Nintendo File “Delta Emerald” Trademark In Japan. Yep, That Sounds Like Pokemon

By Ishaan . May 29, 2014 . 9:00am

Nintendo have filed a new Pokémon trademark in Japan, Japanese blog Hachima Kiko reports. The trademark is titled “Delta Emerald”.

Nintendo and The Pokémon Company recently announced Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, remakes of Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire for the Nintendo 3DS. The third, updated version of Ruby/Sapphire was Pokémon Emerald, so the “Delta Emerald” trademark fits right in.

Of course, this doesn’t necessarily mean that there’s a third version of the Ruby/Sapphire generation games coming; after all, Pokémon FireRed/LeafGreen and Pokémon HeartGold/SoulSilver—all of which were remakes of past games—had no third version.

(You may also recall that Nintendo once filed a trademark for Pokémon Grey, which everyone figured would be the updated version of Pokémon Black and White, but nothing came of that either.)

We’ll have more information on “Delta Emerald” if further information is ever shared on the trademark. In the meantime, it can join the other mystery Pokémon trademarks like Pokkén Fighters and Pokétouch.

  • That guy

Friends looks like Pokemon Delta is…forming up.

  • Nanaki

Mayhaps this could be the first instance of 3 versions coming out for remakes, for their respective legendary mascots. I wouldn’t mind that personally.

    • Perhaps.

    • Keksus

I would mind that because it would just maximize the cashgrab. I’m already mildly annoyed by the 2 version stuff. But ok: It makes sense so people actually trade Pokémon and so. And I also have 2 friends playing it. So there’s nver a problem when I want a specific Pokemon.

But 3 editions? I mean the 2 remakes are based on Emerald anyways.

      • Kelohmello

Yeah, agreed. This time around it’s super unnecessary, all of the extra stuff from Emerald should just be in OR/AS and that’s it.

        • Steven Higgins

Unless they make the stories more like Ruby and Sapphire, where one team is good and the other is bad as opposed to Emerald where they were both bad. Then Delta Emerald would make perfect sense.

      • GOLD

when did they say the remakes were based on emerald?

        • celery

HGSS included features from Crystal, but just applied the version differences of Gold and Silver to the titles. Likewise, it makes sense for these games to be “Emerald remakes,” but with Ruby and Sapphire version differences.

          • GOLD

so no official word just conjecture? if they decided to base the remakes off of emerald they would pretty much nullify the differences between what constituted ruby and sapphire ( as far as story is confirmed). this leads me to believe that the or/as stories will be based on the stories told in the original games. possibly rewritten to bring them to the standards of the current generation games.

          • celery

There definitely have to be some changes due to the mechanics of the abilities Drought and Drizzle being changed in gen 6. So I’m sure they could find a way to incorporate some aspects of Emerald’s plot while making the necessary changes. But of course, nothing has been confirmed at this point.

  • Tylor Boreas Makimoto

Didn’t they also have WaterBlue trademarked a long time ago?

    • Nope.

There is a hack called that though.

      • Hiro

According to, there was a trademark for that, back in 2004.

        • Kamakuma

I thought that was OceanBlue though…?

  • TheGioG
    • Or good old Chaos Emerald.

    • DeAndre Atchison

I’d buy the hell out of it.

    • Internet is Crash

Are you a boy or a girl?
      What is your name?
      Is your mom alone?

    • Hinataharem

Aw man. ORAS and Emerald Splash would go way too well with each other

  • Ah yes. Delta. Triangle. Greek letter.

  • One of my friends theorized that this might be secretly a sequel-esque title if it materializes.

The games will probably be going through a rewrite regardless, story-wise, so who even knows what Nintendo is thinking here.

  • Seth

I wouldn’t get excited if I were you. This isn’t the first time Nintendo has registered Pokemon trademarks, never to do anything with them. Another example is when Nintendo registered ‘Water Blue’ when FRLG came out. Nintendo wants to cover their bases.

    • BleuVII

I came on here just to type this. You beat me to it.

  • flameraver64

Dunno how I feel about this. If it is, as someone suggested below, a straight up sequel to the Hoenn remakes, then maybe I’d feel a bit better, but a remake that also releases a third version sounds like way too much for me.

  • 하세요

It can’t possible be what we think it is, though. It just wouldn’t make sense. Remakes always have what the fusion version had, so it would be a fusion of a fusion? I dunno, I’ll let this ride out and not jump to any conclusions.

  • Pokemon will never die lol =)

    • Masa

      wish it did.

