Pac-Man Joins Super Smash Bros.

By Ishaan . June 10, 2014 . 7:16pm

We all saw it coming. Pac-Man is a playable character in the new Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, director Masahiro Sakurai just revealed at a presentation for the game at E3.

Pac-Man can make a fire hydrant (Down A) that shoots water from it. He can also turn into his arcade self as his side attack, as well as grow huge and eat things. His Up B move is a trampoline that he can bounce off thrice.

Director Masahiro Sakurai emphasized Pac Man’s older design rather than the new one, he says, citing him as one of the oldest characters in games.

Following the character’s reveal, Sakurai demonstrated a battle between Sonic, Mario, Mega Man and Pac-Man. Pac-Man entered as his classic form, and then popped out of it as Pac-World Pac-Man.

  • Jonah Paley

    Gematsu was right after all…

    • doubleO7

Well, along with half the internet. I saw many, many youtube prediction videos including him.

  • KingGunblader

Wow, for every Villager/Wii Fit Trainer/Mii, there is a Mega Man/Rosalina/Pac-Man. Love it. Hope we can see him soon.

    • Tails the Foxhound

Yeah, so far they keep announcing “bad” characters and countering them with “good” characters just a few minutes/hours later. I don’t like it…but I guess I can live with it.

  • TheGioG

Battle of the goddamn century ensues. Here’s the official reveal trailer for proof (c’mon fellas, bring on that Konami representative…).

    • ShawnOtakuSomething

Konami: simon belmont for smash bros. WHIPPING DUDS

      • ZEROthefirst

No we need Django, he has so much more variety going for him and he would actually fit in with the cast.

        • British_Otaku

They pick classics over everything when it comes to third parties so far. Megaman.EXE got in through a final smash. Django doesn’t really stand a chance against Snake or Simon, even if I would want him more.

          • ZEROthefirst

I’m well aware of that, I was merely voicing my opinion, not saying if they gave Konami a character that it would be him. I know they’re not giving Konami a character slot at this point anyways since Snake more than likely isn’t coming back.

        • Daniel

Thought you were joking about django (thought you were talking about the movie character) turns out its just someone im not familiar with

          • ZEROthefirst

lol I thought about editing it later to specify, but I figured most people would look it up if anything like you did.

      • Definitely Simon Belmont for me. It’ll be Captain N all over again. Plus, Simon had a Smash-esque debut in Dream TV Fighters game.

      • yomachaser

Simon doesn’t have a deep known moveset though. What if they tapped into Richter’s insane movelist since it already has obvious vertical and horizontal flashy moves?

        • Jecht

I really don’t think a pre-existing moveset is necessary considering there are characters like Pacman or R.O.B….

          • British_Otaku

I would have said “Captain Falcon” or “Fox” who exclusively stuck to physicals before being given fire abilities and insane mobility but yeah, having a deep known moveset isn’t a requirement.

    • AuraGuyChris

Obviously, Mario wins. The other three have had…

Let’s just say they have had rough times.

    • kylehyde

Nintendo, Capcom, Sega and now Namco Bandai, the project x zone is complete

  • I seriously don’t think Pac-Man deserves to be in SSB. He’s not Mega Man, he did not make the NES, nor any other Nintendo consoles awesome.

    • Craig

Namco worked very hard on Smash Brothers and deserves to add a character. While he may not be prefered, he is deserving.

    • DaiRaiOh

Yeah. Not like he’s one of the most iconic and important characters in gaming or anything

      • In gaming, but not Nintendo gaming. Mega Man obviously got in because of fan request AND for what how much he represented Nintendo. Solid Snake was a request AFAIK and Sonic had entirely different reasons to be in. Pac-Man? He’s just a popular character from a really successful arcade game. I’m not seeing why he would be important for SSB besides the obvious Namco involvement.

        • idrawrobots

Pac-Man has been on almost every Nintendo System. Not many can say that. and let’s not forget, Pac Man Vs. designed by Miyamoto.

        • Pedro Rosas

Well there is your answer, Namco probably made a deal with Sakurai before development. If I’m gonna work in the next Smash I would love to see my character in there wouldn’t you?

and the reason Snake was in is because Kojima and Sakurai are actually friends

        • DaiRaiOh

He’s important to ALL gaming. Everyone and their mother owes him when he comes to gaming, so he’s a perfect fit here. He’s a perfect fit in any game that celebrates any sort of gaming really. That’s just how important he is. Not to mention this isn’t the first Nintendo game he’s been in

          • chroma816

Then why don’t we just put in a Tetris block? It’s super important to gaming. It’s 30 years old now. It’s been on a ton of systems. Guess a Tetris block deserves it too.

