Star Fox Is Coming To Wii U

By Ishaan . June 10, 2014 . 7:34am

TIME report that Nintendo are developing a new Star Fox game for the Wii U. Speaking with Nintendo’s managing director, TIME discussed a number of upcoming Wii U games that he is involved with. Here’s what they had to say about Star Fox:

In his new version of Star Fox — still fundamentally a spaceship-based shooter — players now use the GamePad’s motion controls to aim and fire the Arwing’s weapons, simultaneously controlling the nimble craft itself by thumbing the joysticks to accelerate or turn and pull off signature moves like barrel rolls, loops and the tactically essential Immelman turn. And you can still morph your Arwing into a land tank, rocketing down to the surface of a planet, then rattling around the battlefield and laying waste to the landscape.

TIME says that the new Star Fox game has a new vehicle mode as well, that is designed to “exemplify the new motion-control scheme”. The mode lets up to two players pilot a helicopter-like craft, with one player controller the craft itself and the other controlling a robot that can be used for damaging enemies and picking up loot.

Miyamoto’s other two titles are called “Project Giant Robot” and “Project Guard”. Both are in experimental stages, and TIME says that Star Fox is “at least” a year away. The designer said to TIME that Nintendo have been experimenting with Star Fox since the days of the Wii, but couldn’t settle upon an idea for the game until the Wii U.

  • Daniel Jeanbaptiste

look fake though I see star fox 64 3d UI

    • Rhenan Dinardi
      • Daniel Jeanbaptiste

i know it was announced. my comment above was before the Digital Event

    • Are you implying that the Star Fox 64 3D UI isn’t superior?

    • Yeah, TIME just so happened to run into a Miyamoto doppelganger that offered to let them photograph him. :P

      • Well, Miyamoto is very photogenic, Ishaan!

    • Hector Velar

I hope it is fake too bro, can you imagine holding that controller up in that position for…lets say 2 or 3 hours moving it all over the place. I can see people are going to get tired of that crap really fast. I hope is fake too. This so far wins retarded award of the year.

      • Aemette

I hope you stop tossing the word “retarded” so freely. You can use other words to describe how you feel about this.

    Perfect. I love you, Shiggy.

This makes up for abandoning Metroid.

  • Somebody at TIME is in trouble. Is this safe to post? They took it down.

Nice to see Starfox returning to console. People been begging for this HARD. Being a year away is disappointing however.

    • Anime10121

Nobody can “get in trouble” for Time’s slip up.

      • GH56734

        TIME can.
If anything, Nintendo will be much less willing to give them such early interviews (this was meant to be online just after the E3 exposition)

        • Anime10121

Welp, unfortunately, thats no one’s fault but TIME’s. If they miss out on early interviews, they’ll just find someone else to publish the interviews. Things like this happen, and TIME will do better in the future about things like this because of it.

    • idrawrobots

It was a low-level employee from Cincinnati.

    • shadus

TIME slip up probably got 10,000 to 20,000 more viewers for Nintendo direct So I don’t think Nintendo is going to punish them for it. I always viewed winning E3 like winning the NFL draft in that it doesn’t mean anything till the games get played, However with this and the highly speculated Zelda U release its looks like Nintendo just picked up the number 1 QB off the board and a top 5 defensive player

  • Brian

My head exploded after reading this glorious news, seriously I don’t know how I’m typing this :/

  • So, anyways, Nintendo won E3 pre-game hype.

    • Masa

Nope, MGS and Witcher beat Nintendo with only the mention of they’re games.

    • Domii

Bloodbourne and Uncharted 4. Nuff said. lol

      • 666

Hey dude, you forgot to include comic, tv and youtube too.

    • rurifan

Do people actually think this looks cool?

      • phayroent

Nintendo “won” the pre-game hype. They “lost” E3 spectacularly.

        • rurifan

Oh, I see. :) I don’t like any of the nintendo franchises so I can’t tell what people are really excited for.

          • M’iau M’iaut

Then spend some time thinking and reading before you post. You have more than enough baiting posts where nothing is brought to the site but trolling and anger. Warned, move on.

          • rurifan

Please don’t remain upset because you were wrong yesterday.

      • 666

Yes it look cool, unless you’re a “modern gamer”. Well, if you’re a “modern gamer” then i guess you’ll never see the charm of nintendo game

        • rurifan

I though Space Quest was pretty awesome, if that gives me any old-skool cred. Some of you Nintendo fans seem kinda defensive.

      • Tiredman

Don’t really care about this, but the the majority of the other games makes this feel like it is ok to be here to make the niche group that loves these types of games happy.

      • I haven’t actually seen much but it sounds better than the gamecube starfox games where they tried to turn him into link or lara croft or whatever. The fact that it’s actually in a spaceship is a plus.

  • goa ahsd

but i liked the gamecube star fox where we could do minor free roam on foot and platforming… and i dont like the gamepad, so can i use normal controller

    • abysswalker

Yeah, when I saw the headline I was expecting something like that too…
Either way is not coming out soon and the one I’m eager for is a 3DS metroid.

