Puzzle & Dragons Battle Tournament, a competitive arcade version of the mobile game that was made with GungHo Online Entertainment and an all-star cast of Square Enix staff members will be released later this month. The official website gives us a closer look at the characters that were designed by Tetsuya Nomura.

Yo Minazuki:

Yo may look like the perfect young man with his handsome appearance and his exceptional academic scores, but he has a side to him that is weak against unexpected events. This might not be the best characteristic for a Puzzle & Dragons battler.

Chika Makimura:

Chika has a bright and cheerful personality, and she is liked by all the boys and girls around her. She likes all-things-cute, and seems to have an interest in idols.

Murakumo Takeda:

Murakumo is a high school student with a goal to become the strongest at Puzzle & Dragons, but he previously lost against Yo, and is currently trying to get revenge.

Leona Akita:

Leona is a quiet girl who hides the fact that she’s actually an idol, but she seems to let it slip due to her professional tendencies of posing whenever there are any cameras pointing at her.

Folen Lazule:

Folen is a young prince who was previously investigating some sort of unusual event that occurred somewhere in the world, but he tends to lose his memories due to an earlier accident.

Patricia Ezel:

Patricia is a royal knight with a stout personality, but she seems to have a bit of love for Folen, and her personality changes to one of a young girl in love whenever she’s around him.

Henry Boram:

Henry is a member of a mage guild that aims to find the secrets of the world. However, he tends to act selfishly.

Tinnin is a mysterious young girl whose goal is to prevent a certain occurrence from happening to the world. She has a strong sense of justice and puts a lot of effort into everything she does, but she seems to have trouble communicating with others.

Puzzle & Dragons Battle Tournament will be launching on April 24, 2014 for arcades in Japan.

  • KuroNathan

Leona reminds me a bit of Shiki, must be the hat

    • AuraGuyChris

      Damn. Beat me to it.

And no, I realize that was a pun but it was not intentional.

      • SBKJAZZ

At least you didn’t try to Rhyme. That would have been terrible… fo’ Sho.

    • natchu96

      It’s more of an Er-*shot*

  • itsameluigi1290

    But they look great. :D

  • Izzeltrioum

No matter how many times I digest his designs, I still find them awful.

Not fond to his art I guess.

    • NintendoPSXTheSecond

I’m with you, I just can’t seem to like his art style. It also doesn’t help that Square is putting him on everything lately though.

      • Arz

I need to bring balance to the universe by saying I love his art. I really do, I don’t mind the excessive accessories.

    • Eh. I think it’s more than that too though.
You can tell he doesn’t really focus on art anymore. When I see his art, to me it looks like someone who’s out of practice.

    • DivinePhoenix69

I never liked any of his designs either tbh.

    • Slickyslacker

He’s distinguished in being ridiculously ostentatious. It’s cool to have someone like him around, I suppose.

    • Monterossa

I like his monster designs in FFV and his char designs for FFVII, VIII, and X are decent. After that he went to another direction and keeps making pretty boys, emo boys, and sissy boys.

    • Kaitsu

I mostly like when he exaggerates the characters. Aka the zipper/belts. Because when he does regular characters, they look just like everyone else. Not memorable.

    • His designs are best when the setting is modern. His The World Ends With You designs are his best yet.

And come on he has some great FF designs like Shadow and Auron.

    • ForteWily

His form is an acquired taste, but my concern is that he seems to be the only art guy left at S-E… aside for anyone in North America/Europe… still, he has been around a lot. Time for someone new, I think.

  • Chaos_Knight

Hmmmm…….needs belts and zippers…..lots of them..

    • AuraGuyChris

      I wish I could give you a zipper…

…to tell you to zip it.

      • Beat

        I love you.

      • D. Collins

LoL im actually re-playing the game and Neku just said that!!

    • Namuro

I knew it! The top comment just has to be about zippers and belt! LOL

      • d19xx

It is an unwritten rule of the internets. A great disaster will happen(new lightning game) will occur if belts and zippers are not mentioned in a Nomura article…..

        • Ric Vazquez

I can’t give you enough likes for this damn it XD

          • Kuromadou

did he still emphasize the amount of overused accessories in his current artworks/designs ? i think the quantities of those belts and zippers starts to decreasing every year. not as outrageous as Lulu’s at least :p

          • Ric Vazquez

      • Tom_Phoenix
    • Monterossa

      and black clothes.

  • Dragard Kaos

    Their heads are huge.

  • Martian Wong

Chika Makimura dressed up like Kairi from KH 2.

  • popo123

I love his art but I hope he goes back to doing realistic human and creatures. Those were the best.

    • Martian Wong

      You mean those from FFXV?

      • popo123

Nope not really but his designs on FF15 are good too. I was referring to his designs on FF5(he did the creature designs), FF8, and FF10 and the realistic versions of ff7 characters and monsters.

        • Martian Wong

Ehh, I dont know if I had mistaken you, but FFXV’s characters look really realistic to me.

          • popo123

You misunderstood. Yes they are realistic but I’m just stating the designs I loved. The ones in FF15 are good but for me, they’re not as great as compared to the ones I stated. Of course this could change once I see more of FF15.

          • Martian Wong

I see what you mean, I hope the day we see more of FFXV is soon such as E3 coming in about 2 months.

          • popo123

I think they already announced that more news about FF15 and KH3 are to be unveiled on e3.

          • Martian Wong

Nope as of right now. Shinji Hashimoto just said that new info is at work but they havent decide when will they release new information. I sure hope that the days of withholding information are behind us.

  • 하세요

I like Leona, then again I loved Shiki in TWEWY.

  • WyattEpp

Well, I’m glad they labelled which ones are boys, because I wouldn’t have been able to tell otherwise…

  • Akemi Nakajima

    “Yo Minazuki”
I just read that as “Sho Minazuki” lol

    • surakian

I’m not alone! Now I’ve got a craving for some P4A

  • Revorse

Despite everything people say I really do like his style. I’d love to see it animated. See if it holds up in motion.

  • Suicunesol

I don’t mean to go off-topic, and I don’t mean to port beg either, but PAD Battle Tournament seems like a perfect game for the Wii U. Wii U’s interface and unique controller are literally designed for Puzzle and Dragons, as it is the only home console to have a touch screen on its controller. If Nintendo somehow got this game on their console, the Wii U could have a fighting chance (in Japan).

    • Ecchitori-san

      Didn’t dualshock 4 have a touchscreen too?

  • Slickyslacker

All I see are a male Tomoko, less derpy Mako, a Yosuke-Hikaru hybrid, younger Shiki, male Namine, female Cecil, Vexen-Henry fusion, and more reserved Yotsuba.

But does anyone know everything that I’m referencing?

    • Mugiwara

Yep. This makes me what? :O

  • Saoryx

    Wasn’t this unvealed last year?

    • ネオフォトン ~ Neo

Most this does is show his designs off. Otherwise, it was only confirmed last year that Square Enix would have a hand in developing PazuDora BT.

  • ネオフォトン ~ Neo

I’d be down playing this version, but I won’t be back in Japan for at least 6+ months. :/

  • The personalities are pretty fun overall, but those designs are especially where it’s at.

I wish Nomura was working on designs for a (new) IP. vuv

  • Volta

How unsurprising, those designs look all the same to me. Tetsuya Nomura is an overrated artist IMO.

  • Pedro Furtado

Very pleasing! Really dig his style at times

  • Ric Vazquez

Same art style as The World Ends With You, awesome as heck.
