30 Minutes Of Xenoblade Chronicles X Gameplay With Details

By Ishaan . June 10, 2014 . 9:19pm

Earlier today, Nintendo’s product development team, Treehouse, live-streamed 30 minutes of gameplay footage from Xenoblade Chronicles X. The stream was recorded by Operation Rainfall, and you can watch it in its entirety below.

Here’s a brief rundown of the major information provided during the video:

  • At the start of the game, two warring alien species have a fierce battle close to Earth, and essentially force all of humanity to leave the planet in two arc ships before the planet blows up. The arc ships are extremely large in size and can essentially hold the population of an entire city.

  • One of the arc ships gets knocked out of space and crash-lands on an alien planet. Xenoblade Chronicles X takes place on this planet, and part of the game’s story involves searching for other groups of survivors that were scattered during the crash.

  • Your player character then awakens from their stasis pod, at which point you can customize them. You can choose their gender, hairstyle, skin colour, size and more. The first person you meet is Elma, who is one of the scouts from the city looking for survivors.

  • The first people to come out of stasis after the arc ship crashed were military people. However, the military folks know that they need people with other talents to get civilization back up and running, such as farmers and craftspeople.

  • As you explore the first area in the game, you’ll come across other artefacts that were scattered during the arc ship’s crash-landing.

  • The first city in the game is Neo Los Angeles, guarded by a military installation. This is the city you’ve seen in all the trailers for Xenoblade Chronicles X thus far. You’ll also see your first mechs in Neo Los Angeles.

  • Day-and-night cycles are back, along with changing weather patterns. Enemy patterns will change from day to night and will also change with the weather. For example, predators come out to hunt at night.

  • Like Xenoblade before it, Xenoblade Chronicles X’s battle system is entirely real-time. “Technical Points” are used to power up your Arts. TP can be built up faster by using melee attacks. Ranged attacks are less risky than melee attacks, but build up TP slower.

  • You can give orders to your teammates in battle using the battle menu. One of the options is the ability to have them focus fire on your target.

  • Characters have “Inner Stats” and “Class Stats”. The former are tied to your character and your items. The latter are tied to your character class.

  • Character classes can be changed on-the-fly—even in the midst of battle. Different Arts are tied to different classes. The first class you start out with is Drifter. Once you unlock multiple classes, you can mix and match Arts from different classes for a character setup you like.

Xenoblade Chronicles X is slated for release in 2015 for the Wii U.

Wow, I am so amazed at how much they have developed so far. I was thinking this game wouldn’t come out until 2016-2017. I am going to have to buy a Wii U for this game.

    • Guest

….. of course 2015 like the majority of games thath have been pushed back. this isnt capcom who said sf5 comes out in 2018. -__-

  • Izzeltrioum

2015 too? It’s some kind of a trend lately or what?

Good luck against Zestiria and Persona 5.

    • MrTyrant

Just looking, knowing Xeno and thinking about the mech in the old trailer makes me doubt that the other will impress me that much.

I have Sen no Kiseki 2 this year at least D:

      • Izzeltrioum

The more you mention the Kiseki series, 10 years are added for each title to get localized.

      • Alexander Aubert

it hurts my kokoro when you mention kiseki series

        • MrTyrant

          Just as keikaku

    • Warboss Aohd

considering Xenoblade’s Reception and Sales, it will likely beat Zestiria, at least in the west.

though it will likely have problems going up against Persona (Provided Nintendo is insane enough to try and release it at any time near Persona 5’s release date, though i’d wager Xenoblade will be out a good few months before Persona 5 will.)

      • Tiredman

Not really much competition there honestly. Not on the same consoles more than likely, if Persona does pop up on Wii U I will be shocked, and they are completely different from each other in pretty much every way possible.

        • Warboss Aohd

true, but i was just responding to someone else’s comment.

    • Anon-non

I don’t see myself playing only one of these games and not play the other. I would say a lot of people would play all these of these; hardly any competition.

    • Kaitsu

I wouldn’t worry too much. It’s mostly a problem when it’s for 1 console. I’ll be getting this and P5 though.

    • Guest

ff15 most likely relases next year and comes to tgs. rumored march 2015

    • Kumiko Akimoto

      People can buy all 3

      • Slayven19

My thoughts exactly, why am I denying myself good games if I have the cash to spend?

