Tales of Hearts R Coming To The West This Winter

By Ishaan . April 18, 2014 . 9:35am

Tales of Hearts R is coming to the west. Bandai Namco have confirmed that the game will be released for PlayStation Vita this Winter via their YouTube channel. (Thanks, Kotaku and RPG Site)

Update: The announcement video appears to have gone up prematurely, as Bandai Namco have taken it down for the time being, but Siliconera readers managed to grab screenshots of it and mailed them in before it was removed.

    • I think I need to give this man a hug. XD

      • Tienron

        already did XD

        • I don’t know any stars who let fans hug them.

        • chronocide

Thanks for hugging him for us, man.

        • CirnoLakes

          I love you for this.

        • PreyMantis

Thank you for hugging him for us XD

        • Jealous!! Congrats on the hug.

    • IshimaruKaito

are all three coming out this year?

    • IshimaruKaito

and i didnt realize how much i could love a person lol

  • Fronkhead

Cool. Shame the Vita remake is a bit workmanlike and sloppy, almost as if they were targeting both Vita and older iOS devices from the beginning (from what I played of the JP demo it runs at 30fps and sub-native resolution and the inconsistent visuals have lost some of their charm against the original sprites) but I’ll take what I can get. Secretly looking forward to it despite the niggles I mentioned above xD.

Wonder if the iOS version will make it over eventually, after Namco have maximised sales from the Vita edition?

  • Dimentionalist

My body is ready. Hearts R has one of the best stories in the series and I found its combat to be significantly more enjoyable than Vesperia and Xillia.

Before anyone decries the game as a “demake”, please at least try it. I was convinced this was going to be a horrible game until I actually played it. I found it to be a really well-made game on its own terms, aside from the music remixes and the lack of cel-shading.

    • Fronkhead

Will do. It’s more the principle of it though, Namco could clearly try harder with this but I’m glad it’s decent.

    • Ladius

Reading some opinions about this game, it seems the battle system is actually quite well made and introduces some features that could have made even Xillia more enjoyable, like Innocence R’s counters and the Chase system.

I can understand some people liking 2D Tales games more than 3D ones, but as you say this looks like a fine game regardless of what the first Hearts did, not to mention westerners can’t really compare the two since Hearts was never localized to begin with.

      • brian

You make it seem as if we should think they don’t exist yet.
They can compare them, assuming they’ve played/watched both, but it really does seem arbitrary to cut stuff from Hearts R or pretty much any games for the most part,

    • Barrylocke89

Personally, as long as the translation work being done on the DS version doesn’t get dropped, I’m all for Tales of Hearts R getting an official release. There’s quite a few fans that were wanting to see this one, and we all know the Vita could always use more solid releases.

The DS version’s 2d style looks more appealing to me personally, but more potential Tales success doesn’t do bad things to the fandom

      • RagingTiger44

Just checked the site. The translation’s on hold. Bummer.

        • For which game is it on hold?

          • RagingTiger44

Tales of Hearts for the NDS.

    • Izzeltrioum

B-B-B-B-But Nakamura is a good composer ;_; just inflate the budget. I really liked the new remixes that compensate Tamura’s lazy-sounding drums.

  • Roberto

    • Yupp, we had to wait much too long. xD

  • AlphaSixNine

  • Nas

So many vita games this year.

    My wallet can’t handle it.

  • AlteisenX

I’m glad we’re getting Tales of Hearts first since there’s no fanlation of that released yet (I’ve already played ToI on DS), but I do hope this leads into ToI coming too!

    • Nanashrew

The fan translation is now put on hold. Reluctance to even support Tales of Hearts R but knowing they have to if they want good localizations and good Tales games to come. The community is between a rock and a hard place.

    • Merrick Egber

Exactly my opinion, out of all of the possible DS Tales titles this is the one where a fan translation is still in progress. Now I can get to play all three in English, neato.

  • Oguri Murasaki

    Dream come true.

  • Anime10121

    LOVE U NAMDAI!!! <3

  • Ladius

This news is absolutely wonderful, I have read great things about this game’s battle system and story, and the fact we’re getting yet another Tales game aside from Xillia 2 and Zestiria shows how much Namco has improved in handling this franchise in the west.

I hope the game manages to sell well, so that they can consider localizing more Vita games like Tales of Innocence R and the rest of their lineup. Having Bandai Namco act like Tecmo Koei in terms of Vita releases would be fantastic.

    • Zoozbuh

Pretty sure the localised games so far must have sold pretty well, otherwise they wouldn’t have even taken a chance on Hearts R in english. But I totally agree, I hope this trend (and the strong sales) continue!

      • fireguardiancoty

I think it might have more to do with profits made from DLC. As much as people hate it, it may be the reason why we keep getting more titles.

That or a loyal fanbase. :P

        • Zoozbuh

If people buying DLC is the reason why Tales is doing well, I am fully in support of it! I don’t get people who complain, since it’s totally optional and you don’t *have* to buy the extras.

          • Wappuli

They most likely complain because the things that are now available only as DLC used to be part of the game.

          • Anime10121

That’d make sense if there werent in game costumes to unlock as well :/ I mean, its not like the games used to have 10-15 different costumes per character. The DLC just gives us more in addition to what’s already in the game!

People just like to complain :P

          • decus

Or it really is growing to become a problem. With Vesperia PS3 the DLC was fine since that game offered a ton of costumes originally and the PS3 version offered a few more. With Graces F? Still okay, I guess, since at least every character got 1-2 costumes. But Xillia? No, they slippery sloped us to the point where only half the party had an in-game costume and only one out of three had more than one (4 costumes total…across the entire party of 6, none of them that good). The attachment system was nice and all, but costume wise that game was a disappointment.

Ultimately, complaining won’t do much since most who complain end up buying the costumes anyway since they’re tales fans, but I’ll be surprised if Zestiria offers any in-game costumes given the gradual progression toward not having them. At this point, I find it more fruitful to complain about the paid costumes not having an off-switch for their music changes if you just want the costume without the music swap.

          • Wappuli

Those music changes are really annoying sometimes, I really hope that they can be turned of in Zestiria, if it still has has them.

          • Tienron

i agree with the music changes was really annoying especially if you didn’t particularly like it, mila in dhoa’s costume love but that battle music all the time * shakes head*

          • Zoozbuh

Guys… Sorry to be mean, but costumes are something completely OPTIONAL and not neccessary to enjoy the game and the story. I get that many people want them as unlockables, but… tough? If they are the things being made “paid DLC” then I really couldn’t care less.

What makes me annoyed is when they make actual story/bonus plot dungeons DLC. Things that could have easily been included in the main story of the game, etc. All this talk about costumes is exactly the sort of “complaining” I was talking about- if you need costumes that badly, then just be prepared to pay extra now!

          • Wappuli

I would have let this slide but just wow at that hypocrisy. . . You say that there’s nothing to complain about costumes because they are optional, but then you say that you would get annoyed about bonus dungeons? You know that those dungeons are also totally OPTIONAL. They could have easily include those dungeons as a part of the game? Yea, same goes for costumes too.
If we would use that logic for optional stuff, then they could just make all sidequest and such as paid DLC, and we wouldn’t have any reason to complain.

Please don’t try to force your values onto other people like that.

          • Zoozbuh

I think you misunderstood… Costumes are purely AESTHETIC (something to look at), and don’t add any gameplay value. Whereas something which added story/plot details (in my opinion) is different. I only meant dungeons/quests which added to the story. In my eyes, that is a big difference.

But okay obviously people feel strongly about this, so sorry if I caused offence, and I’ll stop there!

          • Wappuli

Well that really depends on game, people usually compare Symphonia or Abyss to Xillias. And in that case they are right, both Xillias are really weak on costume department.
But they do ignore Vesperia, Hearts R and Innocence R, all which have DLC-costumes but still manage to have pretty nice amount of ingame costumes too. They also ignore Legendia, which being a PS2-game didn’t have any DLC, but also had only 2 ingame costumes. Not to mention that they could only be changed at the start of the playthrough.

          • Anime10121

True, Xillia did have a VERY small amount of costumes in game, and Graces only had a few more, but like you said Vesperia, and the two Vita games had plenty! I think they put in the amount of costumes they are able to for each game per time constraints and budget.

          • Yuuki

not even that persay. The problem is the “Disc Loaded Content” which some of them want to sell as as DLC.

This whle thing give the legit DLC a bad light.

    • Oh, it’ll sell. Count on it.

    • Samsara09

what really pisses me off is that Namco will give the vita 3 “tales of quality” rpgs…Atlus gave it Persona 4 golden…and Square Enix gave what?Just an empty stomach wanting to snack on others’s parties.

