for a Demo, they would give you Zone of the Enders for free….

    • psycho_bandaid

seriously. I love Metal Gear, but I will not pay 30 dollars for an hour long game.

      • otakumike

The demo for Conception 2 was even longer than GZ…jeeezus Kojima.

      • idrawrobots

I’ve played Ground Zeroes for probably 8 hours so far.

        • Aoshi00

Yeah, I loved the main campaign and there’s so many side missions and collectibles, haven’t even scratched the surface yet.. would go back to it.. Paz *.*;;; For those who think $30 is too expensive, digital is $20. I think it’s worth it.

Now I need to go back to hopefully finally finish Peacewalker HD too, I couldn’t handle playing it on the PSP lol.. I’m going to see Dr. Strangelove now..

waiting for my J Stars Victory VS..

      • I have played for over 20 Hours and I am only at 37% completion and I have not even attempted getting S ranks yet I have just been having a blast replaying through all the missions :o …

        • Hound

I myself played the demo for Blackhawk Down on the PC for nearly a year and I still play Project Diva F’s demo despite not owning it. It took 3 weeks for me to get perfects on every song. It was a blast.

A friend of mine got all his characters to level 99 in the demo for an RPG recently too. Demos are fun stuff.

          • Solid points I don’t know what to say haha! I know I’m not gonna convince anyone who sees GZ as a demo, but I’m happy with my purchase already played it more than a majority of games I bought in 2013. MGS is better than anything else out there for me so I have no issue paying for it.

    • Juan Manuel M. Suárez

Did you actually buy the game / played it somehow or are you just going by what you read on review sites~?

      • AkuLord3

Played or not, its the truth. Its a fun game but not worth the money for that

  • The Vita TV has now broken 100k units! Hooray!

And wow, the Vita really sold well this week, too. It’s a shining beacon of hope to never give up. I will send my prayer energy now to the Wii U in an attempt to see it break 15k a week.

Also while Neptunia 2 is lower on the list, 26.8k isn’t a bad number to see for the type of game it is. Go Neptunia.

    • Thatguy

And wow, the Vita really sold well this week

      Thanks J-Stars Vs for that!
Joking, obviously, but if i had that game, i will buy third Vita for it. For my future child (if i’ll have one). Also, heard very good things about SW4

    • Kaien

      lol I read “shining bacon”

      • A shining bacon of hope would be satisfactory too. Bring about the sales with it’s deliciousness and excellent smell.

  • SirRichard

Seems like a healthy week, unless you’re the Wii U or Vita TV. Kind of surprised by how neck-and-neck Samurai Warriors and MGS are, actually.

  • Guest

Finally we are starting to see better sales, everything on hardware is up and new releases with good sales.

That Hero Bank though! Let’s see if it can pull a Youkai Watch and sell better when the anime gets to air!

Wow, 97k on PSV’s Jstars! I wonder how much of their shipment they sold?

    • JonathanisPrimus

Famitsu estimate put it between 80-100% sold.

  • Suicunesol

I’m actually really surprised Mario Party was number 1. I was expecting J Stars Victory or maybe Metal Gear. And despite having 5 new games released for it, Vita still didn’t outsell 3DS this week.

    • MadGUTS

Yeah, JStars and MetalGear sales are split across platforms I guess but still surprising from Mario Party. Never seemed like a series that had much of a place on portables to me

    • ishyg

I’m still wondering how the 3DS manage to sell. Must be the colors.

  • Muffum

Surprised the PS3 and Vita versions of J-Stars sold so close to each other, since from what I’d seen the hype for the Vita version was basically nonexistent. Either way, curious to see the sell-through numbers for the game.

  • Masa

Samurai Warriors 4 outsells MGSV…good to see!

My local store has so many returns of MGSV its crazy, seeing as the game is quite new out.

  • Eder García

Famitsu and 4Gamer are saying Vita and PS4 outsold the 3DS this time, idk what to believe

    • Herok♞

Well yes and no, looking at the sales figures, indivudually you will see that both PS4 and Vita sold more than one model of the 3DS but when you put both models together they outsell both PS4 and Vita. or to put it another way, the Wiiu outsold the Vita. This is true when I talk only about Vita tv but when talking about both models the wiiu loses by far

      • Lester Rat

But Famitsu has Vita over 3DS + 3DSXL, that is the difference. By the way, usually Media Create and Famitsu numbers are quite closse, but this week they weren’t.

  • subsamuel01

J-Stars sold a lot less than I thought it was going too.

    • I actually expected more from the game myself. I refrained from saying anything because this could simply be a case of Namco having undershipped, but we’ll see. I expected it to debut much higher.

      • subsamuel01

Yea, I’m starting to think that was the case as well. It was sold out on Play Asia for a while, plus I’m sure digital sales accounted for more.

      • KnifeAndFork

They marketed the hell out of if too..

  • idrawrobots

This year would probably be the best year in a long time to release Pro Baseball Spirits in the US, but they would have to make a 360 version because it has no good baseball game.

  • It is pretty apparent that the ones complaining and calling Ground Zeroes a demo are primarily new comers and to be fair I would not recommend GZ be their entry point in the Metal Gear Solid series. GZ was released for core MGS fans who are eagerly waiting for the next instalment and there is hours of enjoyment for core fans from collecting cassette tapes for more story, getting trophies/achievements, finding various paths and trying different strategies. It is well worth $30 for core MGS fans.

    • Aoshi00

yeah, the cassette tapes are amazing and shed more light on the story, emotional and chilling, I would go back to the side missions and collect them, S-rank is out of the question for me :(. S-E should learn how to do audio drama for FF X/X-2 like MG GZ.. to fill in the gaps and expand, not adding unnecessary things negating the originals. I think it’s quite worth it too, next gen disc being $30 and digital at $20.. everyone saying it’s a demo, but was it sweet and left you wanting for more.. and there’s tons of modes and replay value.. wonder if I could unlock that Raiden mission.