          • DaiRaiOh

The sheer stupidity in that comment. Just wow…

          • chroma816

Why’s it stupid? That Pacman is part of video gaming history seems to be the only reason people are saying it’s okay that he’s included. The same rules apply to Tetris blocks.

          • Aisha Lee

Pong is a assist trophy so who knows

          • DaiRaiOh

Except there’s plenty of other reasons. He’s interesting from a play perspective, namco is involved with development, and he’s the definition of iconic. He’s honestly done more to earn his spot then most of the cast

          • yomachaser

I…would love to play a tetramino (sp?), He keeps getting bigger with each mino that drops but he has to make proper four line tetris to shrink down to a smaller target!

      • M’iau M’iaut

That’s the best way to understand the choice. Pac is the one with the Top 40 hit, not Mr. Driller.

        • Not saying I don’t understand the choice. I just disagree with it. Very strongly, I guess. :D

          • M’iau M’iaut

And that’s fine. Post your disagreement — that’s not being stopped. But, the matter has been brought up before. All I am saying in the above post.

      • NTaiyokun

Well I get where you’re coming from. This is Smash Bros. and that’s how it’s going to roll. For some reason though, I’m not very excited, which isn’t popular opinion I know.

    • nmlss

No, he’s just one of the biggest gaming icons of all times. That’s all.

      • Notice how Super Smash Bros. is a game full of characters important to the history of Nintendo. Now please start counting the Pac-Man games that made Nintendo popular and are not reskins of the original (like Ms. Pac-Man).

I fully understand how much of a gaming icon Pac-Man is. Hell, even I love some of the games he’s in. But he’s not a character I can associate with Nintendo.

That said, I cannot think up any other Namco characters worthy enough for the inclusion. I mean, Klonoa would be nice, but lol who am I kidding. (:

        • yomachaser

How about Naruto? He had quite a few great games on Nintendo hardware, is a big current Namdai rep and is still uber popular.

          • Showmeyomoves

            He’s not a Namco Bandai character, though… He’s a Shounen Jump character.

If he or Goku is added, you might as well start throwing Batman and Superman in there.

          • Exactly, anything manga-anime inspired would be a terrible choice (as much as I love said media). Namco truly doesn’t have anything other to include. Klonoa would fit in more with the rest of the characters, but Klonoa is simply dead.

At the very least, I’m happy they went for the classic design, though I would’ve liked a flatter look more. Not Game & Watch flat, just… something else. Plus that final smash does bring a smile to my face.

    • Deletable Man

He made my NES a little more awesome. :<

      • Well, Pac-Man IS an awesome game after all! :D

Just, you know. What else can you think about when it comes to Pac-Man and NES? Pac-Land?

  • FlobotingIt

An article on IGN says there are roughly 33 characters… I just counted, and including Pac Man, that makes 33… I know there will be unlockables, but… Eh.

    • idrawrobots

We are missing so many, I don’t see how that could be true.

    • im with @idrawrobots:disqus. i honestly dont think that so many characters WONT be returning. especially considering we dont have ganondorf, cap falcon, falco, jigglypuff, ice climbers, game-and-watch or ness yet.

      • FlobotingIt

Yeah! A lot of the really, really popular fan favorites aren’t showing up. And it’s upsetting. I mean, yeah, there are still MONTHS between the release and this. I’m expecting an appearance from Bayonetta, but… Really. I was thinking that there would be a classic character announced at E3. Or especially Mewtwo…

        • indeed! i wouldnt be surprised if one isnt magically revealed tomorrow. i think we got at least one character every e3 day last year.

    • AuraGuyChris

      Mr. G&W makes 34… They’re not a reliable source.

      • ronin4life

I’m thinking Sakurai Lied when he said how many characters there would be.

        Bet there are a lot…
        ^ ,^

  • idrawrobots

My hope for Klonoa is destroyed.

    • Tails the Foxhound

I know that feel, where’s my Lloyd Irving man? I don’t hate the idea of playable Pac-Man, but man am I so not hyped about it. Least we got Palutena today.

    • doubleO7

I was hoping for Klonoa too. We can wallow in our tears together.

    • Guest

Nobody tells Spirit Macardi about this.

    • AuraGuyChris

Klonoa is basically a character that looks like it fits right in with the Sonic universe. But yes, I agree.