If companies want the vita to sell in order to invest in it,they need to do the first step themselves…and not wait for others to do it for them.

Honestly,Namco is admirable…lately they are really going in to reel the fans…boy,in a single year 4 tales of…that is rare…and fucking awesome!

      • Square should give Type-0 to the VITA or a remake of FF6 or 5.

        • Samsara09

what impressed me was that they stupidly rushed type-0 to sell it on PSP…when they could have waited a year or two to release it on vita…and then localize it.

          • Yeah kinda. But I guess they did that cause so much work was done on it to be a PSP game. They didn’t want to miss the window since PSP was on it’s way out in the west. BTW as I hear it when Type-0 came out, PSP was still huge in JPN. So I hear that’s why it stayed there. If it comes here they may redo it as a PS3 or 4 game with added stuff/tweeks.

          • Samsara09

well, they had enough faith on XV that they scraped most of their work for the PS3 to do it over…they could probably release it by 2011-2012….At least from what I suppose.

They could have done the same.Yeah,if I were they I would remake it-no-“re-imagine” it-then release it for vita…Type-0 and it’s sequels would be SE’s troop for the vita…but well,I guess that Type-0 ended up with the short end of the stick, lol…only XIII and XV will be getting notoriety, and sequels

            Yeah,maybe you are right….

          • Don’t worry. I bet they’ll still bring it over in one way or another. Remember is was always designed with westerners in mind.

          • Kelohmello

“stupidly rushed”? It was developed for the PSP, not the Vita, in the first place. You know porting costs more money right? Why make a game for a console with no proof that it’d sell well, with no funding from sony to do so? Type-0 would have made far less cash on the Vita, and localizing it wouldn’t come close to making up those numbers, much less add to them.

          • Samsara09

yeah,I know…but what I want is coherence…the same company that willing ditched the PS3 for the PS4 to develop XV,trowing into the trash can some of the work on it…could have done it now, maybe

            well,as I said,someone needs to do the first step…since consoles usually don’t sell themselves…they need a little push,usually.

          • You gotta point, but there may be other factors in their way we don’t know about that preventing them from taking some risks. And since they can’t take those risks, they put their eggs in a more worthwhile basket.

          • Samsara09

  • Jordan Daku

YES!hopefully Innocence R will come next.

    • Pyrotek85

Yeah I hope it isn’t skipped for some reason, wouldn’t be the first time.

      • John Pena

I believe it will depends on the sales for this game, and if we still ask for it, then the possibility of being localized can come true.

    • I hope for that too.

  • Raymond

I knew it……..remember then namco said that they were going to start porting the tales series to NA?

I feel that they are going to release most of them on the vita and i really don’t feel like buying a vita. It’s not that i hate the vita, i just hate the price tag on the vita.

    • Ladius

There’s no reason to assume they’re localizing “most of them on Vita” since there are two Vita Tales games to begin with. The series is firmly set on PS3 for now (look at Graces f, Xillia, Symphonia Chronicles and the upcoming Xillia 2 and Zestiria), and Vita isn’t the only current-gen handheld that is getting localized Tales games considering we got Abyss 3DS (and Phantasia iOS, if you want to consider it).

That said, if you like jrpgs and niche Japanese games you should probably consider buying a Vita, considering it’s getting a lot of support from niche publishers like XSEED, NISA, Aksys, IFI, Atlus USA, Tecmo Koei and now even Namco is starting to consider it.

  • Takane Shijou

This year has been so great for all these localizations and other such things. Really can’t wait to see what else the year has to offer and such.

    • Samsara09

well, tales of festival and E3 will probably hint us to what we will get…although it doesn’t help much that the localizations can be confirmed on random days like today…

  • Spirit Macardi

Put the cameo summons from the DS version back in and I’ll be interested. As-is though, I can’t see myself buying a Vita for it.

    • Ladius

This seems like a trivial reason to skip this game, they were a side feature even in the DS version from what I read. Of course no one is saying you should buy a Vita just for this.

      • Spirit Macardi

I just expect a remake to add features, not remove them. And the cameo summons were pretty kick-ass, especially with being able to use Klonoa of all characters!

Instead they replace them with… A fight with Hubert and Pascal in cat costumes… Yay?

        • Nitraion

          You always love your furries….
not gonna lie i love klonoa on PS1 but not in PS2…
love volleyball game even though the model is weird…

        • Samsara09

          well,this is more than a remake,the game was re-imagined.

    • MaximDualBlade

If that is your reason to buy the game, you will simply never buy it XD

  • James Enk

Finally, i was waiting soooo long for this game, never understood why they didn’t bring the DS version over, now i can add another game in my “When i get a Vita” list but

  • ivanchu77

woah,in every site everyone is ripping apart this game, it was that bad? :s

    • M’iau M’iaut

It’s a Tales game which means there will always be gasoline. It is also more of a remake from the original (for those who played it). Which changes in playstyle.

      • Nitraion

Tales fan always piece of work…
love them keep the series alive…

    • Ladius

Apparently that has more to do with people disliking the idea of Hearts’ remake being a 3D Tales game rather than with Hearts R being a subpar Tales game. It seems to be good on its own, and considering the west will never get the DS version the comparison isn’t really something that should concern us.

      • Lynx

-The game seems to be good on its own

Gameplay wise, its definitely an improvement.

        Storywise however;
The Vita version cuts out entire plots and events in exchange for their own with varying results. Some that actually have relevance to the overall story.

Plus there’s the case of graphics. Its really inconsistent. There are models that look really high quality but others that look god awful. At least the sprites on the DS were consistent.

-and considering the west will never get the DS version the comparison isn’t really something that should concern us

So….what you’re saying is comparisons to versions of games that we didn’t get shouldn’t be made?

        • DesmaX

Well, it was better than the iOS port…

          I guess?

          • Lynx

The iOS port is the same game.

I really like the events they cut so it was kind of disappointing.

          • DesmaX

I was talking about Phantasia. Sorry, shoud’ve been more clear

        • Ladius

I think comparisons can be extremely interesting, especially in a long-standing series full of ports and remakes such as Tales. That said, people should consider judging a remake by its own merits and faults when the original game is unplayable for almost everyone in a given geographical context, especially when the two versions are so different as it seems to be the case with Hearts and Hearts R.

From what I read, Hearts R’s scenario left out some events included in the DS version, but it also added new ones concerning the two new playable characters (one was already included in Hearts’ story, one is completely new) and the Triverse story. Considering Hearts R is supposed to be a reimagining, I think it isn’t so strange they changed the original story a bit in order to fit the new characters and themes.

As you say, the battle system seems to be really well made, which is something that definitely matters in the enjoyment of a game in a series whose fanbase is often more interested in battles than narrative and graphics.

As for npc models, while Tales of Hearts R surely was made with a small budget (probably because Namco knew they couldn’t expect much in terms of sales, especially after Innocence R’s results), the differences between the models of main characters and npcs is something you will find in most 3D jrpgs, including graphically sound games like the FFXIII games (this was even more noticeable in FFX HD, since the main characters got a makeover while npcs didn’t benefit from it).

        • pekikuubik

R ditches the (superior) CC system known from Team Destiny games in favour of a generic old TP-based 3D Tales battle system. I don’t consider that an improvement.

    • fireguardiancoty

It isn’t. It’s mainly people who have only seen screenshots and videos (which don’t do it any justice) and base their opinions on that. The game is better when you have it in your hands. Combat is really fun too. I personally can’t wait to get the platinum trophy again.

  • DesmaX

Man, just look how pimp he is. He’s living the dream

  • Randy Marsh

Oh thank you lord and it is not the terrible iOS port of the game! Oh thank god, a reason for me to be finally glad about having a Vita!!!

  • Nitraion

    Whoa surprise news…
but i find this an irony as this game unplayable on my Vita TV XD
but Tales of innocence is playable on Vita TV –“

  • Mr_SP

    I never thought I’d say this, but…

;_; Why does everyone keep producing things that I want? How will I ever play them all?

    • I know, right? I have around 4 or 5 games on backlog already D:

      • brian

That’s nothing, I have like 200(ish?) to play.

        • John Pena

I also have 200ish, I am an rpg collector also

          • lol Well, that’s just new games. I’m sure there are some old games (for the Wii, GameCube and PSP) that I haven’t finished either but at much it would be some 20.

          • God

I have around 30-ish new titles (from 2013-2014) and around 130 older ones, that’s counting that i deleted 400+ due to lack of free time to play them all, those 130 are only the manilest of all men.

          • RagingTiger44

200ish? Pfft. You’re not backed up enough. Got like 500+ on my backloggery. I really have to narrow down that list.

