Super Smash Bros. Gets A New Boomerang Item

By Ishaan . June 4, 2014 . 5:30pm

Super Smash Bros. has a new item—the Boomerang. Here’s how director Masahiro Sakurai described the item in a post on Miiverse last night:

Here’s a new item that we’ve thrown in—the boomerang. As you’d guess, it’ll fly back into your hands after you throw it, and if you keep catching it, its attack power grows with each throw! However, opponents can nab the boomerang out of the air, so it might be an easier item to use in Smash Run.

Super Smash Bros. will be available on Nintendo 3DS this Summer and on Wii U sometime in Winter. At E3, Nintendo will hold a presentation for the press, followed by a Q&A, focusing on the game.

Cool. Extra points for coolness if it was the Boomerang from Mario Kart 8.

    • SuperSailorV

Which is actually a boomerang flower, which first appeared in Super Mario 3D Land.

      • FivePointedTheStar

Oh Sakurai. A missed opportunity for double points.

      • Time Sage

Which is actually a variation on the Hammer Bros’ suit from all the way back in Super Mario III. You get the powers of a Boomerang Bro. Instead of a hammer Bro.

        • GH56734

You could use a blue boomerang as an item in the Japanese version of Super Mario Bros 3 GBA (SMA4) with the right e-Reader cards (there’s a level where a Boomerang Bro drops it after being killed, or alternatively a card that gives it as an inventory item).
You throw it like the Boomerang bros, except it’s blue, and you have to catch it with B if you don’t want to lose it.

That port also has the cape from Super Mario World, and the Goomba Shoes (with an entire level requiring it) and the Poison Mushroom. It’s the definitive version of SMB3, bar none, no matter how NES purists say about World 8’s palette or whatever tiny nitpick (like the dummied 15 levels being broken in the latter game… despite that they’re never supposed to be playable).

          • Time Sage

Sadly most of us aren’t japanese and thus can’t acess those levels even if we tried.

          • GH56734

You’re not trying hard enough ;)

  • David García Abril

So with Link and Toon Link you can throw two boomerangs one after the other?

  • God

Huh, didn’t know you could use the male version of the trainer, maybe that means you will be able to use Lucina/Chrom as an alter skin to Marth?

    • Kaetsu

That’s kind of different. Male and Female Wii Fit trainers are essentially the same person. Lucina is kind of similar to Marth but still different and Chrom is completely different. If Chrom were to ever be a skin it would be for Ike not Marth but I’m confident he’ll have his own character.

      • This just hit me. They might follow up with SMTxFE after announcing Chrom at E3…like they wrap up the Smash Bros. part of the Direct that introduces Chrom and then Iwata says please look at this and bam SMTxFE trailer.

        • DeadLineDance

If they do both, I will weep tears of joy.

      • DeadLineDance

If they can do a Male Wii Fit Trainer, which is a cosmetic change beyond a palette swap with his own voice pack, I don’t see why they couldn’t do the same for Lucina.

        • Akemi Homura

Lucina isn’t the same character as Marth. It’d create a slippery slope. If Lucina can be an alt for Marth, why can’t Shadow be one for Sonic? Or Roy for Marth? Back in 64, what would’ve stopped Luigi from being an alt for Mario? I’m sure you can see the problems with some of these.

I’d love it if Lucina was in this game, but I’d only want her to be an alt for Marth as a last resort. By that I mean she isn’t considered for a roster spot this game, and IS doesn’t plan to push her. After that, I can only trust that Sakurai will make alts responsibly.

          • DeadLineDance

Ah… you’re probably right. I was just thinking that they would have the same moveset with no changes (because Lucina and Marth are the same class in Awakening), whereas someone like Shadow would be different… nah, you’re absolutely right and I’m just grasping at straws to get Lucy in the game :P

          • J_Joestar

wel as for story-based similarities, even Tiki confused Lucina for Marth at first so there must be a stronger similarity beyond just class.

          • God

Shadow’s a completely different character than Sonic, not only in personality, but also in moveset.

Roy may be a skin for marth, but the difference in size may be an issue, since Lucina and Chrom have never been in SSB, they could perfectly be the same size as Marth.

And about Luigi, Nintendo has always wanted for Mario and Luigi to be separate characters, and i doubt they would have been able to make him too diferent as an alter skin for a Nintendo 64 game.

          • Akemi Homura

“Shadow’s a completely different character than Sonic, not only in personality, but also in moveset.”

Exactly. Just like Chrom and Lucina are to Marth. If Lucina was made an alt for Marth, even though she was a different character who could have her own unique moveset, there would exist a precedent. And what worries me is.. where would it end?

          • God

Not really, Shadow mostly uses weapons and chaos control, not to mention instead of running or turning into a ball, he has rollerskates, both Lucina and Marth are sword users, both use the Falchion, there should be no difference between them except for their fighting style, and it IS possible for their swordplay to be the same, since it’s passed down through generations.

      • God

Actually, Chrom and Lucina have the same swordplay style, as revealed in the game, so they probably would be skins for the same character. Let’s just hope he does.

    • lemon

Please no. Those are completely different characters while the fit trainer is just two versions of the same avatar.

  • Linhua

… i’m thinking they had it planned to release the news on this item when Mario Kart hit the shelves… lol.

    • AuraGuyChris

Why can’t anybody really remember that this Boomerang originates from Super Mario 3D Land?

      • k.b.a.

Because they didn’t play it simple. Good look for the item tho.
Heres hoping a new character is announced. Plenty disappoint with marth and Ike tbh. I’d like an axe or spear man. Ike and marth are plenty fun in melee and brawl. Wish they’d mix it up for this go round

  • NintendoPSXTheSecond

So many Mario and Zelda items, wow!
Then again, I won’t see these items more than once anyways lol

  • Ooh I like

  • Göran Isacson

I can just imagine Link players being cheeky and throwing THEIR boomerangs into a boomerang throwing fight between two other players, if only to mess up their concentration. I can imagine it. And it is glorious.

  • fairysun

E3 can not come sooner !! I can’t wait to watch gameplay presentation of this game.

  • lel

New trolling items are always welcome.

  • Items Galore! New Items! My kinda smash ^-^//
