Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem Is On Schedule

By Ishaan . June 11, 2014 . 7:18pm

Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem for the Wii U is not cancelled.

The game is still in development, according to Nintendo producer Hitoshi Yamagami, and is on schedule.

Yamagami, who answered a question about the game from a reporter at the Q&A for S.T.E.A.M., said he could not provide further details at the moment.

  • Major props to the person who asked the question. I’m sad that we didn’t get any info for it at E3.

    • Warboss Aohd

Same, but at least it’s still going on, and on schedule at that.

now if only we had some info on Kaio: King of Pirates.

      • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

        Where is my Rodea.T_T

      • J_Joestar

yeah, i wonder if anyone can find any news on the anime that is supposed to come out for it since Inafune mentioned that MAQL was waiting for a cross-media release for the game.

    • SetzerGabbiani

I know both series are just finding their footing in the west, but this is a question I thought would have been asked pre-E3. I figured it wouldn’t be featured at E3 because it had not been mentioned in Japanese gaming press beforehand, but I did expect the question to be asked much earlier.

  • Abel_Nightroad

So do we know who is developing it ? Atlus must be very busy with Persona 5. Intelligent Systems is that big that they can handle multiple projects ?

    • Atlus is developing the game. This was announced back when the title was first revealed.

      • Ecchitori-san

I’m assuming Maniax is behind this, yes?

        • Unknown. They haven’t said who exactly within Atlus is working on it.

    • Ethan_Twain

You know, Atlus is a multi-studio publishing house too :P I can’t think of a time when they didn’t have two or three games going.

Persona Q just wrapped up so that team always does it’s own thing and they’ll probably move into Etrian Odyssey V from here.

The Persona team will keep plugging away on Persona 5 and overseeing the projects from other teams (the fighting game and the dancing game and whatever I’m forgetting).

Then there’s whatever team is working on Devil Survivor 2: Break Record.

And also there’s a team doing SMT X Fire Emblem.

And honestly I suspect there’s at least one game in development that we don’t know about. I keep expecting SMT IV: Maniacs Edition but it could also turn out to be something more unusual. Maybe some sort of Trauma Center, maybe some one-off RPG like Radiant Historia.

  • Nice! Glad to know it’s still coming.

  • LordHyper

It’ll probably never come to Europe, though.

    • HershelLousyton

SMTIV got a release date and will come to Europe…Eventually.

    • Ecchitori-san

Nintendo is backing this up (considering the name FE is intact) Most likely a EU release is a given.

    • It’s being published by Nintendo. It is 100% coming to Europe.

  • HershelLousyton

All I need to know is that it’s still in development. It was pretty clear by the trailer consisting of nothing except pre-made artwork that the title was announced a wee bit early, so I won’t be surprised if it takes a while for more news to show up. That said, HOLY FUCK! I can’t believe this game is going to exist, but I’m so happy it will!

  • TheGioG

I swear folks, I never would’ve thought this crossover would be possible some ages past. May Support Convos and/or Persona’s Social Links make a return in this game.
“A redhead shop-keep trying to scam me AND an adorable snowman trying to kill me? This shop seems legit. 17/10 Would become frequent customer.”

    • ShawnOtakuSomething

      this pic wins :D

    • Tarkovsky

It’s 100% guaranteed that there won’t be any Persona characters or gameplay elements in this game. Persona is not part of the SMT series in Japan so I would advise you to not get your hopes up to high.

      • Kumiko Akimoto

Persona is apart of the SMT series, It’s a spin off of the main series.

        • Tarkovsky

Nope. Yes it spun off from SMT initially but since then, Persona has been called Persona in Japan and SMT, SMT. They have been separate for quite awhile now. Having lived there a few years back and reading their gaming magazines. They never ever refer to Persona as part of the SMT series.

          • doubleO7

That doesn’t make it not a spinoff, just a very far removed one.

          • Tarkovsky

Whatever you want to call it. It has been it’s own series since Persona 2.

