Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth1 Coming Westward This Summer

By Ishaan . May 1, 2014 . 7:15am

Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth1 is coming to North America and Europe for the PS Vita, Idea Factory announced this morning. The game is scheduled for release this Summer.

In North America, Re;Birth1 will be available both at retail and as a download. Meanwhile, Europe will get the game as a download title.

Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth1 is a remake of the first Hyperdimension Neptunia game for Vita. It combines the original game with the battle system of Hyperdimension Neptunia Victory and adds adds new conversations and a new ending.

Rebirth1 will be released with both Japanese and English voiceovers, and English subtitles. You can view screenshots of the game below.

Europe will get the game as a download title. Makes sense since HDN victory is the third most popular downloaded game on European PSN. I’m too embarrassed to buy it in stores anyways.

    • Neppygear

Then get it online, don’t be a weak weakling.
A true Neptunier will proudly march up to that counter with the questionable anime boob game in their hands. (or at least get it delivered from Amazon)

      • Liamv2

I would buy it from amazon but then my parents would see it and I would have to explain that i’m not buying a porn game.

        • Neppygear

Why is it such a big deal, tho, the covers aren’t even explicit. The riskiest game would probably be mk2, based solely on its M/16 rating…

          • Liamv2

My parents are kinda on the conservative side.

          • KnifeAndFork

            There’s medical treatment for that

        • You should see the games I order online (ಠ⌣ಠ)

    • Wtv
      • Landale

A rational person would look at it that way. Weird social stigmas on the other hand look at it as being bright, and cheerful, and girly. Not to mention the lack of a bust on two of the three girls, and the third’s covered over. The west seems to have this weird thing about flat/small chests = little girl automatically with no regard to other details. Not too hard to see why a person would be able to realize they might be considered, unjustly, creepy or weird for it.

  • FX102A

Guess it’s time for an import then.

Sure if I want DLC I’ll need to import the cards too, well I guess there’s always a catch I guess.

Glad this is getting released cos even after 2 attempts I couldn’t finish the first (it really wasn’t that great in gameplay) so looking forward to the improvements.

Then again, I never played the other 2 either, wonder how much my special editions would be worth now?

  • IV-n

“Rebirth1 will be released with both Japanese and English voiceovers”

YES!! Bleed my wallet as much as you want Compile Heart!!

  • Isn’t this one a remake of the first one? If so, good news for me. I’ve heard nothing but bad things about the gameplay and that’s kept me away from the series.

    • Andhros

Pretty much. The fighting part underwent a fairly popular change during the sequel. So this news is awesome since I thought the story was quite fun.

  • JMaster3000

As a European i say YAY!
    >Imports from USA

  • Taedirk

I thought Re;Birth’s NA release had already been confirmed. Was this just dating it for “sometime this summer”?

    • Landale

The release was confirmed, this is just general date and distribution method information.

  • Neppygear

    Ah, yes, 2014 Digital-Only Euro Release #900.

    • Anesia Hunter

Why complain at all? The worst case scenario is that EU doesn’t get any of the games at all (although with the PS Vita importing is an option.) But regardless, shouldn’t you be excited that it’ll be playable in a language you speak. I know I get excited whether a game is DD-only, retail-only or both. And that’s all because most games on my backlog will never see the west.

      • Neppygear

I don’t like digital-only releases. My Vita’s memory card is already pretty full, and I vastly prefer having the boxes and such. I’ve imported American releases in the past just to avoid getting the Euro releases digitally, but this gets kinda hard when it’s a Vita game with DLC…

        • Andar

The Vita is pretty much a special case when it comes to digital-only releases. Normally, I have little issue with it; my 3DS and PSP are full of digital titles. But with Vita, there’s a ridiculous added price to pay if you want to play digital-only games, which is the memory cards. There are several games which are upwards of 3GB in size, and the cards are simply expensive.

          16GB Vita card: $50
          16GB Memory Stick: ~$35
          16GB SD card: <$10

Essentially, I have no issue with publishers deciding to release digital-only titles, and I in fact already own several of them for Vita. However, I am incredibly frustrated with the memory card situation as it makes it very difficult to manage multiple digital titles. It's not just a matter of having the space for multiple games at the same time; save data is tied to a game's installation. If you want to delete a game off of your vita memory card to make room for another, you have to delete its save data as well (at least, this was my experience multiple times).

          • RedSuisei

You know, you can backup your digital games and the save data to your PC.

