Xenoblade Chronicles X Will Let You Be A Fully Customizable Guy Or Girl

By Ishaan . June 10, 2014 . 11:16am

Xenoblade Chronicles X will allow you to fully customize the appearance of the game’s main character, Nintendo say in a press release. This will include their gender, shapes, height, skin, colour, voice and tattoos.

Additionally, Nintendo also shared the following screenshots of the game:

  • Is it just me or their faces look a bit odd?

    • Astraye

      just you

    • Somebodyissilent

      I see it too.

    • lackofstyle

naw i was thinking that as well. i thought the same thing about xenoblades, but i blamed it on hardware limitations, but maybe its a artstyle thing

      • Aaron K Stone

Nope. This game has the same character designer as Xenosaga. If you look at them the similarities should be obvious.

    • Kumiko Akimoto

      Reminds me of pso2

      • ShawnOtakuSomething

        thank you

        • Kumiko Akimoto

Honestly when it came on I was like”Is nintendo doing another collaboration with sega for the new phantasy star game?”

    • Godmars

they seem to be going for an art style between the original series and Xenoblade.

    • Carlos Esparza

a bit?… look pretty creepy for me .-.

      • Eder García

welcome to PS2 JRPG graphics, 360/PS3 gamer enjoy your stay

    • HershelLousyton

Naw, they look odd to me. I hope they make them look a little less doll-like in the finished product.

    • Roger

It´s not on the same level as Star Ocean 4, but they do look strange. Kinda uncanny valley-ish.

The game overall seems godly, though.

    • XypherCode

That’s Kunihiko Tanaka’s character art style. Same as with Xenogears. Not a problem for me. I think it looks great.

  • Grape Monet

  • Helios373

YESSSSSS!!!!! just cant wait for this

  • Tatsuya1221

This worries me, npc interaction has never worked well in games with customizable avatars, especially rpg’s.

Don’t even get me started on the effect of online on jrpg’s, the only one that did this viably is the last story.

I Hope i’m proven wrong with this one, because i’m a big fan of the xeno games.

    • flameraver64

Really? Worked pretty well in Mass Effect

    • Ethan_Twain

I think maybe it’s most useful to look back at the previous game in the series here. Shulk was a pretty terrible protagonist! Very bland, straightforward JRPG hero who believes in his friends and ends up killing god. Would subbing him out for a (presumably) silent avatar really hurt the game? I’m leaning towards no.

      • Tatsuya1221

it’s not silent protagonist that’s bothering me, it will be difficult to make the game’s party members (if you have any) or npc’s to have any interaction on the level of xenoblade did, and that worries me, hopefully they give us the best of both worlds and take the mass effect route.

        • Ethan_Twain

Well maybe there’s another way to look at it. Xenoblade had a TON of systems and not all of them were terribly polished or great. Some of those I imagine will get cut (that dumb gem creation game should go away forever) but others will come back and be refined.

Xenoblade had characters level up affinity for one another through battle and those unlocked heart to heart conversations and there was also that whole totally unnecessary web of NPC connections that I never messed with at ALL even though I played for 80 hours. Maybe some of those systems will come back and be better in round 2 :)

          • Tatsuya1221

Maybe, hopefully they at least fix the subquest system, 100+ fetch quests aren’t fun guys, especially when they have a lockout and you can’t save them for the endgame.

          • David García Abril

The fetch quests weren’t that bad, since you didn’t have to backtrack for the vast majority of them.

What they need though, is to bring the more interesting sidequests earlier (you know, those which actually rised the affinity with the areas), since those took a while to appear.

          • Tiredman

The only thing I hated of it’s systems was the lack of a quest hub. Having to run around those giant cities 50 times or more to finish all the quests just struck me as such a huge waste of time. I don’t mind the time thing, but they really should have a central building or hub area where people who have quests that need done will show up at specific times to offer their quests.

      • goa ahsd

He was very monotone despite yelling ilke a crazy man once his friend “died”. that same passion of extreme vengeance didnt carry over from my point of view, so i do agree with u. hes bland like white rice, going along with the flow

      • David García Abril

Oh, come on, he wasn’t that bad!

Sure, he was the least memorable main character created by Tetsuya Takahashi (he was worried that people would hate him like some people hated Shion in “Xenosaga Ep III”, and he overcompensated a little), but he had some pretty badass moments.

