AKB48 Eat Your Heart Out, Freedom Wars Has Idols, Too

By Sato . April 29, 2014 . 3:02pm

The “citizens” of thePanopticons don’t really have much going for them, especially when you consider the fact that they’re born with million-year prison sentences; however, one thing they do have going for them are the “Propaganda Idols” to help make sure they don’t get any crazy ideas.

In order for the government to keep tabs on their people, they needed a way to be able to spread the righteousness of their thoughts through propaganda. And what better way to do so than through idols?

The “Propaganda Idols” were created through a secret sampling of appearances and voices from the citizens of all Panopticons, to create special high-grade Accessories. However, since idols need to have some sort of character to stand out, unlike the regular Accessories, these ones have just the right amount of emotion and personality to them.

Here’s a look at the three members of the idol group:

The above is a look at the group’s first hit called “Let’s Contribute ~Love’s Imprisonment is 1,000,000 Years~” and it basically reminds the citizens of the Panopticon about what they should and shouldn’t be doing.

[As an aside, Panna can be my Accessory any time!]

Freedom Wars will be released in Japan on June 26 and has been confirmed for the West, for PlayStation Vita.

You have to be kidding me…

    • Zer0faith

I blame you for allowing this to happen.

      • God

Hey you can’t blame EVERYTHING on me.

        • natchu96

If you never created the universe this wouldn’t happen, so it IS your fault.

Just because it’s our fault too doesn’t remove your guilt!

          • God

So, following that logic, everything that has ever happened to humanity is Adam’s fault for deciding to have sex instead of letting your species go extinct?

          • natchu96

Well if you put it that way, technically yeah.

. . . wait, you’re the one who told him to do that too!

          • God

Hey, i said nothing, i sent him to earth with a bitch and a brofist, what happened after that is his business.

          • natchu96

Well he had to figure out how to actually accomplish that bit.

          • God

I thought i already stated that the bible was written by a hobo on opium…

          • natchu96

Oh right, forgot you’ve said that before.

. . . who allowed opium to exist then?

          • God

          • natchu96

            *pulls out notes*

            Who allowed nature to exist?

          • God

            Chuck Norris.

        • Ric Vazquez

But you have the blame for this one >.>

    • Kumiko Akimoto

      Don’t hate on the idols.

    • Tincho Kudos

Oh you are just jealous because the accesories aren’t your creations.

      • God

Sadly, everything on your plane of existence is by extension my creation, from crappy shit like the E.T. Videogame, to awesome dark fantasy Lovecraft and Lovecraft-ish stories.

  • JustThisOne

    I can hear you.

    • Sang that in my head as I read it ( ._.)

  • Curan_Altea

    Panna, Opti, and Cony

    I don’t get it.
    its not obvious enough.

I am in awe. They are literal robot idols. They don’t even pretend that they’re anything but propaganda-spewing tools of the system. My only gripe is that they sound a bit too… “modern”? I don’t know if that’s the right word, but they just don’t sound “propaganda-y” enough in their sound- maybe it’s just because I’m too used to most propaganda songs having this distinct “military march” song, but this breezy pop-sound just isn’t what I’d associate with a song encouraging the people to conform and obey. Granted, that may just be a cultural thing. At any rate I am 100 % down with this kind of barefaced cynicism in my games. Now wait and watch for fandom to start treating them like actual idols and completely miss the point of it all.

    • JustThisOne

I want this to be playing in the background of certain parts of the city 24/7, and also in certain cutscenes, inappropriately. *__* Bonus points if the audience must clap, because those who stop will be reported to Onii-chan.

      • Göran Isacson

Exactly, and everyone in the away teams who actually see combat LOATHE the idols, as most conscripts do towards propaganda shills. Like I don’t want to see any of the fighters acting like present day idol fans and being all “PANNY IS SO MOE MOE KYUUN WAIFU”, UNLESS the rest of their team mates see them as pariahs and the fans in question are deeply unwell individuals who are so obsessed with the idols because a desperate belief in their message is the only thing keeping them from attempting prison break with guns instead of a spoon and their foreheads instead of dirt. Don’t try to sweeten this, developers. Go the distance.