          • Andar

I actually tried doing that with Atelier Totori+. When I went to move it back to my Vita later, that data was somehow corrupted and I lost my save.

          • Aesma

Save it to PS3 if you have? I did that and my data is just fine.

          • Andar

That’s actually not a bad idea for next time…except that my PS3 YLOD’d last month. I’m gradually getting this feeling my Sony consoles are turning on me.

        • SaiyanJedi_Trunks

The Vita memory card’s are the biggest issue with all of this due to the price and restrictions of getting Sony brand. You have a great point there for your own game Neppy ;)

I prefer physical releases above all but in the case of say SAO’s release being the first in the West I will take the digital release. Hope it does find the light of day there though. Do the Neptunia games not sell well in the EU or something?

        • Mirai

I agree, I dislike digital-only releases as well, which is why I will be importing this game from the US to get a physical copy.

      • landlock

Hmm… who are releasing the retail NA version I wonder if Idea Factory are doing it themselves? That will be a first and interesting. Anyway import it is.

      • KnifeAndFork

Because game publishers read these comments…

        *Tobey McGuire face*

    • MrSirFeatherFang

Please take all your digital-only complaints and conversations out of this article. We have all heard it enough already.

      • shadowind

I never knew it was a crime for European gamers to post valid complaints about digital – only releases or do the same rules apply to everybody else? /sarcasm

And besides, a lot of gamers from Europe probably won’t be happy at the fact that it’s nearly 3gb AND it’ll take up a lot of space on a 4gb card as well which’ll mean that people will be forced to delete games if they’ve already used most of the space on a 4gb card.

        • That’s why I upgraded to a 32gb card early on. It was expensive, but with several cross-buy games and the ability to purchase the majority of my PSP library on my Vita (dead PSP >_>), it was most definitely worth it.

        • Revolver Jesus Super Pimp

I wouldn’t say its a crime, just kind of annoying. Just shell out for a bigger card and you’re good to go.

  • might get cuz why not

  • Ninten

You know, I’m not even interested in this, but do companies have something against Europe? A lot of niche titles have been announced for Europe as DD-only recenlty. And if you really want to bring up the “but European games are Multi-5” arguement to which I say “Hell no”, because most niche games here are in english only.

    • RedSuisei

Well, EU got physical for Senran Kagura Burst and One Piece Pirate Warriors, while US only got digital.

Yeah the quantity is not comparable, but even those in the US sometimes have to deal with it as well.

      • Neppygear

We had to wait extra for those, tho. We still have to wait extra, only now we get fewer options!

        • RedSuisei

OP:PW was released in EU first tho.

          • Neppygear

            How awful…

          • Ninten

Keep in mind that EU gets the end of the short stick quite often. Sure, importing isn’t an issue with the Vita, but not everyone wants to import their games for more money than it should be.

          • Neppygear

It is an issue if your account is UK and you want to get DLC… (read: me)

          • Landale

On one hand, the DLC for this is minimal compared to the usual IF/CH DLC load. On the other, the worthwhile DLC from what I gathered from Google’s translation is Plutia and Peashy, which is great, as well as Fairy Fencer F related gear for Neptune, which sounds really nice.

          • Luffink

Yes, importing is not an issue… if you don’t care about DLCs. If I want to play an USA/JP game with any possible downloadable content on my EU Vita I have to but another memory card and reset the settings every time I want to change games because Vita can’t have more than one PSN account

          • Aesma

3 memory cards, 3 accounts. 1 USA, 1 Asia, 1 JPN. It IS a hassle to switch and reset settings every time, but… oh well. I’ll make do.

    • Ladius

That has nothing to do with some imaginary anti-Europe stance, it’s simply that some publishers are based in NA and don’t have the publishing and distribution infrastructure to operate in Europe without a partner, unless they go digital.

This isn’t even an issue limited to IFI, since long-time niche publishers like Aksys, XSEED and even Atlus USA are in the same situation. NISA is pretty much the only US niche publisher that has been able to work directly in Europe without delays, even helping Atlus and XSEED in some instances like Soul Hackers, Ys Memories of Celceta and the latest Etrian games.

There are also instances where games get an European physical release while being distributed digitally in the US, even if those situations are due to other issues, like the old SCEA policy against disc games with a Japanese-only dub track (a policy that has apparently disappeared lately) or the popularity of some anime licenses in Europe compared to the US.