      • Hexodious

        Fanbase’s faut.

      • God

Look at this monkey! You made him cry, you bastard!

        • Nightmare637

That is possibly the most frightening picture I’ve ever seen.

          • God

I’m guessing you are new to the internet, here is a small tutorial, google Boku No Piko.

          • Nightmare637

Nah I just REALLY hate monkeys.

            they terrify me.

      • Lastlight

I’m just waiting for that new Digimon game

  • ギャビン

  • FivePointedTheStar

I’m sure that they do this just to make sure that they have the trademark, and so no one else can take it. It’s a matter of… insurance, I guess.

    • Ricewarrior

      I hope so.

I’m going to be annoyed if they released another enhanced version of a remake of a already released game which already had a enhanced version.

It’s bad enough with the official releases expected to get an enhanced version, let’s not move this onto remakes.

Starting to sound like Capcom here.

      • FivePointedTheStar

They might end up using Delta Emerald in another 10 years. We’ll never know until it happens.

      • ronin4life

Or they could just release All 3 at the same time, making this the first Pokemon split 3 ways instead of 2.

  • BleuVII

Delta… commonly used to denote “rate of change”

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

wow so they are going to make a Emerald remake? or….is this something not dealing with pokemon

  • Masa

    Gotta milk em all!

  • Slickyslacker

Green and Crystal weren’t remade: maybe this means the end of the “third game in a generation isn’t remade” tradition.

    • DragKudo

They weren’t remade because they were included in their remakes HG/SS had Crystals story. And Yellow was the third game of first gen but it followed ash not red.

If they remake this, then everyone will see they really just want money and the Hoenn fans will eat it up and try to justify it.

      • celery

You’re right about the remakes, but I just want to point out that Blue is the third version of gen 1. Red and Green were released first, then the updated Blue version later. Yellow is the fourth game of gen 1, and as you’ve said it’s an anime spin-off.

But that aside from that you’re absolutely right. There’s no need to release an Emerald remake when they can include aspects of Emerald in ORAS just as they included Blue in FRLG and Crystal in HGSS.

  • Hexodious

    Soul Sacrifice Delta
    Delta Emerald

Monster Hunter Pokémon confirmed for the Wii U.

    • Tenabrus

I just realized how great a pokemon game with monser hunter esque gameplay would be.

      We need this nao.

      • Nobody

I, too, came to the same conclusion after reading your post. I second your notion!

  • KH1989b

Emerald was the best. I hope they release all 3 together

  • Kornelious

A THIRD one! Nintendo you have doomed us all!!! X(

  • Buitronthecrazy .

  • Brion Valkerion

Most likely filed for when the few thousand people try to ride of the pokemon hype for their own gain. Same reason any game company files several tm when they announce something. CoD ect. does the same thing .

  • Ben Green

They also trademarked Water Blue. lol look how that turned out

  • DragKudo

    Should have been Epsilon Emerald

    • Lambda Emerald

      • DragKudo

Epsilon because it the fifth and Emerald is the birthstone of May the fifth month.

      • 古戸ヱリカ

We’ll compromise and go with Lambda Delta Emerald.

  • Rion

This just seems like what they always do….trademark names so other people won’t have those names to make money! I would’t get too excited/annoyed about a third version…

  • awang0718

A Pokemon Delta Emerald could come in 2015, along with Pokemon Z. That would be intersting.
The definitive version of X/Y and an enhanced version of the definitive version of Ruby/Sapphire in the same year = $$$

  • CureMarine

Everyone, please remember they have also filed trademarks for Gray and WaterBlue and we never got those games either.

  • TerrenceEncore Jones

I really hope that these games become more than just remakes of the originals. They have just got to add some new content somewhere. It is pointless to just re-release the same 3 games with only enhanced graphics.

    • Bacon_n_Lettuce

If it’s anything like the past remakes in the Pokemon series, you really shouldn’t have to worry about that at all.

  • Blaz

  • Postnjam

Hm, This might happen as pokemon crystal remake didn’t need a remake as much as the only changes I can think of in that game was gender selection and a new legendary. Which were both in the remakes anyway. It’s also very specific.

  • Nobody

This game may actually be coming since the game has actually existed before, as opposed to Pokemon Grey (yes, I know that this still doesn’t mean it will be made since a remake of Crystal was never made despite it’s older siblings being remade). Plus, the Hoenn remakes would feel incomplete without it (to me, at least). I will be skipping Ruby and Sapphire for year to see if the game is actually being made. If so, I’ll just wait for that.
