Final Fantasy Explorers Announced For Nintendo 3DS

By Ishaan . June 11, 2014 . 6:25am

Final Fantasy Explorers is in development for the Nintendo 3DS, this week’s issue of Jump magazine reveals. The game is a multiplayer action RPG, where you search for crystals while battling the Summons in your way. (Thanks, Re:Zaregoto)

Final Fantasy Explorers will let you select from multiple Jobs, each with their own role. Jump’s reveal shows the Black Mage, White Mage, Knight and Monk.

The Black Mage attacks using magic and specializes in long-range attacks. The White Mage, as always, is focused on recovery spells.

The Monk’s description should come as no surprise to anyone that has played Final Fantasy before either—he’s the representative for physical attacks. Jump says he “overwhelms the enemy with his surging dash”. Finally, the Knight serves as the party’s shield, by attracting the enemy’s attacks.

Jump says that many Jobs from the Final Fantasy series will be present in Final Fantasy Explorers. Parties can consist of up to four players, and you’ll need to use each Job effectively to take on the enemy. The goal of the campaign is to defeat the different generations of Summons.

According to Jump, Final Fantasy Explorers will have a large variety of weapons to choose from. The magazine also shows Ifrit as one of the Summons in the game.

Final Fantasy Explorers doesn’t have a release date yet. Square Enix is listed as the game’s developer.

Hm… so Final Fantasy Monster Hunter?

    • Shin

Most probably. Now this leaves me thinking, what if they mix it into dynasty warrior style as well. Oh the awesomeness.

      • MagiusNecros

Been wanting a FF Musou for years. YEARS.

        • Shin

          Pray to god, please happen.

        • fyi1191

          Gilgamesh joins Lu Bu’s ranks.
          Don’t pursue Gilgamesh!

      • Should be named Crystal Warriors.

        • Crytal Musou?

          • Stephen Mc Devitt

A Final Fantasy Dynasty Warriors is certainly a great idea. Heck, most games could do with a little bit of Dynasty Warriors. Devil May Cry, SoulCalibur, Metal Gear, Skylanders, Guilty Gear, even tv shows like Game of Thrones, Avatar, Adventure Time and Friendship is Magic could be spiced up with fighting a 1000 enemies on the field.

          • Satori Satya

          • Stephen Mc Devitt

          • Draparde

I still hope one day for a Suikoden Warriors.

          • aizen310

            TV shows?
            Dirty Jobs Musou!
            Mythbusters Musou!

            Family Guy Musou!

            LOL :,D

          • Stephen Mc Devitt

With Peter farting fire and puking on everyone I assume?

          • aizen310

            I’ve seen worse :)

    • J_Joestar

i’d give it a try. Blue Mage would probably be lulzy.

      • neocatzon

        Aah, our favorite masochistic mage.

        • J_Joestar

can’t believe i’ve never realized that about them…

i wonder if monsters understand the concept of “Safe Word” though…

          • neocatzon

I don’t think the mages understand the concept either.

    • SlickRoach

Sounds like a dream come true. Especially since they’re using the FFIII-esque characters.

      • Thank goodness they are finally making a new game for 3ds. Everyone on my public bus ride will rejoice once hearing this news since everyone is still playing Bravely Default in Northern CA lol

        • Satori Satya

Well if they’re riding a public bus, then maybe that’s all they can afford?

          (I keed!I keed!) 。゜(゜^ェ^゜)゜。

I still see people playing Animal Crossing. That’s an old game.

          • LoL
Riding the Bus in San Francisco is almost expected on a day like today (Super hot).
I dont know if anyone else can vouch but the prices for public transportation are WAY TOO HIGH! they want to do $2.00 a ride for Adults! $2!? to ride alongside roaches and city squalor!?

And yes Animal crossing is everywhere! I notice the bravely default groups frequent Japan town on Sundays! Even the shop owner of Kinokuniya is still playing the JP version ^_^

          • If I had been just starting the game, I would have been clamoring to visit Japan town and get those street passes. x’D

          • AJ

My city is trying to make the transit system profitable. 3.20$ for a ride. Ridiculous.