    • Social justice Wario

this is more heart breaking than the ending to Phantomile

    • JustJam

Bayonetta and Bomberman still deserve a spot

      • idrawrobots

Bomberman defiantly deserves a spot, but Konami seems to hate all the Hudson the bought.

      • yomachaser

I still think Bayo has a very good shot ,but Bomberman?

He needs a hype modern game but why put him in a fighter?

  • Fidelis

Eh. Really not feeling the newcomers this time around besides little mac

  • M’iau M’iaut

Yes Namco went chalk with this choice. Yes, Klonoa has been wished for since the Wii.

Let’s not ride the horse too much longer folks. He’s damn near dead.

    • idrawrobots

      And the GBA games!

    • ReidHershel

I feel bad that you have to make these comments on most hype articles.

    • Social justice Wario

      this feels unreal

smash bros was the only chance for klonoa

holy shit, this is a terrible feeling

    • Social justice Wario

Pac-Man got confirmed for smash bros

theres no reasons for another namco rep now and for klonoa, that means he’ll never have another shot of relevancy again. Oh man why namco, why sakurai?

      • yomachaser

I love Klonoa games but isn’t that too obscure a pull for them to use?

        • Social justice Wario

that was the whole point tho, thats what happened to Marth and Roy in melee for the US, no one knew about them back then. Now they’re pratically stars

    • Cephrien

You just ruined my day with that comment. :c

  • MrJechgo

Ah, the sweet irony of seeing the 2nd guest character from SFxT in a game that people will actually care about XD

  • Kroz

am i the only one who didn’t want pac-man….i mean the more the merrier in terms of characters but pac-man never caught my eye

    • doubleO7

Definitely not the only one. If we had to have a Namco guest, I really wanted Klonoa. Having said that, its not hard to see why they went with Pac-Man.

  • Izzeltrioum

Say all what you want about Pac-Man, but the fact that no SE characters got near Smash pleases me.

    • Guest

      SE? SiliconEra?

      • Aisha Lee

        I think he’s talking about Square-Enix.

      • Zero_Destiny

        Spencer vs Miau

        Sato vs Ishaan

        Robert vs Kano

    • Aisha Lee

I wouldn’t count them out to soon. Plus Cloud Stife would be also for this.

    • Herok♞

Nintendo doesn’t really have any stand out Square characters on their systems so its not surprising.

      • Solomon_Kano

It’s not something I’d ever want to see one way or the other, but I’ll play devil’s advocate for a second:

        – pre-FF7 characters

        – Chrono Trigger characters

        – TWEWY characters

        – Dragon Quest characters

        – Mana characters

There are certainly significant Squenix IPs born on Nintendo hardware, should they ever choose to go there. Based on the other 3rd-party series represented, they’d go for FF (as SE’s most popular IP), and from there we have whole FF subseries exclusive to Nintendo hardware that they could pick from like Crystal Chronicles.

tl;dr — It doesn’t surprise me that there aren’t any Squenix characters either, but it also wouldn’t be a surprise to me if we saw one in the future given their history together.

        • Izzeltrioum

Yeah, I remember how they ditched the N64

          • Solomon_Kano

            They and so many others.

meh, never cared for Pac-Man, he never had that much history with Nintendo in the first place and his games were never really that good outside of the arcade original (and yeah I know the likes of Champion DX exist, but they feel just like an upgrade you’d see from SF2 to the new warriors)

  • SirRichard

Should’ve been a Tekken rep, but at least it’s not the horrific reboot design by the sound of things.

  • Nathaniel Towns

When is Bass going to be announced?!

  • Jettythesunfish

I’ll be honest, I’m kinda disappointed about this, It might just be my bias (since I don’t really like Pacman; though I don’t outright hate him) but i was moreso hoping Klonoa would get in. Sigh. Oh well, at least Palutena’s playable, so I’m not that upset about this turn of events.

  • jugss

They confirmed Game and Watch right? Or was it just Pacman?

    • Arcana Drill

    • zferolie

where did they say game and watch?

    • idrawrobots

WHAT! Game & Watch is my boy. He use him so much!

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

Better then nothing I guess *wanted Lloyd or Klonoa* but this is kool too. Him and Kirby is going to be chilling eating everything and everyone

  • ronin4life

…Am I the only one saying “Ew”?

    • notentirelythere

Nope, a buncha people are in the comments, aha.
It’s bad especially with it being his design from the recent, dreadful cartoon series. Ouch.

      • ronin4life

I think that is a large part of why I don’t feel good about this.

He just doesn’t look like he would mesh well with the other characters at all, gameplay wise or design wise. And the fact this is a Namdai character in a Namdai developed game makes it all feel shoe-horned because of that.

