Nexon’s Dragon Nest Is Headed To The Silver Screen

By Eugene . June 1, 2014 . 11:01am

One of Nexon’s main online games is its third-person action RPG Dragon Nest. The game is being adapted into a full on theatrical movie. Really. And it’s called Dragon Nest: Warriors Dawn.

Oh, and the full 3D animated movie is being produced by the High School Musical producer. Really. Here’s the poster if you don’t believe me.

While you wipe your collective jaws off the floor, you can feast your eyes on the English trailer above, which tells us that Dragon Nest: Warriors Dawn is going to be a loving, romantic comedy with a coming-of-age twist. Maybe.

Okay, so it looks like it’s more a quest to defeat the big bad dragon, with the various classes from Nexon’s game taking on starring roles. They do appear to have names too, such as Liya the Archer or Algerta the Sorceress.

I can see the misgivings from a mile away, but the trailer looks great and the story should be interesting—especially to those of us with young sons who’ve had quite enough of “Let it Go”—and it looks like it’ll follow the game faithfully in name at any rate.

Thanks, ThisisGame.

Oddly enough, this reminds me of another thing:
Has there been any more news on that live action Bleach movie?

    • Bleach movie? I’m still waiting for that Monopoly movie that was apparently announced not that long ago.

    • Hexodious

The Bleach movie can’t be worse than that DBZ Movie, right?

      • Is it made in Hollywood? If not, then it can’t be worse, right?
        … Right?

    • Masa

I doubt it, after the anime was cancelled as hardly anyone watched it, would be crazy to go ahead and make a movie.

  • KuroNathan

highschool musical? What? did they grab the cheapest producer they could find and shoved the project onto him?

    • 古戸ヱリカ

No, that would be the producer to Sunday School Musical.

    • From Producer of:

      Meet the Robinsons
      High School Musical
      Kung Fu Hustle

  • Oguri Murasaki

    What in tarnation?!

  • Kroz

I think this is the most weirdest piece of news I’ve seen on this site…

  • Postnjam

They could make it an authentic experience by having a text box at the side that spams gold farm ads.

    • Kumiko Akimoto

If only it were there was an mmo where that didn’t exist.

  • pekikuubik

Seems to be a prequel to the game or at least based on the events of the Black Dragon Raid. A bit sad that they felt the need to add that idiot protagonist and Liya to the cast to make it a romantic comedy though.

  • Looks terrible; IS terrible! I love it!
Oh, the protagonist gets hurt in the crotch at the end of the trailer!
    That is so funny!

  • please…help

  • Kaitsu

Oh god, is the main protagonist that David guy that is really annoying in your quests? I hate him.

  • Masa

from the maker of High School Musical……that’s nothing to be proud of, that monstrosity should never have been made.

    • But he did other, better movies. IMO, they should’ve advertised this without mentioning the unmentionable.

      • Hound

The trouble is that the age/gender quadrants for the consumers that High School Musical and Dragon Nest are aimed at are absolutely different.

The movie will earn a lot more money due to the tag, but the game is likely to suffer heavy disdain after a sudden influx of people following the publicity -.-

        • And I still say that they shouldn’t have mentioned High School Musical as a credit for that Producer. I’m just saying, not mentioning it would’ve help the publicity for the Demographic that they try to aim with this movie. It would’ve soften the blow, at least.

    • Kumiko Akimoto

High school musical was fine for what it was meant to be. It’s not like it was supposed some ground breaking movie, It was a catchy musical for teens. Nothing more nothing less.

  • As someone who used to play the game and liked it a lot, I am disappoint.

This looks really bad honestly. Especially compared to the to the tone of the original story. I wonder whose idea it was to let this see the light of day.

Are they selling the movie to Chinese audiences? They really have a very low rung of quality for animated movies in that market.

  • Anime10121

That pic of “Young Warrior” looked like Jade from Beyond Good and Evil..

  • Doctor Nebula

Once I saw “From the producer of High School Musical” I completely lost it. Although, HSM was quite nice..

  • SerChief

So much great animation, but romantic comedy? WHY can’t it be just a bunch of cool characters fighting baddies in cool animation. I think this movie could be great if it had a plot similar to Lord of the Rings. Leave the “young warrior” out.

  • Ms_Fortune

Wonder if it will have micro transcations.

“Please pay 25 dollars so see this next scene.”

  • Tg

I don’t know what to say. O__O; I don’t know anything about the game, but, “High School Musical”…. Great advertisement hype? :0 *facepalms* We should expect a lot of teenage drama, yeah? D:

  • isotrex

This should’ve been a Dragon Nest musical movie. haha.

  • Daniel Gulyas The only thing I really knew about Dragon Nest…

  • Rose Spinoza

    OH BOY. SO WACKY!!!!111

Is probably what they were going for I guess? But Nah, it just comes off as dumb and trying to hard. I’m glad I never got into the series. So at least I don’t feel disappointed.

The animation looks rough, but the trailer looks heartwarming.

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

I remember hearing about this 2 years ago.

  • Guess

Truth to be told, the animation seems pretty good. The pace of it seems a tad too fast to be comprehended easily but the animation is decent in detail and movement. I can’t say much about the story as I’ve only played a part of it but from the looks of it, it’s likely to be a generalised story where protagonist is a weakling, aims to kill dragon, faces challenges both physically and morally, gets stronger and get a girl while he’s at it. Though this is hard to say, it definitely looks more interesting in the original video (?) . Also, it’s more towards being made in China rather than Hollywood as they usually tend to go for games or extremely popular topics like Mass effect. However, I’m not saying that China is terrible at choice of picking a film or something along those lines, they’ve done quite a number of good films actually, it’s just that it’s sometimes in mandarin and aren’t dubbed or subbed to other languages.

I don’t really mind much about the High school musical series, it’s a decent production. What’s much more interesting would be the fact that one of the producer worked on Kung Fu Hustle, which you can seen some of its characteristics in the trailer, rather than teens singing about breaking social norms despite falling into new social norms. Kung Fu Hustle is quite fun to watch though it can be a bit over-the-top and cheesy but that’s the point of it. Like what some of the users of this thread has said, it’s likely that they’re using the producer’s name for publicity.

Other than that, I would watch it for it’s animation and possibly for it’s storyline because it’s not High School bloody Musical and animation takes a wonderfully long time to do so. I do apologise if this is too long to read. Have a nice day.

  • Vash bane

I haven’t played the game in ages but I do remember after seeing the first cut scene thinking to myself this would make a pretty good anime if that ever happened….and now I see this? lol minus the comedy it looks cool