          • Exkaiser

Here in Philly, they bumped the price up to $2.25 if you pay in cash in the last year. Tokens used to be a dollar fifty, but those are more expensive now, too..

Now if my partner and I go into town on the subway, it’s basically ten bucks for a round trip. Ugh.

    • chosen105

More like mini ff14 to me

      • hehe yeah

      • Morningstar

I’d say a mix of FF XIV and DQ IX

    • James Todd

      that sounds awesome

    • E.T.993

Everyone needs their Monster Hunter clone. :P

    • PreyMantis

      Final Fantasy: Crystal Hunter..?

  • Heropon

I am curious about director of this game

  • Exkaiser

This looks super cute. I hope it turns out well, I would really like to run around as a monk or… dare I hope, a Blue Mage!

Hah, of course that would never happen. C’est la vie.

  • revenent hell

Hmmmm. I tend to buy most things “Final Fantasy” barring the rhythm games since I don’t enjoy them but I am not to sure if I like how I feel about were this game could be headed.
I think I will just wait and see of what more they have to say about it in future.

  • Onizuka Gio Hikari

I love the sound of this concept ^-^

  • Kuromadou

pls i hope this is some kind of MH-ish game

  • BillyMK

It’s probably in the same line of the DS’s Crystal Chronicle games.

    • Crystal Chronicles had a very heavy focus on cooperative puzzle-solving. That doesn’t seem to be the case here. This seems much more inspired by Monster Hunter.

      • Fastchrone

i wonder why they not make crystal chronicle again? :(

        • As much as I love Crystal Chronicles and would like to see more of it, this will make infinitely more money than CC ever did. The CC games weren’t unpopular, but every publisher has its eye on the Monster Hunter audience right now.

Plus, I don’t know what Kawazu, the person in charge of Crystal Chronicles, is up to. He’s been talking about doing a new SaGa game for a while now. For all we know, he could be in charge of this game, too.

          • Yes he is busy with SaGa i have heard. A little annoyed that the new Saga announcement is coming later than expected was posted on his blog I heard

        • Kaihaku

I’ve been wondering that since the Wii U came out.

      • GH56734

So, Cross Treasure DS branded as a Final Fantasy 3DS game?

  • A nice surprise there.

  • 하세요

    I’m okay with this.

  • eilegz

hopefully more like phantasy star and less like monster hunter…

  • CozyAndWarm

Huh. Looks pretty fun, hope it gets localized. Kinda gives me Crystal Chronicles vibes.

I’m not saying I’m not excited for this game, but what’s with Square’s aversion to putting a mainline FF game/port on 3DS/Wii U, though?

    • Every mainline FF is well know for a leap in graphic quality and that’s not the case with the 3DS. WiiU has a little installed base, that’s why.

      • kylehyde

Still FF7, FF8 and FF9 could be ported/remaked very well on the 3DS.

        • Nesther

They’re saving up FFVII and co for full console remakes in the future.
I doubt they’d waste the potential of a FFVII remake on 3DS, seeing as people still remember the PS3 tech demo from a few years ago.

    • kylehyde

I still want to know what happened to the projects for porting FFV and FFVI. I remember that they mentioned that those were being worked on the DS, but for storage constraints they have to halt the projects and I ask why not resurrect them on the 3DS? Also I think that 3DS is very capable of having and enhanced remake/port of FF7, FF8 and FF9

    • I want to know what’s up with them and their aversion to Nintendo, period. It has pretty much only been BD right now, right? And that was because Asano and team chose that I’m sure.

Well, there’s also Theatrhythm, but still.
(Ah, wait, there was a KH game too. . .)

      • Roger

Yeah,Theatrhythm looks like a strange example, since it´s a spin-off and a total different genre.

3DS could probably handle big, stand-alone, pretty and high budget FFs, like FF Type-0 easily, though. Even Dissidia and Duodecim-esque. (although it´s a different genre again)

        I wonder why now.
(coming from someone loved BDFF, btw)

        • Yeah. It looks fun, but it’s kind of a “cop-out” in a way.