        • M’iau M’iaut

Classic Pac would belong, and that appears to be the choice being made.

I mean this very seriously, Mario and Sonic are not who they are without Pac-Man. I think you can even see elements of Pac in both of them.

          • ronin4life

I can understand that, but I don’t feel being historically important should have but so much impact in regards to getting a smash roster spot. Otherwise we would have a lot of… weird characters and a very messed up roster.

And I just am not seeing this being anything more than a Homage to a legend and a Namdai nod. Feels kind of pointless Gameplay wise to me at the moment, and I am having trouble seeing him work well in Smash.

Not that my opinion can’t change, of course.

          • M’iau M’iaut

Lloyd Irving wouldn’t be the best choice because the game already has 3 sword fighters. I am agreeing with Klonoa as an awesome potential Mario/Fox hybrid, but that is not the choice made by folks far higher up than myself. My concern atm is for the community.

          • ronin4life

I think more sword fighter are more than welcome, since everyone else fights with their fists and that isn’t seen as “Overdone”.
            ^ ,^

But I never thought Lloyd would fit either, and don’t think I ever said I thought he would. Though I guess it would be a kind of cool nod at GC Symphonia…

            …naw, that would still be too weird for some reason… Maybe because of that Wii Exclusive Soul Calibur…@[email protected];;;;

          • God

I’m pretty sure they where 6… Pit, Meta Knight, Marth, Ike, Link and Toon Link.

          • SetzerGabbiani

The eyes on the original Mario and Luigi design and the original Mario Bros. itself as well as Donkey Kong would agree with this. Not upset with the choice made at all; Klonoa would seem to “fit” more, but you’re right in saying he’s not the icon Pac Man is.

        • ShawnOtakuSomething

I think they are going to use his new design from the TV show….I’m not liking him ether but we can take it or leave it

          • Capricciola

Nah. The trailer came out and Pacman has more of a retro disney cartoon look. Check him out:

They’re very obviously going for a video game history theme here with all the references to other games in his attacks, and the gag with game and watch at the end.

Which now that I think about it they’ve had game and watch for so long too. So nobody should be surprised that they’d go for a character like Pacman with a huge history that everyone knows instead of something obscure.

He also kind of reminds of the pacman in “Pacman 2 the new adventures” a little bit.

          • idrawrobots

            That was a fun game.

          • notentirelythere

I’m much more down with this. Pac Man acting like a Namco representative works so much better.

  • Ugh… thanks for ruining my day :/ I was so happy with this announcements until I read this T_T

  • SomeLivingMusician

I figured they would get a namco character in here, and i’m sure some people are excited for pacman but even so, I would much rather play as a tales of character , specifically Lloyd because then we could get our first duel weapon character. I really don’t like this decision but others do so I won’t complain to much, and if Ephraim, Chrom or Isaac is confirmed, then I can let this slide…

    • ronin4life

      I need Isaac…
      We aren’t getting Isaac…

      • SomeLivingMusician

        We all need Isaac TT^TT

  • AuraGuyChris

…Uh, why am I not happy but indifferent?

  • Spirit Macardi

    And just like that, the game went from “day-one purchase” to “skipping entirely” -_-;

This was a chance to do some good. To use Smash’s popularity-boosting power to raise up one of Namco’s smaller game series, but it’s just been squandered. Hell, having a Tekken character would make sense, since at least those games are popular.

But nope, yet again potential is wasted in favor of pretending that Namco’s mascot is still relevant, despite game sales and TV ratings proving otherwise.

    • Boycotting because of pacman…o———k.

      • Spirit Macardi

A boycot is a group effort. This is my decision alone.

        • but seriously because some developer add ONE character makes you go all rage? man you must be one SPOILED child

          [edit: capped the wrong word]

          • Spirit Macardi

            Am I raging?

I’m not trying to force my opinion on anyone else; it’s one that I have and one that a lot of people I know do as well. If you don’t share that opinion, then whatever, that’s your decision just as this is mine.

Does that sound spoiled? Because I think I just gave a pretty mature and reasonable answer.

          • Your opinion is your opinion but the fact that you decide not to buy the game at day one because of one measly character is just really hilarious. If it were me, I would just ignore and move on but just to let you know, I love Pacman as it was one of my entry to gaming.

[edit: in short, I’m not disapproving your decision but it’s just really funny]

          • Spirit Macardi

Honestly it’s sounding like you’re the spoiled one, since you’re the one concerned with what some random person on the internet does or doesn’t buy and for what reason.

