New Firefly’s Diary Video Reveals How Nippon Ichi’s "Indie Game" Plays

By Spencer . April 10, 2014 . 12:48am

Firefly’s Diary or htoL#NiQ is a curious title from strategy RPG developer Nippon Ichi Software. Designed by a member of the Disgaea team, Firefly’s Diary is an adventure game where you help Mion, a girl that wakes up alone in the year 9999. Instead of controlling Mion you play as fireflies that guide her through the world.

While the game has a cutesy look too it, it’s filled with traps and shadowy monsters. Mion can’t directly attack monsters either so you’ll have to use objects from the stage to eliminate enemies. Levels also have different gimmicks including using light and shadow elements.

Firefly’s Diary is scheduled to come out on June 19, 2014 for PlayStation Vita.

Having a silhouette in Limbo is one thing. I honestly don’t think I could handle it if I had to watch Mion getting killed in gruesome ways.

  • negineBIT

    I want to hug Mion so badly ; __;

  • Everything about that trailer was beautiful. I really hope it does well when it comes out because I want to play the heck out of this.

It’s unusual seeing NIS put out a game with such dark tone, but this is sort of like a dream game to me; so much so that it’s bittersweet. Half of my ideas just got tossed away into the “it’s already been done” bin.

My prayers and hopes for even just a smidgen of gameplay and some music have been answered!
And better yet, it looks glorious. Simply glorious. The ambience and suspense that the trailer created was absolutely God-tier. I cannot wait to hear more and more about it. THIS is how you do gaming Justice.
It’s been said before, but dat dark atmosphere and gorgeous art and now dat gaming and music. I have this tingling feeling that this is going to be a masterpiece of storytelling and an experience no one will soon forget.

      I hope it does

    The premium set looks nice

    -Visual art book
    -Original soundtrack
    -Can badges (set of 2)

I wonder if I should preorder it now…

    • 324234

Double price for an art book, CD and pins isn’t too appealing to me. Wish there was a physical copy of the game.

      • refrain

That’s the problem, have to buy the premium set to get a physical copy

        • 324234

As far as I could tell there is no physical copy of the game, looks like it’ll just include a download code like Phantom Breaker.

        • The website confirms that there is no physical copy. The first print box set is a limited run and includes a download code.

It is unfortunate, but this is a download only title. :(

            Damn one account per system…

          • X_Bacon

Aw shucks, and I was planning on preordering it too… ._.

  • Harvey Tejada Loto

    awesome console deserves awesome games

  • Kornelious

This reminds me of Limbo….only less Dark….amd more RIDICULOUSLY ADORABLE ! <3

    • X_Bacon

      True that. x3

  • Freakmasta

My only complaint so far is that Mion needs more frames of animation. She’s too stiff. Other than that, I’m pretty satisfied with the mood of the game.

  • SirRichard

Would’ve hoped for some more detailed animation in general, but it’s still a rather gorgeous game. Looks like Mario & Wario, a bit, looking forward to it.

  • mojack411

I actually like the lack of frames for Mion’s movements. It gives the whole game a very mystifying feel, as if I’m watching a dream which is what I think NIS was going for. Looking forward to seeing how this game comes along.

  • Aci

NIS doing htol#niq is like what ubisoft doing with child of light. I like when games companies diversify genres trying new ideas.

  • artemisthemp

I don’t know what’s going on in htoL#NiQ but, I feel satisfies for some reason

  • refrain

I think you can try out the control of the game on their website. It’s like a demo. Mion is cute. I think I’ll preorder this after all

  • Hau To

Wow. What a beautiful track. I wonder if the firefly is her mother or someone related to her…

  • Kayriss Wins

This game looks gorgeous, I really hope they release it outside Japan.

  • AkiraScare

Such beautiful music (TT^TT) for such a macabre game

  • NicheGamer

I can’t stop replaying the trailer! The music is just so pleasant to listen to.

  • Nagi