I agree and imagine it could~. Whether they want to take the chance is the question though.

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

remind me of..Crystal Chronicles I miss Crystal Chronicles…..

oh this looks fun too Monster Final Hunter Chronicles

  • Roger

Nice to see FF RPGs for 3DS, and not mobile ones.
Actually surprised that we are getting RPGs too for it. (not counting BDFF here, since it´s another series, despite Nes/Snes roots)

    • 3PointDecoupage

Dont worry. Itll get an Ios port within six months of release.

      • Roger

  • I be stoked if they had the ninja class.

    • 3PointDecoupage

Of course Ninja will be in it.

      • Well just saying considering it only introduces 4 classes.

  • ネオフォトン ~ Neo

I’d give this game a shot, the concept sounds neat.

  • DanijoEX ♬ the Cosmic Owl

I think I might want to look out for this one. I’m hoping it will have a Western release in the future.

  • Stephen Mc Devitt

This game is doomed if micro-transactions are the core of the experience.

  • 永次

I will wait for the PS6 version.

  • Is this one of the new IPs?

  • 3PointDecoupage

I hope they learned their lesson with Crystal Chronicles and let you have AI party members.

  • Doesn’t look bad at all. Might have to add it to my library of games since my 3DS XL has sat vacant for a good while.

    • Satori Satya

That happened to my gas guzzling truck. It’s been sitting idly for a while.

Yeah, there are fun places to go out there with it, indeed. But I can’t afford it. So I either convince myself that those places are not fun at all or I use my regular car that gives me better mileage.

I guess the analogy fits the 3DS. There are fun games out there, but not everyone can afford them at full price.

So the cheaper option is playing cheap mobile games. And since this is Square-Enix, this game might end up on mobiles.

So give your 3DS XL a long rest and wait for that cheap version. 6 months from now, like that other user predicted here.

BTW, I’m selling my truck. Its going to waste. Maybe you should do the same with your XL.

      • Nice analogy! True, but price doesn’t play too much of a part in my decision for buying 3DS games. Its mostly been the lack of RPGs that has caused my 3DS to sit idly by. I own SMT IV, and Pokemon Y (Probably will purchase Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire) FF Theatrythm (Butchered that) doesn’t look bad as well, and I will probably pick it up too. There’s also Bravely Default, but that’s only a handful of RPGs. Luckily there are a few coming in the near future that I may or may not pick up. Once school starts back up I’ll be too busy and worried to play many games though.

        • Satori Satya

Well I dunno how you play your RPG’s but I personally like to savor them. Getting down to the bone of ’em. I never, EVER rush through them. Especially because I already know that they’re not being released every hour. At least not the good ones.

All those titles you mentioned plus the ones you didn’t, like the Etrian Odyssey series, Fire Emblem, Crimson Shroud, The Denpa Men 1, Denpa Men 2, Conception II: Children of the Seven Stars, Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner – Soul Hackers & Devil Survivor Overlocked (and all the DS RPG’s that I’ve missed so far), are going to keep me busy until you graduate from school.

But again, it depends how you play a game.

Here’s another analogy: It’s like people that like to speed through a book. Just to say “I read it!”. But whenever you ask those same people about specifics in the book, they don’t know what to say. They can tell you just the basics & nothing more. Basics as in either “I didn’t or did like the book”.

I don’t treat my games/books as fast food, that’s what I’m saying here. More or less.

          Good luck with school!

          • Yeah, now that you said something I do tend to get so into my games that I end up gobbling them down too quickly if you want to stick to the analogy of food. I usually get so into that I rush through them in a short span of time :) Also I’ve never played an Etrian Odyssey game, I own most of the Fire Emblem games. I’ve never heard of: Crimson Shroud, The Denpa Men 1 or 2, and I have heard of but never played Conception 2. I’ve played and thoroughly enjoyed both Devil Summoner DS games although as I aforementioned I usually get so enthralled that I play them through very quickly.