          • Wait—wait do you even know the definition of spoiled? Shit…you really need to do better than that.

          • Spirit Macardi

I’m pretty sure raging at someone because their decision doesn’t match with your own fits the definition.

          • Laughing =/= rage

          • M’iau M’iaut

            End it now guys.

          • Fine fine :(

          • Social justice Wario

            thank goodness for non-polygon moderation

          • No. No matter how much mature discussion you are doing over this, the fact that you’d completely skip this game over ONE SINGLE CHARACTER makes you anything but mature.

          • Spirit Macardi

Says the person raging at the guy who merely made a decision not to buy something :B

          • Do you even know what the word raging means?

My face is completely flat and expressionless as I’m talking to you.

I’m actually pretty amused by all this actually.

          • Social justice Wario

            whats amusing about this?

          • Thank you! well lets end this or we’ll get the hammer.

          • TempestTwin

Why does it matter? If he doesn’t want to buy the game because of one character then he is welcome to do so. He is the one making the purchase. He can do whatever he wants. Doesn’t make him immature just because he doesn’t want to buy the game because of reason X.

          • Social justice Wario

the person acknowledge she/he is doing it alone.

            why are you judging?

    • M’iau M’iaut

Please note the post at the top of the thread. We know your thoughts on the matter.

    • AuraGuyChris

I…think you’re taking this a little out of proportions.

Just say Pac-Man becomes your main punching bag and that’ll sound more acceptable.

      • Social justice Wario

as long as klonoa costume for mii’s happen

    • ★Star™Lee★

The game will still be awesome! Your pretty stupid if your skipping the game for one character. Just make him your punching bag, then you’ll feel better! ^^

      • ★Star™Lee★

        EDIT: Because of one character

      • Spirit Macardi

Frankly the game was already seeming rather meh to me. No story mode, Captain Falcon and Ness are nowhere to be seen, and they seem far more focused on making it an actual fighting game as opposed to a fun platforming/battling hybrid.

This was just the kicker… Though a pretty big one.

        • nmlss

If you seriously think Falcon and Ness aren’t going to be in the game, you may be a bit retarded. No offense.

          • Solomon_Kano

This is the second time in as many minutes that I’m having to say something to you about name calling. I’m certain that you understand, but if you don’t, I’m going to have to ask that you take it elsewhere. You can disagree with something someone says without insulting them.

          • Jettythesunfish

Well that was nice of you to say, wasn’t it?

        • ★Star™Lee★

Don’t worry Spirit, there will be some big and possibly better mode for the versions (or maybe just the Wii U one). Captain Falcon and Ness were never revealed b4 the games release. They were secret characters, so we’ll get them.

        • Jettythesunfish

I don’t think Falcon and Ness are out. The hints lie with the items and Assist Trophies. Besides, Falcon got in because Sakurai liked him.

    • Jettythesunfish

Woah, woah. Cool down man. I’m not very psyched about Pac-Man getting in, either. I was hoping Klonoa would have some sort of fighting chance just so he can leap from the bounds of obscurity. But we can’t all be happy it seems.

I’m still glad that Palutena is a newcomer, and that Game & Watch is back. I’m still going to enjoy the game with the other new characters revealed. So don’t let this one disappointment get you down. I was just in a chat with some friends about it and they told me to keep my head up. So allow me to tell you the same. Keep your head up, man.

If we’re lucky, maybe Klonoa will be an Assist Trophy? Sakurai tends to make some obscure characters ATs instead, right?

      • Social justice Wario

hopefully the model will be good

I’m not psyched about Pac-Man either. I didn’t want the Mii’s btw, but now i LOVE them in Smash! And Palutena’s Confirmed and….Mr. Game and Watch?i i’m sooo hyped that i don’t care who gets in anymore, just let he/she/it be unique.

      • Spirit Macardi

I am cooled down. I was never angry; more massively disappointed than anything. This news is just so… Depressing. I honestly thought that they could do some good and toss in someone unexpected who could use the Smash Bros. popularity boost. But instead… This.

        • Jettythesunfish

Yeah, I get you. I’m pretty bummed about this, but we have a bunch of other newcomers to enjoy. And again, maybe Klonoa will still get in.

          • Spirit Macardi

Not even just Klonoa. Do you have any idea how many Namco franchises could use the popularity and would be great in Smash?

            Tower of Druaga

            Heck, Katamari would be hilarious.

In fact, that trampoline move it mentions for Pac-Man, I have a feeling it was ripped from a different Namco character: Mappy.