      • Samsara09

        I have…eh…2-3 rpgs for 3ds…and,uh…3-4 rpgs for PS3…

        • Mr_SP

I’ve got a Zelda on both 3DS and Wii; Soul Sacrifice, P4 Golden, Dungeon Hunter Alliance, Dragon’s Crown, Muramasa Rebirth and Super Robot Wars Z3-1 on Vita, while being halfway through Ys: Celceta, and expecting Demon Gaze this week; and PS3 has Tales of Symphonia Chronicles, FF X-2, Fallout: New Vegas, Master Reboot, Dragon Age II, Star Ocean, two Ateliers, Skyrim, Batman Arkham Origins, and an Assassin’s Creed. My PS3 backlog alone is roughly 8 to 10 months worth of games. Add two Tales and Drakengard, and I have literally a year worth of gaming, and I can only hope that more games don’t come.

          • Samsara09

            yeah….you have a really long list.An advice.

Don’t feel rushed to play them, don’t do my mistake: Play em for fun.Even if it takes you more than a year,at your pace, you will finish them.

          • Mr_SP

Of course. I do have a tendency to finish games, even if they’re bad, but I have no desire to ruin a good game by being obsessed with finishing it. I’m playing Celceta right now, and I can tell you that I’m more likely to get carried away with playing it, then take it for granted.

No, my real issue is buying things on sale. Especially for quick trophy hits, but I think I’ve gotten control on that.

AND THEY JUST ANNOUNCED FAIRY FENCER F!! *Foams at the mouth*

    • Samsara09

if there is no time to play, create it,mister SP!
      You can do it!

      • Mr_SP

…You mean, stop looking on Siliconera?

        • Samsara09

just kidding with you.Everything is a matter of planning.i am sure you can squeeze some time for your playing.

  • Jirin

Namco just sold me a Vita.

    • Samsara09

squeezing the money to buy it is the easy part now.

  • otakumike

not a huge tails fan but hey, more games= more awesome.

  • Neppygear

Please be retail in Europe, my kokoro can’t take any more of this…

  • Zoozbuh

Alright, so I am officially getting a Vita now. I was waiting for the game that would make me buy one, and I guess I just found it. Bamco is on fire with the Tales games lately!
(Not to mention I’ll also be getting Danganrompa, the Neptunia spin-off, the Atelier + ports, and so much more…)

    • John Pena

One of the main reasons why I purchased the vita is to play these games, Ive imported them but I cant read Japanese for s***.

  • Serephitus

Wow, did not expect this to be real.

    • Pyrotek85

Yup, I heard the rumor but wasn’t getting my hopes up.

  • $61526767

*Excited* <333 My vita is ready.

  • Giant cat plushie! XD
LOL. I love how this game is announced; literally the producer in a room full of otaku merchandise, where he can geek out about his upcoming video games while holding a fan and pillow. Too good.

    • uyjulian

the cat is from Tales of Xillia2

      • Yeah, it’s the main girl’s cat, right? I’ve seen trailers and game footage, but don’t know their names. (The game looks fabulous, BTW…)

        • Aunna Terrell

His name is Lulu in Japan and Rolo in NA/EU. And it’s Ludger and Julius’s cat.

        • uyjulian

It’s Ludger (the maincharacter in ToX2)’s cat.

    • Dolly

the lulu plushie actually came with a limited edition xl bundle of tales x2 as well c:

  • HerosLight

Holy shit, Thank You Baba. I now have a reason to buy a Vita.

    But.. What about Innocence R?

    • Renaldi Saputra

If Baba said so with Hearts R, then Innocence R is not something impossible again, just waiting

  • Thrasher429

    Yesyesyesyesyesyesyes. YES!!

  • Rafael Martines

Tales of Synphonia localization got japanese audio, Zestiria will be released with two audios as well, can I expect the same with R?

    • Anime10121

Zestiria being dual audio wasnt confirmed, PSblog post you’re referring to was talking about Symphonia…

      • Rafael Martines

Now that you said, I saw the post right now and unfortunately you are right :(

  • Kroz

    “Yes. OH GOD YES!”

  • Prinnydoom

    WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO…………thats all.

  • ヴィンチェンゾ Vincenzo

Too many localizations announcements these days….my body was not ready, I’m done. Hearts R will be day one for me, hoping Innocence R will come ,too.

  • EvE

    i has happy ;_;

  • Sentsuizan_93

    Now I believe it’s coming! :D

  • NeptuniasBeard

Seems the Tales Series is indeed making a comeback. If BAMCO is localizing something on the VITA, then you know they have faith in it!

  • JuVu

This is great news. Now we just have to give this game enough support so that they see that Vita is a profitable platform to bring games on, and we might get Innocence R, too. Unfortunately I fear for it, since it released before Hearts R in Japan, and they might pull something similar what they did with Vesperia in like “it’s too late now to localize this title that a huge part of fanbase is still asking for.” I hope it doesn’t come to that.

Despite all that, buying Day One. I just hope this gets the treatment it deserves, and makes it possible to bring the Innocence R over, too.

  • Will Jay

    Already pre-ordered it yesterday.

  • xXDGFXx

Wonder if they’ll bring Innocence R over. Also, why do some people not like Innocence?

    • Anime10121

I didnt care for it because if felt like sidequest the Tales game :/

    • HerosLight

I don’t know why, but it could be because of Luca.

I was put-off from ever playing the original DS game because of him, but after I kept playing he wasn’t that bad of a main character compared to Emil. I used Spada the whole time. And that battle theme (vita version) is just amazing.

    • ZnTxn

I hope so. Innocence is my favorite Tales game, even more so with the Re-Imagination.

    • Ladius

Personally, I felt Innocence DS had an interesting setting, some unusual and likeable themes, a decent cast and a serviceable battle system, but ultimately felt disappointing due to the horrible dungeon design that made a lot of playtime less than enjoyable, poor story pacing (especially near the end), lack of contents compared to most Tales games and uneven challenge. I really wanted to like it, and it was surely far better than Tempest (that isn’t such an achievement, though), but it ended up being somewhat mediocre, especially after the long wait for the fantranslation. I’m still really grateful to throughhim for his work though, the localization was extremely well made.

From what I read, Innocence R apparently fixed most of those issues by completely recreating the game’s dungeons, remaking the battle system (this game also introduced some features later used in Hearts R) and improving the story, while also including two new characters tied to the Triverse. I hope we still have a chance to get it if Hearts R does well.

      • Anime10121

While I didnt particularly care for Innocence DS, I’d still buy the remake for Vita :P

      • ZnTxn

They also expanded several things and scrapped Luca’s most idiotic moment inside the Volcano. All in all, Innocence R is better (except that Spada lost Indignation ;_____;)

        • Anime10121

D: NO one should lose Indignation… that spell is fregin amazesauce!

          • ZnTxn

            Yeah, at least the new character gets it… at level 70 I think ;____;

        • Samsara09

Well,Indignation should be reserved to the op mages…and yeah, that guy with the book got it.

      • Splash (눈‸눈)

        I hated the sidequest guild dungeon system Innocence DS had and yes, that was completely eradicated for Innocence R, a VAST improvement. I have both Hearts R and Innocence R after playing through the DS versions as well. Innocence R deserves to come over to the West too!! I daresay I prefer Innocence R over Hearts R mostly because of that story… and Conway. ^q^;

  • Gon Janken

    I need a vita…

  • Oltheros

    In b4 dub only.

    • Anime10121

Does it matter? Cant we just be happy we’re getting the game at all :/

      • Oltheros

It matters to me, that’s all I’m saying.

      • Guest

It matters because some people aren’t willing to buy a game even if it gets localized because of shitty dubs. And don’t even try and tell me they aren’t.
I like dub games that do it correctly but honestly, that’s uncommon. At least give us dual audio OR IT’S A NO-BUY FROM ME. Yeah, because of that all the game companies should listen to their fans. And if enough people think like me and do not support by buying Tales of Hearts R, then they won’t localize future titles due to poor sales. But whose fault is it really?
Maybe it’s the people who are saying, “suck it up” instead of helping us make the point to the game companies. Maybe it’s the shitty dubbers, if they did a decent job, I wouldn’t complain either. Maybe it’s the game companies that didn’t try hard enough to get the Japanese dub rights and skimped on the money spent. Truth is, like most things, it’s all of the above; everything contributes to why people are upset. The point of our disappointment is valid and there is good reason why we complain about it ALL THE TIME.