          • Nanaki

Sure they may call it PERSONA (ペルソナ) in Japan, but I don’t see how it being a spin-off series (which it is) negates the possibility of using elements from those games. All that we have to fall back on at this point was a still of Fire Emblem characters as well as characters from Megami Tensei titles.
            You never know. :)

          • Tarkovsky

Sure whatever people choose to believe. I just hope people don’t bitch and whine when things they expect(Persona characters and anything Persona related) don’t appear in the game.

One thing that will very likely be in the game though is FE:Awakening’s character interactions and partner system.

          • Federico

Dude i couldn’t agree more with you.

          • Jedahaw

Persona is under Megami Ibunroku in Japan.

          • They still don´t call it SMT: Persona in Japan? Then why the namechange outside of Japan? Since now all the remakes and such have had the prefix of SMT and then it´s title.

          • Tarkovsky

Because Atlus USA. Trust me. Even the teaser trailer only shows characters from all the SMT games. Persona is more popular than SMT in Japan. You’d think that they would show some or at least 1 character from Persona if they were going to be in the game.

          • Good enough. I´m just surprised at the name change since they did not start off with it being as such.

          • Jedahaw

Actually, ever since P4Golden, the SMT name isn’t there anymore

          • All the name changes!!!

Making it harder to give out the correct information to people. But yeah I should have noticed the name change since I do own P4G.

          • DragKudo

It was for marketing purposes Persona wasn’t a big name back in the day so every game that was apart of MegaTen had SMT added to their name. Persona and the other spin offs have grown their own fanbases they don’t need the title SMT title anymore.

Persona is a spin-off what if sequel to The SMT series
SMT is a spin off of Megami Tensei.

          • Kumiko Akimoto

Uhh it being a spin off game means it’s apart of the series dude. Do you even know what a spin off game is?
They don’t have to use the name of the main series in a spin of game.

          • EverEndingStory

So then the Mana series, Kingdom Hearts, and Bravely Default are all a part of the Final Fantasy series?

          • Mr_SP

Sort of. It’s a matter of degrees. Kingdom Hearts isn’t a Final Fantasy, per se, but you’d have to be daft to ignore the fact that a good quarter of the game is dependent on knowing a little bit of recent Final Fantasy lore, as it uses a bunch of characters in major roles, just as it does for Disney.

On the other hand, SMT, Persona, Devil Summoner, etc, seem to share a universe. In the background, it gives hints of a connected timeline where Raidou games happen in an alternate SMT 1 universe, Demi-Fiend appears in DDS, and the female protagonist from If appears in the first three Persona games.

Unlike Final Fantasy, where games are barely even connected to games with the same title, you can make legitimate cases for SMT and it’s spinoffs being the same timeline… except that it’s all too confusing to make sense of.

But, you know, if they haven’t announced Persona or Devil Summoner characters by now, don’t expect them to be more than optional boss fights.

          • Kumiko Akimoto

So you’ve never heard of the fate series or the atelier series then? I’m guessing

          • Tarkovsky

Like I’ve said in my comment below. Feel free to believe whatever you want. I’m just stating facts. Just make sure you don’t moan and whine when the final game releases with no Persona characters if that’s what you’re hoping for.

          • Kumiko Akimoto

Uhh you’re not staying a fact of any kind, and quite frankly you putting importance on “Hey don’t complain when no persona in the game guys” pretty much tells me your only saying this because you don’t like how people complain about persona and smt.
I’m sorry but the single fact is that persona is apart of the smt series just like the other smt spin offs.

          • Tarkovsky

Whatever you choose to believe lol. Just know that your “fact” isn’t one.

          • Kumiko Akimoto

            Too bad it is.

          • Tarkovsky

            Be my guest. :)

          • Adrian Duran

Can we see Fawful in the next Mario Party game then?

          • Kumiko Akimoto

I have no idea what that is

          • Tom_Phoenix

I’ve always found that to be a pointless argument, though. Even if they’re considered separate by name, they are still canonically linked, they both feature mythology as a prominent theme and Persona uses a lot of similar gameplay mechanics. So even if they are technically separate, they are still connected in many ways and it thus isn’t incorrect to call Persona a spin-off of the SMT series.