Oh, Kiefer Sutherland is good, but I’d be lying if I say I don’t miss David Hayter..

      • Yeah so much to do in GZ and I’m happy that there’s a physical copy so I can add it to add to my MGS collection :D. I just started playing FFX on my vita and I totally forgot how addicting it was xD and yeah an audio drama would be great if done well for FFX. The Raiden mission is easy to unlock you just have to get all 9 XOF patches and it doesn’t have to be in one play through either. It’s a pretty fun mission too!
I miss David Hayter as snake/big boss also but I do think Kiefer makes big boss sound more like a real person.

        • Aoshi00

Thanks, that’s awesome, so far I only found one location of theXOF patches from one of the interrogated guards lol. I would definitely go find the other 8, get the achievement, and unlock the Raiden mission.

I know, at first they said digital for next gen only. Now I’m using the reversible Shinkawa art, so have HD collection, MGS 4, and this too. I also imported the Jpn ver.

FFX still holdsup very well and I still love it, have it on PS3 though, I kinda want to try it on the vita too, but I’m making so many save files on the PS 3 lol..

Yeah maybe David Hayter sounds more dramatic, while Kiefer more subdued and realistic, like Ootsuka Akio’s naturally deep voice. But I miss the original solid snake/big boss that we’ve heard for so long. I hope he would do a great job in phantom rain, especially when I go back to replay the old games. Still sad for chico and paz :(

          • Yeah I got FFX for both PS3 and vita because you can transfer the data between the two so I can play while I am at work or on the bus :O
I Pre ordered a GZ Jpn ps4 ver too just because the box art is a bit differnt :p should be getting it any day now with J-stars.This is my MGS collection I’m too lazy to type it all out so I took a Picture.

          • Aoshi00

wow, a true MGS fan lol.. I do have almost the same thing, w/o a few like Portable Ops.. I imported the Jpn LE Revengeance, and for the PS2 games I have both the Jpn and US ver. I did get the LE for HD collection, but for MGS2/3 & PW Jpn ver I only got regular. I should organize all my MGS games like you do lol.. but man, you have all 4 ver of GZ. I would import the Jpn PS4 ver after I get a PS4 later.

          • Nice! I was thinking about getting the Japanese ver of the ps2 games they would be a nice addition I think the reason in never got them was I didn’t have a Japanese PS2 to play them but I still want to get the Japanese LE’s for the HD collection and PW. Yeah MGS is the only series I will buy all the ver of, I don’t have a X1 or a PS4 yet but I will get them both eventually :p. I have a shelf just for MGS separate from the rest of my game collection. Got a bunch of the guides, novels, art books, comics, play arts Kai’s of grey fox/ big boss/ MGS2 Raiden/ MGR Raiden and I have the Hot Toys Big Boss :D!

    • KnifeAndFork

If Ground Zeroes had MGS4 like cutscenes (aka no cassette tapes), then it’d be an 8 hour long game lol

  • hazelnut1112

Got my copy of J Stars. Still need to get the hang of it and I need a damn english walkthrough that ain’t gonna happen anytime soon.

    • DivinePhoenix69

The guys over at are currently working on translations for the game. They already have most of the menus translated and are in the process of translating the story mode.

      • hazelnut1112

Thanks for that, this is very helpful.

  • Ethan_Twain

That’s a real poor opening week for both Game Center and Hero Bank. At first I thought that maybe they just had trouble releasing the same week as all these other new releases, but I don’t see an awful lot of audience overlap between these two games and the other games that did better on the chart.

Kind of a bummer, Game Center at least looked pretty rad.

    • darke

Hero Bank is particularly terrible considering that from memory 3DS sales seem to be near saturation point.

    • I think in recent years, publishers have gotten kind of careless when it comes to developing new I.P. for kids. First Capcom, now Sega.

I think they tend to forget that it isn’t like the otaku market, where you toss something out, and as long as it’s playable, has nice art and checks off the list of items on the fanservice sheet, it’ll find an audience.

The mainstream market is much more picky than that. People need to look at L5 and figure out what it is that they’re doing, since they’ve had the most success with introducing new I.P. for younger audiences in recent years.

IMO, Gaist Crusher and Hero Bank were always going to bomb. HB, especially, looks so weird and unfocused. I feel like the next big kids’ I.P. is going to be KAIO from Marvelous AQL/Inafune.

      • Ethan_Twain

Does Marvelous AQL have a good track record making those big kids’ games? Maybe I missed something, but most of their stuff I can think of is more niche enthusiast stuff. Muramasa, Dokopon Kingdom, Little King’s Story… not a whole lot of wider appeal in that catalog.

Or do you have particular faith in KAIO for some other reason? It’s dropped off the radar for so long after announcement that I kinda assumed it was vaporware.

        • Does Marvelous AQL have a good track record making those big kids’ games?

Well, Marvelous does work on Harvest Moon, which has a very mainstream audience and caters equally to men and women. In recent years, they’ve been dipping their toes into the fanservice market with Kagura and Valhalla, but they aren’t completely alien to the concept of more mainstream I.P.

Of course, Harvest Moon was created by Yasuhiro Wada, who also helped debut a lot of other Marvelous I.P., and he’s independent now, so I don’t know if they have it in them any more to really reach out to that broad audience.

KAIO, however, is Inafune’s game, and he’s a very focused guy, so for that reason alone, I have more faith in that.

  • ishyg

Whoa, Yokai Watch is going strong.