Conclusion. Just let us complain about English dubs and demand Japanese dubs. Soul Sacrifice Japanese dub as DLC. Toukiden with Japanese dub only. The recent trend of even Square Enix offering Japanese dub for Lightning Returns (They’ve never done this before) just shows how much fans have asked and wanted it. It helps them with sales and it gives us what we want. What’s bad about that? While your “Does it matter” attitude gets us nothing.
Now if someone else points out the issue of “if it’s Japanese dub only, it’s bad because I like English dub.” I tell them, I support their cause. I believe dual audio should be standard in every game. Fight on!

        — If someone actually read everything, I’d be surprised but pleasantly so.

        • Rafael Martines

          You made my day :)

        • Anime10121

          Shitty dubs, your opinion

My “does it matter” attitude gets me the game, and gets YOU nothing if it doesnt include subs.

I’ll get a game as long as its translated, I’d rather dub, but I have NO problem with subs either, I think some folks are too nitpicky about wanting to have things their way, when the adult world just doesnt work like that :/

But hey, you want what you want, I guess I can just leave it at that…

          • Guest

First off, you are right — “shitty dubs” is my opinion but one, which many of us share. Your argument is like saying, “E.T. on Atari wasn’t a shitty game, it’s just the opinions of many people.”

And second, the game was planned to be localized before you had your “does it matter” attitude. Hell, your attitude didn’t affect their localization plans at all, I assure you. I’m trying to get people to complain and raise awareness to the game company about having Japanese dubs at this point because they are still in the localization phase where they can still do something about it.

And I’ll tell you something about the business world. We aren’t nitpicking. It’s called demand. Demand drives supply, which is the point I was getting at; they make us a product we want then they get more sales. Like I said, there is people like me who are unwilling to buy what we deem as an incomplete product. And if there’s enough people like me, then it WILL affect their sales and in turn affecting everything else. Read what I wrote before replying, please.

          • Anime10121

I did read it, still sounds like whining to me, but as I said, I’m done, continue wanting what you want, I wont complain anymore, since you obviously have your reasons :/

          • ZnTxn

“And second, the game was planned to be localized before you had your “does it matter” attitude.”

Not exactly, Baba stated that the Reimaginations won’t be localized because of the Vita low sales. He just changed his opinion recently, almost a year after Hearts R was released.

          • Guest

You mean that user Anime10121’s attitude had a direct influence on the localization of Tales of Hearts R? What are you talking about. When Baba changed his opinion has no bearing logically to user Anime10121.

          • M’iau M’iaut

Drop the debate, please. No one else is making this personal.

          • ZnTxn

And I think I misread your previous post. Sorry about that.

          • Guest

            No problem, it happens.

          • Kenny Loh

He din’t mean that, dude, why you want start a fight with this? Why can’t be just all happy Tales of Hearts R getting localized?

          • Guest

I don’t get why everyone thinks this is some kind of fight though. I was merely making a point, which the comments are used for. Are you guys somehow getting some kind of hostile tone through text? That’s pretty impressive…but nonsense nevertheless.
If you read my posts with a level headed, logical mind then you would know there’s no “fight.”

          • M’iau M’iaut

By now the world knows where the battlelines on the subject are. And the world also knows that both sides will stay the course.

The world is just tired of reliving the fight in every thread. Especially those which have nothing to do with the discussion of subs and dubs.

The original poster is one known on the site to dredge up the fight even after repeated requests by both staff and community to stop. That is in part why you are seeing such quick reactions.

          • M’iau M’iaut

This isn’t a fight to continue. Move on.

          • M’iau M’iaut

Demand. Not to continue to remind folks — but dubbed materials have outsold their Japanese language counterparts by many factors since the days of VHS. Yes, even within our little niche. It expands the audience. That brings in more money to Namco or anyone else.

          • Guest

You misunderstand. I said it’s best to have dual audio, and I’m merely pointing out that there’s no harm in raising awareness to have Japanese dubs for the fans who want it. There are people who want Japanese dubs or won’t buy the game; that’s the demand situation. Not an English dub vs. Japanese dub sales argument. How did you even get there?

          • M’iau M’iaut

From a business standpoint the number of sales lost from not having dual audio does not equal the added costs of having them. Or yes, the market would have forced that change.

This is always the same few folks trying to make the rest of us believe they are the drivers of business logic. I am sorry, that is not the case.

          • Guest

Great point. Namco Bandai should hire you so they cut all the dual audio from their games, since most of their games include them. They’ve obviously losing money doing so, according to your statement.
I’m not “driving” any business logic. It’s called observation. Look at what Namco Bandai is doing — localizing with Japanese dubs.

Why are you out to get personal with me?

          • M’iau M’iaut

This is why my first post was for things to simply move on :P. I know well where the debates go. Far less chances for misunderstandings before the passions on both sides begin to fly.

          • Kenny Loh

lol we meet again, and i fully agreed with you, i don’t mind it too plus Bandai Namco is very professional and qualities in english dubs so it nothing worry about it as long as the game is coming over.

          • Forget about it. Focus on the good news.

          • Anime10121

Must not’ve seen when my comment was posted, and my later reply… I got outta this convo a LONG time ago :P

          • Sorry then. When it comes to times like this, I think this “Guest” guy has gotten cynical from constantly letdowns. I can understand, but arguing about it like this is gonna get worst.

        • ZnTxn

Every single time there’s a localization announcement, this topic pops up. Anyway…

Guys, remember. Money is the issue here. Unlike voice actors around the world, the seiyuus in japan are celebrities and sign several contracts which includes the use of their voice in that territory alone (plus character songs, etc). So, if Namco wanted to use dual audio, they need to make another contract with the seiyuus to use their voice elsewhere. Which is not cheap, heck, some could even refuse to do so.

Symphonia Chronicles was different because it was made to be launched worldwide, so they had time to write a contract with the dual audio topic in mind.

On top of that, the Vita Tales bombed in japan, with Innocence R barely outselling Tempest of all things, of course they’ll choose dub only and has valid reasons to do so. Low cost and high* profit.

*High, considering the sales of the Vita*

          • Guest

I already addressed money; the game companies want to spend as little as possible so getting the rights for the VA are “extra costs” for them, I already know that and have mentioned it in my previous post. The point being made is that there’s no harm in raising awareness of demand for a particular feature, especially when it’s one that might affect sales of the game. (And don’t tell me you know how it will affect sales figures or how it won’t, unless you’ve done market research, which Namco Bandai would gladly pay for.) And as an example, I’d point to Gundam Dynasty Warriors series. Comes with dual audio with numerous famous Japanese voice actors (声優) pitching their voices in it. Why? Because fans consider it as an important part of the experience of the game and it helps sales.

          • Slayven19

But that gundam dynasty warriors game didn’t sell all that well even with dual audio. So going by this example they were fools to have it in.

          • Samsara09

            thanks for the class,mistress/mister ZnTxn!

        • brian

I read it all, and it came across as bitter to me, so it seems as though you’re unhappy even though this is getting localized and dual audio is possible.
Plus, the argument of “English dubs are terrible/bad/terribad” is really weak because the companies that release niche games like this (Atlus, NISA, Xseed, Aksys, and in this case Bamco) do a genuinely competent or even great job in dubbing.
Chaos Wars is a bad English dub, none of the games in this series come close to that.
Besides would you be happy with Japanese audio even if you felt it was inferior to the English audio?

          • Guest

Okay, so you read into a supposed emotion through text. “Bitter.” I’m not, to clarify your misunderstanding.

And I thought you read my post. I said if the English dub is good, I don’t have to complain at all. Regardless, I’m promoting dual audio since some people prefer to have options.

And I think Namco Bandai will have dual audio with this game, as with many of their titles. Why are you guys reading into my statements and ignoring what I’ve said?

          • brian

I was trying to make a point that you seem to make about Japanese dubs being consistently superior and/or possibly immune to criticism.
Again, companies can’t always secure rights to a seiyuu’s voice or even sometimes several seiyuus so that makes licensing a pain in the ass or too expensive, especially for a niche game like this, ESPECIALLY on such a niche platform.

      • Samsara09

Unfortunately, some people refuse to leave their little pond and go to the big ocean next to it…you can’t do it for them, just ignore them…

    • HerosLight

      You know it will.

    • M’iau M’iaut

Enough. You have been doing this long enough. We have discussed the matter. You have killed the horse, the fatted calf and everything else in the barnyard. Drop the language comments which have not and will not change a darn thing. Here and in the future.

      • Oltheros

Does it bother you that much? Does it leave you seething with anger that you go out of your way to single me out every time?

What is your problem with me, really? If you’re going to say my comments about voice acting don’t “add value” to the conversation, then you’d better take a good hard look at this site, because 50% of the comments are far less productive.

