Azure Striker Gunvolt Has Some Kickass Bosses

By Ishaan . June 6, 2014 . 9:33am

In the world of Azure Striker Gunvolt, individuals with special powers are called “psychics”. Normally, psychics possess psychic elements within their bodies that allow them to use their powers. However, the Sumeragi Corporation has taken seven powerful psychics and extracted their psychic elements into sword-shaped devices.

These seven psychics, called “Swordsmen,” serve as Azure Striker Gunvolt’s bosses. Their swords—which can be used remotely to control any unwanted bursts of power—allow them to stay out of trouble and live ordinary lives. However, in cases of emergency, Sumeragi’s monitoring facility gives them access to these swords and they fuse with them, triggering a transformation dubbed “weaponization,” seen below.

Here’s a look at three of these Swordsmen you’ll fight in Azure Striker Gunvolt:

Daytona patrols Sumeragi’s chemical plant complex and possesses the psychic power “Explosion”. Once a notorious gang leader, Daytona fell in love with Lumen’s voice and enlisted as part of Sumeragi’s private army.

He has the ability to compress thermal energy into small spheres called Angry Bombs that explode on impact. He can also enflame his legs and his sword of choice is “Lord of Fire”.

Daytona performs a leg sweep with explosive velocity.

Daytona fires shells in three directions.

Daytona uses wall jumps to climb up a pillar of flames while scattering shells all over the ground to immobilize GV, then performs a drop kick.

Daytona slams GV with an axe kick engulfed in flames.

Daytona performs a sudden direction shift in midair during a Unicorn Drop, then kicks the air to produces a barrage of small energy projectiles.

Daytona’s Special Ability: Daytona fires blazing projectiles across the screen while enjoying a temporary defense boost.

Elise was being held prisoner by Sumeragi. She possesses the ultimate psychic power—“Rebirth,” the ability to manipulate the soul into spinning out life for eternity. Sumeragi were attempting to implant Eise’s brain with a more aggressive persona that ended up taking control of her original, weak-willed persona.

Unfortunately, Sumeragi were unable to contain her power, triggering a rampage that levelled the research facility she was being held at. Elise uses the “Living Blade” has her sword of choice, and controls “vipers” that she can shape into daggers. After being thrown, she can make them come back to life as zombies.

Elise wraps her whip around a pole and travels rapidly around the screen.

Elise throws a dagger. If it hits the ground, it turns into a viper that attacks GV.

Elise emits a petrifying gaze. While petrified, GV is unable to move and suffers much greater damage than usual. The effect can be broken by wiggling around the Circle Pad.

Elise’s two personas attack GV together using both whips and daggers.

Elise’s Special Ability: Destroying one of Elise’s personas will cause the other persona to resurrect her.

Stratos is a swordsman that is held prisoner by Sumeragi. Prior to his capture, he was a handsome, popular man, although no trace of this man remains today. Stratos possesses the “Fly” ability and is capable of turning his flesh into fly-shaped particles of energy that can dismantle any matter and incorporate it into his body.

Repeated experimentation on Stratos has caused his powers to become too powerful for even his Sword, “Lizardslayer,” to control. The only thing that keeps him in check is a special drug called S.E.E.D., extracted from the experimental plant ViVid.

Stratos, in fly form, turns into a ball and charges at GV.

Stratos lays eggs in the ground. Flies hatch from the eggs and attack GV at once.

Stratos transforms into a giant mouth that sprouts from the ground and chases GV, repeatedly trying to swallow him whole.

Stratos’ body splits in two and deploys flies against GV. The fly attacks can be blocked with the Lightning Ring Shield, but the two Stratoses will be charging at GV the whole time.

Stratos’ Special Ability: Stratos gathers flies from devices on the right and left sides of the screen to turn into a giant and deliver a single devastating attack. Either Stratos needs to be defeated or the devices need to be destroyed before the transformation is complete.

Azure Striker Gunvolt is in development for the Nintendo 3DS and will be released in North America and Japan this Summer.

    ROCK ON!

  • Thomaz Barros

    Ah yes the 7 Samurais

  • Hagaren

Must not make Rolling Start joke…

  • samsneeze

Man, Daytona looks like such a beach.

  • raitouniverse

    A pole? I must say, that’s pretty…. different.

    • Rohan Kishibe

Idk if you’ve ever played Mega Man ZX Advent, but there is a boss called Rosepark and he travels up and down it attacking with electrical bullets. It’s fun to see Inticreates reusing ideas in new ways. Here’s and image so you can see what I’m talking about.

      • natchu96

I hate Rospark not for the boss, but for the fact that his form was useless.

That’s really the problem with Advent, tbh. Most of the Pseudoroids were used as map gimmicks. Copied Megamen’s forms were really the only forms in all of Advent that were suitable for any sort of combat whatsoever.

        • Rohan Kishibe

I agree. I would have have preferred more biometals and have a low count of transformations than have a bunch of useless ones. I would have gotten so much mileage out of the game is there was a way to unlock Prometheus or Pandora by collecting something or beating it on a higher difficulty. The first ZX did it right.

    • Rohan Kishibe
  • MrSirFeatherFang

Always gotta be a two person boss battle ^_^

Purple reminds me a bit of Argoyle & Ugoyle

    • ZEROthefirst

I hated them the first time I went through Advent, I was paranoid fighting 2 bosses at the same time and didn’t pay attention to their REALLY simple pattern lol

    • spyro20

      it’s like megaman zero right?