      • Ninten

Alright, if NISA can do it, then why not the other companies? (XSEED is pretty small, that’s understandable)

        • Ladius

NISA is pretty much the only one among niche publisher operating that way in Europe, as far as I know they’ve built a network of partnerships in most European markets with publishers like Tecmo Koei and Namco Bandai in order to publish their games directly and having them distributed by other companies.

All the others, including aforementioned Atlus USA (which is far bigger than any other niche publisher) are still far behind regarding their European policies.

          • Ninten

Thanks for the informative reply! Things are much clearer for me now.

          • Ladius

Don’t worry, I wish all niche publishers shared NISA’s commitment to serving their fans regardless of regions, or were interested in making nice LE sets for pretty much every release like they do.

In many regards (we could include dual audio, too, since that’s a pretty big issue for some people), NISA’s modus operandi is ahead compared to its competitors. Of course, said competitors could be unable to act in the same way because of many economical or logistical reasons (most of which would be impossible to know outside the companies), but hopefully something things will gradually improve in the future.

    • pimpalicious

It happens the other way also. Europe gets plenty of games in retail that the US gets digitally only.

  • Yuzuki Yukari

So we get the lame-ass idol spin-off game as retail but not the actually good 1st game remake

    • MXC

      Different companies dood…

  • Luis Es.

If this comes with the DLC like other remakes such as disgaea and i think atelier I’ll definitely pick this up. If not.. I’ll pass. already played the first game and enjoyed it so I’d want the DLC if i were to play this game again.

    • Pipe

This is essentially a new game. The dialog is new, the story is a bit different, there a new characters (the V makers), you get the goddesses sooner, the goddesses actually become friends this time, the battle system is new, the remake system is new, the candidates are in there, … the list goes on.

  • TheGioG

To all of you brave souls picking up the retail version: never pansy out in embarrassment. Stand tall. Stand tall and proud with this game in hand, cause its gonna be one of the best damn investments you make for your PS Vita.

    • Sapitntapit

      No shame.

    • otakumike

bought every title since the original at gamestop. Can’t stop, won’t stop.

    • Gigan22

Or just order from Amazon. But seriously, super happy to have a retail release. I order from Amazon simply so I don’t have to go anywhere, lol. I did pick up the original Agarest War on 360 at Gamestop when it came out. I don’t remember any weird looks but I’m sure there were after I’d left.

      • Otoya

Amazon? I cant find it, i only found the JP version

        • Gigan22

Sorry, I meant when it goes up for pre-order. I’d bet it will show up soon after we hear of a firm release date.

    • Kornelious

    • Serephitus

lol my local eb’s clerks share my tastes :D

    • Göran Isacson

I think you made a mistake, this should go in a post about Gravity Rush, or perhaps Earth Defense Force, P4G or Rayman Origins?

You know, anything else but a game with a now servicable battle system and repetitive, padded-as-all-hell storyline? ;)

      • darke

Now now, Rayman games are perfectly fun multiplayer even if they’re a bit grindy and padded if you play them singleplayer. Though I’m not going to argue about the over-rated-ness of P4G. :|

    • Darkwing7

There is no shame….. because my gamestop clerk is also buying it

    • John Hayabusa

Time for go Nep Nep. Must get this game.

    • DarkLight

I’ve always wanted to go a gamestore and buy alot of titles like these(niche games) and watch everyone who’d give me werid looks.I’d be loling in my mind so hard.

      • Qunton C.

Other people care far less than you think they do.

    • Keko

After buying so many weeb games, I just don’t care anymore. I’m all like “Sup cashier, give me a copy of Panty Quest XII: Doki Doki Waifu Edition, please”, take my copy, pay and leave…and then I cry myself to sleep at night.

    • NightTray13 .

I remember buying the first Neptunia at gamestop when it was released here… giant artbook and all. If you know what I mean.

      • M’iau M’iaut

Those big boxes were such a bitch to manage. There was literally no where to display them once the reserves were picked up and you still had copies.

    • This game isn’t even that bad. Its not like trying to pick up Senran Kagura in Europe or something…

    • Albert Calderon

This will be nothing compared to picking up the Idol game :/

  • ZetaSiren

Praise the sun! I always hated the battle system in the first game but loved it in Mk 2 and V. Can’t wait. Thank you Idea Factory :)

    • SoundMatch

Really? I love the first game’s battle system and I havebn’t played mk2 or victory yet haha. Could you care to explain why I’m curious.