However, this isn’t to say that we will see Persona characters in SMTxFE. If that had been the plan, we would have seen Persona characters in the teaser as well. Heck, the teaser is still missing some of the characters, like the Strange Journey protagonist.

      • Tiredman

Persona isn’t what I really care about, demons and demon fusion are what make a SMT game for me. Oh, and a really dark story.

  • PRAISE THE SUN, CHUCK NORRIS, AND KOJIMA! Ah gosh i needed that. That is all i needed to hear despite no trailer whats so ever!

  • Xmas Lopez

Thank goodness it’s not cancelled. I can breathe easier now.

  • That’s one of my concerns cleared. Now on to the wait for more Bravely Second news.

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

    2015 most likely

    • Please don’t.

      • ShawnOtakuSomething

you want it to be good, give it time ^_^

        • Jason Ryer

More like 2015 japan 16 everywhere else.

          • *vomits* Then again, the earliest they could’ve started work was sometime before the initial 2013 reveal, and completion depends solely on the scale of the project.

But come now, we already have so many 2015 titles and even now that’s shaping up to be a pretty awkward year for me (the second occurrence in my life where lucky number 9 is stapled to my age).

    • subsamuel01

If they show the game at TGS maybe 2015, if not early 2016.

      • Daniel Jeanbaptiste

        Nintendo doesn’t go to TGS

        • subsamuel01

This is a collaboration title with Atlus so don’t count it out.

          • Daniel Jeanbaptiste

It is but Atlus isn’t in charge of the marketing and publishing. Unlike Hyrule Warriors for Tecmo KOEI.

          • subsamuel01

I guess we’ill find out in September.

  • Go2hell66

Ugh this game is so far away its frustrating

  • NeptuniasBeard

    IGN can rest easy…

  • SteveThompson1

Im wondering why they didn’t show anything.

    • Enzo

Because this was revealed during a Q&A about Nintendo’s new IP for the 3DS when someone asked about SMT x FE.

  • Nanaki

YES! Great news. Thank you for reporting on this.

  • Buitronthecrazy .

  • Kumiko Akimoto

  • revenent hell

I don’t really care for cross games BUT I adore both of these brands so….
I look forward to more information on it.

  • idrawrobots

Sad to not see this or Fatal Frame at E3.

  • sharpshot909

It would be great to see some gameplay.

I want to know if it will play like Fire Emblem, or if it will play like SMT (or possibly both)

  • Alberto Maytorena

I was starting to lose faith in this.

    • I guess a lesson can be learned that if the devs don’t directly say it’s cancelled, it’s best not to assume the worst

  • MentalAlliance

Nintendo just destroyed E3 for me this year! Incredible!!!!!

    • There was not much they could do this year. And to be honest, they tried to make up for it at least by giving us the same amount of content just without the stage.

  • SetzerGabbiani

Famous last words….I kid, I kid. It’s my most anticipated title outside of MH4U. Glad to know it’s still “on track”. I was starting to lose faith.

  • Fox

On schedule? Wasn’t it originally supposed to release October 2014 in North America?

  • Ying

I was wondering about this game. I’m so happy that this is still being developed, but I wish we could have gotten a screenshot or two

  • Vash bane

when ever I see SMT in any title I always think of a certain series. and keep forgetting that there are other titles in the series (seeing as I don’t know any of the characters in that screen shot)

    • revenent hell

:D most of the characters in the shot are from the older Shin Megami Tensei games. The white out characters in the far back are from IV, I believe that’s the only “recent” game characters in the shot but if you want to know about the rest of them the wiki is pretty damn good and informative.

The dude with the green pants and lady with red is from the first Shin Megami Tensei game.

The dude in yellow and blonde haired lady is from SMT II

The two in the blue uniforms are from SMT IF

And last but not least my favorite game is represented by the girl in the faded blue ~Nocturne~

  • sakusakusakura_nyo

I’m glad this game isn’t getting cancelled! It sounds like it’s going to be awesome!

  • F****** **** YEAH!

  • Zefiro Torna

“Yamagami… said he could not provide further details at the moment.”

Based on the exact quote he said, sounds like he already said way too much too early and is being as cautious as possible (of course). When he last spoke about this crossover, he had let it slip that the game would take place in a modern setting.

