Jam With Theatrhythm Final Fantasy Curtain Call Songs From Final Fantasy VIII To FFXIV

By Spencer . April 8, 2014 . 11:25pm

First we got a chance to listen to the songs from Final Fantasy I to Final Fantasy VII in Theatrhythm Final Fantasy Curtain Call. This 26 minute video starts with "The Man with the Machine Gun" from Final Fantasy VIII and ends with "Torn from the Heavens" from Final Fantasy XIV.

Spinoff games like Final Fantasy X-2 and Final Fantasy Type-0 aren’t included. Neither are the Romancing SaGa songs, which means Square Enix probably has one more video. If you have a Japan region 3DS you can download a second Theatrhythm Final Fantasy Curtain Call demo. This includes "Edgar and Sabin’s Theme" from Final Fantasy VI and "Let the Battles Begin (Piano version)" from Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children.

Edgar from Final Fantasy VI, Barret from Final Fantasy VII, Eiko from Final Fantasy IX, and Tifa with her Final Fatnasy VII: Advent Children look are playable. Reno shows up as an enemy in the Advent Children song. Saved data from the demo can be transferred into the retail game which will unlock 10 additional characters from the beginning.

Zack (FFVII), Ace (Type-0), Cosmos, Yuna 2nd Version (FFX-2), Ramza (FFT), Ciaran (FFXIV), Benjamin (FFMQ), Tifa 2nd Version (FFVII Advent Children), Serah (FFXIII), and Lightning 2nd Version (Lightning Returns) will be unlocked in addition to fourteen Final Fantasy characters representing each numbered title.

Theatrhythm Final Fantasy Curtain Call comes out on April 24 for Nintendo 3DS in Japan.

Vanille confirmed as a playable character! It´s going to be a challenge deciding who to choose in my team.
Also, can’t wait for the european release. I expect it to be released here this summer, along with SSB3DS.

  • Man, every other mainline FF gets an entire party, and XIV, their most successful product in ages, gets ONLY Y’shtola? Not an entire team of Scions? Lame-o!

Even so, it’s great to see XIV getting some recognition in one of these at last, especially with not just the songs but such well-put-together background maps. The Limsa one is gorgeous and I can almost tell you which BRIDGE she goes over, the map is so detailed. The Primal arenas are recreated really well for the 3DS too.

Very, very curious to see what kind of treatment Mystic Quest ends up getting. And also curious for a release date, hint, SE.

    • Nana

FFXIV is not their most successful product in ages, though. Not even close, and that’s not even counting that they basically had to make it twice.

FFXIV is good, but it gets about the recognition it deserves.

      • Are you kidding? We are talking about A Realm Reborn here. It is Square-Enix’s most successful property to date. It exceeded performance so much that it almost single-handedly brought their company out of losses and had them finally earning a profit after so many years.

The game itself still has some server overload problems since millions of people are still playing it to this day. That’s how huge the game is.

If you look at Curtain Call’s song list they aren’t even acknowledging the original FFXIV existed since all the songs are from ARR. So it’s goes to say that it ARR deserves more than one character in.

Btw before ARR was released FFXI was their most profitable game. That’s how huge MMOs are.

        • Wait what

XI was the most successful Final Fantasy because of the subscription nature of it. It’s loyal fanbase has been paying $13-15 or so every month for the past 11 years. That’s around $1700-2000 paid by every person who has stuck around the entire time. That’s in addition to all the people who just play a month here and there throughout the years, and all the money they’ve made on selling the game itself and all it’s paid expansions.

XI and XIV are profitable, yes, but that doesn’t make them the most popular. It’s not that MMOs are bigger than the single-player games, it’s that by their nature they consume far more money from the players. I should know, I’ve already spent $150 on XIV and I’ve probably spent a good $300 on XI over the years.

        • This goes a little *too* far in the other direction, I think, though I appreciate the enthusiasm. :V

XIV-ARR is absolutely their most successful product in a while, however; at a minimum it is their best-selling Final Fantasy title since XIII-1. We know it’s sold at least 1.8 million copies, by Square’s own admission, at this point (meaning it has sold faster than XIII-2 in a similar release timeframe, and has outsold XIII-3, Bravely Default, FF Type-0, Dissidia 012, Theatrythm 1 itself and both DQ Monsters releases in absolute terms) *AND* in its first month of subscription service it broke FFXI’s subscriber record. And enough people have remained subbed that just today, they felt the need to open more servers. Those sub fees translate into *substantial* revenue.

I wasn’t meaning to, and don’t think I did, engage in hyperbole when I called XIV-ARR their most successful product in a long time. It simply *is*, from the facts.

EDIT: Oh also: it’s also totally bogus that FF 1 thru 3 only get two characters each, too. At the very least put White Mage and Black Mage in for FF1, Maria and Guy for 2, and, like, Aria and Doga and/or Unei for 3. There’s plenty of options for all three of those games and I’m disappointed Square took none of them.

    • Jonah Paley

They better reveal more XIV characters…I’m hoping for Thancred myself. (Raubahn or Merlwyb would be cool too though)

    • komiko12

Yes it’s a shame only Y’shtola got in. with 4 characters per game it would’ve been logical to do Y’shtola, Thancred, Yda and the other one.

I like the Field stages the most. Very detailed and they made a point to recreate memorable locations. My favorite would be Terra’s theme where they changed the background to a snowy trail, a reference to FF6’s opening.

      • I guess it only gets my dander up because 1-3 still get at least two characters (though I think even that’s sorta lame, see above). Like, even if you don’t add more Scions, at least add The Midlander or something! He’s front and center enough in all the trailers and opening movies and stuff to serve as a character!

