Square Enix Developer Teases The Next Mana And SaGa Games

Square Enix recently celebrated the SaGa series’ 25th anniversary in a collaboration project with Japan’s Saga prefecture. They also talked about wanting to make a new retail Mana game. During a recent interview, a Square Enix mobile developer teased the possibility of a new title in both series.

Takehiro Ando is a Square Enix mobile developer who has his own Famitsu feature blog, where he talks to various creators from his company about upcoming smartphone titles. During an interview with Brave Frontier producer Eiji Takahashi, Ando had a bit to share about his company’s plans for 2014 and beyond.

“There’s much more for us here at the 10th business division,” Ando exclaimed, when Takahashi talked about how 2014 will see a lot going on. “It has been decided that the second mobile division [the division Ando is the producer in] will be helping out with [the SaGa and Mana series].”

“We will be doing our best to stay true to all your memories from the Super Famicom and PlayStation era, for those of you who are saying ‘I want to play Romancing SaGa 4’ or ‘I want to play Seiken Densetsu 5!’ but that’s all I can say for now.”

(Note that “Seiken Densetsu” is the name of the Mana series in Japan.)

He continued, “With that said, we’d like to support the teams so we can release something just as beautiful as what you guys remember from the memories of your experiences in the Super Famicom and PlayStation days. In the case of SaGa, it’ll be later this year, and Mana will also be celebrating its 25th anniversary since the birth of the series, so we’d like to work hard towards them.”

Ando doesn’t specify whether the next SaGa and Mana games will be on mobile platforms or traditional consoles, but mentions that his mobile development team will be helping out with work in both respective series.

Here’s to hoping Seiken Densetsu 5 is much better than 4.

    • rurifan

I don’t remember anything about that other than ridiculously bouncy object physics.

  • Laura Ribeiro

Meh, just hope it’s not mobile >_>

    • Tatsuya1221

Same here, console, handheld, pc, anything but android or ios.

    • Kaetsu

If they want mobile games so bad they should just put them on 3DS and Vita instead of iOS and Android.

  • DesmaX

I hope there’s an Android version for them

  • Rocco

I’m glad SE is finally remembering that FF is not the only game franchise they have, but whether they can live up to expectations or not is another matter…

  • Tinye

Gosh a full retail game in the mana series would be AMAZING

  • Dystopiq

    It’s gonna be mobile.

    • decus

And a card game. It’ll stay true to your memories of the characters by putting them on trading cards. Star Ocean can have some cards too.

      • Dystopiq

And social. It’s gonna be a Mobile Social Card Game.

  • http://www.carpefulgur.com SpaceDrake

If they end up being mobile knockoffs, I’m pretty sure the heat of the rage would ignite a new sun.

That said, with the roll Square’s been on as of late, I have a feeling they won’t be quite that thick and that this is the “mobile” division’s opportunity to make a “proper” retail game, since they talked about that earlier.

(Now if only they’d find some way to give us SD3 officially. >:( )

    • SuperSailorV

logged way more hours on that game than any game in this or the new gen.

      I’m exaggerating, but yeah… I loved SD3.

    • Naryoril

Wow, SpaceDrake showing up here? Well, somehow that’s to be expected ;)

Anyway, they already pulled it off: Putting up a teaser site for weeks for a game a lot of people have been waiting for (myself included, since the first one is my favorite game of all time), and it ended up being a dumbed down iOS port of the original game, completely overpriced. People hated them for it, but they didn’t care.

I’m talking about The World Ends With You.

  • Tenabrus

    aaaaand it’s a mobile game.

    calling it now.

  • BlueTree

    • Eric Harris

I agree with that but after the recent Bravely Default thing I can’t help but get my hopes up!

      • J_Joestar

just be ready with for a bigger disappointment then…

        • Monterossa

They might announce Type-0 localization, FF7 remake for the PS4, FFX-3, Dissidia 3, and then you wake up.

          • Saraneth

Ugh. They keep complaining about how much it would cost them to do a FF7 remake with modern graphics. I would have been happy with a PSP remake using the Crisis Core engine. Now the opportunity to do a cheap remake has passed and they’ll never make one, will they?