    • Anime10121

Xenoblade will destroy Zestiria (likely Sales wise as well). Persona 5… depends on how things go, it goes the Persona 4 route, and I’ll say Xenoblade will probably be better than that too, but if it goes the Persona 3/2 route…

      • Alexander Aubert

lets hope persona 5 don’t get to much milking. persona 4 and 3 milking already making me sick

    • Fox

Different platforms, pal, so no need for much luck.

And no way in hell is Persona 5 coming out in 2015.

  • DIfferent classes on the fly? Hellz yes.

  • SetzerGabbiani

That opening scene is like something out of Tomino Gundam crossed with Earth Seeker.

The game needs some optimization, but it looks like it will be incredible with that final polish.

  • neocatzon

Too bad they didn’t show us the mechs gameplay and I want a jrpg version of the recent ‘batmobile moment’.

  • Impressionnant

Excited about the character creation. Not enough non-western-inspired JRPGs with character creation.

    • shuyai

why? character creation is one of the worst thing that can happen in Jrpg. awkward in Cutscene, silent, unresponsive and emotionless expression, weird interaction with other character that kinda like people talking on the phone in a movie/book and talking a way that repeat what is being said on the phone to let the audience know whats being said.

the one work best is Mass effect and even that is weird as hell as Shepard is emotionless during the conversation and sudden get a burst of emotion when you pick a conversation choice.

So i think it is best to create a set character and personality but let us customise it looks and build.

      • Godmars

The “Shepherds” are a fault of lazy development. Not having enough money to do or give fem Shep her own movements which they could and should have done.

    • Symbol de Au

This is Western inspired just not in the way you likely mean. They said before development even began that they wanted to beat the West and something about making it as big as Skyrim or something…though Xenoblade Chronicles was already bigger than Skyrim so they might have been talking about reception.

  • Fox

We now know and have seen much more about X than FFXV, which was announced nearly 10 years ago.

    • Godmars

Its really time to stop beating on 15. If/when it comes out it will come out.

Square just bit off too much announcing three major projects at once when they had no understating about HD production. Letting the artist having too much free rein.

      • Shippoyasha

I think it’s less the artists and more about the big heads calling the shots. The developers are only doing what they’re told. The leadership just hasn’t been very solid in general at Square Enix. If they have too much on the plates, then that’s also a bit of a failure from the leadership as well.

        • Jadfish

And if everything else fails, just blame the western published games for not selling enough to cover the costs of those fuck-ups

    • Slickyslacker

Of course, this comment is obligatory.

and of course, X will almost surely release before…you know.

SE does what they want. Their internal development teams are fastidious and austere, and their history of releasing public information is legendarily lackluster. They’re admittedly not the best at planning ahead or thinking together.

Deride them as much as you’d like, it won’t change their handling style.

Getting past the kneejerk huehue reaction to XV not showing this year, it makes sense. “Please understand” has never been a more appropriate phrase.

    • Daniel Jeanbaptiste

      it called Xenoblade Chronicles X

  • MentalAlliance

My goodness! When I watched this live during the treehouse event I was freaking out! I can not wait for this magnificent splendor of pure beauty!

  • Roger

I love how this starts with an airship crashing on a unknown planet, pretty much like Xenogears.

Hopefully they will achieve something similar or bigger than what they wanted to achieve with Gears.

    • Heropon

” An airship crashing on a unknown planet ” remind me of Star Ocean more than Xenogears

      • Roger

I actually thought about SO too while writting that post :P

      • Guest

        Phantasy Star Nova

    • Anime10121

They also said in the Treehouse stream that it would draw elements from ALL the previous Xeno entries and that fans who’ve stuck around for the entire ride will be surprised at some of the things drawn from them :D

  • TalesOfBS

    This is gonna be big….

  • Warboss Aohd
    • Land of Green Pasture

      I see…

      Nothing in there…

      • Warboss Aohd

i’ve got at least $200 stashed, i can afford it i assure you.

  • Godmars

My main concern aside from the non-immersion of getting your equipment as you level up, is how long will it take to see an English version. 2016?

    • Skye Johnson

I don’t think horribly long. I’d say later 2015, assuming X is released early 2015. From all the advertising Nintendo’s doing, they’re probably already doing a lot of work already localizing it as it’s developed.

If we’re lucky, maybe we’ll almost get a simultaneous release date. But they’re obviously marketing this pretty hard, so I’m not expecting to wait forever for it, like we did the original Xenoblade.

