Noire’s PlayStation Vita spinoff, Planet Destroyer Black Heart, brings the CPUs back for a strategy RPG. Sting also made a new group of characters that parody video game series and companies.

Ryuka looks like a play on the Yakuza series, which is called Ryu ga Gotoku in Japan. She also has a dragon on her shirt which is reminiscent of the Yakuza logo. Poona is an Opoona joke. While the game is kind of obscure, the main character became a meme in Japan.

Bio is clearly a Resident Evil gag and Ai Masushima is an Idolm@ster joke.

Rid makes fun of the Metal Gear series and Bossa Aizen, but she represents the strategy/simulation game genre. Maybe she’s supposed to represent the Sakura Taisen series.

Little Rain represents the JRPG genre, maybe she’s from Idea Factory’s Spectral series. Not sure who General G is supposed to be. I guess she is Gundam gag.

Planet Destroyer Black Heart is scheduled to come out on May 29 in Japan.

Poor Opoona, just a meme to most, but one of the best games of the 2000s as far as I’m concerned. (sniffle)

Cool to see Opoona back in… erm… avatar parody form?, though. ;)

    • Blueberry

It felt a bit to old-school for me, but Opoona was very charming character!

      • wyrdwad

How was it old-school? It has a battle system unlike any other RPG ever made! ;)

What I liked about it most, though, was the world. It was a game world with its own fully detailed art history, its own entertainment industry, its own politics, its own education system… it was among the most immersive worlds I’ve ever experienced in any RPG, and really made me feel like I was a part of it, giving me my own apartment, my own pets, various forms of employment, etc. That level of detail is so rare to find in gaming, and always appreciated when I do happen upon it.

        • Blueberry

True, old-school graphics, though. Very Dreamcast.

I felt this disconnect with the world and I didn’t get into it. I don’t know. I’m probably too casual for it. Too many menus :P

          • wyrdwad

Wow. Makes me feel old to hear someone regard Dreamcast-style graphics as “old-school.” To me, that’s practically next-gen. I grew up on Atari 2600, NES, Genesis and SNES, so when I hear “old-school,” I think classic 8-bit. ;)

…You ask me, 3D game graphics need to look like Opoona’s more often. It’s such a colorful, fun world with such pleasant, detailed scenery — I prefer it looking unrealistic, because I get enough reality when I’m NOT playing games. ;)

          • Blueberry

I guess the words “retro”, “old-school” and “vintage” are used very loosely and probably incorrectly when it comes to games nowadays ;)
The Gamecube generation has the best graphics to me. All these effects like HDR, motion blur and small HD text makes me feel like my vision is really bad. :P

    • Roger

I really liked Opoona as well, one of my favorites on Wii.
Creative universe, nice OST, charismatic art and characters and a good variety of enemies. Felt very Earthbound-esque to me.
Wish we could see more stuff like it.

  • Landale

Little Rain is based on Little Snow, sometimes just referred to as Snow. And yes that would be from the Spectral series, or rather the Neverland setting in general since not all of the games were “Spectral”. (pic)

  • TrueDefault

Oh gosh, yes!! Ryuka!!! First day purchase!!

    • BossBullet

One of my reason of getting the game now.

  • TheGioG

With what how adorable our chibi genderbent Solid Snake here Rid is, yes indeed Otacon. Just like one of your Japanese animes.

    • God

Good they didn’t put Otacon into this, or the game would have inmediately become a tragedy.

  • Shippoyasha

It’s like these girls have transcended into a realm beyond moé.

    • Slickyslacker

Still, that chibi cleavage on Ryuka and Bio is kind of disturbing.

      Flat is justice.

The patron goddess of Lowee has approved this message.

  • Firion Hope

Ha the metal gear one is pretty great

  • Brandonmkii

I’m really behind the idea of turning genres into ladies. It’s a lot more fun and varied than using companies IMO, and I hope they keep doing it for future games.

    • Landale

It’s less genres at the moment, and more specific franchises. Much easier to define the characters that way. Also to play the different takes on the genres against each other. Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy, Agarest, and Spectral series, definitely some personality clashes there. And frankly I’m hoping the last character slot on the game’s site is for a Phantasy Star girl. DQ, FF, and PS all together on a team? Absolutely glorious.

    • Liamv2

      I’m still hoping for a persona/SMT personification.

  • TheExile285

I’m tempted to make one of these my avatar lol.

  • Liamv2

Oh god I love the dragon quest personification. Dat shield.

  • Alter

time to change ps profile pic :)

  • fyi1191

    The last set is misleading.

  • D-Omen

Yup, Aizen is a parody of Sakura Wars, specifically of Maria Tachibana:

  • Kayriss Wins

Oh man Lady Waku looks much more elegant than the parody she’s representing lol.

  • fairysun

    K k k k k kawaiii!!

  • KBTKaiser

Generia G is based on the SD Gundam G Generation series. On her character profile, her likes are the three functions to expand your army of gundam units(develop/evolve from existing unit, combining data from two units in your army to form a blueprint registry of a new unit, building new units from a blueprint registry.)

  • Merleawe

I loved Opoona so I’m glad to see this, in some ways it still lives on!

  • Learii

this coming to the west right?

    • DyLaN

Nope. The game not even out in JP IIRC.

  • WhyWai

so cute. Hope they make Nendoroids out of this game.