  • James Enk

NICE!!! now i hope it turns out amazing

  • TheGioG

17/10 would use the brakes/boost to chase/barrel roll for all eternity. The rest of Nintendo’s E3 presentation gon b gud.

  • Somebody at TIME cant figure out time zones

  • jugss

But can you play the game without those motion controls? I hated that in Skyward Sword and Mario Kart.

    • idrawrobots

      Mario kart?

      • Anime10121

        Mario Kart Wii presumably…

        • Emsa

You can play Mario Kart 8 with the Wii remote and with motion control ;)

    • Misty Dawson

dont even need them in mario kart and the motions for SS were so minimal all you needed as a flick of the wrist. sheesh.

      • jugss

If you only knew how long it took me to make Link land on the circle after Zelda pushes him.

      • I seriously couldn’t kill those plants where you had to slash horizontally and vertically. Maybe I have a brain disease but I couldn’t get the sword to go in a straight line, even by the end of the game.

  • Onizuka Gio Hikari

    Nintendo already winning

    • I dunno. Nintendo’s delivery was a bit weak last year, despite having far longer stage time and prep work. This year, they are going further with that prep time, sure. But we can’t really say that they are winning with just this and the Invitational.

they should bring back Stiltzkin though. i miss him and his items.

    • Smooosh

      Agreed! STARFOX! <3

  • Casper Steuperaert

Take my money Nintendo, all of it, take my credit card, take my house, take my life. But give me Star Fox!

    • How are you going to play the game if you’re selling your morgage and your life? How are you gonna own anything, if you’re selling your rights to any ownership?

      • Anime10121

      • abysswalker

        Kamikaze style I suppose

      • Symbol de Au

He only said he wants the game he never said he wanted to play it.

        • There’s something about the concept of a Soul contract that not that many people seem to understand. If he were sell his soul, which is also the symbol of identity and individualism, he isn’t the one owning anything, but the one who bought it, is. Whatever was his, is now theirs to command. All his decisions are now theirs to make for him, and he can’t have a say to it, because it is in the binding contract that he signed up for.

          • Symbol de Au

            Uhhh…calm down?

          • What? Calm down? About what?

  • Fox

I hope it is more real than super.

  • anthony apduhan

What happened to the Digital Event? Star Fox already?! Oh yeah XD!

    • Smooosh

It’ll be live in an hour. :D

  • Symbol de Au

Oh wow Star Fox. Nintendo is finally listening to the fans…so now they can shut up…well almost…still need an F-Zero…*sigh*

    • anthony apduhan

      and Mother!

      • Juan Manuel M. Suárez

        And Metroid~.

  • Hector Velar

Ok I love Star Fox, most of the people coming here do too, and have been demanding a new game for the longest. But lets be realistic, sometimes Nintendo has tons of great ideas, sometime they have HUGE brain farts (virtual boy, dissing Sony’s CD system). This one I fear is one of those huge brain farts, using the controller screen to aim…really….REALLY?! Why will you need a big screen then if you are going to be forced to look at that crappy controller screen that limits only one player use? I mean look at Miyamoto, he is not even paying attention to the big TV screen on that picture…. how retarded is that? I know that they are proud of that brain fart that system is (for those who want to argue that just look at WiiU crappy sales, numbers agree to my statement) and their brain fart bulky, hard to handle, I don’t know wtf controller. They should not be forcing this great series to make people like their brain fart innovation. Instead make it playable with a better controller (game cube) and throw that screen brick like thing in the trash and we will remember it no more. So my hype died right away after looking at that picture, I laughed at first then It made me cry.

    • デ オオカミ

I was thinking the same thing, but they proved me completely wrong with Skyward Swords’s motion controls as well. I’m willing to give it a shot.

      • leingod

… and I couldn’t stand Skyward Sword because of that. So let’s hope motion controls are optional… giving people options ain’t that bad.

    • Stevie Doors

Jesus… this comment was more like a brain shart.

    • Agito

As far as we know this control scheme is optional. it isn’t like skyward sword where the motion control is a must have because of how the game is designed. Nintendo always had many controller options for their games. take mario kart for example, you can drive with the wii wheel, or just take a regular controller.

and that not paying attention to the big screen has actually happened to me and my brother before. when i play super mario 3d world, i usually check on the gamepad screen because it’s closer to me. my brother when playing mario kart 8 uses the gamepad because, again, the screen is closer to him.

      • Hector Velar

I hope it is, I can’t see myself playing it with that thing in front of my face, I love the original, there was nothing wrong with it. I just can’t picture myself.

  • Tarkovsky

I can see this game being extremely divisive amongst fans. Nintendo are likely to integrate the tablet into the gameplay to justify having it as part of the console. This will definitely piss off fans who want to play the game with normal controls but will appease fans who have been waiting for that one game that shows them why the pad is so integral to the system. I foresee Skyward Sword all over again.