  • I think this literally is the only Wii U game I am interested in

  • Jadfish

Okay now the Wii U just needs Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate and it’ll have 5 games I’ll instantly go buy one for

  • Skye Johnson

I hope we get to see Colony 9 and so on, and see how the world’s changed compared to Xenoblade 1, as it seems to be the same world as before. Pretty sure at the end of the trailer, I saw Neo Fallen Arm. Not to mention the Nopon.

  • Kai2591

This and Zelda are my only reasons to get a Wii U.
    and that’s fine! :)

  • I liked everything I saw. Very hyped for this next year =)

  • GamerLegend

You know what will be awesome, their mechs(Dolls) will also be CUSTOMIZABLE!!!

  • Guest

i hope they make the plot more grey and black and have less ciclhi characters who rise above their standard jrpg tropes

  • goa ahsd

This confuses me because how does the ending of XBC translate into X?… Humans, humanity, earth other planets and technology like this wasn’t even in the game. hell Shulk was surprised at the concept of earth. At the end Shulk and Alvin became “god”. then Shulk said he didnt want to be god, which somehow resulted in just , JUST, the overworld, Shulk’s planet, to RESTART, but somehow at the same time everyone who was previously still alive (protagonist and bystanders) are still alive living happily ever after. The ending left more questions than answers with what was info dumped in the end cutscene. Ambiguous… if X does not touch upon these things then I’m sorry it won’t feel anything like a direct sequel. Might as well call it Xenoultra. Gotta have cause effect for coherent fiction. Don’t be cryptic for the sake of surprise

That was the ending of XBC. And now in XBC X, there is Earth with an America on it (the flag and Neo LA), way more complex, futuristic technology, and modern cars that resemble our own, homs have been replaced with actual humans, there are other planets and aliens and so on. Really X starts out similar to Star Ocean 4 and visually looks like a Star Ocean game minus the robots and some of the polygons

    • PreyMantis

      Great, a spoiler…
Thus can be a prequel/ alternate universe (like Final Fantasy) for all we know.

      • revenent hell

It probably is, a prequel that is. At least I thought as much when the first footage was shown and based on what story tidbits are given in the videos and whatnot it kind of feels like it would lead in to Xenoblade quite easily…Well I think so at any rate.

    • Anime10121

In Nintendo’s Treehouse stream they referred to it as a “spiritual successor”. Nobody ever said it was a direct sequel, thus no 2 has been added to the title.

    • God

The world never restarted or anything of the sort, and if you remember Xenoblade well, that world was created due to some kind of experiment, the two gods in the world of Xenoblade were scientists, and Alvin was a computer, probably with a high level of artificial intelligence, this is probably a Prequel.

  • Kornelious

I’m glad that we can switch classes on the go…I’ve always had trouble decing between classes :P I wonder what type of classes the game will have…..I am interested to know :)

And Elma……Gotta love those brown-skin girls! <3 XD

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

I hope this have character interaction choices or your MC will just be bland and non speaking

  • theoriginaled

Id enjoy it a lot more if those buffoons would shut up for 5 seconds and let the game speak for itself…. I hope the english release goes with british accents again. it really lent a bit of charm to the first.

    • revenent hell

Oy, they should make it mandatory to have “speakers” not speak during gameplay. Its irritating at best and detracts from the game being shown.

Silence is Golden boys and their parents should have taught them that long ago. .

    • Aaron K Stone

But with the people coming from Neo Los Angeles them speaking with Brit accents wouldn’t make much sense.

      • Wolfs_Rain

They established that Neo Los Angeles is isn’t Earth Los Angeles, it’s an offworld colony set up by the humans who fled Earth, so they could have any accent. I think it would make the most sense to have a variety of accents.

      • keithmaxx

Well the one showed just now had supposed Americans speaking perfect Japanese. By that token, the whole thing doesn’t make sense.

  • Guilherme Matheus Silva

OMG! It’s soo beautiful! looks like Bionis’ Leg or Shoulders!!

  • Reminds me of Phantasy Start. Looks quite addictive. I want it @[email protected]

  • Kevin

I hope they really work on those graphics it looks very ps2~y and not very impressive. The gameplay looks great but it’s just not easy on the eye, considering the wii u is capable of better I would expect better.

    • Guest

I think you dont remember what PS2 looks like

Hell PS3 games look worse than this one does

  • Vash bane

this game looks interesting. all this talk about arts is really reminding me of …

  • isotrex

I hope we’ll still get the original Japanese dub/audio. I don’t mind having subtitles. :)

Wii U is gaining momentum based on E3 announcements so far. I hope they will do well on the market. :) Still hoping for the best of Nintendo.