With my comments I am showing my discontent for those publishers that choose to follow this practice. This is somehow bad, yet the millions of “yay localization so happy xD” comments are acceptable.

    • What’s a “b4 dub”?

      • MrSirFeatherFang

        b4 = before

As for the “dub”, he didn’t clarify if it was any language specifically, but usually when people like that user posts these things, it’s almost always about an English dub.

        • Are the Tales english dubs really that bad? I’ve seen good work with most of the ones in the 2000s and up.

          • MrSirFeatherFang

They’re pretty good if you ask me. I’ve liked the dubs since Symphonia, but if you think Symphonia was sub-par, I think they’ve upped the quality it a lot since then.
Even if there’s a hiccup here and there, you can still see lots of effort by the voice actors, which I think can be appreciated.

          • Symphonia was decent dub, I didn’t have any complaints. I’ll likely get the PS3 version once the price drops (no rush since I played it before). I mainly play RPGs and almost always dubbed ones. When games are subbed you can never tell what they say mid-battle where there are no subtitles. I hate that. Especially when in recent Tales games they have conversations in battle with foes or after a victory.

          • M’iau M’iaut

The original Symphonia has Cam Clarke and as I recall Jennifer Darling. You can’t get much more recognized in the VA field than those two.

          • Haven’t hear Cam in a while. He did Will in Legendia but I wonder if he’s still doing voices in Tales games.

          • M’iau M’iaut

I hoped he would have done the VA work for the new Turtles movie.

          • M’iau M’iaut

He’s certainly not in everything anymore. When there was a time he would have been. Now its JYB or Blum.

          • Yuri Lowenthal’s another big name that’s not as often heard anymore. All of them still get more, but I guess others are getting a chance to take roles so lead characters won’t sound the same so often.

  • rekka_zan

I wonder how they’ll localize the characters’ names (beside Hisui and Kohaku, which had been translated to Amber and Jadeite Hearts).

  • Raltrios

As a man, I must say I am fangirling right now.
For the longest time Bamco seldom released Tales games in the west, but I think I speak for most of us when I say they’ve redeemed themselves with the tremendous effort they’re putting in now. Xillia, X2, Zestiria, and now this. There’ll always be a sore spot over Vesperia, but I must say I’m quite happy.

  • Adrián Alucard

Great, the game was on the succesfull DS and they didn’ t released overseas, and they release it now on Vita? Yeah, great move namco…

    • Giordan

I think it’s a great move. More games on the Vita = more Vita sales.
btw, the DS version was a bit of a failure.

      • GH56734

Nope. It was actually one of the highest sellers in the Tales franchise right behind the top ten console high profile ones.
The Vita versions of both Innocence and Hearts were in the bottom with the spin-off GBA games that don’t even play as Tales games. Sales-wise.

And they changed lots of stuff in the Vita version. On one hand it plays like a console Tales, on the other hand it omits or makes detrimental changes to the events from the DS game.

        • Giordan

It only sold like 260,000 units, which is one of the least selling ones. Don’t you do your research?

          • GH56734

Actually, it was among the highest selling handheld outings. Didn’t you see the top 50?

  • Awrans

  • Maria Garcia

does it says anything about digital only?

    • Anime10121

Nah, but its pretty much confirmed (by Gamestop) to be a Gamestop exclusive retail release…

    • Aunna Terrell

Baba-san didn’t say anything. He just said look forward to more details later.

    • Ladius

Gamestop had a page for this game some days ago, it was taken down because it hadn’t been announced but it pretty much confirms it will have a retail release (albeit as a Gamestop exclusive).

  • dragoon_slayer12

I’m so freaking happy about this. I’ve been dying for the R titles to swing this way since first announcement. Definitely getting it day 1. Hopefully Innocence R isn’t too far behind, and although doubtful, hopefully this helps boost overall sales

  • The Watcher

    News is 4 Days old

    • Kenny Loh

4 days old is still rumor, and this is official comfirmed, it is different.

    • Ladius

Baba’s announcement video became available only today, though.

  • $51888021

All these impossible localizations…. I knew it. I’m already dead, and this is the sweet, beautiful, English afterlife ヽ(TToTT)ノ

On another note, I am both happy and sad to see the PSvita gradually become the same JRPG haven the PSP was in the west. I’m happy cuz I love these kinds of games and enjoy them the most on a portable platform. I’m sad because it really seems like Sony was trying to make the vita more internationally popular amongst devs, and the only non-japanese games on mine are 4 indie games (out of like, 23 games)

    • Renaldi Saputra

not that impossible, Bamco can’t avoid from Baba’s words about localization of Tales of series
so that it’s a lucky to be a Tales of fans

  • KingGunblader

It seems like every time Bandai Namco does something stupid like Soul Calibur Lost Swords, they back it up with something awesome like this! My Vita is ready and waiting.

  • Tanicia Marshall

Anyone else feel there wallet is shrinking more and more as all these new localization announcements keep coming out?

    • Anime10121

Shrinking? Mine seems to have been sucked into a black hole :/

      • Samsara09

mine is gonna get as small as an atom!

        • Save up a month ahead of time if you can. I usually only get about 2 games a year but I make sure I get any RPGs I want overall else.

          • Samsara09

well that was a joke :D
that I am already doing,I was already aware last year that 2014 would blew my expectations…and I was right
            …well,what I really never expected was that I would buy a vita…well,this sucks….for my wallet that is…

          • I read you. I didn’t want to get a Vita or PS4 yet, but I figured “buy them now so all you’ll have to worry about is buying the games when they come out”. Some games will be out this year but only after E3. As for before E3, only indie RPGs I can think of like Transistor.

          • Samsara09

PS4 only till XV gets here, localized…the same day I buy it…

          • Understandable. There’s almost no RPGs on it. And what few are there are online types. I prefer offline co-op RPGs or single player ones. Though I did play FF14ARR for about 5 months.

          • Samsara09

people are buying on the premise it will have many rpgs.it isn’t a reliable idea.An exemple:
the XBOX360 apparently promised much…with tales of vesperia, star ocean, eternal sonatablue dragon, lost odyssey,…but then shit happened…they were all remade to the PS3,except the last two.

but yeah, sony may have taken too long but now the PS3 is full of rpgs…but the ones who bought the PS3 too soon wasted money on an expensive and rpg-less console at the time…

          • Do you think I should’ve waiting before getting my PS4 then? Some RPGs are set to come this year but it’s only a handful so far. Like 5. I hope PS4 doesn’t end up like XBOX systems and be mainly geared toward FPS games and action. That’s fine for those who like those games, but I only really like RPGs. I need a go-to-system for them. Nintendo games have always been fun but not as mature, and Xbox games usually too gritty and dark like Dark Souls is. So I stick with Playstation systems and games which on average are a middle ground. Fun, sometimes mature in content, some anime-style games, and plenty of RPGs.

      • RagingTiger44

My wallet have been fasting for sometime now.

  • Radical Dreamer

    Let’s celebrate ! o/

  • Ash_Riot

NOW will people stop bitchin about Bandai Namco not localizing their games?

    • Aunna Terrell

Doubtful, because there’s still other games they haven’t localized yet. XD

      • Ash_Riot

Such as? Super Robot Wars? LOL. Those games were never going to sell anyway. I’d like to play them in English, but let’s be realistic there – those are extremely niche.

        • Aunna Terrell

Casting Voice, God Eater 2, and all other games that weren’t released recently. XD

          • Ash_Riot

God Eater 2 will come, but Bamco have THAT much to localize, they can only do so much at once. What’s Casting Voice? Never heard of it.

          • Aunna Terrell

You produce voice actors~ There’s a few articles here about it.

          • Ash_Riot

Oh okay. Really doubt that’s coming, then. I think people are getting desperate picking stuff like you just mentioned there, trying to justify their Namco hate now [anime doesn’t carry the same amount of clout in the West as it used to, it’s a dying market over here, so that’s probably why outside those big name anime series we aren’t getting them, but that’s not really different from the PS2 days], but whatever, I’m out.

          • Aunna Terrell

Oh, I know. I was just implying that there will ALWAYS be some sort of bitching for localizing, even with titles that Namco and we know that won’t sell well.

          • Renaldi Saputra

how do u know it will come?
I doubt it since GE Burst sold less and hunting games like Toukiden sold bad in the west

          • Ash_Riot

Toukiden hasn’t sold badly in the West at all – it’s like no. 7 on top digital games on PSN, for example. I mean, it’s more than likely just done averagely. And I remember hearing God Eater 1 did rather well. I think that they may just be waiting on the inevitable upgraded version of God Eater 2 before announcing English localization.