Can’t blame any of the staff, who wouldn’t have a tough time balancing enthusiasm and a required silence on a project such as this?

  • Rob

more info probably coming at tokyo game show. if not cancelled.

  • Maurice

I’m really glad this game isn’t cancelled, it would be a huge let down. Both Shin Megami Tensei and Fire Emblem have a big fan base. Hopefully we will hear more soon or at E3 next year. Looking forward to this one!

  • James Enk

i was hoping we could see more at this years E3, they wait continues

  • aizen310

    I’m curious.
Is this going to be an SMT game with occasional FE cameos or an FE game with occasional SMT cameos?

Just like in Kingdom Hearts, which -in theory- an FFxDisney, but still… it’s Disney with occasional FF cameos.

    • thnkgod4mentlillness

It’s a cross-over, so I’d guess it’ll be more like Super Robot Taisen. I have the feeling it’ll be a TRPG like most cross-over games.

      • aizen310

Kingdom Hearts is a cross-over too. Cross-over doesn’t means TRPG like gameplay.
Marvel vs Capcom is a cross-over game and is a fighting game.

        • thnkgod4mentlillness

Many, many cross-overs are TRPGs. Very few are otherwise.

          • aizen310

Maybe. But the term: “crossover” does not equals to TRPG. That’s why this game could be just as much of a legit JRPG, like anything SMT related.

          • thnkgod4mentlillness

Yea I wasn’t saying it does mean that. It’s just a likely factor, since majority of crossovers are TRPG, and not to mention Fire Emblem is a TRPG, and SMT has had TRPGs before.

    • The Undead

Fire emblem has a bigger player base, so is pretty much going to be Fire Emblem Vs Demons, unless they trow Persona into the mix

  • RagingTiger44

    It lives!!

  • wahyudil

so shin megami tensei series is for nintendo and persona series is for sony

    • thnkgod4mentlillness

Devil Summoner games have been on PSOne, PSP, PS2 (not to mention… even on Sega Saturn); Digital Devil Saga 1 and 2 were on PS2; SMTIII was PS2; ports of SMT were on PSOne; etc

MegaTen isn’t Nintendo exclusive, nor is Persona Sony exclusive (PQ being 3DS exclusive even).

  • Kornelious

Well…..At least it’s still in production, I wish we could at least figure out what the game excatly IS :(

  • Vitor Duarte

I think I know this smell. It smells like The Last Guardian.

    • Which is also coming out while being marginally delayed.

      • thnkgod4mentlillness

I think that was the joke…

        • yep my point is that. I know that and people make up there own release date fate for a game regardless of what the devs tell us. FF 15 as been cancelled 2 times. Last Guardian is being made by gamestop employees. you know, tat kinda whimsical BS.

    • The Undead

We are talking about Nintendo here, they do not lie and always release

  • Shane Guidaboni

    Then show it to us!!

  • Göran Isacson

Looks like we’ll be waiting for this one for quite some time. But eh- I’m a Kingdom Hearts fan. If I can wait for KH3, I can wait for this one.

  • Michael Cortorreal

    • thnkgod4mentlillness

I would argue it’s because of the fact the majority of Nintendo MegaTen games never made it to the west (Megami Tensei, SMT 1 -not counting the iOS port since you know… iOS-, 2, if…, etc etc). However, they included Lucas in the last one, despite MOTHER 3 being relatively (rather, pretty much) unknown to many westerners. Basically every Smash character is popular in both Japan and the west, while we don’t have any Nintendo-based SMT games, apart from IV, and the Devil Survivor MegaTen spin-off games.

It would be awesome having a character that used guns, swords and could summon demons, but not sure how well that would go over in the Smash community.

      • Michael Cortorreal

Me neither, but that franchiase is a good pick for Smash, but o well xD lets be happy with what we got.

  • Guest

My 3DS is going to be so full of video games .

Pre-ordered P4Q, Theatrhym on the way, Smashbros, STEAM

  • The Undead

Is Persona included there or just SMT, because if no then, is just going to be Fire Emblem vs Demons (Not that SMT is bad, but is extremely niche)