      • ZetaSiren

I found it to be too stagnant and rather boring. Perhaps how it wasn’t that polished also had a role in it. Personally I just find Mk2 and V’s battle system leaps ahead of the first one and kind of sets up a unique aspect for the series.

      • OneOkami

For me the flow of battles was too slow, even if you skip the enemy turns. I felt even the inputs and animations of the PCs could’ve been more fluid.

There were enjoyable aspects of it such as knowing how to string together some nice combos but it was overall just very slow which for me became a drag and a bore. It has prevented me from ever finishing the game.

        • Loli Summoner

For me. I couldn’t finish the game because the music.

Oh god…those god awful battle themes, it made the game unplayable for me listening to that bull crap.

          • darke

Couldn’t you just turn the music off? I mean, that’s what everyone says when people complain about a particularly terrible English dub. Or is it like the vocals and turning it off doesn’t actually turn all of them off in some games? :?

          • Loli Summoner

I can’t play a game with no BGM/horrible BGM and the voices are fine, I like the dub for the HDN series.

          • darke

Interesting; I was just being slightly irritated about playing Demon Gaze in silence (at work, waiting for a server to build/install) since my mind kept reverse translating the English back to Japanese because I couldn’t hear the JP voices.

I’ve got music on my brain all the time, but save for a few games (Ar Tonelico for instance) I rarely care about BGM since it’s usually so forgettable. :?

  • Son of a Smooosh

Yeah, I think I’ll import too. Being a collector aside, I’m not gonna buy another one of those memory cards. :B

    Worst thing about the Vita.

  • z_merquise

This could be my very first Neptunia game. Nice to see it being remade for the Vita because I personally prefer playing this on-the-go.

  • Sapitntapit

Yesssss, been holding off on starting the series because I’ve been waiting for this to come over. My journey begins.

    • Anesia Hunter

Eh? But there was no need to wait for this since it’s a reboot and is different from the original game. So, technically it’s a new game rather than just a port.

      • Sapitntapit

I’d rather have the game on the Vita than on the PS3, and from what I’ve heard this version is a lot better. No need for me to buy the game twice when I have plenty of others to hold me over until this came out.

  • Sentsuizan_93

Sucks that it’s download only for EU, but hey. I did get (and platinumed) mk2 digitally. I’ll pick it up when it comes out.

  • Wtv

Oh, look, Chian has a face now.

  • tturtlejosh

All of this niche games coming this summer are the reason why I bought a Vita two years ago

  • Kaien

Because fuck Europe. Thank god VGP exists.

    • Son of a Smooosh

      VGP? :V

      • Neppygear

        VideoGamesPlus, I would imagine.

        • Kaien

Yep. Best import shop for us. I got Muramasa with 20€ for Xmas (but no dlc, sadly).

          • FX102A

The DLC can be obtained but you need to get a US account (not hard), and some US PSN cards (ok a bit tougher but not impossible), and another Vita and Memory Card (ah…….yeah that could be a problem).

Then again I always was a bit mad when it came to these things.

          • pimpalicious

Yeah that’s only really plausible for PS3/PS4 where you can have more than one account on it at once. Especially for those that care about trophies.

          • FX102A

Thankfully I care about trophies as much as the wellbeing of garden weeds. In fact it never even crossed my mind when I bought my US Account Vita.

          • shadowind

VGP are awesome for video games! I ordered Catherine Collector’s Edition and Ragnarok Odyssey from them.

          • Demeanor

Dragon’s Crown with artbook and Chronophantasma CE here ^ ^

      • Guest

        Vessel General Permit

    • shadowind

That’s why I’m importing Conception II for the Vita because Atlus doesn’t want my money and other European gamers money for a EU physical release.

  • Kayriss Wins

So much Nep-Nep, so little money *Sigh*

  • natchu96

Every game and their mothers are being localized this summer and fall. What the hell?!?

    . . . I need a bigger wallet.

    • Christopher Nunes

Might need to get a second job then. ^_^

But yeah… too many games coming out this Summer and Fall.

    • Kai2591

      “and their mothers”

    • KnifeAndFork

As long as they’re hot moms I’ll allow it…

  • dragoon_slayer12

Nice. Hopefully the sequels aren’t too far behind.

    • Eric Harris

yeah I would def like that. I seem to prefer collecting for the Vita and never played 2 or 3. Would love to.