Also I want to both damn you to the lowest depths of Hell and praise your name to highest Heaven for that pun at the end.

        • JustThisOne

Man, you are just 110% today! I agree! I AGREE WITH EVERYTHIIIIIING!

    • Senka

At first I was thinking the same thing about propaganda supposed to being more like a “military march” like something from the Soviet Union.

But the moment I started enjoying this song… I realized I had fallen for it. That is this video’s message for this game, and it’s beautiful. All you need to do to pacify and consequently control enough people is to make them think, “Yes, this is right. There’s nothing bad enough about life to change anything,” regardless of what’s happening.

Even their expressions, their eyes, are by design. They aren’t as energetic as real life singers lest the ones in control risk giving any kind of inspiration to the people. It’s all about being enjoyable “enough.” This is one of the most Orwellian songs I’ve seen, and I love it for that even though I’m totally aware that’s the whole point.

Plus this gives the game something cutesy for the gamers themselves…the usual fanservice, basically. Though in this case, that kind of has a transcendent meta theme there, doesn’t it?

  • Somebodyissilent

    So Miku is coming soon?

    • transferstudentx

miku is the final boss for this game lol

      • Somebodyissilent

        Would be amazing.

  • Zarx

As if I didn’t have enough reasons to buy this, ah well, more idols for me.

  • Lazulis

So…it’s like that one song, the Happiness and Peace Committee or something like that.

Is there a Propaganda boy band too? The charts needs to be full of it!

  • stephane3012

    This is really cool.

  • DivinePhoenix69

    Oh god…

  • Masa

Oh God, the worst thing about Japan is idols…………why are they in this, WHY!

    • ishyg

      Different strokes for different folks.

  • Rohan Kishibe

    STOP CONY!!!

    • Somerandomperson

I have a feeling that Cony was made specifically for the west. It’s in the style.

  • Steven Higgins

This is perfect, totally cross-cultural too, even here in America we’re pretty much slaves the celebrity trends and will buy whatever product they try to shove down our throats.

And Opti looks kind of like a guy to me.

On a broader note, It may be a cliche, but I’m really hoping our encounter with Beatrice uncovers the mass governmental corruption that’s obvious to the player but not so much the characters and that our accessory is “faulty” and eventually starts questioning whether or not it’s right to give people 1,000,000 year life sentences just for being born.
In short, even though it’a primarily a hunting game I’m hoping we will eventually bring down the Panopticons. Maybe after we work off our sentence?

  • DarkLight

C’mon we need miku! And damn, cony’s eyes look so emotionless.

    • Steven Higgins

      Bet she’s the kuudere

  • alfare

    Wow, their eyes…

  • Firion Hope

    LOL not what I expected

    CONY 2014

  • ChromeH34rts

How cute! Funnily God Eater 2 also had a propoganda idol (Shipre) what better way to promote obedience than with cute girls?

  • psycho_bandaid

so, vocaloids really have conquered the world in the future? I for one welcome our robotic singing overlords.

  • Kornelious

I don’t get it….Jk lol, Wow that is so blatantly obvious it’s hilarious XD

  • Ni ~Algidus~

I hope that they don’t show up too often. I’m in the minority who dislike idols and idols related stuff

  • wererat42

So, basically the exact opposite of the AKB0048 anime.

  • popo123

Reminds me of this glorious scene in Ratchet and Clank.

    • TheExile285

  • sakusakusakura_nyo

  • Vash bane

    “squints eyes and lower volume”

O_O interesting at least this time I wasn’t surprised about a idol (I had no idea GE2 had a idol til I got kinda further in)

o.O not bad tho I can easily see this being similar to those vocaloid and touhou stuff I see every where….no seriously I see it as ppl avatars and sigs in forums…I’ve gotten to the point that when ever someone ask whats in that persons sig. i just out right say isn’t it obvious? lol (I know make it sound like i’m trollin)

i forgot to ask is this in-game or just a separate media thing?

  • Anthony Birken