      • MrSirFeatherFang

Would think so, considering it’s the same developer!

    • natchu96

Yeah, it was Argoyle and Ugoyle!

I was immediately thinking from the picture “which was that one boss from ZXA that was two people” . . . they sure have unmemorable names.

  • GOLD

do we take their abilities in traditional megaman fashion

    • J_Joestar

having their powers concentrated within swords is convenient if they want to go that way.

      • natchu96

I wonder if anyone in their organization goes “. . . really? You’ve got all this awesome tech and supernatural esper powers, and the best idea you’ve got for a weapon is an esper-powered sword? A SWORD?!?”

Even without esper equality being stake GV still needs to barge in on these guys for the sake of equal opportunity for firearms in fiction.

  • 하세요

Elise reminds me of Mewtwo, backstory and all. The new Mewtwo in the more recent movie, that is.

  • Kornelious

Man what a cast. As the title says this game is gonna be Kickass! :D

I hope we don’t have to “kill” Elise though….I feel bad for her :(

    • Yagami Mao

      yeah, totally agree.

    • 하세요

I can see it being a “put me out of my misery” kind of kill, as it’s better than eternal suffering.

      • Kornelious

Oh man, Now this game sounds like I’m gonna cry…………..Which makes for an awesome game!….Still I probally will cry :(

    • Gunvolt: *After killing Elise* “…W..What am I fighting for…?”

    • I was just thinking the same thing that I don’t want to kill her either after I read her profile. I want her to join us on the Azure side lol

  • NightzeroAX

Cant get Megaman ZX 3 so I guess this will be it.

  • Vash bane

this game sounds to difficult to me lol i’ll have to pass on

  • Yan Zhao

This game looks amazing. Cant wait.

  • TiamatNM

I don’t want to actually read the article cause I’d rather learn their attacks firsthand. ;)

  • Raoni Marques

    Kickass designs everywhere!

  • stein11

Hope GV have his own weaponization form.

    • natchu96

He should just go sword collecting, it’d be fun.

  • Anime10121

    WOW those designs look awesome!

  • Kroz

i feel this game is going to be very good just from how much effort their putting into the designs and stuff. and i hope it does well so it becomes its own series would love to see more of this world.

  • TheExile285

    I need this.

  • Every new piece of info I hear about this game makes me want it more. But I know it’s gonna make me throw my 3ds against the wall lol

  • spyro20

this is definetlely like megaman zero

  • MaidKillua

Is this an E-shop game or is it going to be physical? Not that I even care since it looks great and i’ll probably be willing to break my rule about digital if I have to, just wondering

    • J_Joestar

iirc it is intended as a digital title.

  • Morningstar

Something tells me Elise is gonna be more important to the story than one would expect of a megamanesque boss

  • XiaomuArisu

3ds…your chances are rising to get bought by me

  • J_Joestar

I can’t help but picture Elise turning around and yelling “BLOOD AND THUNDER!”

  • Göran Isacson

Ah, Elise is incorporating both Argoyle and Ugoyle and Rosespark moves. I see what you do there, Inticreates. I wonder if these people will all be done-in-one encounters, or if Gunvolt might spare them and just beat them up… even if it look like Swordsmen like Stratos might be too far gone to help.

    • natchu96

When they are too far gone mercy killing would be the answer. Sadly.

Though since Daytona is a Lumen fan he might have a chance?

Though maybe he’d just end up volunteering as cannon fodder to stall the other bosses after we beat him up the second time en route to the final boss . . .

      • Göran Isacson

        Possibly so, yes.

Although I am curious how they will solve the “boss rush” problem then. If this game stays as close to the Megaman Zero formula as it looks like it will, then they’ll have to bring all the bosses back later on in the game. But robots can be rebuilt, humans once dead… not so much.

Unless a plot twist will later reveal they’re cloning the Swordsmen, which… is honestly not TOO far-fetched, I guess.

        • natchu96

Well, there was ZX Advent where the bad guy might as well have gone “I guess I could rebuild new ones . . . but fuck it I’ll just bring them back to life directly with resurrection to show off.”

We be dealing with espers here, they can use whatever asspull they need.

  • lel

Megaman zero with new skins……thats not a bad thing of course.

  • lozffvii

    @ Daytona’s final skill:
Did anyone else hear a warning klaxon and ‘Solar Sect of Mystic Wisdom ~ Nuclear Fusion’ playing in the background?

  • BleuVII

    R.O.C.K. ON!

  • Yaggyu

    Megaman ZX/Advent

    • natchu96

Generic Megaman-esque fire-throwing boss that generates pillars of fire and can shower the field in fireballs: check.

The lovechild of Rospark and Argoyle/Ugoyle: check.

Stratos . . . wait, what the hell is he :/

  • Hinataharem

This is so ZX its not even funny

  • This game. I want it.

  • Jadfish
  • Benjamin Tyler

    Her personas?

  • Ric Vazquez

    Can’t wait for this

  • natchu96

Elise giving me the “obligatory boss with two bodies” vibes.

    But hey flies, that’s new.

  • Chrispy

… and will be released in North America and Japan …

So… is EU getting shafted on YET ANOTHER game?
