<< Last week’s software sales chart

<< How to read and understand sales

Last week was Japan’s Golden Week holiday, and as such, popular software saw a slight increase in sales, alongside a boost in hardware sales for the Nintendo 3DS. Unfortunately, the 3DS was also the only platform that saw any kind of meaningful boost in sales during Golden Week.

The game that benefited most from the holiday was Yo-kai Watch, selling 62,777 copies during the week. Close behind it was Mario Golf: World Tour, which was a new release for the week. Mario Golf sold 49,889 copies.

Other recent popular releases such as Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment and Theatrhythm Final Fantasy: Curtain Call also managed to stay in the top 5 for the week, but sales took a dive following the #6 spot on the software sales chart. Everything below #6 sold less than 10,000 copies.

This is an alarming state of affairs, but unfortunately, it isn’t unexpected. Golden Week sales weren’t particularly impressive last year either.  Here’s a look back at the top-20 software sales chart during Golden Week for the past four years:

One has to wonder if the entire consumer product industry in JPN has been also experiencing decreased golden week spending.

    • idrawrobots

Very true Jolteon. That would be interesting to see.

    • Brion Valkerion

Its more a travel holiday than go buy video games. Most people use golden week to take the family to the beach/touristy area. All the tourist areas have sales/events so yeah the consumer product stuff takes a hit. But if you own a cozy rental spot by the ocean in Atami or something #bandarasgif because you are making a ton of money lol.

… or are selling refrigerators always see crazy sales on them during golden week haha.

  • otakumike

Yep. What else can be said about the state of gaming in Japan at this point? While the west sees console releases breaking records, here there just can’t. Maybe when Mario Kart releases and ps4 gets FF15 or Kingdom hearts 3? Whatever the case, it’s a sad state of affairs.

    • ConkerBFD

      Probably Persona 5:
I’m still waiting for The Last Guardian, hope they too!

      • AkuLord3

He was talking more about nex-gen games which P5 isn’t one (thankfully) but Last Guardian…sigh

    • AkuLord3

Well not like there’s much games interesting games to buy, sure yeah consoles aren’t doing well but no point in rushing out for things that don’t have anything good yet. Time will tell, really right now doesn’t really prove much.

    • 0nsen

What’s sad? I see it as a way of complaining about short life cycles of those consoles. We shouldn’t even be in the fourth generation by now if every console could last for 15 years. But instead of bringing us quality games to consoles we already own, we get new consoles with meh games every couple of years.

  • Son of a Smooosh

I can only repeat myself again, dat Youkai Watch!
Really hope their considerations about a western release will turn into something concrete soon, would love to play it myself.

  • Tarkovsky

Not surprised to be honest. Nobody really spends money on games during Golden Week. Money is spent more on travel. And as expected, Yokai Watch doing well. Level 5 are making loads of money off that franchise.

  • 3PointDecoupage

Every single person in Japan owns Yokai Watch and theyre still being coy about bringing it here…

    • Slickyslacker

Treehouse, please…drop a ghost shaped apple on my head this June.

    • ishyg

Same can be said about MH4, but at least we have 4G to hold on to.

    • darke

Given the 15 million 3DSes sold vs the less than a million Yokai Watch, I think you’re embellishing things a little. :P

  • Audie Bakerson

Interesting to see Child of Light, a foreign game with little marketing, in the top 10. I have seen comments that despite being a foreign game, it felt very Japanese.

  • While this is a sad state, I’m glad that the Vita has been, so far, incredibly consistent with it’s sales. It’s what I could truly hope for, for the system.

  • urbanscholar

I’m very interested to see what our effects of the tax hike has done with spending overall in Japan. You know like “buckling down” on spending anything and everything. I wonder though will we eventually see consumer purchases based on IP recognition only/mainly?

    • Brion Valkerion

It will not affect the average person’s spending on stuff, at least it does not seem to be. On purchases like, music, games, and movies the tax hike is only a few extra dollars on average not counting super over priced limited/collectors stuff (thats when you start seeing $5~10+ more) Of course it affects those who have an amazingly strict budget but if an extra $2.75 makes you not buy something… probably are not in the financial situation where you should be buying it in general imo.

Now cars and houses and stuff, thats where the tax hike is going sting. Also why there was such a large spike in their sales before it hit.

  • Solomon_Kano

Goddamn, Yokai Watch is the gift that keeps on giving. It should definitely clear that 1 mil shipment before July.

  • Hau To

I wonder if everyone now is buying Youkai Watch so they can get ready for that transfer of Youkai to the sequel.

  • TheBlackRabbit

psvtv should die, ;D………an ps vita should rise up from the ashes…..:D ………never going to happen…

    • darke

VitaTV can only die once they’ve allowed multiple simultaneous accounts on the Vita. :)

  • Renaldi Saputra

    very strong youkai watch
its first week sales was only 50k, but now even it can reach 70k, so magic…
the anime is very successful if I said..

  • ronin4life

Wait… Child of light here confuses me.

On the Famitsu chart, they sold the *EXACT* same on PS3 and PS4. Further, I saw no WiiU option(On either list) and thought this was Download only, which Media Create doesn’t cover?

    ? _.

  • decus

Been wondering, do they not track 2DS sales or is 2DS baked into the normal 3DS numbers? Kind of odd to me that they separate the XL and normal 3DS sales to begin with since that’s akin to separating, say, PS3 slim with normal PS3 when both were on the market and nobody did that.

    • Tg

These are the numbers for Japan only, right? The 2DS was not released in Japan.

  • darke

Nearly a year old game thoroughly trounces a brand new Mario title on release?

Have to worry about Nintendo’s strategy of relying on 1st party titles to sell it’s WiiU, if it can’t even sell them on it’s console that it has a ton of already sold. :(

  • Oliver Teigaga

Sony need to be more creative with the Vita’s promotion. The Vita hasn’t had a decent hardware bundle or special edition release since December.