      • dragoon_slayer12

I’ve been playing more on my handhelds than my consoles, and RPG’s seem so much better to play on them. Being able to quit on the fly is so much more convenient than finding a save point, turn off, play, repeat. Example, I played FFX on the ps3 for roughly 6 hours, 80+ has been on the vita. As a parent of 4, it’s great

Also, I’m waiting on Rorona so I can start the Atelier games on the vita. It’s only a matter of time

        • Demeanor

Atelier games are SO beautiful, I absolutely love them. Try to get a good pair of headphones or earbuds to enjoy the music to the fullest, friend.
And it only gets better, from Rorona all the way to Escha & Logy. :D

  • This news is awesome. Especially since I just finished watching the OVA to the anime last night. Can’t wait =^_^=

  • EU people please remember you can order the physical NA version of neptunia re;birth1 at playasia. ^^;

    • Shinobikens

Or you could get it from NA Amazon

      • amazon is more difficult since you can only pay with credit card :/
        whereas playasia accepts paypal.

        • Shinobikens

Does playasia allow PayPal or something?

          • yep.

    • Romored

Importing is not the problem, here. The fact is that imported copies do not support the internal EU market. I’d like to buy the game from my country, but I prefer to have a physical copy.

And imported games, on PSVita, make DLC buying/download a complete hassle.

  • Pichu0102

Wait, I thought this was already announced?

    • Landale

Announced that it would be coming, yes. There’s more details on it now though.

  • AnonymousNaruto2000

I was waiting for this announcement. :D
I’ve been wanting to try this series for a while, and this was a good chance

  • Kami nii

Finally!! Finally!! I can finish the game and get the true end!! I finished my Japanese ver. but of course I don’t understand most of it and I only got the Normal End Finally!!! Thank You For this!! :D

  • Joshua Myers

Might have to buy a vita for this XD

  • :-D yes!!! Vita’s getting more playtime!

  • NeptuniasBeard

Hopefully this doesn’t have Victory’s flaw that made Makers completely irrelevant… Either way, can’t wait to get my hands on this remake

  • Yes! *u* But please, after August. I won’t have money until then :C

  • idrawrobots

is the dungeon crawling improved? because that is a bit meh in the original.

    • refrain

      Completely different

      • idrawrobots

in a good way I assume?

  • Yan Zhao

    Any collector edition for this?

  • Loli Summoner

    Day one purchase.

  • All Fiction

I would like to formulate some digital-only complaints and conversations regarding this “fuck Europe” situation, but before I would like to know the amount of data it takes on the Memory card. I didn’t say anything for Muramasa Rebirth because it was less than 700 MB and because Aksys had the decency to use the real $/€ instead of the retarded 1$ = 1€.
Does someone know the amount for the japanese version ? I guess it should be almost the same (+ the data for the cringeworthy but alas necessary English dub)

  • Kornelious

Alright! I guess that !f International have proved themselves……But, I will respect them even more if they make some LIMITED EDITIONS :D
Can’t wait for this release, but I’m starting to worry just how many games developers can shove into the 3-month span of Summer……..Hey, DAMN IT WALLET GET BACK HERE! >:)

Oh and sorry Europe. I feel like you guys always get the bad end of this deal :(

    • All Fiction

Sometimes we get some stuff a bit earlier, but regarding Vita, it’s a safe bet to say that we always get the bad end

  • ivanchu77

I don´t mind it being Digital, but i don´t have enough space for more games in my Vita…. and if i delete the games i have i lost their saves…..

anyone know a way to delete games while keeping the saves safe? i know the PSN plus method but…. i woud rather use one that is free if there´s one

    • Malon

Transfer them to your pc device or a PS3. Your saves are safe !

Anyway, I’m importing. I don’t have any space left on my memory card (8GB, they’re too damn expensive!) and I don’t want to delete Totori nor Meruru. I love you girls. :'( :'( :'(

    • Listen to Malon; I back-up all my PS1, PSP and Vita games and saves to my laptop, or a PC or PS3 would suffice. The only problem with Vita-to-PS3 transferring is that you need to be logged into your PSN account to do so.

  • shadowind

    I’m just disappointed that it’s digital in Europe… :(

    • SaiyanJedi_Trunks

*gives tissue* I do understand. I prefer a physical release but am open to new properties using the tactic to test the waters (which this isn’t). Hopefully in the future.

      • shadowind

        *takes tissue*

  • SaiyanJedi_Trunks

    Wow…downvotes have returned?