          • Renaldi Saputra

            i don’t think so..
since Bamco hates PS Vita generally (note that Hearts R isn’t included in this statement)
GE did well, in Japan.. in US? nope

but 15k is just a low sales for Toukiden

        • MrSirFeatherFang

I think there’s Digimon World Re: Digitize and Cyber Sleuth.

Of course there’s also the numerous anime licensed games, although similar to SRW, unlikely if it isn’t Naruto, One Piece, Saint Seiya, etc.

        • Lynx

Well, there’s a wonderful thing known as marketing which seems to be completely unknown to Bandai Namco, except for stuff like Dark Souls.

    • ZnTxn

      Someone, somewhere, it’s screaming “WHERE’S MAH VESPERIA PSTHREE!”. So no, they’ll never stop ;____;

    • CozyAndWarm

Still waiting on Digimon Decode. Namco are really dragging their butts on that one.

    • Renaldi Saputra

note that this is a word exclusively from Hideo Baba, Tales of series producer, not from whole Bamco itself..
so other games than Tales of still counts

  • Alberto Martin Albarracin

Really good,im interested in this game since his anouncement on japan.Im glad they localized it!

  • Learii

oh yes yes thank you finally a vita game from Namco

    • brian

      Touch My Katamari?

      • Anime10121

        • brian

They chose the name, not me.

          • Anime10121

      • Learii

but that the only game tho

        • MrSirFeatherFang

There’s Ridge Racer and some cross platforming games like One Piece Pirate Warriors 2 and Dragon Ball Battle of Z. You’ve probably didn’t know about the anime games because they were digital only (at least in the US).
As for unlocalized games, I am not sure other than God Eater 2 (and the upcoming Sword Art Online game).

edit: whoops, actually One Piece Pirate Warriors 2 was not localized for the Vita in the west, not even digitally :(

          • Learii

I not talking about racing or DBZ or Naruto games like that I talking about JRPG like the games you names Sword Art Online, God Eater, Super Heroine Chronicle etc..

  • This is the best news I’ve gotten all week.

    • Anime10121

Too much good news, can not choose!

  • MCoelho

  • Feenyx16

Great news for me, bad news for my wallet

  • M’iau M’iaut

Find other places for the language fight folks.

    • Kenny Loh

well, haters hate everythings bandai namco do, i don’t get it, bandai namco always being nice to their fans already especially producer Hideo Baba but those peoples still can’t get enough of it.

      • Samsara09

give the haters a friendly hand, and they will try to rip your arm off, just like a rabid dog would. Honestly, don’t get unhappy with them.It isn’t worth your time.

  • Hinataharem

I feel like the days of games staying in Japan is over.

  • Jettythesunfish

    Well it’s about damned time.

  • CozyAndWarm

Still no localization for the original Tales of Hearts??? Come on, Namco.

    • Kenny Loh

      Is this a joke?

      • ZnTxn

Pretty much sarcasm, but you never know with this fanbase <3

      • TheExile285

        probably not :/

      • Nitraion

I can’t say joke or not in tales-related article

      • Merrick Egber

I remember the commentary about not having the original Tales of Graces on the Wii. Why would someone release an original version at all, when a remake is already on the market? Even with fan criticism, it just seems antithetical to the current state of business practices in the video game industry.

    • Ladius

Namco can’t really go back in time in order to localize games for older platforms when they still had a chance to sell (remember, there have been almost no third party DS jrpg localizations since early 2012), the best they can do is show us they have changed their attitude by localizing as many Tales game on current platforms as it is financially feasible, which is what they’re doing.

  • Kohaku looks ero kawaii with swimsuit tehee

  • FFmax

Holy shit! I need to grab a vita now.

  • Wahoo! I guess I actually need to try and get a Vita now! x’D
Good on Bamco~. I’m still a little bitter about no ToH on DS (among other things), but this is fantastic. ♥

    • Samsara09

there is Innocence R….if people start to grovel and beg again like they did with hearts R,and buy Hearts r and a vita…we might get it too.

      • Oh, I meant I was bitter about none Tales of things, hehe. But yeah, it would be nice to get Innocence R, because why not~!?

        • Samsara09

one more to the collection indeed!

besides, sir puchinri, tales of Hearts R and Innocence R are part of a thing called a triverse.

yeah “tri”…there will be one last remake for the vita on this package and it’s linked to the bonus caracters from Innocence R and Hearts R…

it is probably tempest,as they saw pics of tempest as an easter egg on the secret dungeon of innocence R,supposedly…

if we don’t get innocence R and this tempest R that will probably be revealed on the tales of festival this year…having Hearts R will be an incomplete and rather empty victory.

    • CirnoLakes

      Wahoo! , indeed ^-^

      • That started my day wonderfully! x’D

  • Finally. This is good. Glad I kept my VITA. I want Innocence or Rebirth as well.

  • Yan Zhao

Finally. Now how about the new Tales of the World? Wink wink?

    PS: Dem Tales pillows!

  • Raspberry

Yes please! *starts caressing his vita*

  • This is great news, and not to look a gift horse in the mouth but is the window closed for getting the PS3 version of Vesperia or a port to PSN of Rebirth or Tempest? Some Tales games were skipped and then simply never referred to again when it comes to the west (only seeing the characters in Tales of World-like crossovers).

    • Wappuli

Most likelt closed for Vesperia and Rebirth.
Tempest is a NDS-game anyways, so obviously no PSN for it either.

      • Well I was hoping they’d do a digital subbed release on 3DS so my little bro could play it.

  • Dolly

im sorry i ever doubted you for a second vita D8
someone hold me i can’t deal with this much tales in one year. my body isn’t ready.

    • Yeah this is the only time 3+ Tales games are dropping in one year. Symphonia’s port, Xillia 2, Zesteria, and Hearts R.

      • Aunna Terrell

        I’d mark Zesty as a 2015 release personally. But I agree~

        • I thought they said it was gonna be worldwide release this year? I’ve been hearing “international release 2014” everywhere.

          • Wappuli

They only said worldwide release, they never said anything about simultaneous release.

          • Oh I see. You mean it’ll be all over but not at the same time. I thought it mean one game with multiple region voice work that was released all over the world. Like White Knight Chronicles.

          • Anime10121

What Wappuli said, and to add to that, they never even mentioned a release year…

          • Okay, I thought they did. I must’ve heard that second hand then.

          • Aunna Terrell

The actual 20th Japanese anniversary of Tales is 2015. And Zesty is that 20th anni title.

          • Ok my bad, next year then.

          • Aunna Terrell

Oh no, it’s a-okay! Baba-san said to look forward to more information on Xillia 2, Zestiria, and Hearts R in the future. So we’ll see when everything will be released sometime soon and later this year.

          • Wappuli

Well Xillia was also supposed to be 15th anniversary title, but it released in 2011 instead of 2010. . .
Let’s hope that atleast that won’t happen this time.

          • Aunna Terrell

Considering that it was announced on August 2, 2010, of course it wouldn’t release in the Japanese 15th anni year.

      • Samsara09

        this won’t be the last….

  • I don’t know what to say *tears swell* I just… I’m so happy! Day one purchase!!!!

  • Chris Cruz

YES! A reason for me to buy a Vita!

    • Might wanna try Ys: Memories of Celceta too.

  • Firion Hope

  • Go2hell66

we just got 5 tales games on ps3… not even suprised…

  • tubers

Almost a miracle from what I’ve gathered.

Western sales aren’t impressive and didn’t they say earlier that it won’t make it?

Maybe it has something to do with the new/added part of Sony 3rd party relations team (GioCorsi/Shahid).

To bad Tales of Vesperia for PS3 will never come to the West

  • Sesshomaru

Awww I still want Tales of Vesperia on PS3…:(

    • CirnoLakes

This is exactly how I feel!

  • Letiumtide

As somebody who loves Tales I’m super happy I’ve always wanted to play it, doubly as a vita owner, the Vita NEEDS this kind of support for the west to pick up steam. <3

  • Izzeltrioum

I love to read the comments section, except I read dub-weeaboo whining..nonono I’m outta here. It’s like a FF article and everyone starts posting their FF toplist, “after IX it all went downhill”, bash Motomu and FF13, etc etc,

I already own the Jp ver. but OH BLISSIN’ HELLYEAS I’d be glad to own it again.

And for those complaining for no sprites/cameo summons, let’s just hope they add Infinite Evolve and the Clock app to the jizzckage I mean package (Except non-tales summons, sorry. But who doesn’t want to spam Hell Gate/Ignite Prison with Jade or X-Buster with Anise (for the first time she IS being USEFUL) ?