          • Jettythesunfish

            You have a point, yes.

        • Social justice Wario

I just hope at least a reference in the form of an assist Trophy, or hell even a miiverse stamp will happen

just damn, this is depressing stuff

        • Solomon_Kano

I’m not sure I understand. The Sega character that was picked (for the second time now) is none but their most iconic. The Capcom character that was picked is arguably their most iconic, next to Ryu. Why WOULDN’T Namco’s representative be their most popular character?

The choices in 3rd-party representatives have had nothing to do with promoting characters and increasing their popularity, especially not ones who have lain dormant for quite some time, so why would Klonoa suddenly be the exception?

I can understand your want for Klonoa, and I’m sure everyone knows by now, but I don’t see the purpose in being disappointed in something that was more or less a guarantee from the start when you think about where Klonoa stands at Namco and where Pac-Man stands and what the Smash series does.

          • Spirit Macardi

Where am I mentionng Klonoa here? Yeah, he’d be my number one choice, but he’s not the ONLY choice. Namco has so many franchises that they’ve left to rot over the years that could be brought back to life from appearing in a game like this.

I mean, after they screwed over ShiftyLook there’s basically nowhere left for any of these great old series to gain recognition. Smash was it, and they spent it on a character who has an official toy modeled after him that barfs.

          • Solomon_Kano

You didn’t name Klonoa specifically, fair enough. Klonoa or any other character with his level of relevance, then. What should make them the exception to the pattern in Sakurai’s choice of 3rd-party characters?

If Namco wanted to get these dormant series some recognition Smash and ShiftyLook certainly weren’t their only options, so they probably intend to keep them dormant. They have that choice.

          • Spirit Macardi

It just seems odd for Sakurai.

Sonic’s one case of getting in due to popularity, but there’s also the novelty of relifing the 16 bit console wars by having him fight Mario. So there’s a history at play there. Plus there was real hesitancy to put him in Brawl, and in the end it was fan outcry that pushed him in.

I also have a feeling that if Capcom had their say, we’d be getting a Street Fighter character instead of the blue bomber. So there’s that whole aspect of “Surprise! We brought him back to the forefront!”

Then there’s Wii Fit Trainer, who Sakurai outright stated was put in because it was the last thing anyone expected.

It just seems weird to go with a choice this obvious, especially when Pac-Man is already so similar to Sakurai’s own Kirby. And again, if they were just going for popularity, Tekken, Soul Calibur, and even Tales are far better selling series.

And while it is certainly their choice to keep the series dormant, it’s also one that I feel is incredibly misguided. And if they don’t want to do anything with them, then why even keep the rights when they could sell them to another company and at least get some cash?

          • Solomon_Kano

With the trailer, it’s very clear that Sakurai wanted to play on Pac-Man’s history in gaming as well, pairing him up with Mr. Game & Watch and having Mario and DK pop up next to them. This is also indicated by their use of Pac-Man’s earlier design versus his current design and his moveset.

Regardless of present-day sales, there’s no denying that Pac-Man is Namco’s most iconic character. That’s just not debatable. Where Capcom today may not care about Mega Man, he’s also their most iconic character (again, perhaps rivaled by Ryu). Sonic is Sega’s most iconic character, hands down. Irrespective of fan outcry or sales, there’s a very clear trend in what 3rd-party characters we have here.

          • Spirit Macardi

If iconography is all that matters though, then why are most of his moves things that have nothing to do with the very game that people recognize him from? I mean, when in the arcade games could he summon a fire hydrant? His Final Smash and side attack are the only things that really feel Pac-Man-esque. And if you aren’t going to have a character primarily do what people know him for, then what’s the point?

          • Solomon_Kano

I don’t see how his moveset incorporating things outside of his games impacts his status as an icon. Why does his moveset not incorporate more things from his own games? That’s a question for Sakurai, but does that invalidate his status as an icon next to Sonic and Mega Man?

R.O.B. has moves that don’t come from games, Fox has moves that aren’t from his games, Captain Falcon’s whole moveset isn’t from his games — so up until Brawl, he was entirely original in his fighting. To date, characters movesets haven’t been entirely bound by what’s pulled from their games, so I’m not sure why it should be an issue for Pac-Man.

          • Ya know. I think they’ll make Pac-Man work wonderfully. He’ll probably play really cool and creatively.

But it doesn’t make this any less frustrating. Honestly, I think they only added him for the “oldness” value; which is to say, not just the nostalgia or novelty, but so it kind of looks like, “look at the history of gaming.” All lined up (esp. when you include Mario).