I suppose SE could also just be playing coy and doesn’t want to reveal *all* the characters yet (just as I’m sure we aren’t going to hear every single song in these videos). We’ll see.

        • komiko12

Midlander is a great choice. Actually, he is my first choice for main FFXIV rep but since they already chose Y’shtola I though they might not include him.

If you look at the forums for FFXIV, Midlander represent the player avatar and is an actual character simultaneously. I think a good employee was kind enough to give details about him and his party members. He explained the story in the trailers, how the party was formed and even hinted that they might cross paths with the player avatar.

  • Nanaki

The fact that Benjamin is there. Imagine a song from MQ’s soundtrack in this one….Whoa!

    • Jonah Paley

Oh please have Mystic Quest songs, please! That would be a dream come true!

    • SMT

I’d be happy with just the boss theme, but MQ does have some very good tracks otherwise.

    • I’m surprised they remembered that game. Now we need Marche, Luso, Sol, and Nacht.

      • Man FFTA was so great. I’d gladly lay down my money for a remake.

  • Ixbran

The character you have labled as Cosmos in that first line up pic is actually Princess Serah, from FFI

  • Tetris

Counting down to this one. It’s going to be great!

  • Victor Hunter

    “Ciaran (FFXIV)”

That’s a Clavat from FF Crystal Chronicles

    • Jonah Paley

I was wondering how I didn’t recognize that character, seeing as I’ve done pretty much every 1.0 and ARR quests and missions. Thanks for the info.

    • Wait what

Yeah, there’s not even a Ciaran in any Final Fantasy as far as I can tell, but definitely not one in XIV.

    • komiko12

It’s a shame that he’s a generic character. I haven’t played any Crystal Chronicles game but IIRC there are other characters they could’ve used.

      • It’s the most recognizable character design from the core game in the Crystal Chronicles subseries. It’s no different from using “Warrior of Light” to represent FF1.

  • ZeroV3

    Fisherman’s Horizon all over again…again….. and again….. <3

  • Barrylocke89

Y’know despite being one of the least liked FF games, FF8 has one of my favorite soundtracks in the series, with hits like Man with the Machine Gun and Fisherman’s Horizon. I realized this when I found myself going back to its OST again and again while web surfing and studying.

  • SMT

Oh man, that IX selection is just flawless.

Looking forward to the inevitable video containing the spinoff tracks!

    • Lifestreamer

Idk man, I just love Burmecia’s theme and QUINA’s theme so much, anyways, still very good.

      • SMT

It’s the best soundtrack in the series, so of course other good themes are missing… ;)
But IMO I think they did a great job with this specific selection, they really picked the big ones. VIII also has what I believe the second best soundtrack, but they could have picked some other things, most notably “Liberi Fatali”.

  • Jonah Paley

    Jecht fighting Braska’s Final Aeon…heh.

  • 하세요

This and Taiko. Oohh man, such rhythm hype.

Edit: Oh I didn’t even read the demo part. I’m still playing it from time to time, trying to savor my uses x_x

  • fairysun

Ah .. nostalgia … overloads my memory !!
    Can’t handle it. Must … stop …. listeni…………

  • Brian Carty

Oh cool, Lilisette is in this. Pity there was never a prominent Mithra NPC in the storylines. Well, other than the male one from wotg.

Oh well, maybe Nanaa Mihgo is a hidden character or something…

    • I rather suspect Y’shtola is going to be repping the “cat-people” side of MMO Final Fantasy in general. The odds we’ll see an “actual” Mithra in Theatrhythm CC are slim. :(

I was more surprised by *Aphmau* being party member #4, really. On some level she’s sort of a dark horse candidate for the spot, since Lion and Naja scored ahead of her in last year’s popularity poll. On the other hand, she’s a central character to the Zilart storyline, so it isn’t surprising on that level.

But yes, I made a bit of a :3 face when I realized that was Lilisette.

      • Brian Carty

Ah yea, Naja. I’d sorta forgotten about her. But then, she’d pretty much just be a red (orange?) haired Y’shtola.

Now that I think of it, I also wonder if any other FF14 characters are in the game. Thancred and Admiral Merlwyb would be nice.

  • Michael Harrison

    Still no Eyes on Me?

  • Altumn

Will unlock, So I won’t have to find the crystals for them? Cuz thetas one reason I stopped playing the first I ran out of motivation haha.

  • Whoa, even Crystal Chronicles and Mystic Quest are represented? That’s pretty thorough. (And a good thing, too – they both have great soundtracks.)

Speaking of which: hey SquEnix, is Crystal Chronicles dead now or what?

  • yellowmage

So we now have three FFXI reps; Shantotto (Tarutaru), Prishe (Elvaan), and Aphmau (Hume).

If you’ll excuse me, I think I’m gonna go stick my head in my mog house fireplace for a few minutes.

“Kupo? Master, what are you doing?”

    • Four. Lilisette was in the party as well.

      • yellowmage

[leaves head in fireplace a few minutes longer]

“Mog, would you mind heading outside and blocking the chimney for just a little while? Don’t worry, my massive HP reserves can take it.”

  • keithmaxx

Was there any mention of bonuses for having game data from the previous game?

    • 하세요

With the gameplay and song changes, it would be kind of inaccurate to bring up previous save data.

For example, Seymour’s theme has a different set of notes now on every difficulty. It would be essentially cheating if you already have a Perfect Clear on it when you really never played the new version of the song in this game.

      • keithmaxx

I see what you mean, but does that imply there were no official announcements regarding such a feature?

        • 하세요

They’ve never mentioned a data transfer at all.
