Fans Are Hoping To Make Mega Man Legends 3 On Their Own

By Spencer . May 25, 2014 . 10:43pm

Capcom cancelled Mega Man Legends 3 for Nintendo 3DS, but a group of fans are attempting to make the game on their own using Unity. Our Own Mega Man Legends 3 is a volunteer project  and the team released this teaser video in hopes of finding more help.

The fan fueled Mega Man Legends 3 is looking for programmers (C# is the main language) or people familiar with tools like NGUI or MMDforUnity to work on the game. Music and sound effect creators are also needed to complete the game. Collaborators will communicate with each other over Skype.

It’s great to see Mega Man Legends 3 revived by passionate fans and since so many designs were shared publically through the devroom it will be interesting to see how the fan made game continues the Legends story.

“Fine, We’re going to make our own Mega Man Legends 3, with blackjack and hookers!”

Oh, the wonders of Unity. It truly is a wonderful engine

    • TheGioG

Bracing for the worst, but I hope and pray that this somehow becomes a Capcom-approved fan game like that Street Fighter X Mega Man game that happened a while back.

  • Zangetsu777

LOL! Capcom is stupid As Fuck for letting Mega Man Die. This plus the Mighty No. 9 campaign should be proof enough that there is high demand for MegaMan.

    • JMaster3000

There’s being stupid and then there’s being capcom.

      • Ric Vazquez

        LOL so true

  • DeAndre Atchison

Probably gonna get mugged for this, but I didn’t think that this would still be that big of a deal

  • Go2hell66

    lawsuit incoming

    • Shippoyasha

They should be really careful about advertising this. These projects should try to remain in the dark until it’s too late to stop it once it’s out in the wild with a completed work. I can’t believe they still haven’t gotten the hint with all the other projects that were given cease and desist warnings and promptly shut down.

      • Silver Citizen

        My thoughts EXACTLY.

      • Yuuki

if they change enough then capcom cant do anything, look at mighty number 9.

      • PreyMantis

Hey, you never know. Mother 3 fan translation was finished and Mother 4 is on the works as we speak; yet, Nintendo haven’t a thing to stop them.

        • kaotron

it’s easier to stop a fan made game(in progress) than it is to stop an english translation patch for a game that was on the original nes.

even today nintendo goes out of their way to cut down fanmade pokemon mmo games with C&D…

          • thnkgod4mentlillness

I think it really depends on what series it is… Obviously Nintendo doesn’t give a damn about MOTHER, but Pokemon is their cash cow. If everybody’s playing free Pokemon games, Nintendo can’t reap all the sweet yens themselves (even though we all know they can make an assload off any new Pokemon game, whether it sucks or not).

          • kaotron

exactly, they only care about their cashcow series that bring the most $, I’ve heard that one time they actually stopped a group from playing a smash bros melee(the old gamecude one) tournament because they were being uptight.

          • thnkgod4mentlillness

It’s sad… I miss the days when all these companies tried to make fans happy.

          • kaotron

yeah, the sad part is that it was only a bunch of fans that wanted to play some old gamecube game but because of some copyright it had to be canned.

if I found out my favorite game series were run by such douchebags I’d either stop playing their games completely or just pirate it so it wouldnt support them. But smash bros has a huge fanbase and no matter how bad nintendo is it’ll always have its hype

    • Pfft. Like Capcom cares about Mega Man these days.

If they’d take a board game pitch, and throw an official license at it*, they won’t do anything to these guys.

      * –

    • DaiRaiOh

Not really though. Free, and can’t really be shutdown on grounds of hurting business as Capcom has made it clear that they aren’t making Legends 3 themselves. Not to mention Japan tends to be very okay with fanmade games for franchises. There are tons of them there.

    • thnkgod4mentlillness

Capcom probably doesn’t care. They hate Megaman and everybody who plays it.

Hell, Shigesato Itoi said he’d love to see somebody make Mother 4, and that’s exactly what happened. It’s coming out in several months.

  • Kroz

“we cancelled it because fans didn’t contribute to the dev room, so we assumed people were not interested”, is the gist of what they gave as a reason…..and yet their was a huge petition and all these complaints. Now fans are making it themselves, the whole game 100% (which sounds like a very successful dev room if you ask me). capcom i dont know what you interpreted from your fans but damn were you ever wrong.

“Legends aren’t born, their manufactured”. guess fans are doing the manufacturing part now

    • Yan Zhao

Because it was all an excuse to spite Inafune for leaving them?

    • Ric Vazquez

    • DaiRaiOh

The main thing that came with the no interest thing was the demo version they put out to test the waters. It didn’t exactly do well to say the least.

  • Valtiel Ikari

this, plus the RE2 fan remake could probably teach capcom how to win money, like LISTENING what fans want.

    • thnkgod4mentlillness

I like your Powdered Toast Man avatar.