  • KazukiNanbu

    my wallet is crying now

  • nathaniel

i would understand a colon, but a semicolon? i think that’s the first i’ve ever seen one used in a title.

    • Romored

      Never heard of Steins;Gate?

    • darke

Japanese seem to find random punctuation (like random English) to be cool.

    • DyLaN

Aside frm every entry of the “;” series, there also the VN/anime Myself;Yourself.

      • darke

Amazing, I believe that, unusually enough, is actually a correct use of a semi-colon! :?

        I’m somewhat shocked. :?

  • mike dickson

*looks at wallet * the flames they are increasing damn you summer why you so good

  • chroma816

I’ve been meaning to get into this series – this’ll be a great start.

That said, there are so many games being localized this year that it’s incredible, and a large amount are (thankfully) for the Vita. If last year was “Year of the 3DS”, this year it’s the Vita’s turn.

  • DarkLight

Yep,its definately the year of the vita!

  • chronocide

It’s a great year to be a Vita owner. A GREAT YEAR.

    • Romored

“It’s a great year to be a[n American] Vita owner. A GREAT YEAR.”

      • chronocide

        :D Joke’s on you, I’m not American!
So maybe… “It’s a great year to be a[n English speaking] Vita owner”?

        • darke

It’s a great year to be a non-R1 Vita owner? Except that’s only going to happen when you can have more then one account on a Vita at the same time. :P

        • Romored

I actually don’t mind English-only games (most games published in Europe are like that, after all, I have no problems playing them). But I do mind digital-only releases XD

      • ShadowDivz

        *music stops*

        I’M CANADIAN!

        • Romored

Isn’t Canada in America? XD I didn’t say United States.

          • ShadowDivz

            …Well played.

          • Romored

You know, I honestly don’t like the fact that most developers and publishers just talk about United States, when referring to “America” or “North America”. What about Canadians, Mexicans and South Americans?

          • ShadowDivz

            We don’t exist.

  • DividedSeraph

Why is this series so popular? I can’t fathom why Neptunia, where even its most adamant fans freely admit has awful-mediocre gameplay, outsells RPGs that don’t pander to lowest common denominators. Is that really all it takes?

Consider that the Falcom/Ys/Trails games, conversely, barely break even… if that.

    • Aesma

…I think the one that has ‘awful-mediocre’ gameplay is only the first game in the series. The second and third are fun for me.

Instead, I find Falcom, Ys, and Trails to be a bit… ‘generic’, to each their own, I suppose?

    • Arcana Drill

Well their niche is really loyal, and cause its the best of the games that panders this type of taste, it was able to grow up as a franchise, I mean i’m not reaallly on Neptunia, but if somebody wanna play a funny game with an all girl cast with action/rpg elements…. I 100% recommend Neptunia,

Summing up, Neptunia is made for a type of audience that is really hardcore and pretty loyal to the franchise (there are people who gonna buy Vitas for the spin offs!)

And different people different strokes. Just cause you cant enjoy a game it doesnt mean it will fail, and games you love will be successful.

    • RedSuisei

While I do like Ys/Trails games, they are pretty generic, typical JRPG.
No matter how good they are, I will get bored if all I’m playing is only
those kind of games. Games like this offer good alternative; they are
light, they are humorous, perfect for when I got bored with all the more
serious, typical JRPG. And what do you know, often the lighter JRPGs actually have more enjoyable gameplay.

And AFAIK only the first game is criticized even by fans; later games gets much improvements.

    • Landale

The gameplay isn’t really the main draw, and to be completely honest mediocrity isn’t inherently a bad thing. The main draw is the characters and setting really.

The characters are generally pretty interesting, and given that the series has a habit of going with alternate continuities and timelines the characters can be used differently without dramatically changing them, for example IF and Compa in one game meeting as adults with no prior knowledge of each other, in another taking the “childhood friends romance” angle, and in yet another being sisters. Nothing about their base personality changes, yet playing them differently yields different results. It’s kind of nice.
The setting is quite enjoyable, if only for the sheer volume of gaming and anime related references, both blatant and subtle, both common knowledge and obscure. There may be fanservice, but it’s not all sexual fanservice. Seeing almost every aspect of gaming, the failures and successes, the characters and worlds, the games themselves and the industry that makes them, all being lovingly poked at is really enjoyable.

    • Rentekabond

Cute girls+references+mild lesbianism is all it takes, yes.