I already stated my opinions about Hearts R. I love it so much. It isn’t flawless, nor garbage. IT IS a DECENT ATTEMPT OF A NON IN-HOUSE BAMCO DEVELOPER TEAM TO EMULATE TALES. The outcome? Something I consider superior to anything Team Symphonia-related battle systems. Seventh Chord understood. They focused on the series’ big feature: The Battle System. They nailed it so well that they brought back the Combo Command (Used to make combat akin to a fighter game), which hasn’t been used for a decade. 7th Chord clearly are fans of the series if they emulated a TODR/ToH battle system with Keroro RPG.

Lastly, I can see Seventh Chord being a crucial element for upcoming mothership titles in terms of new combat mechanics and such. Please, support Hearts R if you want Bamco to appreciate our kudos and props to them; The Chase System would have been badass in TOX2 when Ludger in Corpse Shell form if not making it broken to oblivion.

    • revenent hell

Thanks for the information on the game and such!
I don’t mind dubbed stuff. Good or bad overall I do prefer to hear things in my native language for understanding purposes. Dubbed stuff, no matter how bad is rarely an issue for me since nine times out of ten I will turn the voices as low as possible for any rpg or just play it muted. I hate battling for sound in my home ya know?

And voice dubbing is just notoriously bad in my experience. In movies, TV shows, games what have you. I have just given up hope I suppose so it no longer bothers me and I work around it.

I suppose as far as games go I am just happy to get it no matter the voices used.

    • I think there’s like 4 people against dubs here. Most seem to just want this game to come over.

  • ah, good good

  • CirnoLakes

Oh yes yes yes yes yes yes yes~! Yes yes yes yes yes!

YES YES YES! I love you Namco Bandai!

    • M’iau M’iaut

No novels commissioned to celebrate the event please :P.

      • CirnoLakes

I can’t tell whether that’s an earnest post to discourage me making my many long posts. Or a joke related to the fact I said almost nothing other than ‘yes’.

        • M’iau M’iaut

          Maybe both :P.

          • CirnoLakes

          • M’iau M’iaut

            You are fine

  • revenent hell

I actually am not a Tales fan really, but this game when I read about it some time ago I did want to play it. I think its because it reminded me of a mix of FFVIII and Kingdom hearts…..Eh, regardless this might be a buy for me

  • Michael Richardson

Cool. I’ll make a point of pre-ordering it.

  • Just wait on it. Likely this will drop in our laps late November or mid-December, I bet.

    • Samsara09

yeah…and hopefully by the time we get this game, they announce Innocence R.

      • I heard Innocence was originally too childish and wasn’t liked, so they redid it with more story elements to add to the depth and seriousness of the story. Did it sell well?

  • chroma816

  • Kelohmello

    awww yissss

  • Samsara09

    this is quite victory,fellow fans!

But we can still get more! This is our chance to prove to Namco that they can localize their portable mainstream tales of! Why should we miss them when they are just as good as main console ones? Isn’t that kind of silly?

We will no longer need to grovel and beg to them like dogs for a game after this,if we succeed in our endeavor…that is why losing is not an option!Let’s massively buy this game! let’s get Innocence R’s localization as well!i am counting on each and every one of you,and you can count on me too!Just buy a vita and get this game!

    • X_Bacon

Really want Innocence R too, I’m just hoping they don’t pull a Vesp-*shot*

      • Samsara09

        don’t worry.Tales of Hearts R and Innocence R are part of a same package…called ‘triverse’,alongside a third remake…the three worlds are linked…if we don’t get all three,we won’t get the big picture…got it?

  • Nan

Literally just got the Japanese version in the mail today lmao but i’ll support localization and double dip!!

    • Solomon_Kano

      What luck lol.

  • Yamaneko22

King Baba 1st the Great :3

  • Hexodious

Is it me, or is the Vita on a roll lately? Boom, all of the sudden we’re getting all these eye candy games lately.

  • Nanashrew

Can’t really support this decision. I’m tired of getting scraps from Namco in hoping for a good localization.

    • Ladius

Sorry, but this makes no sense. Since their change of heart, Namco has localized Tales of the Abyss’ port, Tales of Graces f, Tales of Xillia and Tales of Symphonia Chronicles (plus Tales of Phantasia iOS, if you will) with Tales of Xillia 2, Tales of Hearts R and Tales of Zestiria already confirmed for the western markets.

This is a far cry from getting “scraps” from Namco, in fact Tales turned from a Japan-only franchise to one of the most localization-heavy jrpg series in a matter of years, with Baba building a direct contact with western fans thanks to his visits to lots of US and European conventions, interviews and video announcements.

      • Nanashrew

Xillia felt like it was trying to be another Symphonia and we didn’t even get the Directors Cut. The Abyss port on the 3DS is a fairly low quality port but A for effort being the better version of the game. Graces and Graces F are terrible, the battle system is good but that story was bland and not worth the money. Xillia 2 doesn’t go far outside its boundries and doesn’t even add anything or to the locations. Symphonia 2, as bad as it was, at least did that and it wasn’t part of the mothership titles.

Tales of Hearts R had many parts of the story cut and replaced by a mediocre sub-plot, that the characters barely react to because they couldn’t even bother to fix the conversational flow of the dialogue or even find a segue into these new plots. They actually messed up a good portion of the story that was originally really good in the first game. there’s also another portion that won’t make any sense unless you played Innocense R as well.

Zestria, I don’t know. but I am really tired of these unnecessary Director’s Cuts.

        • Ladius

I really don’t see your point, sorry. You say you’re tired of director’s cuts, but all the games we are seeing localized are the bestnewest versions of their respective entries.

Xillia has no “director’s cut” edition (same for Xillia 2), Abyss’ port had all the US-exclusive features never seen in Japan, Graces f was the “director’s cut” of Graces, Hearts R is the reimagining of Hearts, Symphonia Chronicles included Symphonia’s PS2 extras and even DotNW’s PAL attachments and Zestiria isn’t even out.

The rest of your criticism is extremely subjective, and has really nothing to do with Namco’s localization policies or western gamers getting only “scraps”, which was your original point.

Also, you seem to forget plenty of series have updated portsversions or remakes. Just look at Final Fantasy, Persona, Ys, Atelier, Disgaea, Kingdom Hearts, Growlanser and tons of others. It’s an industry wide trend, not a Tales-specific behavior.

          • Nanashrew

Okay I looked some stuff up and retract my statement on Abyss. Symphonia (GC) and Abyss are probably the best the west every got. But if you do want to see all the problems with Hearts R be my guest. Kaji has a well written post on it http://www.blade2187.com/2014/04/18/attn-namco-please-fix-these-things-in-hearts-r/

For Graces F, It was terrible, I own it. I love the tales series. I always advocate people to buy them but I just can’t bring myself to anymore. We’ve been getting scraps for decades if you look at their past. People boycotted, wanting better, Tales left the west and now they’re back localizing some of the poor ones. And at any sign of trouble they back out not thinking they could do better. Namco only cares about Japan, always have, they have little reason to care for the west. There are people tired of being played like a guinea pigs for this. Oddly, I don’t see that here but I see the comments just about every place else.

Look at Symphonia Chronicles and tell me they tried. It’s riddled with so many problems, it’s actually worse than the PS2 version which already had a lot of problems to begin with. It’s sad for being one of the most highest selling Tales games in the western world. We get scraps.

          • Ladius

Just to start, you’re basically repeating everything Kajitani Eizan said about Hearts R, despite he admitting never playing the game in the same post you linked and only basing his criticism upon watching some let’s play videos.

This shows you’re ignoring (willingly?) any positive comments about Hearts R by people who actually played it, comments that you can find in this same comment section or on other boards. Mind it, I’m not saying Kajitani Eizan isn’t right, he could very well be, but considering a single opinion by someone who didn’t play the game while ignoring all the others is really bizarre.

Symphonia Chronicles being worse than the PS2 makes no sense at all, too: you could have gotten off saying it’s worse than the GC one, since the Chronicles version has the same, lower, frame rate as the PS2 port, but it’s in no way inferior to the PS2 release since it has all its features and the same frame rate, plus new costumes, dual audio and remastered graphics.

The rest of your post is a rant that disregards anything factual, since you’re continuing to ignore how Namco has been localizing pretty much everything aside from Vesperia PS3 and Innocence R since they changed their tune, and how every Tales game we got since then has been the best version of that entry.

What Tales games would you want them to localize, and how would them be significantly different from anything we are getting since Vesperia PS3 would be in the same position as Graces f (aside from we already getting the first version) and Innocence R is a reimagining just like Hearts R?