      • Valtiel Ikari

EVERY body should like my Powdered Toast Man avatar.
BTW, you must read my every comment in PTM’s entrance voice!

        • thnkgod4mentlillness

What if I already read every comment on the internet in PTM’s entrance voice??

          • Valtiel Ikari

then you are doing it RIGHT!!!

  • Arz

First rule of making fan-made game:

    • That only applies when the publisher cares about the IP. I worked on a Star Fox fan-game for SIX YEARS, and Nintendo never did anything about it. And we were not shy about letting people know we were working on it. I know Q-Games (Star Fox Command) knew about it – Dylan Cuthbert sent us a very encouraging letter partway through development warning us about what an undertaking a Star Fox game was, and wishing us good luck! He should know; he was at Argonaut when Star Fox was created ;)

It was pretty well known back around 2008 or 2009, if I recall. I know that some sites ran a story or two on it, including It looked like this:

Nintendo never did anything to us.

Plus, there are TONS of Sonic fangames out there. Sega loves it. It’s good publicity to NOT look like a douche, and – best case scenario – keeps a franchise relevant when official entries are scant (not that Sonic’s ever been one to slack off when it comes to yearly releases).

Finally, Capcom doesn’t shut down any of the 2D Mega Man fangames out there (of which there are TONS). Heck, they even got behind Mega Man X Street Fighter officially, remember? I’d say there’s a pretty great chance they’ll just back off of these guys. They don’t need bad publicity.

    • Lynx

Battle Moon Wars says otherwise. Then again, that’s an odd case.

    • thnkgod4mentlillness

      >MOTHER 4

  • rinalicat

I like this idea a lot but…I’m rather worried about how Capcom will react to it…I do wish them luck though!!

  • in b4 C&D.

Cuz truth be told that is in the foreseeable future.
Now If Capcom were to turn a blind eye (which is unlikely) that would be great.

but If they manage to get the attention of Inafune (which is unlikely but probable) they could get green lighted.

  • Crevox

You guys should seriously watch this. It’s very good.

  • Namuro

As much as I love the fans’ enthusiasm, and spirit to bring this game to life, I just can’t see this ends well…

But, best of luck to them!

  • Good luck to these guys! If this turns out well…. now we can see the Legends story end well… or end in a cliffhanger? Who knows… just a great good luck to them :-D

  • Legends never die.

  • Ouch My Head Said Dionysus

I’ve got a great idea, why not make an original game **inspired** by Mega Man Legends? That way you can bypass the pesky copyright and the fact that Inafune isn’t involved.

  • Prototype_

No, I don’t want a fan made game. I want the real story, the real characters and the real world developed by the real people who made them. You internet posers who all of a sudden took an interest in the game after the last couple of years can have it, I’ll keep holding my breathe for the real thing even if it never comes.

    • Herok♞

We don’t know how long this fan project has been in development and with the dev room the fans were the real people helping to make the game, the only thing we might not get the full version of is the story but even then, if fans make it, it might better than whatever Capcom had in mind

  • Juan Manuel M. Suárez

As impressive as their devotion is, truth is that this game will be fanfiction material at most. They aren’t the ones who created the series, they aren’t privy to where the game’d have went if it’d have seen the light of the day. Only Capcom can fill in those shoes, whether we like it or not~.

    • ネオフォトン ~ Neo

      Pretty much.

But then I’m at that point where I feel people really need to let this go.

      • Nanashrew

Kind of hard too. Kind of hard to let anything Mega Man related go lately because they will announce things then cancel it.

        • ネオフォトン ~ Neo

I cared at one point, but nowadays it’s just hot air. Capcom doesn’t care the least bit, so I find it easier to just let them put their hand on the stove and learn the hard way.

          • Nanashrew

Yeah. Sometimes I try to walk away from it all but something keeps pulling me back. It didn’t help that they even made concept art for a new Mega Man X design as an April Fools joke then promptly cancelled the joke. I was angry at first how it didn’t feel like a joke but when they got rid of it I couldn’t stop laughing at how meta it was.

    • thnkgod4mentlillness

At least they’re doing more work than Capcom would care to do.

    • TrophySystem

I can both accept this, and still decide to play it and enjoy it. Especially since I liked Tau’s MML Abridged, and want to do my own soon, and I like fanfictions in general. They are alright if they are tasteful.

  • Lilburrito

Dunno if I’d say a lawsuit is incoming. I mean look at Mother 4, that was announced awhile ago, has a lot of support and Nintendo hasn’t really done anything to that. :/

  • Mir Teiwaz

As others have said: They should have kept their mouths shut until it was done. I find it highly unlikely that Capcom is going to let this slide.

    • Quan Chi

they can’t really do anything if the ppl aren’t charging for it. if square-enix would have taken the chrono trigger remake ppl to court, square-enix would have probably lost. the fan ppl just got scared lol.