    • darke

Basically, like Conception II, the game series doesn’t take itself seriously. So it doesn’t suffer from a lot of the conceits that a lot of JRPGs do, like the FF13 series.

When a series trying to be mature/serious slips up and the plot holes start showing through the cracks, it becomes a train wreck very quickly; whereas a game focused more on light hearted humour and comedy, even if there is a ‘serious’ plot behind it, if the ‘game’ starts showing through, or the ‘seriousness’ falls flat, there’s something else to prop it up.

“Tales of” is if you want to save the world.
“Atelier” is for the time management min-maxers.
“Hyperdimension Neptune’ is for the light hearted humor and 4th wall breaking references.
“Ys” is for the ‘twitch’ gamers.
And “Mugen Souls”/”Trinity Universe” and friends are for taking a micky of JRPGs. :)

They all serve a purpose and it’s nice to have variety.

      • DividedSeraph

What if I enjoy seriousness, I.E. DDS? Which none of those examples really fall under..

        • DyLaN

You do realize the examples he given is not listed under “seriousness” do you?

        • darke

Then play The Witcher or Skyrim or something? JRPGs can’t do serious, they do emo and all examples I can think of they do it badly like FF13 Lightning Returns.

      • I always though of Atelier games as “Save the world? ^%$# saving the world, I got sh*t to alchemize here!”

When every other JRPG falls into saving the world, on a serious note tho, you just get tired of doing it.

So glad the Atelier games exists, sure the time management aspect is a bit off-putting, but get used to it and manage your time well, and you got a great story and a good game to play for hours on end ^ ^

In a way if you really want to stretch it, Rorona was about ‘saving the world, HER world, her shop IS her world,” and similar arguments can be made about the games that came before and after that.

Long live Atelier games ^ ^

        • darke

Yeah, there’a always a bit of sliding between ‘genres’ for lack of a better term.

But for me, Altier always seems to be focused around alchemy and optimising for time since that’s on my mind constantly when playing; saving the world is just a side-quest. :)

    • pimpalicious

There are tons of Ys and Trails games, not sure what your issue is. Apparently they do well enough for Falcom to keep making them. TitS may have done better in the US if it was on a more popular system.

I would like another SMT like Digital Devil Saga though. SMT IV just came out a while ago though so Atlus hasn’t forgotten about the (non-Persona)series.

  • Prinny Dood

Thanks dood! I’ve already preorder mines dood! Does anybody no if going to be a special addition dood!?

  • ShadowDivz

    The battle system of victory?
But HDN 1 had the best battle mechanics ever!

Nothing gets my heart pumping like praying for my characters to use a potion when there’s a 90% chance of them using one…. and then not.

    • mike dickson

a good old flash to the past hey champ

  • benhofb

Awesome! From the looks of it, this game looks pretty fun, so I can’t wait to hear about a more concrete release date!

  • ishyg

Just when all the games are coming out, my parents decided to sell me one of their houses. Can’t pass up on that.

  • Jumbokitty724

I’ve never played a game in the series before but I do own the first one on the Ps3. For those of you that have played the games, What do you guys think?

    • DyLaN

Gameplay is generally agreed to be the worst. For the plot it depends on the individual but its the better part of the game but not without some flaws.

Re;Birth 1 improved the gameplay and the plot so get that instead

  • ZekeFreek

This was before NISA started dishing this series out 20% dubs right?

  • Chatdimension

I hope all the Re;Birth versions of the Hyperdimension games go past the hurdle for those who are trying to get to the level 999 cap, it’s not necessary, but I’d like to more easily and in a more fun way get to that cap. Also hyped for Hyperdimension VII, the other Re;Birth games, the Neptune Complete Music Shares (In the Nifty Neptune Console Box) and the Hack N Slash game. In releases that are soon, I wonder if Neptune PP is any good. It’s a nice series, don’t know how far I’d go with the franchise though. Some of it seems too extreme in tastes…

  • brian

“both at retail and as a download”
    This is quite a surprise?
I really gotta get a second job to afford all this stuff I want.

  • Damn it I wanted retail here in the UK, Well play-asia it is then

Really happy this is coming out to the west

  • Zalin

OK! We getting a physical copy of rebirth good stuff! But that’s only half the battle, now please give us a collectors edition PLEASE!

  • Aqua King

    So… no NISA? RED?

  • Bobby Jennings

I really dont like Victory’s battle system..

  • Taylor Greene

So I have never played any of the Neptunia games before. Would this be a good place to begin?