    • 하세요

Seeing how it says “this mode,” I’m assuming that means there’s another mode of just standard controls. Because if not, that’s not a mode, it’s just the standard controls.

      • Tarkovsky

Yea we’ll just have to wait and see. If it’s not happening to Star Fox, then it’s likely to happen to another game. Either way, that one game that relies on the pad is gonna be extremely controversial imo.

    • I had trouble with the sword controls in SS but I think they were far from the game’s biggest problem. Repetition was. You’re going to fight this boss, but this time his footsteps will knock you down! You’re going back to this area, but this time you have to get back your items!

If motion control was a hindrance in any game, it was the mandatory mini games in Twilight Princess.

  • Kuromadou

expect something good follows up, i’m preparing my lube.

  • Roberto

    [hype intensifies]

  • This is why I hate leaks. I would’ve loved to see this and be surprised during Nintendo’s Direct or whatever they’re calling it.

  • Armane

New Starfox might be fun, wonder if Cuthbert is involved. That control scheme better be entirely optional though.

    Shame about the leak.

  • Cazar

Man, I didn’t really want to be spoiled this close before the actual conference.

  • Go2hell66

didn’t we just get a starfox game? if nintendo had to pick something to make a new console game for. starfox wouldn’t have been my choice

    • shymel

No, the last Star Fox game was a remake of SF64 on the 3DS in 2011.

      • Go2hell66

starfox still wouldn’t have been my first choice but i guess they can’t please everyone, really hope there’s a few more suprises in store.

    • Shane Guidaboni

There hasn’t been a new Starfox game in a long time.

  • Namuro

Project Giant Robot really piqued my interest! I hope it’s something similar to Gigantic Drive!

  • Oh Jesus, not again.

Can’t we have, y’know, a normal StarFox game in the vein of 1, 2, and 64? Must there always be some dumb gimmick to get in the way of non-linear story paths and shooting polygonal battleships in the weak point?

I liked Command (better than I liked Adventures or Assault, at least), but even I’ll admit the game would’ve been infinitely better if they’d just let you use the damn D-Pad instead of the asinine stylus controls.

    • Shane Guidaboni

Jeez, we barely know anything about the game yet. Calm down.

    • 3PointDecoupage

Chill out. Theyll probably include a non gamepad mode.

    • Thanatos2k

The controls in Command were wretched. The turn based battle system was bizarre.

Just make Star Fox 64 but better. No idiotic motion controls. No co-op. No forced ground missions where you are not in an Arwing or a tank. Just better graphics, better voice acting, and maybe some new weapons. Use the Pro controller, not the gamepad.

  • KoRLumen

  • Misty Dawson

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

Tails in Star fox…come on you know it works

  • Heisst

Well that’s underwhelming, the other 2 Miyamoto games are just shallow crap you’d find on mobile, I hope there’s a way to use normal controls on Starfox and not stupid forced gimmicks.

    • Hector Velar

they are forcing it so much that they are literally showing their gimmicks up your face! lol

  • I see like this 。゚+.ღ(ゝ◡ ⚈᷀᷁ღ)

    Ma jesus it’s happening :O Kreygasm b

  • Yan Zhao

Nintendo gona have the best show at E3 this year, kind of a surreal thing for me to say, but with Smash, Zelda U and Hyrule Warriors confirmed, what could go wrong?

  • ivanchu77

    Grim fandango, Star fox, Uncharted…..

So many franchise revivals this E3 xD , hopefully F-Zero and Metroid join them soon

  • Strain42

StarFox is good news and all, I have friends who are more excited for this than I am, but I have to admit right now all my hype is lying with “Project Giant Robot”

  • Thanatos2k

Wonderful. So they’re going to screw it up with forced motion controls and pointless co-op. Have they learned nothing? Why can’t you just make Star Fox 64 but better in every way instead of shoehorning in your motion control garbage?

  • That last part gives me hope for a new -Zero at some point.

But yay! I am so excited~! As long as it’s somewhat similar to Assault (has all the characters, fun multiplayer, fair story with good gameplay), I am completely onboard. My only complaint with Assault was that it was too short (and movement could have been a bit better on the characters’ feet).

I’m looking forward to every bit of news they’ll give us. ♥v♥

  • subsamuel01

I really hope that the motion controls are optional or I’m really going to cry.

  • John Diamond

Mario Party 10 was also confirmed

  • Sinful

    Nintendo won, no argument~

  • Freud_Hater

“So, we were considering what new and interesting games to make for our loyal fans and someone suggested doing the obvious and smart thing and making a new Star Fox game like the fans themselves have been asking for years!”

I’m as glad as the next guy, but did it really take Nintendo that long to figure it out? :/

  • Jack Frazee

I’m excited for new Star Fox, but gosh those controls seem like a pain in the butt. I just want to use a standard controller for Nintendo games again. :<

  • leingod

I just hope the motion controls are optional, and not mandatory. I freaking hate motion controls.