    • Lynx

It’s a doujin game. In Japan, you can technically get away with that. There’s been numerous doujin games based on various properties over the years.

There was a Madoka fan game, Grief Syndrome or something like that, Battle Moon Wars happened, a Touhou SRW clone, Magical Battle Arena, etc. Heck, some even go official in the end.

The thing is though, for it to be a Doujin game, you can’t charge for it.

  • kaotron

Fans: Hey, make a new megaman game!
Capcom: No. How about another installment of street fighter 4?
Fans: At least make a new battle network game…
Capcom: What’s that? Ultra Street fighter 4 with more on-disk DLC?
Fans: sigh…I can’t wait for mighty 9 to come out already.

    • 하세요

At least say “Mega Man fans.” Not all Capcom fans care for the blue guy, like myself besides Trigger. Even then, didn’t they have an interview that Inafune himself canned Legends 3?

      • kaotron

Maybe, I’ve heard from some other sources that inafune still wanted to do a third legends but because capcom is currently being run by morons who don’t want to make money it’s most likely dead(that’s why he left and started 9&gunvolt).

        • thnkgod4mentlillness

          >who don’t want to make money

I think that’s the only thing they want to do, hence rehashing their old cash cows like Monster Hunter and Street Fighter.

          • kaotron

I guess it’d be better to say that they don’t want to *effectively more make money.

There on-disk dlc/other stupid tenancies just piss everyone off, I actually know hardcore RE/SF fans who dropped the series forever just because they hate capcom more than they love the games..

          • thnkgod4mentlillness

I believe it dude. My good friend can’t stand Capcom, and if it wasn’t for Monster Hunter, I don’t think he’d ever support them.

    • ShawnOtakuSomething

      Sigh…… I’m sick of Street fighter 4,

      • thnkgod4mentlillness

But we all know you’re going to buy the next installment of Street Fighter 4…

        • ShawnOtakuSomething

Me?! you must be new here. been a hater of SF4 since ever

          • thnkgod4mentlillness

            It was a joke m8

          • ShawnOtakuSomething

I know horse head girl :3

          • thnkgod4mentlillness

    • Ric Vazquez

      So damn true

    • ishyg

Hmm I think the reason they still cough up SF is that it sells? And not just to the home console bunch, it also includes the arcade market.

If VGChartz is to be trusted though ( general consensus is that it can’t be though haha ), I think the sales aren’t that much different.

And budget-wise I think SF is more costly.

      • kaotron

yeah, SF always had is big audience since the day it started, many get tired of their unnecessary addon adaptions and on-disk dlc methods though.

And they still even have a competitive metagame that a lot of the fans are addicted to.

    • thnkgod4mentlillness

Fans: Capcom, make something we actually want.
Capcom: How about Monster Hunter 4Gx5000nd^3 and Street Fighter 4 Ultimate Pussy Slammin’ International 5th Edition?
      Fans: No thanks.
Capcom: Did you say RESIDENT EVIL 7?!
      Fans: No.
Capcom: Luckily for you we’re going to make it exactly how no fan actually wants it :^)
      Fans: *still fucking buys it*

      • kaotron

Yeah, not only does capcom love to milk a series to death instead of simply just making a proper sequel but they ruin their most populaur series. I remember back in the day when most people loved resident evil and now because of capcom’s idiocy everyone hates it..

        • thnkgod4mentlillness

Yup… I think RE6 was actually somewhat enjoyable as a game, and was better than 5 (at least IMO). But what the hell did they do to the series? I had only played RE2 as a kid, then played 4, so I wasn’t disappointed like many past fans when 4 brought in a more action-based approach. But God damn, 5 was pushing it… 6 is barely Resident Evil anymore…

Also, I love Monster Hunter, but it irks me that each new installment is barely any different. Then, all the Gs and sequels… I mean, 4 just came out but 4G is already on its way. Why didn’t they just include 4G’s content in 4, then add things as DLC if they needed to? Oh wait, I know: money.

          • kaotron

yeah, 4 was surprisingly good while 5 was awful. Some of my friends that are RE fans say that the thing they hate the most is that a horror series turned into a pure action game just like how deadspace use to be scary horror but now everything is played for laughs

      • Daggerfall

is that why capcom needs other company to buy 51% of their shares just to get a flout?

  • Seizui

Hrm, those that say lawsuit incoming, I could see this go the other way. Remember the Megaman X Street Fighter game? It’s a possibility, for PR sakes, that Capcom would possibly back this and say that they sponsored took some part of it (even if to take credit for the development).

    • kaotron

Nope, knowing capcom they’ll do everything in their power to keep shooting themselves in the foot and destroy their fanbases/customers.

      • Seizui

That is the more likely(and tried and true) side, sure.