          • Spirit Macardi

I love how they claim that would be too expensive, meanwhile they made a damned trilogy surrounding a character that no one liked x3

          • darke

… and realise the Type-0 localisation will be of the port, to iOS, gimped with micro-transactions. The FF7 remake will be a F2P browser game. FFX-3′s main mechanics will be a tradable card game, and have all the strategic, RPG-depth of Diablo 3. And Dissida 3 will be the most perfect game in existence… who’s only English release will be on the EU store as a digital download.

          • Ouch My Head Said Dionysus

            Agito, aka Type-0 Mobile, isn’t a port.

          • JuVu

Now you’re just being too generous for European gamers.

          • darke

            … Ethiopian PSN store then?

The logic of the EU PSN digital only, of course, is to frustrate all the Europeans who have given up with the crappy EU lag and support, and set themselves up as purely US account. This would require them to swap around their account back to EU for just one Vita game.

And to optimise the pain, the download would be juuuust a little to large to fit installer+game on the 8GB cards, so you’d need to fork out the cash for a 16GB version rather then the hundreds of cheapo 8GB ones no one wants but they sell with the 8-indie-games or 6-lego-games digital download packs.

(Just optimising for maximum evil here.)

    • NorthernPatches

So true I was waiting for the moment he said mobile so I could continue to be disappointed in SE.

    • Remlot

It makes me want to cry, knowing how valid this image is

    • Anthony Hayball

That might be a possiability given their history with shite games like All the Bravest and Lightning Returns.

    • hofreith

You forgot the bunny ears for tacky japan only events.

    • http://gamgambit.tumblr.com/ Thespian Thief ♢

Holy crap this is so accurate, before clicking the article I thought “calling it, mobile aniversary” aaand yep.

I certainly hope you can backup that claim, SquareEnix. Seiken Densetsu 1, 2, 3, and Legend of Mana were amazing games. Yet somehow you created that terrible abomination known as Seiken Densetsu 4 (Dawn of Mana). I pray SD5 will have the same feeling as the first 3.5 games.

I’d prefer to play the rest of these games localized before we get new ones.

    • GH56734

      There’s fan-translations and Japanese manuals for that…
Plus, it might be for the better they stay untouched. When they released Romancing Saga 2 for the Wii VC they added MICROTRANSACTIONS in a SNES ROM. We don’t need another localization à-la Phantasia iOS

  • rurifan

Mobile? Your best is just not good enough.

  • SirRichard

I want to be cautiously optimistic after their president’s recent revelation and how he basically said that he’s caught on to what people have been saying and have known for years now, but unfortunately it is Square Enix, and they have their current reputation for a reason. That the developers put to the task are mobile devs is ominous, too.

    • SMT

Even if we choose to believe it (And I do ever so want to believe it, even if it means SE will crush my heart), that would only apply to newer projects… Whatever they had with SaGa, is most likely a mobile game since it was part of their earlier strategy, but hopefully it’s not some card game / pachinko / F2P cash grab game and is an actual game… Turn-based RPGs play just fine without buttons, and mobile has a bigger audience in Japan (And for SaGa, those never sold well outside of Japan or even received well by critics, so they’ll look at Japan first and foremost).

  • AuraGuyChris

Mobile game. This is like the perfect time to dash people’s dreams to the ground.

  • KoRLumen

It’s gonna be a SNES game. Calling it.

    • GH56734

Unless Super Nintendo had social card-based microtransaction-filled social IAP games, I don’t see this exactly true.
Unless you consider All the Bravest a SNES game too.

Also, they were done with VC Wii U/i-mode cell-phone ports of the SNES Romancing Saga games, and they even added microtransactions to said SNES roms if you were wondering. I don’t see them prostitute those games any further….

      • KoRLumen

.. I thought it was obvious that I was kidding lol.

        You’re right, though.

        • GH56734

I’m sorry.. but reality can get quite absurd, even more than jokes.
Not even the SNES re-releases are safe now T_T

  • Monterossa

If you smell….. what SE is cooking!? some more card games for smartphones? maybe?

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

ITS GOING TO BE A!!!! Gamecube game

    • Kaetsu

I would buy that instantly lol.

    • GH56734

I loved Crystal Chronicles.. but the Wii games came and..