I think Klonoa would have made more sense, but sense doesn’t entirely seem to matter. frankly, I’m desperate for more female fighters and think they should have added Meredy (wQuicky). They should add Jill! Or just anyone that needs a shot, really.

But as things continue on, I’m really excited for the game! Except for the roster. More and more, I start to side-eye and the roster and character treatment/handling.

          • TempestTwin

Not saying I don’t disagree with you, but it could be argued that capcom has left megaman to rot over the last few years seeing as they canceled about 4 of his games ever since Keiji Inafune left.

    • Colonel Custard

you do realize you start a statement with asking to raise awareness for lesser known characters then ending with proving pacman is lesser known yet in a statement just above saying to use a popular character. Son make up your mind.

      • Spirit Macardi

Because there’s a difference between a series that doesn’t sell despite having tons of commercialization, and one that doesn’t sell because it’s never used or was marketed poorly.

        • Colonel Custard

idk what you mean doesn’t sell, pacman has been profitable without tons of commercialization. And of course one can’t sell if it was never used. As for marketed poorly well namco doesn’t really market it games poorly they have their new games and the older games gain notoriety from their anniversary meetings or announcements.

          • Spirit Macardi

If you’re just talking about those arcade throwback games, then yeah those do well. I’ll even admit they have a certain charm to them. The recent 3D games though have all bombed, and they cost more to produce and had the TV show to advertise them.

And I’d definitely consider not running any commercials for their games and just tossing them onto shelves to be poor marketing. What’s worse though is when they make horrible advertisements, like comparing the name of a game to an STD.

          • Colonel Custard

I highly doubt the 3d pacman where costly for one they were on the Wii and ds, two the Wii one was just monopoly. Yes it was a loss and the TV show is doing good apparently. And they have commercials for it though I didn’t see any of the TV ones I remember there were a few on ign and I think gamefaqs. Regardless it was commercialized around the success of the TV show unfortunately the game was piss. But go beyond that there hasn’t been a 3d pac man game in many many years.

So ya know is a good as any time to bring Pacman to the forefront. The mascot character in a game that has other mascot characters or do you think Mario, Sonic, Megaman should be removed to provide room for less known characters.

          • Solomon_Kano

Actually, there was a new 3D Pac last year. It apparently did well enough for them to do a sequel, at that.

          • Colonel Custard

I was talking bout review should have clarified.

          • Solomon_Kano

  • 하세요

That’s cool. Got my four characters – Peach, Rosalina, Greninja, and Samus. Go nuts with the rest Nintendo~

  • Kornelious

huh, well I guess EVERYONE saw this coming :P

Was kinda hoping for Lloyd or some other Tales character, but i guess that kind of a far fetch…..Though you never know, Nintendo has been full of surpises lately!

E3 isn’t over yet! I have high hopes for the coming announcements :D

  • CozyAndWarm

Didn’t Namco just cancel a Pac-Man game for Wii U and 3DS even though it’s coming out on other systems?

Why is this being encouraged? It’s bad enough that Nintendo let Snake into Brawl even though Kojima snubs their systems at every opportunity.

  • Izzeltrioum

    Holy corns!

Are the Four Horsemen of Apocalypse the real thing now? Is it, maybe, full moon right now? It is known that such lunar event leads to murders and whatnot.

  • ★Star™Lee★

    So HYPED.

  • Bio_liquid

Everyone keeps saying Lloyd or Klonoa would’ve been a better pick. Honestly I didn’t even know who Klonoa is and had to look him/her up and Lloyd isn’t as well known as Pac-man. Honestly I was expecting a Soul Cal or a Tekken Character but we all got Pac-man.

    I ain’t even mad.

    • Social justice Wario

that was sadly the point for klonoa in smash bros

to get him back into relevancy and get him new fans.

most of us who remember klonona are pretty sour for Namco’s abandonment of the series

      • Spirit Macardi

Abandonment is putting it lightly; they outright screwed the series from day 1.

Yet funnily enough Klonoa: Empire of Dreams is doing better on Wii U than Pac-Man’s last outing did.

        • Colonel Custard

Alright look now since no one is gonna say Klonoa just wasn’t a good game it bland and repetitive and carbon copied many elements from other iconic games. Pacman didn’t start off as a copy of something it was a highly addictive arcade game which is still fun to play unlike Klonoa. Sure the later iterations haven’t been end all be all its evolving and trying stuff in different ways.

    • 하세요

I’m really surprised people thought a Tales character would make it. Like, I’d believe Ridley before that.