        • Tatsuya1221

Shion deserved the hate she got though, considering the second half of the game and especially the incident before the final boss.

That’s probably why i consider chaos the main character of the xenosaga games, but that’s just me obviously.

The fact that shulk didn’t go a little on the lines of a blood knight is a little jarring though, since that’s more realistic.

        • Ethan_Twain

I hate them both! :) I hate Shion because she has a personality and it’s a personality of being UNBELIEVABLY passive and always getting in a fuss and never ever being able to be pragmatic and just identify the problem and solve it. I wouldn’t hang out with her in real life.

Shulk was just super bland. He was “the chosen one” so it’s not like he had a particular character arc, he was destined to be the hero and he leveled up a ton and was the hero. He had a magic sword.

Even when semi-interesting things happened to him he never had any interesting insights or reactions. Childhood friend girl/super obvious love interest dies and then comes back to life as a robo girl. Is he wielded out? Is he more into the new girl he met on his journey? Does he even ASK if she’s able to take off the robo clothes? Nah, he’s just supportive and doesn’t have any real personal reaction.

Same for pretty much everything in Xenoblade. He’s just kind of… there.

    • fairysun

They need to follow Mass Effect example.
First, NPC call your character with a nickname or last name. Two, your character need to have spoken dialogue or extreme choice in answering question and the NPC need to react accordingly to your answer.

      • Tatsuya1221

I hope they do, lord i hope they do.

The last thing i want is a character with little to no personality in this game.

      • keithmaxx

Part of the reason it worked for ME, I think, is because it’s not unusual to use last names amongst military comrades. Can you imagine that between BFFs? Lol.

    • Warboss Aohd

      Shepard and Hawke say hi.

Please tell me you didn’t have Hawke’s Mother’s cake.

      • Tatsuya1221

Yeah but that’s bioware, show me anyone else who pulled it off, if they pull it off like bioware did, then i will be very happy that i was proven wrong.

        • Stephen

Rudger from ToX2 is top baller. There’s lots of silent protagonists done well, and Monolith almost always has great writing, regardless of plot quality. Xenoblade’s plot isn’t the best but the writing and delivery are still both fantastic. Have more faith!

          • Tatsuya1221

It’s hard to have faith after being a sonic fan for so long XD.

My real worry is gender separation, some topics have different meanings to the two genders, as such it would require far less work to make a topic speaking of either a male or female protagonist, though it has been done before, i certainly hope it is done in this case as well.

        • David García Abril

Well, not in the same style as BioWare, but the Tactician from “Fire Emblem: Awakening” also salutes you.

          • Tatsuya1221

Never played it, so i cannot use it as a point of reference.

Nice to know though, if i ever get around to playing it.

    • goa ahsd

except interactions with npcs in Ms’s previous games were never expansive…they almost always said something along the lines of “hi sir, it the sun is shinning” or give u a fetch quest, so making cutzmation at least decreases these npcs and replaces them with more vendors though that worries me because part of open world games is to find items on the overworld and if the developers only put a tiny bit then it takes away motivation to explore

      • Tatsuya1221

i was mainly speaking of important characters, not just the faceless npc’s.

        • goa ahsd

          oh ok sorry

  • Nyandroid

Not race too? I was seeing different races in that trailer.

    • let’s hope its in there the more customization the more time you waste on the character creation screen fun

  • xe7en

    Good to see riki back!

  • Zizal

I really hate character creation. The characters feel soulless and look generic.

    • God

      My feelings exactly.

      • neocatzon

What character creation software do you usually use, god?

        • God

Omnipotence i guess, pretty standard stuff.

  • GH56734

I hope there won’t be any more manufactured controversies surrounding this… Well maybe NoA can shrug it off as an “alien race” to shut up SJW.

  • Go2hell66

just gonna pray they touch up the faces a bit before the game comes out

  • HK

Oh so the Elma character isn’t the main lead? That’s kind of the feeling I got from the trailer, but then again jrpgs tend to prefer male protagonists if it’s not a customizable lead. I suppose she’s the mentor kind of role.

Maybe it’s like the Chrom and Robin deal from Fire Emblem Awakening? Your personal character is largely important but the story focuses largely on Elma. That’s my hope at least.

  • Warboss Aohd

    can i make non humie?

  • Oh hooray! I’m looking forward to this game even more now!