  • Tiredman

I will be a bit hopeful. To be honest, after seeing that Final Fantasy 14 boss battle demake, I am hoping for something a bit prettier, but along the lines of that. I would love another 3 man team like Secret of Mana with switching characters on the go.

But yeah, this is Squeenix we are talking about, so there is no reason to get your hopes up. They will dash them more often than not. Just write them off until they pleasantly surprise us, though chances are that will be a long time, if ever.

  • Chardo

    “square enix MOBILE developer”

    Hyper destroyed.

    • http://www.ihasnowebsitez.com Satonaka CP-Four

Not even X-factor could save it :/

  • Jirin

I can see a Saga game with touchscreen controls but I can’t see a Mana game with touchscreen controls. An ARPG without an analog stick or directional pad? I’m sorry, but I can’t see at all how that could possibly control crisply.

At this point I’m less interested in what format it comes out and more interested that they don’t just rest on nostalgia.

Bravely Default is an awesome game, combat wise. But story wise it’s obvious that they had no idea what we liked about the games we are nostalgic about. I want them to put serious effort into the story, just present the story to us in that old nostalgic way. Don’t try to make something that looks like old Secret of Mana. Make a new story that you can feel proud of, and present it to me the way Secret of Mana did.

Cause with Bravely Default, they just tried to make something that looks like old Final Fantasy.

  • Fen Y

Let it be a true mana game not on mobile.
Let it be a true mana game not on mobile.
Let it be a true mana game not on mobile.
Let it be a true mana game not on mobile.
Let it be a true mana game not on mobile.

And then I woke up :/

  • Chronos Chris

    More disappoint from SQUARE-ENIX.

  • cloudcaelum

Chrono Cross for EU PS store confirmed… :( Don’t wanna big things…

  • epy

No videogame company has disappointed me more than S-E. I have no expectations.

  • Anthony Hayball

Square Enix, just make sure that those games don’t suck.

  • Macros

To be honest i never liked nor understood why people like mana series so much. Unless it’s Legend of Mana, but i’m pretty sure that’s not the format they’d go with.

  • Aspenharls

(designated comment on how SE is a terrible company)

  • Sylveria Shini

Yep, keeping those SNES and Playstation memories alive, like playing on a 4inch screen with terrible touch controls.

This is how SE does 25th anniversaries it seems.. just pumping out these horrible abominations that do nothing but harm and insult to the memory of the series they’re supposed to be celebrating.

  • Gmoyajp

These are 2 game’s that the New gen rarely know about as for me am excited and am sure mana game is that new one that’s coming Raise of mana but the New Final Fantasy Adventures which was first mana game I love to have theat remake that was out in japan 4 5 years ago or should I’d say a better remake yes plz

  • Space_Ghost

I’m already tired of mobile and browser based games from SE. Do they sell well? Sure. Nearly everyone has a smartphone, so the install base is much larger than a consoles is. However, gameplay is murdered by smartphones. Murdered, hacked up, thrown in a garbage bag with a cinder block and tossed out to sea. People remember these games so fondly in part because they were great games on great consoles. Consoles, SE. Consoles. If you have such a problem with consoles today just release games for PC and Mac and stop fooling around with mobile. Mobile is good for some, like startup developers or casual developers, but it’s a damn shame to see a historic company like SE stoop so low.

  • NimbusStev

“We will be doing our best to stay true to all your memories from the Super
    Famicom and PlayStation era.”

I hope those memories include a controller with physical buttons. My biggest gripe with mobile games is being forced to use a damn touchscreen for everything!

  • yellowmage

So since they’re “teasing” these games, I’m assuming that the Mana game in question isn’t Rise of Mana, since that’s already been unveiled.

  • CozyAndWarm

Hmmmmm. Hopefully Square beings this JRPG to the 3DS or something, and not mobile…

    • Testsubject909

Yeah. Now that I’ve read the article more…. I’m just hoping it’s not Mobile.

  • Testsubject909

    new SaGa game?

*tosses wallet at screen instinctively from the title itself*

  • CirnoLakes

Seiken Densetsu 3 is definitely one of my favourite Squaresoft games.

Making it see a major return, and not a game limited by mobile gaming conventions, would be really amazing.

  • Heath Bunch

The guy is head of a mobile division…soo….yeah, mobile games…