  • doubleO7

As someone who really wanted to see Klonoa included instead of Pac-Man, you could say my hopes have been… Smashed

  • chroma816

…This is kinda disappointing. Feels like a waste of a character slot on what (in my opinion, anyway) is basically a joke character.

With so many characters from so many different Nintendo series, our limited character slots are getting taken by things like Pacman. Even worse, characters who’d been in past games (Ness/Lucas, the Ice Climbers, etc) and are well loved haven’t been announced, and characters from first party series that could totally be included haven’t been announced either.

But we get Pacman. Whoopee. So exciting.

    • Colonel Custard

and what is wrong with a joke character, snake was a joke, game and watch was joke.

And So the other characters that haven’t been announced what you want them to announce all the characters at once and not build any hype?

      • chroma816

What made Snake a joke character? He wasn’t a joke character at all. Simply not being native from a Nintendo system doesn’t make one a joke character. Same for Game and Watch – his series was one of Nintendo’s first handhelds, iirc.

We have a limited character roster, and this feels like a disappointing waste.

        • Colonel Custard

and how does pacman equate to being a joke character since he has the same standings as a snake. Game and Watch clearly is a joke character yes its a nod to their early games but, it was a nobody character it didn’t really have and identity and yet they placed in the game a nobody no background just a sprite. And yet you still think that not a joke character among a cast of characters with a story, an arc, and even new game for the most part. (since pokemon are debatable on story and arc)

  • vileBrenman

I’m hoping he has a costume that makes him mrs.pacman lol.

  • AuraGuyChris
    • idrawrobots

I’m sorry everyone that is sad about this but THAT is awesome!
Someone put this video in the article!

    • Aisha Lee

All I have to say about this is. That doesn’t look like Modern Pac-Man to me and those Namco references!

  • First ya kick my nut with no SMT X FE! Then you massage my back with pac-man. THEN YA SHOW ME A TEASER FOR ZELDA WITH GLIMPSES OF IT CAN DO! Again you kick my nuts with more teasing. Nintendo ya naughty dog you. Sadistic yet keep me wanting for more!!

  • DivinePhoenix69

I’m honestly suprised at all the rage over Pac-Man’s inclusion in this game. Yea another Namco character would have been great and all, but Pac-Man clearly is not only Namco’s most iconic character, but one of the most iconic in all of gaming. Quite frankly it wouldn’t have made much sense if Namco went with a more obscure character while Capcom and Sega lent their icons to Smash Bros. He very much deserves his spot on the roster imo.

With that said, i can’t wait to see him in action!

  • NintendoPSXTheSecond

At first I was sad, then I watched the trailer and had a smile on my face. I can’t lie, Sakurai knows how to bring out the best in even the most obscure characters.

    • 하세요

I agree. Like, I didn’t care if he did or didn’t make it, but this moveset definitely interests me. Lots of retro references. People don’t have to like it, but they should respect it instead of these obscure characters knowing that Namco had basically 1 slot to make it count.

It’s not like with G&W and IC when people didn’t really remember them because they have the entire rest of the roster to show popular / recent Nintendo characters.

  • leingod

Nah, really, this one was pretty obvious with Namco helping with development and all.

  • Seth Rich

Well, Pacman does look like he represents all of Namco in that trailer I just saw, so maybe we’ll at least get Klonoa in trophy form or assist trophy form. Which will probably only anger people more, but uhhh……Hey! Recognition.

Somewhere in my dreams Klonoa is jumping up and down on his hat.

  • JustJam

    What about Bomberman & Bayonetta?

  • Zero_Destiny

I hope we can see an alt costume/color pallet of Pac-Man with a little bow on him so we can have Mrs. Pac-Man too. :)

    • Solomon_Kano

      Jr. Pac-Man or bust.

  • Talk about triple reunion for Megaman. I mean look at who is with him in this game:

Pit = Fellow co-star in that old Captain N The Game Master cartoon.
Sonic = Clashed and teamed up with SEGA’s icon in the Megaman – Sonic crossover special issue in the comics.
Pac-Man = Both were in SF x Tekken

  • Aisha Lee

For all the Pac-Man hate. I can see how you you could really want a character and they don’t show up and I know that feeling (really want Krystal to be playable but is also really for the letdown) The thing with this is there will all was be that one little thing that throws something off course (even if it is a personal perfence) but I wouldn’t let one little thing ruin everything esle that is awesome. There is just too much stuff to look forward to.

  • Brandonmkii

Aww yeah, love me some classic Namco nostalgia.