That means I can be a girl!

  • Bayonetta 2, Xenoblade Chronicles X, and few others look amazing. Thank you Nintendo =^_^=

  • raeldor

This game is sure to shift some Wii-Us. Eventually. :P

  • J_Joestar

i just hope they are careful if they try to implement romantic relationships in this.

  • Izzeltrioum

    They want the…

On a more serious thought–Rest assured this will contain online coop mode, And oh gawd this is getting more westernized by the minute. But at least, as it will focus more on the open-world and “freedom” aspects rather than a deep battle system or memorable NPCs/Characters, this will sell like pancakes.

Still looking forward to it and will be a first-week-release purchase for me when I get to own a Wii U.

    • Nanashrew

Not surprising. There was a developer interview before where they did bring up Skyrim and they felt inspired by it.

  • jellyicexd

Gonna have to buy a Wii U now. Goodbye wallet.

  • jugss

I don’t see any telethia. Are they all dead? I remember the half-breed survived. Heropon<3

    • Tatsuya1221

In that trailer it said that the humans had lost earth, that may have something to do with it, heck the “growth” spoken of in the trailer may be the decendants of the tellethia.

  • Tanicia Marshall

Guess I have to buy a Wii U now.

  • Kotori Itsuka

    • exrazer

      Whose fault is that?

  • Malon

    Rikki is so swaggy

  • Takane Shijou

Really reminds me of PSO2 a bit with how the characters look.

  • goa ahsd

im still confused as to how this fits into XB…. is it a sequel prequel uh is MS gonna share plot details?….. what the heck is growth. i guess shulk made earth and all those other planets. what im confused. does it take place like 10000 years later cuz it looks like it

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

character creation…….?! oh snap! I hope they bring personality to the avaters, I just don’t want to stand there and hear all the other npc talk, give me mass effect type of character development

    • goa ahsd

real time interaction is the best but sadly few jrpgs use it. i believe ff15 embraces that concept

    • Godmars

When was there character development in Mass Effect?

      • Lan

Mass Effect 2 and all it’s perfection. The characters evolved as you did their loyalty missions. And I guess Shepard becomes more war weary.

        • Godmars

If you want to think that.

  • Hiro Oozora

……DAMMIT NINTENDO! * throws wallet at*

  • tubers

Is this game inspired by PSO?

  • Kornelious

Character Creation!? In a Xenoblade title!!!? Holy crap this game is gonna be the best thing ever!!!!!! =)

Hopefully this means we get romance options….I kinda didn’t like who you ended with in the first one……Though I sak for a lot….but if it does have that, then it really will be the best game EVER!!!! =D

  • CirnoTheStrongest

    Well geez, now I’m interested

  • Yasss. I need this game so bad. Also, maybe they are going for a strong PSO vibe on purpose. Makes me feel like some Sega folks are working on it.

  • > all these people complaining about the character designs/models

It’s like no one played Xenosaga Episode I… or Xenogears, for that matter.

  • MrJechgo

    My wallet’s gonna die so hard ;_;

  • exrazer

Can I have my avatar a nopon….. REYN TIMe IS OVER. IT”S HEROPON TIME

  • Tom_Phoenix

To be honest, I’m actually kind of impressed. Character customisation is quite uncommon in JRPGs. Even in games that have mute and/or nameless protagonists, the look of the character is usually already decided upon.

    Colour me interested.

  • Pix

  • leingod

Faces look pretty PS2-era-ish, but otherwise the game looks awesome. Hope there’s more nods to Xenogears in there.

  • XypherCode

As much as I like the game in general, I never really liked creating your own “protagonist” in the game. They should’ve just made it more like Xenoblade Chronicles on the Wii and stuck with a dedicated hero. I’m also the type to enjoy romantic interactions with the heroines and this shatters that particular expectation of mine in this game. That for me is what also makes a JRPG. Having said that I’m really excited for this. Not just for the whole personalized Avatar creation thing.

  • Kari

    I hate that nose…

  • Showmeyomoves
  • Linhua

… it can’t just be me or a coincidence… but that picture… second from the last… the demonic face on that ship is seriously scaring the shit out of me.

… it has all the features of a face… = =;; … eyes that never sleep… teeth that always eat… it even has eye brows and nose holes!

    … coincidence…?

    … I think not .-.