Thank you :) Also, if you savor your games then you may be able to have something to play until I graduate, but I’m a senior, so it may be cutting it close :) Unless you count College as well :D

  • Chersea

I’m kind of wondering whether this is a developed prototype of Bravely Default (since that was originally an action RPG), except it has different settings, story and so on. It would be interesting, at least.

    • That’s a possibility; I wonder what team is working on this.

  • Ace Esper

Well, time to convince my friend to get a 3DS so we can relive those Crystal Chronicles days.

  • natchu96

You know something is starting to feel pathetic when I am surprised that they put out something other than a smartphone game for once.

  • Very excited for this. If it has online, I’m 90% sold.

  • Ric Vazquez

    I hope this is good

  • greavah

    Looks good. have my money

  • Invisbin

Online coop and I’m super sold

  • Kornelious

So…it’s a Final Fantasy 5 themed game (Job classes and such) with online elements…..That doesn’t sound to bad :)

Though if it’s gonna be online then I assume it’s not gonna be your average Turn-based battles, knowing square it will probally be like FFXIV’s combat……..

So then I dub this game, “Chibi FFXIV”….or maybe “Final Hunter V”….or what about “Monster Fantasy Explores”………Though that last one sounds kind of ecchi. XD

    • Chip

I suspect it’ll be more of a button-masher like KH, though magic users may focus more on menus than repeatedly attacking.

      • Kornelious

        Button-Mashing style…EVEN BETTER! :D

  • Ritsuioko23

Seems more like a crystal chronicles game. I wish square would support that series again. I miss it.

  • wahyudil

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicle in non-crystal world???

  • Draparde

This is an awesome concept. i would hope that rather than just being a regular hunting game, that they take a more RPG approach (so more like PSO i suppose) Though i hope it has you making gear from materials and stuff.

Leveling up and learning new skills is what makes the job system so fun to me. i hope it doesn’t just start you off with 4 abilities and calls it a day for the whole game.

  • Not what I was looking forward to, but it still sounds fun and cute!
I’m still hoping that we get a Chocobo game for 3DS, and eventually, FFV remake.

    • Roger

I wonder how are the odds to get turn-based FF games for 3DS, since Asano produced FFIII/IV DS, 4HoL and is producing Bravely games with Silicon Studios now. :x

      • I’m hoping relatively high! But I feel like it wouldn’t happen unless Asano is working on it. TTuTT

    • Fastchrone
this game too good to be cancelled :(

      • I remember that one was cancelled, which is why I hope we still may get one in the future. ;u;

  • MarcSK

    Crystal Chronicles is back!

  • Kaetsu

This kind of reminds me of Crystal Chronicles on the Gamecube.

  • Chip

No thieves. I’m annoyed. I hate not having access to Steal.

    • Those aren’t all the classes. Wait for TGS. That’s where SE feels like shining in.

      • Chip

I hope so. But if it has to be unlocked, I’ll still be annoyed.

        • Nanaki

When you think of jobs in the Final Fantasy series, are the Thief classes ever left out? Not from what I recall. Since this games seems to focus on those jobs, I definitely wouldn’t be concerned. Give things more time before pushing forth judgment.

  • BeatTheGG

Oh hey this seems pretty nice :D Something along the lines of Monster Hunter and FFIII no doubt?

  • Izzeltrioum

SE’s leaning more and more towards the ARPG genre.

Not that I’m complaining; It’s the other way around actually.

  • Wow, definitely interested!

  • Vash bane

sounds like crystal chronicles minus making your own character.

  • Ixbran

EEE, an action adventure RPG, that sounds fantastic!

    cant wait <3

  • TerrenceEncore Jones

    Please and thank you

  • RedFayt

Okay first of all, thank you for not making them FF3 style stubby. These characters have a nice balance between full-size and chibi. The costume design is killer! Please let the gameplay be solid, because I’m quite sold on the concept. m/ IFRIT! Woooh.

  • Gosh… I guess the Crystal Chronicles series really is dead.

  • gallogallo88

how is this different with the bravely default game?

    • Cause it’s an action game, and it’s multiplayer. :(