          • Nanashrew

Chronicles still suffers from frame rate stutter, 30fps, typos everywhere, the textures are the exact same from the Gamecube version(except for the faces and hair), sound ripped from the GC version, mixed audio problems where some voices are louder than others, voices coming out of the wrong characters and the list goes on. Few extra poly’s on the models? that’s about it. It’s riddled with mistakes and mistranslations for just a few extra Mystic Arts and a costume or two that not many cared about.

Many of the bugs that were prevalent in the PS2 version are still there and unresolved.

          • MrSirFeatherFang

Alright guys, this doesn’t even pertain to Tales of Hearts R anymore. You have both made your points. Let’s just leave it at this and move on.

          • MaximDualBlade

ignore him man. He is wasting your time.

        • fireguardiancoty

Actually, only maybe 2 or 3 things were cut from Hearts R. That isn’t “many parts of the story”. Instead of basing your opinions off of other people’s who most likely have never picked up the game for various stupid reasons, pick the game up yourself, actually play it, and base your opinion on that. You might even like the game! What they added or removed won’t even matter to most people that played it because we never even got the original.

          • Nanashrew

I actually do own the physical copy of Tales of Hearts on DS. It’s the CG version but it was the cheapest from Play-Asia.

  • SMT

I remember a long time ago Hideo Baba said ToH is the game he wanted to bring to the west the most… It’s a nice closure that it’s finally happening, and really shows how much the series has progressed in the west if they’re willing to take a chance with a VITA title. From what I hear, this is much more than the initial perception of “Lower quality reimagining”, but actually boasts a very good gameplay.

I wonder if the availability of an iOS version of this helped tip the scale towards localization, as in they could try to use this translation for it as well, in case sales don’t meet their expectations (Though that one is originally free…).

    • Ladius

I’m really happy Baba can finally bring Hearts here, too, and I agree that probably they had to consider lots of different factors in order to make the localization of such a text heavy game on a difficult platform like Vita feasible.

Maybe Sony helped them with some kind of deal (Shahid pretty much confirmed this to be linked to jrpgvita), maybe the fact the game isn’t fully dubbed (at least afaik) made it less costly to localize, or maybe they figured out the Gamestop partnership in the US was a good way to sell a limited print run without risking too much. The fact they can reuse the same localization for Hearts R’s iOS port surely helped, even if I wonder how that version is doing considering Phantasia iOS hasn’t apparently been that successful.

      • Samsara09

well, when xenoblade was released,it was a gamestop exclusive.Everyone was thinking it was gonna bomb, except the fans…lo and bohold…it was a smashing sucess.

I feel the same will happen here, not to the extent of xenoblade…but we will be getting more vita tales of…

  • Merrick Egber

To me, not only will a purchase make the Tales series get a better reception in the west, but it will also make the Vita more competitive.

  • Alexander Aubert

Mr. Baba you want a bath, or food? or wa~ta~shi~

  • Raw

FUCK YES. Original voiceovers would be great, but at this point I don’t care.

  • Super happy this is happening. I’m glad to see Bamco pushing the Tales of series more, but I guess that’s what happens when Tales of Xillia sells so well in just pre-orders, that it gets a localization confirmation for the sequel before it even comes out.

Not only that, but hey, more games for the Vita! I’m always happy for that.

  • chronocide

It’s a really good year to be a Vita owner.

  • Firarosa

Looks like it’s time for me to buy a Vita. I was hesitant to buy one before due to there being no games that interest me.
Buying one JUST for Tales games? Sounds like an awesome idea to me!

  • れいか

I think people shouldn’t jump the gun just yet… as long as it’s not officially announced, this is pretty much STILL in the air. I know it’s from an official namco video BUT there must be a reason why it’s taken down, right? It could be a pre-mature announcement or it’s still an on-going discussion of localization between Japan and the west – which still has a chance of not pushing through.

This could also be a publicity stunt…but I refuse to keep my hopes up until there’s an official statement. :)

    • fireguardiancoty

I think you answered your own question. Most likely it was put up before they intended and people caught it and took screenshots.

  • Vash bane

I might not or might buy to see about the characters. because I’ve always been curious about them since I sorto of played VS and the heroes demo’s and so saw some of these guys.

  • Brandon Washington
  • Ben Jammin Hobson

They would do , just when I finally import it and it arrived in the post on Thursday… They announce localisation… Fml

  • Slayven19

Wow I’m so late to de party on this one. I’m looking forward to dis :D

  • Kornelious

WOOHOO! I had almost given up hope on this game and Baba is here once again to prove me Wrong! Team Baba for life :D
I’m so happy were getting this, and THIS winter no less. The Vita is NO LONGER a boring system :D
Hopefully if this does well enough they’ll consider Tales of Innocense too! (Though if I had to pick between them I’d choose Hearts :P) This is just too Awesome! :D :D :D

  • Schiller

Sooooo many new Vita games, especially jrpg… I’m almost drowning in my drool :O

  • transferstudentx

honestly this year cant get better than this what more can we ask for i wonder

Certainly welcome news for all Tales fans! I hope it sells well…
I already have the jp version, what to do, what to do…
Enjoy your Hisui scenes, everyone XD

  • TempestTwin

Might actually have a reason to purchase a vita now.

  • Freud_Hater

Oh! Pretty sweet! :O My Vita library was pretty scarce, I really only had P4 Golden on it XD So now I’ll have THREE whole games! 8D (I’m counting the eventually-released Freedom Wars here)

  • awat

F*** YESHH I’m so glad i bought Innocence R first X”D my ps vita is so happy atm. Wahahahha Finally Hearts R will be my 3rd Vita game.Wuhu so excited.

  • Dylan Anantha

Huh, pity. If it was Hearts I’d buy in on launch, I don’t care for Hearts R in the slightest, it ruined almost everything I loved about Hearts.

    • fireguardiancoty

And just what about Hearts R “ruined” it? Is this based on stuff you’ve seen or have you played the game yourself?

      • Izzeltrioum

From everyone I’ve read stating this they, indeed, haven’t played it or just complain about the Sprite-3D conversion or cameo summons (which was addressed in Infinite Evolve except non-tales ones).

      • Dylan Anantha

I imported Hearts and played R on a friend’s Vita, it killed everything I love about Hearts like the art style, sprites, cel-shading, and especially the battle system. A little bit of extra story doesn’t even slightly begin to make up for everything they ruined.

If I wanted to play Xillia I would play Xillia, not a sprite-based, cel-shaded classic Tales themed game re-purposed as Xillia.

        • Ladius

But Tales of Hearts R doesn’t reuse Xillia’s battle system, it has its own systems in place which are apparently a mix of the ones introduced in Innocence R and new ones. The R games’ counter system, for instance, sounds like an improvement Xillia would have really benefited from, and Xilla didn’t have anything like Hearts R’s Chase system, just to name the biggest differences.

You seem to imply that being 3D is enough to make a Tales game like Xillia, but Graces f is completely different, Zestiria will follow Graces’ style and even earlier 3D games have their own peculiar traits. Xillia 2 itself seems to be a good improvement despite sharing most of its features with the first game.

          • Dylan Anantha

Either way, it killed everything I loved about Hearts.

  • Glad this is happening! Hope they bring more titles!

  • Kenyah

This great news should be on the top though.

  • epy

Oh Bamco, I’m so proud of you. And to think you used to annoy me so much. Now S-E on the other hand…

  • IshimaruKaito

i forgot about this game because i havent hear anything about it in like a whole year…then they spring it up on us like this!!! lol my heart WAS NOT ready! my wallet’s going to have to be tho lol

  • Alestaos

YES OMG YES BEST NEWS THIS YEAR!!! Lets hope instant physical NA/EU.

  • Julio D. Zulkarnain

    My heart is ready

  • Darkrise

    Unfortunately, I don’t have a Vita…

  • Putting aside language issues, I feel I almost couldn’t care less if Kohaku does not become Amber (and other such names). At the end of the day, her name had Japanese and English in it already, and there’s no reason to change the Japanese (and looks bad on a few levels to change it).

  • Nan

    Gamestop exclusive??? nnnnNNNnnoooOOO

  • Rita Tong

Screams into the heavens. Just screams.

  • Ric Vazquez

*sniff* I’ve waited *sniff sniff* years for this! AT LAST THE BIGGEST HYPETRAIN FOR ME THIS YEAR HAS ARRIVED! I’M THE ONE PILOTING THIS ONE!

  • ishyg

Just when I decided to grab the Japanese version for “immersion”…*sighs*

  • Kuromadou

then should Tales of Innocence R be localized next ?

  • I’m so happy!!!