    • TrophySystem

EA did it suprisingly for Renegade X. They didn’t sponsor it in any way, but they did verbally say they would not take legal action as well as approve them to submit it to indie game contests to win cash prizes despite being unable to sell the game or profit off it’s development.

Maybe Capcom will decide, meh, what the hell, if it costs them nothing then let them advertize the company for free.

  • Zack

Kudos to the fans attempting to make their own Megaman game, but even if they complete it, I won’t want to play it. It’s not Megaman if it hasn’t been made by the creators of Megaman. If they really were fans, they’d have made a complete spin-off loosely based off the Megaman universe instead of thinking they can make better decisions than the company that created the franchise they look so highly upon.

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

They should have keep it under the table till it was done…Capcom is going to shut this down fast. :{ hey don’t get mad,Cappy because fans can get shit done.

    • kaotron

This is reminding me of the many times nintendo has shut-down the fanmade mmo pokemon games.

But I guess this is different since it’s a full game. If they kept it under the rug, finished the unofficial game and made it leak online there’d be nothing anyone can do about it.

      • ShawnOtakuSomething

        yupe because onece its on the internet, its going to get shared and NEVER go way. I hope Capcom doesn’t shut this do or noticed them but sadly they are making to much noise :{

  • J_Joestar

how are they even planning to distribute it?
unless it is just going to be tossed onto the net for free, i can’t see it getting through anywhere else while blatantly using the Rockman/Megaman name.

  • Hexodious

The only reasons Capcom would shut this down is because their fans got more balls and dedication than Capcom themselves.

    • Ric Vazquez

  • 하세요

As others have said, as much as I’d kill for MML3, this simply cannot fill the void. Props for trying, but I’ll have to pass.

  • Yan Zhao

Im happy this is happening but do they not understand copyright laws at all? This thing will be shut down instantly once Capcom finds out.

  • Ni ~Algidus~

They should change the name and get rid of the “3”. This alone is more than enough for capcom to shut down the project.

    • TrophySystem

Not entirely. Renegade X is a C&C Renegade sequel by Totem Arts completely outside of EA. They do it without any monetary ties. As long as it’s hands-off-money developed, the legal action against them is possible but too likely to fail.

I mean, it is pretty much the same protection that covers Abridged Series.

  • Kamen Rider Rayz

If you can make Megaman Legends 3, then no doubt you could be able to make Megaman ZX3 in the future as well! Great job guys! :D

  • Roger

All tears were not in vain

  • Learii

where mega man I haven’t see him in the video plus he don’t have red hair or whatever

    • British_Otaku

Volnutt (the Mega Man of this series) apparently was stuck on the moon at the end of Megaman Legends 2, presumably after a boss fight, sacrifice or some other closing game thing.

This is why you may have heard of the “Get Me Off the Moon” projects by fans:

      Or the Facebook page:

Capcom had a paid demo planned for the 3DS featuring this red haired fellow, showing off familiar but also new mechanics including a another heroine as a sidestory or prologue which was going to lead into us playing as Megaman again.

      9 minutes of footage:

As you may know, the project was cancelled weeks before the paid demo should have released and due to notable fan investment, even pulling us in to vote on concepts and have a degree of connection unusual short of kickstarter projects (which weren’t even a thing then and this was a big publisher’s game), we weren’t too happy with that.

  • Mc-kun

I’ll support this project if I can figure out what they need exactly (besides what’s mentioned in the article.) I pretty much hate Capcom for obvious reasons and will do anything to give them the finger.

  • Mike Moran

Fan fiction is not the way to go. Make the engine and resources available, find some way to monetize the game and then ask Capcom for permission to use the rights to the franchise. Come up with a split revenue model so Capcom has reason to say yes and the developers get at least some kickback for their work, and request Inafune and all other writers provide the details of how they wanted the story to play out.

  • thnkgod4mentlillness

Why does Capcom hate its fans so much?

    • Anewme…Again

Because like every other huge corporation out there they only care about money.
And according to them Megamen don’t bring them enough money.

      • thnkgod4mentlillness

Apparently several million dollars from every country the game is released in doesn’t make them enough money… rather: doesn’t make the amount of money those god damn cash hounds want. A new Battle Network even even make them a decent amount of cash, but it wouldn’t make them billions so they won’t do it.

    • TrophySystem

Why does Capcom/EA/Sony/Jagex/Kerug hate their fans so much? Megaman Legends dropped? Street Fighter 5 console locked? Planetside 2 getting terribad changes? The changes to Runescape Post-2011? Kerug actually having DRM on their coffe for fucks sake? Why do company shoot their fans, in the face, and proceed to use the holes for pleasure-making purposes? I never understood game developers and their genuine disinterest in making a “happy” product…

  • TrophySystem

Sadly, if they did that, I would have more respect for them than I ever have thought possible.
